Ranking The Roller Coasters At Busch Gardens Williamsburg

  • With 8 roller coasters in operation and 1 on the way, Busch Gardens Williamsburg doesn’t have the biggest coaster collection, but I would argue, just like the Tampa location, both parks focus on quality over quantity. Also, just like Busch Gardens Tampa, their top 3 even their top 5 is very tough to rank because they’re all so great!

Pantheon is without question the best ride at BGW, I’ve been on Pantheon four times now and it never fails to impress, it’s simply breathtaking. It doesn’t tolerate windy weather well tho, it’s gonna be closed if winds gust up even a little.

I was at Busch Gardens 2 days ago for a weekend and wow. Verboten is amazing. My favorite as well. The theming is absolutely amazing. The play on words for Verbolten being “ Forbidden “, as you’re riding through the Forbidden Black Forest was really clever and the theming is so good I can’t say it enough. The ride is extremely fun and surprisingly thrilling. The back is insane and I rode it 8 times the entire last day.

You did a great job! We went to BG for the first time in 15 years, and loved those rides! Verbolten is a worthy successor of Big Bad Wolf which was my first big coaster in 1991.

    My ranking:
-8. Grover’s Alpine Express: The kiddie coaster. Enough said.
-7. Loch Ness Monster: As far as Arrow loopers from the 1970s go, this ones not bad. Loops are great and the helix in the tunnel is a fun touch, but it’s still janky in spots.
-6. InvadR: An underrated GCI for sure. Lots of airtime and laterals, plus great theming in the plaza and station. Also running pretty smooth for the most part.
-5. Tempesto: A Sky Rocket II, but as far as cloned coasters go, it’s one of the best. Butter smooth, intense, with stellar hangtime in that roll. Only knock on it are the comfort collars, but they’re not bad by any means.
-4. Verbolten: Some of the best theming outside of the Disney and Universal parks, rerideability with the multiple storylines, great forces. Running a little rough in parts, but it’s still a ton of fun.
-3. Griffon: Only thing preventing it from being higher is its length. The two big drops are amazing, the inversions are fun, there’s one solid airtime hill before the splashdown, and the 10-across seating still makes for totally different experiences depending on where you ride. Still running butter smooth too.
-2. Apollo’s Chariot: It’s a B&M hyper, need I say more? Still delivering fantastic air in the back row, with the first drop, MCBR drop and final drop before the brakes. It has a slight rattle towards the back, but it’s not enough to damage the ride experience in any way. And those restraints...amazing!
-1. Alpengeist: What puts this at #1 is the intensity. Strong positives throughout, whip (gotta go with that cobra roll), great theming for an American invert, and one of the best setting of an invert. Like Apollo’s, it runs a tad rough in the back, but it’s never been a dealbreaker for me.
TBD: Pantheon: I’m expecting this to dethrone Alpie as the best ride in the park. Looks to provide a crazy ride with its launches, balance of positives, negatives, and laterals, and of course those restraints, which look as good as Apollo’s. Can’t wait to ride it

Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to ride the Griffon this time around since it broke down three times while I was there, the first time when I was, and Verboltim was closed initially when I was there but when it reopened, the line was too long so I just re-rode Alpengeist.

I disagree I love verbolten it's very well themed and the tunnel is just really fun so I would put it on number 5 I didn't ride tempesto because I just didn't really want to and you can look at my comment for the reasoning why I like alpiengiest better than griffon it's very long but to sum it up I sat in the front it was very intense I wouldn't consider any of the elements rough and I think a whip doesn't make the ride worse or more rough. Also I had a pretty bad experience on InvadR basically sat in the back stapled myself and only got 1 airtime moment.

Also I prefer alpiengiest over griffon because I sat in the front and it was very forceful and intense I didn't find any part of the ride rough and the start of the cobra roll was just a little whip I didn't slam my head against the restraint I just see it as another intense element of the ride and griffon is fun but very short only had 2 airtime moments and the inversions weren't very forcefull. I also agree that pantheon will be the best ride at the park I went there today and saw it testing I only got a small glimpse at it but it was flying over that top hat I can't wait to ride it!

My ranking differs from a lot (didn't ride Grover's)
    7. Loch Ness Monster (extremely rattly, to the point where it was unpleasant. No airtime, though the loops were pretty intense)
    6. InvadR (not exceedingly rough but certainly not smooth, has a good first drop but after that is pretty boring)
    5. Alpengeist (Pretty rough, and besides the first drop nothing I really enjoyed. I'm not a huge fan of some inversions, including the cobra roll, so that might be why. Also slams you into that mid course super hard)
    4. Apollo's Chariot (I rode this one twice and it was pretty rough both times. I got good airtime on the first drop but after that very little, and nothing by the bunny hills at the end).
    3. Verbolten (Also pretty good launches, I love good indoor sections, and the drop track always gets me.)
    2. Tempesto (I know I'm gonna get hate for putting this so high but I really enjoyed it. The launches were intense, there were a few pops of airtime, and that slow roll at the top was amazing. Restraints didn't bother me, only issue was low capacity and therefore long wait).
    1. Griffon (I absolutely LOVED this coaster and rode it 10 times in a row. It's my first ever dive and the airtime I experienced on the first drop was literally insane, especially cause I managed to get my restraint very loose for several of the rides. I'm not usually a fan of non-zero g roll inversions as I said above but I also really enjoyed the Immelmanns. The coaster never loses its speed, has great airtime and inversions, and is butter smooth. Having been to Hersheypark, Kings Dominion, and BGW, this is my favorite coaster at the moment).

InvadR is seriously underrated. Its packed into such a tight space, the turns are all so sharp, the airtime is nonstop, super tight downward spiraling helix, first drop in a tunnel… personally i dont think you can beat that rickety character missing from most modern rides… smooth is great, but getting tossed around can be too. I think Alpengeist hurts your neck/head far more than InvadR, and thats steel.

Ranking Tempesto above Loch Ness is an insult to the historical significance, and rideability of Loch Ness. The rest of the ranking is pretty good though.

No way. Griffon over Apollo’s for sure. 1 word. Consistency. And can’t list rides you’ve never ridden.

That's a really good point. Apollo's Chariot is very inconsistent with the airtime. Griffon is good all the time!
