Since I've had my Maltese for 3 years, she's never had tear-stains.
I give her filtered water and she eats vegetables (raw/cooked broccoli, carrots, peas, lettuce) for snacks.
I mix 1 capful of Wellness dry food with 1 tablespoon of Wellness wet food.

it is not about diet most of the time, but genetic or allergy. if the veterinarian didnt find any allergies, it is genetic and nothing could be done about it, just daily cleaning what i do to my 16-year-old maltese. diet is crucial but no need to be fancy-pecy wellness.

Maltese are sweet, very affectionate and clingy to their owners. They don't like to be alone for long time. They don't shed much, Maltese have hairs like us, but they requires daily brushing. As for bath time, try to stick with premium oatmeal shampoos as they have hypoallergenic conditions. Where possible a retractable walking leash and harness is a safer options for Maltese. As for diet and fiber foods, stay with premium quality e.g. Science Diets is one of the best brands available. Stay away giving our (human) foods to them, I know it hurts but you're reducing of their lifespans. Other than that, Maltese have abundant energy and will bring you joy and happiness.

I am a firm believer in the Science Diet dog food. I had two Schnauzers that only got Science Diet and one lived to be 18 and the other was 19. We now have two more Schnauzers, a Malte, a white German Shepherd, and a Husky. They all get along very well. My Malte sleeps with us at night because she is the little diva. They all get Science Diet according to their age.

I inherited my mother's Maltese after she passed away in early 2015. He's now over 17 1/2 now and still acts like a puppy. She would have been so happy to see him live so long and healthy. Although his eyesight and hearing aren't so good anymore. Loving, docile, playful, good natured, friendly, fearless. I could go on and on. The sweetest little dog I've ever owned. Bossy though. He makes me sit. Seriously, he won't leave my side for a minute. I can't even go to the bathroom without him following me. They require professional grooming every six to eight weeks so I keep him in a puppy cut. Their hair is so fine that its very difficult to maintain if its long. He's my baby!

I’m so glad you mentioned clothes. Maltese are so small and have very low body fat so during cold seasons when they are outside they get the shivers. My Maltese is a year and 4 months. She is fully grown at about 5 pounds. Other people might look and think “what a ridiculous thing to do, putting clothes on a dog” but for a Maltese it is necessary and my dog actually likes it. She will go and pick up her shirt, bring it to me and just sit there in front of me like she’s saying “can you put this on me?” Lol

Here’s a small tip in case you weren’t aware - the reason why she has dark areas around her eyes is because she’s eating chicken, the chicken causes her tears to be darker. if you mind the dark areas then definitely put her on a beef recipe instead

Adorable dog. I had a Maltese for 14 years. Just died last week. He never had tear stains and looked cute even old. Last 5 years I fed him lots of cooked unseasoned chicken, turkey and fish mixed with rice or yams, apples and other fruit. His heart disease symptoms improved immediately when I took him off of store bought dog food. NO TAP WATER EVER!! Tap water has some minerals/contaminants depending where you live that is not good and can cause tear stains. Also some tap water is acidic which causes gut problems and yeast infection and tear stains. Most store bought dog food is not good. Tear stains are a symptom of a problem. Too much watery eyes from allergies, bad water, poor diet or hair in eyes. Address from inside out. Topical treatments don't work. Take care.

I have a 2 yr old Maltese and her tear staining was pretty bad in the beginning. In the process of trying to figure out how to clear the staining up and what was causing it, I found out that most dogs are allergic to all poultry. I decided to switch up her chicken diet to beef and salmon, 1 because beef is safe for dogs w allergies and 2 salmon/fish is good for their skin and ever since, the tear staining went away for good.

This is particularly helpful if you work crazy or sporadic hours. You'll REALLY thank yourself when the weather is bad and finding a friend to puppysit is so much easier.

Coco is so cute! 😍 I have 2, 8 year old maltese dogs. They've never had tear stains. Tear stains come through internally. I recommend changing her food and switch it up regularly. It's good that you give her grain free food. Try PureVita or another grain free with limited ingredients. Also, (really important) switch to a glass bowl for her drinking water....not ceramic or stainless steel. It's all just what I've heard helps and it works for my two. ☺

The tear stains are most likely caused by overflow of tears onto eyelids. The cause for that would be either 1) overproduction of tears due to eye pain/irritation or 2) inadequate drainage.
Some dogs have Little White Dog Syndrome where they are born with underdeveloped nasolacrimal puncta (holes in the corner of the eyes) where tears do not drain properly through the nasolacrimal duct into the nose/mouth. Sometimes, the holes can be plugged too, so the best thing would be to get it checked out by a vet! (I'm a vet student)

I would recommend you using Eye Envy on her eyes. It will get rid of the staining around her eyes. There is a liquid and a powder. It is important for eye health to address this eye issue as the darkness comes moisture. I was told that it is a yeast problem. I have a Maltese that started with tear stains. She is 14 years old now and has had no staining since she was a few months old.

I began when they were very small and I never had any trouble with eye staining until I quit for a couple of months. Then I had a heck of a time getting it cleaned up again. But once I did they never had stains anymore.

I have been told it has been banned in Australia where I live, my personal opinion is because it worked.

The spa facial cleaner is great, I am a groomer and I use this a lot on bulldogs to clean in between their wrinkles which can get stained. I also use it on my beagles face as he gets stains under his chin just from drooling. It smells amazing too

Hello! I leave food out for her to eat throughout the day for whenever she is hungry, she usually eats around the schedule I eat though. I'd say she eats about a 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of food per day, I hope that helps!

Hey, you have a very cute Maltese and so have I, looks like you are overlooking her tear stains problem, I believe you have tried many ways to clean it externally and are living in very clean environment. Have you ever changed her diet every 3 months or so, be sure no animal by-products and no artificial flavors in her food and treats? I did successfully with my maltese in 6 months gradually. Try it and be patient, good luck.

I was very aware of my dog's tear stains when she was pup and I'm seeing a lot of other owners opinions on here about what diet they should be on, be it chicken or beef yaddy yadda.
I switched my dog to mostly natural diet (chicken and some veggies) I mix a little dry food in there too cause I know it's good for her. Tears stains are gone. I'm just so happy I don't have to bleach them to get rid of them.

Aww, my Maltese is like 6 years old and he’s still a puppy! IDCAREEE how old he is lol! He has the greatest personality. I always say he’s little white fluffy dog that makes MEN love little white fluffy dogs!
He’s really the best though. He also follows me EVERYWHERE. And for SURE has separation anxiety.
A BIG thing when getting a Maltese is to understand it isn’t a dog that you can leave home alone for long periods of time. They need attention and to be around their owners as much as possible. So if you’re a big traveler/vacationer (or if you work A LOT, like.. you’re at work the majority of the day and so leave your dog home alone for most of the day) etc.. probably not the dog for you.

I am the owner of five Maltese, and none of them have the discoloration around the eye and the reason, and I know this sounds weird is bottled water. These stains are the result of a bacteria and that bacteria live in water. Now, I will tell you it takes a long time it took over a year for mine to lose the discoloration. Beef liver will accelerate the loss too. I would do both in combination, liver once a week and those stains will leave in less than a year.

    • @TrumpetReady
      @TrumpetReady Před 5 lety

That is what I do for mine as well with the bottled water. The water is horrible where I live anyway and we do not drink it so neither do my little ones.

I got my Maltese when she was a puppy, she started to get a little red at eyes and mouth. The groomer told me that it was her diet. She said no corn in her dog food and no liver treats and give her distilled water. It worked. Because just as soon as we changed her food that had cornmeal in it and stopped giving her the little liver treats and changed her water we had no more problems. The redness went away and never came back.

Because they are fragile and have separation anxiety, you have to take care of Maltese’s more than you would with other specific dogs. They love attention and cuddles, it makes them so happy! As long as you upkeep with their teeth, hair, and just them in general they should be okay!

Try changing the water, to help with the redness around her eyes. Don-t give her tap water. Or maybe it's from the food. Most dogs develop allergy to chicken in time.
