- It truly is an exciting time for the small capacity motorcycle market, with smaller displacement machines seeing a resurgence and many manufacturers releasing new and updated models in abundance. I was invited down to try a BRAND NEW 400 Scrambler by the guys at London Triumph and I zipped down as quick as I could.
After a cup of coffee and a catchup up with the team there I took out a brand spanking new Scrambler with only 9 miles on the clock for a blast through the centre of London.
Let me know in the comments below what you think of the new 400's from Triumph and how they stack against the competition. I'm really excited by the moves that Triumph have been making in 2023, with a new venture into MX and now a single cylinder offering that does NOT disappoint.
Thank you to Ethan & Will for the help filming this episode, hope you appreciated the addition of a camera car!

I wish people would stop comparing mid size single cylinder bikes to 1200cc multi cylinder machines. It is what it is. Singles have always been more fun than anything else.
So true they’re very different. My comparisons just come from what I’ve experienced previously so hopefully it’s a useful insight if people have ridden similar bikes
Some people want to go fast, some people just want to chill and have fun. There is a bike for both types of people.
Agreed; I’m excited about this bike. I have two speed triple 1200’s, a Thruxton 1200, and look forward to riding this bike and checking it out. So much of this just feels right: good enough power, small enough to move around town and type of off-road 99% of people actually do, and price point and quality.
The thing is for many of us with 1200s these smaller bikes are also really appealing as an economical daily runner and commuter alternatives to our bigger bikes. I appreciate the comparisons.

I dunno mate. I took an XT600 Tenere single all over Europe and Scandinavia a few years back. Don’t need massive cc’s to enjoy bikes.
I think it looks amazing. The brown seat fits the style perfectly 👌🏼
The most beautiful Scrambler 400x review, it almost felt like it was a Tom cruise movie without speed chase and stunts❤ from India
Keeping it safe to look after that deposit 😂 thanks for the kind words!
I LIKE the brown seat! Also, good to see tubeless tyres rather than the annoying tubes that Triumph put on the 900 Scrambler - and I don't have a problem with those mag 'spokes' - they're much prettier than a lot of other cast wheels. Glad that the exhaust has been mounted sensibly (unlike the 900), so that two panniers can be used and my overtrousers won't burn on the pipes! Yep, I'm going to try one out - if it goes half as good as it looks, I'll buy it.
I don’t know why but it just doesn’t make sense to me, but it’s such a minor thing on an excellently put together bike. Good point about tubeless - I’d missed that.
6ft 4 inch. Right fit, right look, quality and price. Going to test drive Truimph in Malaga. Cash ready
Best of luck!
I am 2 meter tall, do you think I fit well?
Same here I just booked the same way after test drive such smooth and refined bike.
Thanks for the review, many decades ago I started on a 400F Honda but I was always envious of my buddies Triumph. Now at 70 it might be time to get something smaller than my big Moto Guzzis.
That's a professional level production quality and editing. Great review also. Thanks.
Much appreciated!
damn
The production quality !
Awesome review! Excited to see more of Scrambler 400x!
Thanks Arjun!
OMG ! The brown seat is the best bit ! 👍👍👍
Oh wow! I have a Speed 400, and it's an incredible machine. Your videos are fantastic; keep up the excellent work.
Thank you! Enjoy the bike, can’t wait to try one
Very nice camera and setup! It was nice taking a tiny tour through London, thanks for sharing! I have the Speed version of the 400’s, just added 1000 miles to the odometer. I hope the buzziness / vibes I feel through the handlebars dissipates as time goes by. Makes my hand numb after a while of riding. I feel the throttle is jerky. Other than that, it’s a nice bike. I think I’ll have it for a couple years and then graduate to a big boy bike 😊
You’re welcome! Thanks for the comment. You might be able to get something for the bar vibrations, have a look into it
Great videography! I appreciate the effort, you earned a new subscriber.
Looking forward to returning to motorcycle riding after 10 years (bought a cheap bike when I was 18).
I think this Scramble is at the top of my list! Looks beautiful. Just need a bike to enjoy my rural backroads through the woods.
Thanks for the review.
Thanks Jared! Glad you’re here. Sounds like the scram fits the bill 🤘🏻
Great video and review as always Will. Love the cinematic camera, I’m not jealous!!! 🤣 The 400 Scrambler looks great, I can’t wait to check it out! 👍
Thanks Phil! It’s available for you should you ever need it mate!
@@Willieswheels You’re too kind! Great video! 👊
One of the best reviews of this bike to date. Thanks for posting/shaing.
I look forward to you doing a review of the Speed 400 also. Cheers! :)
You’re so kind! Thank you! Yes hoping to get both out for a comparison in the next few weeks
I`ve already got a Speed 400 on order, and will be test riding one soon. I love the Scrambler 400, but have opted for the Speed 400 because i wish to do a style job on it.
Great vid, really enjoyed it.
Ooh that’s exciting! I can’t wait to get on a speed 400, I think it’d complement my scrambler really well!
The camerawork, audio etc overall just love the production 💪🏼🤝
Thank you 🙌
Great review mate and excellent camera work/editing. That bike is a bargain considering the fit and finish. Triumph will win over a lot of potential Enfield customers with this one.
Thank you! Couldn’t agree more.
Lovely video and filming! I’d love to have this bike one day as a fun out and about bike in Cornwall 🤙🏼
I think it looks beautiful!
Cornwall seems like a great spot for one of these… tight twisty lanes yes please!
This a great, easy to watch, well produced, and edited video. Your presentational style will guarantee a success too…I’m keeping subscribed.
Thank you! Will do!
Hey Willey I liked your review.in fact Triumph 400 X is good for only tall persons because of its height and comfort. The break lever is also differently designed.Aboveall it's worth for money 🎉
I road the speed today befor buying the scrambler and the speedo was right on center 😁. Speed was wonderfull
Great video mate the production and information is top tier. Love love love them
Thanks Josh ❤️
Great review, mate. I demo’d the Speed 400 last week and I didn’t notice the offset speedo on that particular bike. The instrument cluster would be my only criticism of the bike - the tacho is useless. Couldn’t really fault the bike otherwise, not for the money and with expectations in check. So I ordered one.
Ah lucky you! I think it was a one off for this bike, quite a weird quirk!
I personally think the instrument cluster is fine. It is getting a little dated. The color TFT IMO is worse. The unreadable butterfly tachometer is the worse. The digital numeric readout is more legible on my Speedmaster and its tiny.
With modern bikes with rev limiter you really don't need a tachometer. If you are new to riding a tach might help but most likely you would rarely use it because your eyes are watching the road and the traffic. Experiences riders will quickly learn how and when to shift by rpm and feel.
@@jamesschneider3828 I’ve been riding since 2004, I couldn’t disagree with you any more.
Triumph should use your amazing cobble stone road footage on their promo 👏
Really happy that you love the bike. I've got it on pre-order at my dealer in carnival red (the good color for me :P).
Enjoy! The red also looks great 🙏🏻
Great review, nicely done!
I look forward to seeing your next video...hopefully one for Speed 400 alone and then another one for comparison between the two!
Thanks so much! That’s absolutely the plan. Hopefully they let me borrow one (or two) again 🙏🏻
Very excited about this machine.
Gorgeous bike, excellent review. Well done, mate!
Thanks Chief!
This is why this channel is my new go-to motorbike content platform. You guys though "how do we make cool motorcycle content?! Easy, just make it relatable ... with cinema-grade and camera crew production value" hahah !! Amazing result
Wow! That is so kind of you to say. Plenty more to come. Thank you 🙏🏻
I must say, this video is beautifully shot and a good review of the bike as well! cheers mate
Thanks so much!
Love this bro, your production quality has gone up a whole new level! Great stuff from N.Z!
Thank you mate! Appreciate you
Congrats for the video, really professional and by the way there are many good information about this new motorcycle. Now I’m much more anxious to receive the mine….(Sao Paulo/Brazil)….😅
Oi! Moito obrigado Rodrigo 🙏🏻 parabéns man, enjoy it. 🇧🇷
Thanks for a really nice review. I'm comparing this against a Zontes GK350 with a view to buying one of them. The Zontes is £1,000 cheaper but the quality of the Triumph makes the extra worthwhile I think. A ride on both will make up my mind.
Do check them out! Enjoy!
Thanks for the great review. I am looking forward to mine arriving in Lower Alabama. I plan to deliver bacon to my customers with it. Cheers.
Billie I bet your bacon is amazing man. Enjoy the Scram!
@@Willieswheels the Triumph accessories I like are the small windscreen, center tank pad, luggage rack, and the high mud guard.
Not sure if upgraded seat is worth the expense, but it does look sharp.
I want both the upper and lower engine bars. Still not sure if the upper one comes with the bike. The reviews from India say that it does. I still can’t get a straight answer on that.
I also like the bullet style turn lights. Again not sure it’s worth the add on price.
Luggage has been a big thought and I believe the Mosko Moto Reckless 80 will solve all my needs with a Triumph specific Cruz Tools kit in the Fatty Tool Roll.
For Navigation I will be using the REVER App with my IPhone on a Quad lock mount.
My only concern with the Scrambler 400x is if they had provided Sintered brake pads(as seen on the Speed 400) instead of the Organic pads so the brake bite is not so great comparatively but does the work. But Triumph says that those pads were added intentionally as a sharper brake bite during scrambling (soft-off-roading) may result in the downfall of the driver one too many times🤷🏻♂
But man, watching this video feels like I'm watching some high budget movie!! Quality of the content is too good!!! Great job!!👌🏼🤌🏼✌🏼
Great review. Video and audio is top notch!
The wonky dash is so odd. I haven’t heard anyone mention that, but it’s certainly noticeable in this video.
Thanks so much! I think it’s a one off mistake, based on some owners comment 🙏🏻
Test rode one over the weekend. I’m 6”2, 100kg and felt decent. Probably needed the preload on the rear adjusted. I’ve been riding for about 3 and a half years. Had a 250 Honda vtr first and then got a KTM 990 SMT. Had that for a year and rode it less than I did the 250. Sold that and now I’m on the search for a lower displacement retro style cruiser. The 400 feels like it needs an exhaust to make it livelier. Going to wait till the new husqvarna 401 comes out to test but then again there are some great second hand examples of early 2010’s t100 and thruxton’s about. A lucky conundrum to be in I guess😅
Safe riding from Adelaide, Australia
Thanks Oscar! Yea the new 401’s look pretty great too. We’re spoilt for choice now in the smaller displacement offerings! I’d snap up a Thruxton before they start getting more rare for sure
Great job!
what an amazing video quality bro just perfect
Glad you enjoyed
Beautiful bike and I think triumph and baja will do really well with these world wide poss the best seller of 2024
way to bring the professional filming!!!! love it. great effort
Thank you! 🙏🏻
This quality & content in a review, with possibly all technical details is of very high standard. The bike is good for a single cylinder is good to know.
Thanks!
Man! If you added a Hans Zimmer soundtrack on this, you'd win an oscar. The camera quality and grading is PREMIUM!!!! bravo. I also really enjoyed your review. Great info, nice and relaxed. Thanks for putting this up
Danny, thank you. Honestly I’m really passionate about both motorcycles and filmmaking so this is a joy to do. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Good Review & Amazing Cinematography ❤
Glad you liked it!
Hats off to the videographer. Kept the scene moving. Few static shots. Great transitions. Effective use of time.
And the 4D 😍
Thanks! This one was a test for the new rig and it worked so well. Requires more of a crew (operator and driver) but definitely worth the investment!
@@Willieswheels Good test. I love how (relatively) accessible gear is nowadays. Ten, twenty years ago to get this sort of quality you'd be in debt until the present day.
Love this!! 🎉
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Great Bike, Great Review! Last week I ordered my 6th Triumph. It's a Scrambler 400 X. Before that I had three Scrambler 900 AC and two Tiger 800. I read in other reviews that the 400cc engines are affected by constant-speed jolting, I hope mine won't have that. Did you notice something ?
Great review! Looks like the wonky speedometer is an issue with just that bike. I've taken test ride here in India and checked out a couple of bikes in the showroom, it looked just fine.
Brilliant video, my friend. The way it's been captured and put together is seriously high production! I'm so glad 400s are making a come back. I still have my ScramblerDucati Sixty2 and it's so much fun. It's not the best on motorways and fast moving A-roads, but around town or on the back roads, it comes alive. I bet ScramblerDucati feel like total idiots for stopping the production of the Sixty2 and leaving the market open for Triumph.
Thanks mate! This definitely is the era of small capacity resurgence!
They were Idiots selling it at just a few dollars less that its big brother, the Sixty Two was a great bike and still is, but it was very expensive when introduced.
Great video production, enjoyed that review, looks like a little winner, RE Himalayan next pleaseeee
Thanks Peter! Yes hoping to get one on loan soon 🙏🏻
Bike looks great and sound decent tbf , nice 1st impressions vid mate ,
Thanks mate!
Picked up mine today in Western Australia...perfect for our bush trails plus you can ride it 300k's to get tobthevtrail camp overnight and head home next day. No can't say my instrumentation is offset.
Sounds like the perfect spot to enjoy. Stay safe!
They look the business 😎
All the uk reviews seem positive going to take a look at one as thinking of downsizing from my 1200gs
Definitely recommend a test ride! You could probably have enough for the scram & speed 400 😂
nice job on the review
..still have only seen photos but the speed-o screen on photo on the local dealer bike looks all level..
also USA dealer price listed here is 4995 for Speed 400 and 5595 for Scramber same as you mentioned..
but USD is less in value to UK currency so, why USA buyers get it for that amount i wonder, but looks good to me
Our price includes VAT (20%) and you will need to add your local taxes…so that takes care of Exchange difference.
It looks lovely. I wish the Honda 500x had such good looks.
Great Review!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
The bike is beautiful, and so is your city, ❤
It really is!
Great review- also have the 1200 but now think it needs a kid brother! What jacket are you wearing btw?
Thanks! They’d be like two peas in a pod… maybe the speed 400, I’ll see how that feels! It’s a Triumph Beck wax jacket.
Hello Willie mate, is it possible to take the off the handlebar brace? Defo considering this as my first bike.
Good question, I believe so - will double check when we compare this and the speed 400 👍🏼
I have no idea what you’re talking about and I love it
Just enjoy the ride brother
Love the transition sound effect - is a Leica M camera.
Close! It’s an old Olympus 🙏🏻
smoooooth!@@Willieswheels
Excelent review, please trying play speedmaster 1200 too
U guys did an amazing job on the cinematography! I was surprised when I saw 4k subscribers, Expected 100-300k :O
U guys earned a sub!
Thanks so much! Just enjoying what we do 😅
Best Review
Nice review well done---I am waiting on mine to arrive--If you get a chance can you give feedback on highway speed vibrations please? There are various reports and someone will change the gearing at some point meantime while i wait i would love to hear the vives at 50-60-70mph --cheers!
Thanks! Yes absolutely - I’m hoping to take out the speed & scrambler 400 for a more in depth comparison.
Nice! Subbed and will be watching-cheers! @@Willieswheels
The mag wheels mean tubeless tyres can be used (without fancy spokery). Easier to fix on a ride if you pick up a puncture.
Good point!
saw this and the street 400 at triumph Plymouth, they sold 26 so far, excellent quality and finish. C'mon Honda bring on the CB350
Same for my local Bulldog Triumph - sold out pre orders and they’re flying out the shop!
I bought one now waiting for delivery in the USA.
Hope you enjoy it!
Good production quality and a good review.
Just want to highlight a fact about this bike which got missed- it is manufactured in India by Bajaj Auto under a joint venture between Bajaj and Triumph. Also, It retails here in India at around 3100 Gbp on road. ✌️
I didn’t mention the production you’re right. For me it shouldn’t affect the performance of bike - too many people in the UK/US get caught up on where something is made
@@Willieswheelsaffect the performance? Oh no no no!This bike is wicked! I have been owning one for last couple of months and it's totally bang for the buck!
The reason for mentioning the manufacturing is because as you said if it came with a price tag of 8k, people would happily accept that but the only reason Triumph could pull this beast off at such a low price is due to the mass manufacturing magic of Bajaj. After helping KTM out, they are gonna do wonders with Triumph!
@@Willieswheels….where something is made is exceptionally important. When countries outsource majority of manufacturing, the long term macroeconomic damages are detrimental to to the successful future of a proper, true middle class. The number of people on government assistance has grown exponentially since the start of outsourcing the manufacturing of goods and services to the Chinese, Indians, and Central America
All a direct result of rising costs caused by government policies & the constant need by a capitalist economy to make profit over sustainable practices, maintaining a happy workforce & standards. It’s not economically viable to manufacture in the UK because other nations have out developed & out innovated the UK for decades. The quality we’re seeing out of India, South Asia etc is excellent. Look at fender guitars - the Mexican line was always the “cheap” version, but they have been producing products at an equal level or higher per $ than the US for years.
No mention of how good each brake is, or long or short gearing. Nice review, but only proves it’s a good town bike. Take it down lanes!
I hope to do a more spirited and in depth review in future, if I can secure a longer term loan (that doesn’t have brand new tyres). Unfortunately we only had a few hours with the bike & we started in central so I decided to only review what I could experience properly and not make anything up. Appreciate the feedback though Paul 😊
Nice vlog. By the way the kerb weight is 185kgs.
Thanks! Wet weight in the UK is 179kg - I quoted the speed 400 🥲 apologies for that!
07:10 The Hunter 350 is actually heavier than this one
They should sell a shed load of them at the price, and with the way things are going on the roads at the moment in the years to come I'm not sure if big power bikes are going to be very much use, other than to get rid of your licence fast in the 20mph zones 😉 and on the subject of is it a good idea for triumph to bring these out yes because unlike Harley Davidson who simply can't see that you need entry level bikes at affordable prices to get people into the brand, triumph obviously have understood that point 👍🏻😉 even if they are late to the game 😂
Don’t get me started on the Harley mess… the CVO announcement is another example of how out of touch they are. Better late than never!
Great bike love it. Also like your jacket. What is it😊
Thank you! It’s a Triumph Beck wax jacket. Very nice except the zip and a popper has broken already 👎🏻
@@Willieswheels Thanks. That’s annoying.
Sorry Willie , apologies for my previous comment.
Watched the entire video and look forward to you getting out into twisties.
All good my man ❤️
@@Willieswheels Thank you
Honest, considered, refreshing.
Thank you! 🙏🏻
I wish people wouldn't obsess over exhaust noise. As a long term biker I've never understood it.
I personally find it really important as part of the whole package of riding experience. It’s such a visceral, tactile experience and sound can completely change the feel of a bike. That’s my opinion 😊
That wonky clock was irritating me from when you set off, hope it can be put straight. Otherwise lovely bike at a great price. Nice review.
Thanks Splodge! I’ve been told in the comments here that others are dead straight, so seems it was a blip
15:30 Got my bike a month ago. My speedo is perfectly aligned. It must be a manufacturing defect. In india it costs around 3.2L INR. Approximately 3100 GBP
£4000 here in Thailand. A lot of motorcycle for the money. I believe the one going to Europe are made in Triumph factory in Thailand.
That’s amazing money! Interesting on the speedo, it must be an error from the build on this one 😅
Hopefully we see it soon here in TH I cant wait!@@Alsinsin
@@drd3816 @drd3816 you can view them at Triumph dealerships, at least in Pattaya. They will have test bikes starting next month. You can put a deposit for THB5,000. Mine is scheduled for delivery in July, last green one from the allocation they had last month.
Definitely gotta test this bike out.
Seems like the perfect city bike, it's the perfect competition for the Scram 411.
Triumphs new LED headlights are the best. They have turn the ugly circle LED lights into something stylish. I honestly would love that light style on my older scrambler over the bates headlight.
I’ve ridden both (review of the scram 411 next up!) and the 400X destroys the Enfield in every way other than price.
@@Willieswheels that is no surprise
I owned this bike for last 2 months and it is really a fun to ride machine. And yes it's speedometer is not at offset. fixed properly, i don't know why your bike's looks like this.
Brown seat looks great and the wheels. The speedo is weird tho haha
Like the look (enough) but spokes are way better if you were to actually scramble the thing
No matter how good a bike is, if it doesn't look good, people won't buy it. This bike looks good and I really hope it sells well. It should, because there's not much else in this class that looks as good.
Its incredible how Yamaha doesn't give us the XSR 300, i hate the alien looking mt03
@@hydrotricine Yes, so many motorcycles (and cars) are so ugly these days ... I remember back in the mid 70s all motorcycles looked good. Now, it's a crazy mix of weird designs.
How tall are you and inside leg measurement I’m 6” 2” love the look of the bike but concerned it may leave my legs scrunched up
Im 6’3” and 34” inseam
@@Willieswheelsso your legs weren’t too scrunched up?
@@simonforshaw7961 not excessively. It’s quite a spacious bike as you can see!
Hello! But do you feel any issues yet. Though the product is great.
Here in India many owners are having issues like Stalling, RPM Fluctuations on idle, Alloy bend, Engine noise. And Brand here are not acknowledging it fully. We would like to here if any issues there. I know its too soon for you to feel as pretty new rides.
I’ll ask my dealer - that doesn’t sound great!
@@Willieswheels Agree. Plus here to using sub standard engine oil brand HP Prolube. We are demanding Castrol as they are using castrol in there higher cc engines. But i am enjoying the ride but still these issues making us disappointed.
That's a sample of "Made in INDIA" product. Kudos to Bajaj and Triumph.
Big kudos!
Can you tell me how tall are you? I’m wondering if it will fit the 6’4 guy.
6’3” for me, felt great.
@@Willieswheels Thank you mate! It looks great also.
Triumphs design and expertise combined with Bajaj's legendary manufacturing experience, Indian manufacturing quality(4 times better than chinese, arguably equal to europe) is a no brainer. This will be selling like 'hot paranthas' in any market as it is already in India.
Agreed! Hot Paranthas 😂
Something is weird about the relation between the instruments and the bars.
Tubed or tubeless tyres?
Tubeless I believe
Lovely looking bike, would be even better if it came with spoked wheels, good review, tempted to trade my trident in for one.
Agreed all round!
Much higher revving to get maximum torque to say the Royal Enfield 350 Classic, plus it sounds weak. I suppose horses for courses.
You need to review some MUTT 250's.
Would love to!
@@Willieswheels I'd recommend testing the SABBATH with it's big chunky nobbily tires & the FSR for vertically challenged people (like myself).
Roger that! I’ll see what I can do
I own one. Amazing bike..the speedo unit on the one you have here is not fit properly.
Roger that. Thanks for the help!
Gave it a test ride - gear box was terrible. Just would not go from 2nd to 3rd and the actual gear lever felt like a repurposed kitchen utensil. It does look the business though.
That doesn’t sound good! Hopefully a duff box
Be nice with a TFT dash
I reckon it would be overkill for this bike at this price point.
Triumph really missed out not making that a twin 400
Completely different bike, think the single is the best choice jere
It is an interesting bike. I have to say though Johnny come latelys get no respect from us in the motorcycle world. Royal Enfield is simply eating every one’s lunch and now you guys are scrambling. I purchased a brand new Continental 650 last year and it is the Bees knees. A phenomenal machine. I also own a 2001 Triumph that Triumph don’t care to service , finding parts requires in-depth ebay searches. Any way I love them both but ……
Haha very true. Pioneers absolutely, hopefully some more competition will move the whole segment even further
