- This solution really stops sandflies from biting and my family is not allergic to it, but my neck gets itchy if I use it there however my arms are not sensitive to it so test it first. Equal parts Dettol Antiseptic Liquid, Methylated Spirits and Baby Oil with a small amount of citronella Lamp Oil. Please watch to find out how much Citronella and some extra tips, don't just read this note.

I take a biro pen and draw a circle around the kids bites and they stop scratching. But best to eat lots of marmite before going camping bugs avoid biting

I’m pretty sure the dettol alone is toxic
Hi Marco, Dettol is an antiseptic solution used in Australia to kill germs on open wounds in human skin. It would not be appropriate to drink but it did not hurt my children's skin when they were only 2 and 4 years old. This solution certainly protected them and I had used a regular sand fly protection and they just jumped straight on me and not my children. But its effectiveness reduces after an hour.

This product called dettol is sold by chemists to kill germs in wounds, for cleaning cuts and abrasions. You can always spray a child's clothing. It is an alternative to aeroguard that really works for sandflies for one hour. It is better than the bites and them being scratched and getting infected. As I explained I cannot use it on my face as I find my face is too sensitive to it. But my children were not at all sensitive to it and certainly did not get bitten. Whereas I did with a different insect repellant on that is commonly sold in Australia. My Mum also used this for about 20 years when ever she went out in the garden at Lightning Ridge at times when the sand flies were active. She needed to because they attacked her and the bites were so itchy she always scratched them and they often became infected sores. Just a light spray mist is all it took to protect my children. But like me some people will feel itchy on sensitive skin such as a face from the spray. I am not telling people to use this I am just offering an option for people who live in areas that often have sandflies and need something that works really well. I had a neighbour who went fishing and said he came home with over 60 bites, not from fish but sandflies!
Use TCP if you're worried. Dettol is diluted in this recipe but avoid if you're allergic like me.
Not to find methylated spirits in Canada. Any suggestion for a substitute?
Google says that in Canada & the US methylated spirits is called denatured alcohol or methyl hydrate and it may also be called spirits.

I cannot do that Keith because I don't go to Lightning Ridge or the beach near Coffs Harbour any more where sand flies are prevalent. Imagine trying to film sandflies landing on an arm then spraying and how long would I have to wait for them to come back again. Would you want to watch one hour of a video shot of nothing happening to the skin on my arm. My Mum shows you a spay on her arm with a spray bottle of the mixture. That is how you use it or spray your clothes to keep them away.
Sandflies are virtually invisible - l dont think these ladies would go to all this trouble to scam us into increasing the profit margins for these products. 🤔
