It still amazes me how LITTLE Nintendo showed of this game leading up to its release. There is SO MUCH here, ESPECIALLY for fans of the franchise, and I had NO IDEA the game would be this good. I am at 100 hours in, Ch. 20 (purposely playing slow, grinding, making it last because I love it), and I agree with your review 100%. I love your love for this game and franchise because I feel the same way and it's nice to see someone sharing this love. The game deserves big success. Thank you! :)

@@NuiYabuko What I’m “on about” is it was absolutely not everywhere, especially if you compare it to how Nintendo markets other games like Mario, Animal Crossing. Etc., even previous Fire Emblem games. We didn’t have much of a lead up either. Normally we would find out about this game being made way in advance, but this game we found out just a few months ago, they barely said anything about it, and then it was released. So to me, a lot more could’ve been shared and said. As a fire emblem fan who doesn’t watch television, but is online a lot every day, it’s crazy that I didn’t see any of the crazy marketing you guys are acting like existed lol.

The Tiki one can be done before chapter 10 on hard somewhat easily IMO.
The wave 2 DLC stuff should be done after chapter 10 if you ask me.
Obviously it's up to how good of a player you are and what kind of units you have and rng.
I tried Hector's map around chapter 11 or 12 th (again hard difficulty) and it wasn't impossible but you must expect that Hector can deal 40-60 damage to certain units and a certain unit type is needed if you want to deal 'real' damage to him.
So be careful if you play classic.
Also I would like to point out that if you have the correct emblems you will get extra dialogue.
      I hope I could help you :)

Three Houses bored me with its long winded support conversations, large & empty monastery explorations, and subpar social interactions; whereas Engage is focused on why I fell in love with the series many years ago - the tactical combat. Three houses
If you want an easier game with multiple paths and a great expansive story with relatable characters, try 3 houses. If you want a very simple shorter story with over the top personalities, try engage. Even though I do think it's more difficult you could always play with casual mode so you don't lose your units if they fall in battle. 3 hopes is a dynasty warriors game and not mainline fire emblem. There isn't really any reason to play if you haven't played 3 houses. My suggestion is three houses as it is not only easier, but is a much better story with multiple storylines. They are also better at showing stats, consequences of potential movements, and explaining game mechanics better than any other game so it's a great casual beginner fire emblem.

      @Ultimabuster92 Před rokem +1

I agree. There WERE at least other objectives SOMETIMES. Like defence in chapter.. 8, was it? or escape in chapter 11 and 16, i think. But yes. Most of the time it was just to kill the bosses. What saved this game however and what made it REALLY fun were the map gimmicks. Fog of War aside, because i hate Fog of War everything else was creative. We had avalanches, vulcanic eruptions, miasma, MANY maps with balistas and such. Maps where your army was scattered across the map. Most of the time the pre battle preperations were where the fight started and after you started the map your whole plan was wrecked because the map gimmick was revealed. I love that, to be honest. And can i say something about the Emblem paralogues? SOOOO good. If you tackled them with the recommended level, they were TOUGH. Ike's paralogue for example was probably the most fun i EVER had in a Fire Emblem game. When Ike tore down that building i honestly jumped a bit and just like that everything went to s**t. If i hadn't killed him THAT turn, i would've been murdered. And it was tough

This is probably one of my favorite FE games to date. Gameplay wise it’s my favorite, period. But once you factor in the story and character, I do prefer some other games, but that is not saying the game and characters are bad at all!
At first I didn’t like how one-note the characters were. Especially the Firiene characters, but I as I unlocked the support conversations, I was surprised by the hidden depth the characters had. I mean I shouldn’t have been since I’ve played plenty of other FE games and know how they work, but still. I hear many people talking about it, but the ally notebook was a fun feature that gives some incentive to unlock the support convos and gave backgrounds to all the characters. It was a nice touch. I actually really do like the characters. Some more than others, but it’s an overall good cast.
The story was very simple and kinda cliche. Do I mind? Nope. It had its moments especially at the end, but nothing new at all. But it’s an anniversary game and the story does celebrate all the different parts FE games and their stories. It does it very well to! I think the biggest issue the game had was the script. Some of the script was just a wee bit cringe, but it was only in the beginning acts and some one lines here an there. But regardless it was fun. The voice acting was great. The way I see it, FE Three Houses and FE Engage had two different objectives and they both achieved them well.
Honestly 10/10 game for me. The gameplay is all I need. The story is 7.5/10 and the characters are 8/10.

FE Three Houses: gameplay 8/10, story 8.5/10, characters 10/10.
      FE Fates (Conquest):
      Gameplay 9/10, Story, 5/10, characters 7/10.
      FE Awakening:
      Gameplay 8/10, story 8/10, Characters 9/10
      FE Echoes:

Thank you for this review. I’m new to the Fire Emblem series and this is my first FE game and I liked it - A LOT. I know Engage gets a lot of hate mainly for its “mediocre” story but I don’t care what others think and I’m so glad that I gave this underappreciated game a chance. I finished the game with DLC last night after 201 hours. I know it’s crazy and it’s not supposed to last that long, but I purposely took my time. Many times I’ve also lost track of time while playing. And that’s because I really REALLY enjoyed my time with this game. So much that I’m actually sad that it’s over.
    9.5/10 for me
    - Gameplay: I played hard/casual. I even had an Excel sheet where I planned their inherited skills, SP points, Bond fragments, weapon engravings, etc. T_T the gameplay is amazing.
    - Graphics: I like the art style and the game is so colorful - it’s STUNNING!!
    - OST: I like it! SOLM’s Bright Sandstorm is such a banger so I made it as my default skirmish music
    - Characters: I love reading their supports. I’m also one of the few who liked Alear’s hair design lol but especially now knowing that there’s a reason behind it. I played as male Alear and he is now one of my favorite characters
-Voice acting: VAs did an amazing job. Their voices fit the characters so much
    - Story: for a tribute/anniversary game I enjoyed its simplicity.
I hope more people would give this game a chance like I did because it’s needs more appreciation. I’m going to play 3H soon and I’m sure I would I enjoy it as well, but I know Engage will always hold a special place for me as the game that made me a new FE fan.

I LOVED this game. One of my favorite FE games in a while. That said, the story is mixed. I like the overall plot points a lot, its a good story with some impactful ideas. However the execution is brutal, the individual moments are written poorly and never land with the impact they could have. The character art is definitely at its worst, especially when you see previous game art while melding rings, but I still found myself loving a lot of characters by the end.

    • @krismarshall3803
      @krismarshall3803 Před rokem +2

"Character art is definitely at its worst" Hold up XD. There's a lot to dissect from that lol. Like it pretty much is on the same vein of "good and bad" the 3DS and further games had (albiet some of PoR and RD). Like Ike's games, they had this thing were they used over-saturated colors for the characters. Like they used the option on the farthest to the right of the color wheel. Fates and Awakening (though I don't have this complaint but the try hards do) bring up how its the point where the series developed into over-the-top anime tropes with appearances and the women got extra horny outfits.
*sliding over Echoes cuz there really wasn't anything wrong with that, even objectively with appearances*
3H....oh boy. People don't want to admit but the cast really was 50/50. In that the other 50 was just boring to look at. Like FE has always been 50/50 on the anime/medieval scale. 3DS made it like 70/30 with anime vs medieval....3H made it 30/70 with Anime vs Medieval. Some of the designs straight up are boring to look at. Let alone the school uniforms made everything such a drab until time-skip. Never again do I want a series to go back to school cuz that kills creativity. Some of our cast look like....literal background characters. As in there is nothing special about them. The color palette was muted as hell. This is what happens when you hire the BL artist who drew freaking UtaPrince *eyerolls*
Engage: Need we repeat what has been said? Colgate hair, some of their outfits being so over the top. Majority of the cast being the same age range with appearances.

Merrin I like but walking around with a wolf tail seems like she was made for furries. Celine's hair just looks gross. Princess Timerra looks like she dresses to intentionally turn people's heads when they see her but I think that's part of her character. Idk what the deal with Panette is so I don't know if they are scars or not in her face she has a lot going on with her overall design as well. The only issue with Yunaka are the stars in her hair and face. I don't know with a lot of these characters if they have face paint, tattoos, or what the deal is. Ivy is mostly fine but the roses, spikes, and face guard add up to be too much for me. Lastly I'm not a fan of the Rosado character either. I know we have had characters like him in the past but I feel he also suffers from bad writing as well since he seems to only care about cute and comes across somewhat vain. I think most of my choices if you removed a thing or two they would look better but the theme seems to be for half the characters to look as obnoxious and attention grabbing as possible. I think the biggest issue is that there are too many of these characters. If you had just one like Yunaka or Ivy it wouldn't matter but when plenty are on screen together it feels like too much. Again, most of them didn't really bother me (though I can't say I'm a fan of Panette's design). I do think if you dive into some of the support conversations you can maybe gather some reasons for why the characters are designed the way that they are. Hortensia for example had to use her cuteness to survive in the royal court or Yunaka being overly cheery and bubbly to hide her past. I think these aspects are reflected in their designs, but I also won't argue that they are exaggerated and can be off putting.

Triangle Strategy is an amazing game, it has an amazing story the gameplay is also great but many people had a problem with the fact that Triangle Strategy put more time and efforts in the story than gemeplay and you can end up in a half hour or even an hour long cut scene. On the other hand Engage is the exact opposite where the gameplay is ridiculous strong but the story is very underwhelming, so yeah... I wished we could fuse Triangle Strategies brilliant story with FE Engage gameplay.

Most of FE stories were mediocre european medieval fantasy where hero's party defeats evil dragon at the end.
Like the only FE games where they tried and somewhat succeed with a story was the Tellius saga (2 games, the gamecube one and the Wii one) and 3H. Every other game had some generic story.

It is a really good game. Gameplay is amazingly fun, the presentation is phenomenal. I mean, look at Three Houses, i love that game to death but you can't deny that it didn't look pretty. They fixed it here. Story and characters may be a step down from Three Houses but my initial fear, that they are too shallow or uninteresting didn't come true in the end. It is true that the characters are very tropey, but once you read enough supports you'll notice that there IS some depth to them. You only need a little patience, the C-Supports are VERY shallow sometimes, but there are good ones too. The story is simple and predictable, yes, but it also works. It is good enough. And the difficulty! Oh boy the difficulty. I also played on Classic/Hard and i always found myself in a tough spot once i got too comfortable, the game keeps you on your toes at all times and i can't WAIT to play on maddening.

    Storytelling was my problem.
I'd prefer less characters with more complete arcs.
I'd prefer specific but actual romances.
I'd prefer if not everyone was kinda-into-everyone.
I'd prefer this series (like many other Jrpgs) didn't fall in the damn loop of "everyone is everyone's bestie with cheezy dialogues"
I'd prefer better gameplay- cutscene transitions.
That being said, I think the game is technically and gameplay-wise, it's a great step forward.

Yeah, the animations are fuking amazing in this game.
Everyone praises the GBA games for being as flashy as they are, but I find myself turning off animations because of how repetitive they are.
Genealogy/Thracia does a much better job of portraying the flow of battle because it has alternating animations for successive attacks as well as some classes having multiple critical animations. Engage's feels more like a 3D version of the Jugdral games with the flashiness of the GBA games.
Storywise, it really got interesting after like chapter 20ish where a lot of backstory is revealed, but it felt kind of empty because I wish the whole story was as good as the latter part.
Fanservice in this game is also great. All the remixes for the paralogue chapters are also amazing with my favorites probably being Celica, Sigurd, Leif, and Roy's remixes.
Though a little strange thing I noticed is Sigurd talking a bit too much about what happens in FE4, arguably the one game you should play blindly to get the full emotional effect of the story.
Adding on to that I also noticed a strange emphasis on Sigurd in this game. He has a more prominent role in the story than the other emblems, even Marth arguably, since Marth is mainly relevant for being Alear's first ring. Is this for the Japanese fans or are they getting us interested in him for the rumored FE4 remake?
    **spoilers**
Of all the chapters you have an emblem for, he is collectively the one you have the longest for (Marth is gone for like half the game). He and Leif (who is also Sigurd's nephew) are the first of the original six rings you get back. He also seemed to act as a sort of de facto leader of the emblems (not saying he is, but he gives off that impression), I especially noticed this in the discussion the emblems had after you beat Chapter 18.
AND he was also the emblem that Lumera personally used/trusted.
Yeah there is still a lot of Marth emphasis, but it mainly has to do with his personal connection to Alear, not really the overall story.
Moving on from Sigurd I wish we saw more of past Alear, I wanna see more of what they went through. That whole emotionless personality really intrigued me. I also really dig that red dark design, wish it was some sort of unlockable skin for beating the game or something.

I feel like Three Houses took the classic tropes of Fire Emblem and breathed new life into them by adding complexity with characters like Byleth and Rhea and the truth behind everything. Just my opinion but I feel like they haven't found the way to appease all in the fan base. It seems when they release a best in the series like Awakening and Three Houses with great stories and subdued characters with some quirks, they go way too overboard with it in the next game and the narrative falls flat. Goofiness like face rubbing and waking people up with over the top, cringe, wacky designed, attention grabbing characters takes precedence over relatable characters or am interesting story. I feel like with fates though they just tried too much. With Engage it feels like they didn't try at all and that stereotypical, wacky designed, one dimensional characters are expected to make up for a lack luster story. I feel like we never got to learn enough about the lord's and why they had games centered around them in the first place. I know they say the series never had big personalities in the older titles but they feel like props more than anything. Great and unique gameplay however and one of the best in that regards with unique great new mechanics so it certainly is conflicting for me.

Have to respectfully disagree about the story/characters. I have played every FE game since FE7, and I think the writing of this game is by far the worst, and that is saying a lot as I also consider the Fates storylines (especially Revelation) to be actively bad. I found myself skipping over half of the supports, something I have never done. It was lazy, and I really don't want it to be a standard going forward with the series.
I also didn't care for the music. Thats not to say it was bad, but i feel the previous two entries (Echoes and 3H) were far superior with music.
Now that I got that out of the way, I am loving the gameplay and the versatility that each new game has. The characters and emblem combinations are numerous, and that adds a lot to the replay value. And that is huge. You can skip a bad story, but you can't skip bad gameplay.
I'm glad you enjoyed the aspects that I didn't, but I will be curious to see if your opinion changes as time passes. I don't think this game will be looked back on as fondly as others in the series.

I agree 100%. My first FE game was Engage and even after finishing it I was like: the story is so meehhhh but the gameplay was amazing so let me try Three Houses and I was like: WOW the story is like 20 times better the gameplay in Engage is better than in Three Houses but not by much, so I liked 3H way more than Engage.
I also agree that the music is much better in 3H the Edelgard music with the lyrics the main theme is so Impact full, full of emotions and the lyrics fit 1 to 1 the story of the game. I cried after I finished the game and started to understand the lyrics in set song, singing from Edelgard's perspective leaving this world to Dimitri if she dies, if she doesn't like in her own route then the song doesn't play what makes sense because the lyrics say: "I wish I could stay".
I'm now playing FE Awakening and I also think Awakening is better than Engage. Awakening maybe doesn't have the same quality of animations, music, voice acting because yeah is a 3DS older title with less budget but the gameplay is as good as in all other FE games and the story is better than in Engage but so far my favorite FE is definitely Three Houses hands down.

Maybe it wouldn't have been as bad if they didn't drip feed you SP to buy them, but good god you need an almanac to know who has what skills to buy and which characters should have them, and how they should gel together to even be competitive in some of the missions. This is one of the harder FE games if you haven't studied how to break the game with certain skill combinations. So, grind to get skills, study the game to find the right load outs, then you can play. It's terrible honestly...I prefer the simpler days of picking the characters you like best, and forming a strategy with them, rather than with what skills you've grinded for.

Story is a letdown coming off of Three Houses, and most characters are charming but simplistic. I know Jean is always going to say something about training to be a doctor, Chloe about how the situation relates to a fairy tale, or Clanne or Framme fanboying/girling over the Divine One. Everything in the story up to chapter 11 at least has been pretty bland and predictable. I had absolutely no reaction to who the hooded character was revealed to be.
Supports are kind of whatever, seem to be not too far off from how they've been since Awakening anyway, but the Emblem supports are somewhat disappointing. I get there are so many combinations of Emblems and characters that they can't create something in depth for all of them but you can very obviously tell they set up X amount of statements with X amount of responses for the Emblem supports, and they're normally just a couple lines then done.
Gameplay is fantastic, presentation is a definite step up, probably the best in the series, but the story needs really impress me by the end to be at the top of the list but i don't think it will.
