1977 and I am working on the E-Type in the driveway, blasting this whole album; sharing with neigbors. Maybe some of them didn't appreciate it like me. I didn't care, I was young and ...... It just made me feel great!!!!!
It’s a blockbuster! I’ve been freaked by this eternal song ever since I heard it over four decades ago. Everyone on jamming on the stand is on point! Larry Carlton’s screaming banshee guitar, Wilton Felder’s pumping and throbbing horn, Joe Sample’s staccato Yamaha notes, and the seamless harmony backing these frontliners! Boy what a sound!
NYC ....walked into a show..Les Mann, Brecker Bros and these guys at the Palladium in 1977 and was blown away as they opened with Sweet n Sour.. bought the record the next day..been a fan ever since...
Larry Carlton is my favorite guitarist of all time-this is around the time he was recording Royal Scam(1976) and Aja(1977) with Steely Dan.The Crusaders are jazz/fusion royalty.
In my opinion this is the greatest song ever, heard it in 1977 and was mesmerized, and to this day it is still my favorite song by any group anywhere, anytime. This song changed my life, what great memories The Crusaders gave me through the years.....when I die this will be the song at the end of my funeral when everyone is walking out, and that is what they will remember me by..what a way to go........Thank you Crusaders!!
I have always been gaga about this particular album, and this song. It's so full of energy. Even when I am getting ready to go to sleep at night, am I still shaking my booty to this jam. Very well put together, and orchestrated. I will never stop playing this song. It gets mellow, in the middle, it breaks out, and oh my good lord it jams out so good at the end, and then has a sweet ending. Thank you Crusaders. I love all of your music! I just learned today that Joe Sample is deceased. I was torn apart. He was a pioneer of music. Much love to all that appreciates this group of musicians!👋🏾
Simply irresistable..... you simply cannot ignore this tune ,it grabs you from the opening bar ,and takes you on a musical safari,a rollercoaster ride....thank you so much for this post
Ahhhh, FINALLY. I keep trying to find other 70s Smooth Jazz artists and jazz that sounds like this, but haven't had any luck until today. This is what I've been craving.
Ricky A Doyle that is so well said. Today’s music is pretty bad. I’ve pointed this out to my 17 yo....luckily she gets it. I hope. Where HAVE all the flowers gone!.?
My cousin would come home from college and bring back this awesome Jazz/Fusion. It kind of distracted me from the Disco era that was starting to take over the airwaves.... in a good way.
Timmy Regisford at the 1st Club Shelter in NYC used to play this around 11am - 1pm (we got there around 1am in the morning) and the dancers used to go crazy...Workin' out Lofting or Freestylin' (style of club dances)...incredible to witness!!!
Sample and Felder RIP, so good, loved his rhodes work real delicate and nice runs, always a big groove and pocket to play in. Guitarists Carlton and many others. Beautiful horn work, sticks hooper such a great jazz groove band.
One of the first albums I ever bought (along with Festival by Santana and Right On Time by the Brothers Johnson). Still an incredible musical adventure...
Jazz funk at its best! Of all the Crusaders' tracks this was the one that got me up on the dance floor and so my fav track. Had the priviledge to see them at the Hammersmith Odeon (think it was 82/83 and WOW..... what a night!!
Life can be sweet and life can be sour......Sweet n' Sour...But this is pure Magic...OMG.....What a arrangement.......Thank you for this post............
Gave u a thumbs up but this is not fusion. This is Jazz period on the R&B side. Jazz/Fusion would be groups like Return to Forever, Weather Report, Jean Luc Ponty, etc.
The songs/tracks from this album introduced me to this in group in 1977 and thanks to one Benson Idonije, an on-air personalty at a local Radio Station in Lagos Nigeria and had stuck to the group till now. RIP to the departed members of the group
Love the crusaders built up vamps and grooves and the composition and musical runs Joe sample tore them keys up,love the pocket groove and the sharp horn arrangements this is a powerful display of musicality,
Its an injustice to single these cats out this group was truly amazing i was fd up when they broke apart and i had to find out at a live show i was looking forward to seeing them once again in chicago when i found out but popwell henderson hooper felder sample and carlton man in fucking credible period.
@JColeM7785 According to wiki ---The group shortened their name to "The Crusaders" in 1971, and adopted a jazz-funk style. They also incorporated the electric bass and electric guitar into their music. Bass guitarist Robert "Pops" Popwell and guitarist Larry Carlton joined the band, and featured on the group's albums throughout most of the 1970s. --- this album was released in 1977, I'm positive Larry Carlton played on this track since I used to own the vinyl of this album
@@gregoryphillips760 . I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. When I went to a crusaders concert. I always got a ticket on the left hand side. Because I knew Wilton came out on it. RIP TEXAS TWISTER.
This cut plays like the opening and closing theme song of that black superhero movie that plays in my head. I knew about The Crusaders from Street Life. Then, it went from there. A class of their own, RIP Wilton Elder, Wayne Henderson, Joe Sample, and Pops Popwell. Love & life Sticks Hooper and Larry Carlton
Adding to the high praise in other comments, I consider this one of the best albums ever in this genre. This is a dynamite track, but just one of several on the recording.
Sho nuff classic from back in the day. I'm talkin' back yard bbq's, house parties, down at the shore summer vacation classic music that made you feel good and dance the night away with your friends and whoever your special boo was.

So you want 'happy?' Listen to this song, especially Larry Carlton's solos in the 2nd half. I think this was when he first joined the Crusaders. Now, THIS is happy!
***** - Thanks; I didn't know that. I ran across a solo version of him playing 'The Lord's Prayer' on an acoustic guitar... And yes, they are fleeting!
Fahim Sharad Actually Larry Carlton first album with the group was " Those Southern Knights" Prior to his joining Roland Bautista was featured with a little David T. Walker.
I've been listening to this album since 1976. Still love it and always will

Was this Larry Carlton on this song or Dean Parks?
I didn't know he was on Aja with Steely Dan. I thought it was all Walter Becker. Thanks.
I'm nearly 40 & I've only just started digging these guys. What a treat!
Check out Donald Byrd & the Blackbirds, Roy Ayers and Joe McBride. You will dig them too !

Pure honesty in music. Not a fake or lying note from start to finish. Where have all the flowers gone?
