I watched this yesterday and can not describe how much it touched my soul and beliefs, although I am of a completely different faith and upbringing. You feel for every character and what I loved most was that there is no negative character. You even feel for Moishe. I cried especially in the last episode where Yanky and Esty talk in the hotel - the raw drama of two people, who are not indifferent to each, who really do feel for each other, but are so different in how they see their paths. You almost feel that Yanky is ready to give up his world for her but you understand that in his tears are despair and sorrow for both his beliefs, love for his wife - he knows that he will not survive without his world.

Am Jiddischen (eine Variante des Deutschen) merkt man mal wieder wie wertvoll Sprache ist, und, dass man sie erhalten sollte!
Yiddish is based on Medieval High German. It is not a "variant". In fact Yiddish was spoken long before Hochdaych was created (although it has the same roots). I think Yiddish is much more like Swiss or Austrian. Dos iz Yiddish = A gutn tog, un gei in gezunterheyt ;)
@@Lagolop If you know what variant in German means, you might know that Swiss German, Austrian German and Luxembourgish is also a German language variant. I was not talking about modern High German.

For Germans on here perhaps not familiar with Judaism: I am an Orthodox Jew from New York (not from Esther's community though, lot less stringent). Ask me anything. My father is actually from Austria and speaks Yiddish and German as his first languages.
How did you feel about the portrayal of the Jewish community, particularly in regard to the treatment of women seen? And does that reflect the majority of Orthodox Jewish patterns in the treatment of women?
@@eric_e95 I haven't watched this series yet as I'm catching up on some essential studying etc during quarantine. But I know the general idea of the genre of 'ex Hassidic' film, and I grew up in a Hassidic neighborhood until 3rd grade and my father still works there so I'm frankly pretty familiar with the community even if not directly a part.
I would assume that the depiction is accurate for the community they're representing. Again I haven't seen the specifics so some may be over exaggerated, but Hassidic women typically do not "date" but rather go on 1-3 pre martial meetings with a guy their parents pick out to see if it's an agreeable match (so there may be some variation in how much say the woman has, but it's not like casual dating by any stretch - though this is true for Hassidic men too), get married 17-19, and are expected to have many children (I've seen Deborah Feldman say 10-20 which is a big exaggeration from what I'm aware of; I think something like 8 would be an average, with 6 being the lower end and like 10-12 the higher end).
Women also are ironically often more educated than their spouses and not infrequently the sole or primary breadwinner since their husbands to a considerable degree are in "kollel" (religious seminary) most of the day, and secular education for Hassidic men mostly stops in 8th grade whereas women tend to at least learn English better and do jobs like secretaries, accountants, etc. But because they have a ton of kids and are expected to be home to raise them to a considerable degree, I'm not fully sure about the percentages of working vs non working Hassidic women. Regardless, they don't really have much freedom outside that role.
I will say, however, that I'm not so convinced that most Hassidic women necessarily feel oppressed and limited - same for Hassidic men. Ultimately anyone who is a free thinker / spirit' that wants to do any of an array of things outside that strict regiment will definitely find the lifestyle incredibly stifling, which is why ex Hassidics practically all relate to their backgrounds in the painful ways they do. But from what I see it seems a lot of them are content with it, and it's not like there isn't some under the wraps deviation from community stringency, especially among men (smoking, drinking, drugs, even prostitution - def happens, but I'd say cigarettes and drinking specifically isn't even shunned much and now things like top smartphones are becoming more popular).
As for the rest of the Orthodox community, no it's definitely not close to the level of Hassidic Jews. There is one group of Hassidic Jews, Chabad, who are basically much more "chill" Hassidic Jews and are typically viewed by the Jewish community as a distinct group altogether. They have issues with inadequate secular education and more strict observance than others, but they speak English as a first language, almost all have internet and smart phones, are way less toxically suppressive of their youth in terms of those who stray a bit or do things like chill with the opposite gender, have outreach to all other types of Jews, etc. I'd say while their dating tends to be young and marriage focused, it isn't insanely young like 17-18, and it's unaccompanied by parents and consists of a few genuine dates even if no physical touching occurs.
There are also ultra Orthodox Lithuanian-background Jews known as "Litvaks" (Yiddish for "Lithuanian"), or referred to informally as "yeshivish" (based on the Yeshiva academies, or Jewish religious seminaries, the Lithuanian Jewish community was known for). These Jews typically wear white shirts and hats/jackets for prayers, but among the modern generation they speak English rather than Yiddish as a first language, for the most part have 'adequate' secular education (for example here in New York they almost all take state level formal exams), their dating is more similar to Chabad I mentioned above, but beyond that they're kind of stringency wise in between Chabad and Hassidic but there's a tonnn of variation on an individual level. Also college education, while not formally endorsed by the community, is much more common - they tend to go to all men's night college programs, though - and very career based, you won't see any majoring in political science or philosophy, for example.
The rest of Orthodox as basically: regular Orthodox (people like me who don't really identify with any specific label beyond being observant); Modern Orthodox (basically a movement spearheaded in the American context by Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik and whose principles are essentially "being 100% traditional and observant while being part of the modern world") - typically these Jews are very well educated, go to college, marry 23-26, and more or less have a more free and non judgemental upbringing within confines of Jewish Law -- levels of observance vary, with some being meticulously observant of law and others hardly knowing anything in Judaism beyond conventional practice and basically having experienced eating all kinds of food, sex , etc (not at all something endorsed by the community, just in my experience neighborhoods identifying as modern orthodox typically have higher rates of that).
I'd probably say that unless an Orthodox Jewish woman was secretly a total non believer and/or a lesbian or something like that, most outside the Hasidic + more stringent wings of the Yeshivish and Chabad communities will probably not feel oppressed.

Do you speak Yiddish and if you do, how well do you understand modern German through that? E.g. German that is spoken in the show? Im asking because the other way round as a native speaker of German Yiddish sounds like an old, very strong dialect of German which is actually fairly comprehensible. thanx in advance!

Ela it is absolutely not a documentary and doesn’t claim to be one. The directors and producers say this as well. There are specific details and facts that are simply not factual, no matter what anyone’s experience is.
I am glad this story was told, it needed to be revealed what it is like to live in an oppressive level of orthodox judaisim if one can't handle that level. There is no shame to admit that, the shame is to hide one's feelings and views.

The "Shaving" of all hair is almost never done! A woman 's hair must be no shorter than 1 handbreadth in length.By most of our Chasidic groups the women buy very expensive wigs which often make them lovlier than ever before. The idea is that the woman's real hair is Holy since the day of marriage,why would she shave it off? In Israel we have seen 3 very realistic films of Jewish men and women which are 100% authentic. This film is not representative of 99% or more of how we live. I am willing to discuss this intelligently with anyone who would like,on consideration that we both respect the other.

I read the book, i saw many interviews with Debora Feldman and i love it. Then i decided to watch the Netflix Unorthodox and i have to say i was very disappointed. Book is much better.
Books are always better. There is nothing more colorful than your own imagination.

I'm actually from the community. I'll tell you this the only real and accurate and true and very sad part was Moishe Lefkewitz. But the rest wasn't put down accurate most of the community isn't so bad and I think it just came from hate. thank you

I agree. It is only a select part of the satmar community that acts this way. its hard to blame them, this is their belief. this movie is a real shame to them. though I feel that they bought it upon themselves. By setting so much rules and standards, it can feel like a prison for some. The tighter you tug the rubberband, the farther it will fly. I think that a little flexibility could have gone a long way, and may could have even stopped this movie from existing.

Ich konnte die zu 80% verstehen ohne die Untertitel zu lesen 📖
Höre mal Deutsch-Türken beim Telefonieren zu. Sie mischen das Türkische mit so vielen deutschen Wörtern, dass man am Ende auch oft versteht worum es geht. Das ist Sprache. Sie passt sich immer der Umgebung an und bleibt niemals stehen.
Jiddisch ist im Prinzip das Deutsch des Mittelalters normalerweise gemischt mit hebräischen Worten. Ich glaube Jiddisch war/ist die Alltagssprache/Hebräisch eher die religiöse Sprache.
Und unser heutiges Deutsch hat viele Worte aus der jüdischen Kultur.
Immerhin haben Juden seit 1000 Jahren in Deutschland gelebt, man hat in Speyer ein uraltes rituellen jüdisches Bad ausgegraben.
Die Sprachen haben sich gegenseitig beeinflusst.
@@mariascheu4531 genau....weil die deutsche Sprache der Herkunft nach hebräisch ist meinst Du?? Solch einen Mist habe ich noch nie gehört und gelesen. Kurze Info zu den Juden in Deutschland. Die ersten kamen mit den Römern nach Deutschland, ausschließlich in deren Schlepptau als Händler und sind nach deren Untergang auch wieder verschwunden. Der größte Teil Juden, welche im Mittelalter nach Deutschland kamen, waren ausschließlich orthodoxe Juden aus dem gesamten östlichen Ländern wie Russland, Polen, Litauen, Ukraine usw. usw. Diese Juden hatten als Sprache. Hebräisch für religiöse Handlungen und ihre Alltagssprache, das Jiddendeutsch. Das ist eine Mischung aus Hebräisch und Deutsch. Da Juden in den Ostgebieten extrem abgeschottet und unter sich gelebt haben in ihren Stadtteilen und Dörfern=Schetl (wegen der teilweise gewälttätigen Diskriminierung der ansässigen Bevölkerung) hat bei den Ostjuden auch die ehem. Ursprache der Ostgebiete überlebt. Die deutsche Sprache. So entstand das Jiddisch. Und jetzt können wir auch gerne über die angebliche slawische Sprache uns unterhalten, die von den Galgolithen erfunden worden ist.
