As a Mental Health Therapist and someone that loves photography, I just have to say that was terrible. The mixed message of "bullying" and then being bullied in the photoshoot is appalling. I get the "empowerment" vibe they were going for but in therapy, we call this "flooding" and that can be very dangerous to expose someone to those traumas without the therapy component. Then for the girl that was sent home.......I just can't even say how damaging that was to be said to her in front of everyone....
Great comment!
I agree. So so toxic.
Not only that, but it was ON TV
One thing is facing your fears, insecurities, and bullying traumas, but revealing those to the entire world? Imagine that
The whole thing was horrible, but the part were you paint the words is not such a bad thing,
but not like that 😅
@@Sabrina-sc1db right!?
Jay put “Band geek” on his t-shirt like Emma put Ginger on her born this way shirt on Glee instead of OCD- like that’s not what you were teased for and I KNOW for a fact, you’re telling me Jay- was an adopted mixed-race little gay boy from South Africa… and being a BAND GEEK in high school is what you got bullied about?? I call cap sir
That's what I thought lol. Could he not use this opportunity to bring awareness to bullying of kids in the LGBT community or of mixed race descent? I bet he wanted to do something about that, but the producers probably wouldn't allow it.
I literally cam here to say this!
I think this could have been one of the shoots he didn’t agree with either and he too didn’t feel comfortable using words that truly hurt him. He’s said on his live streams that there was a lot of tension and disagreements behind the scenes
How is band geek a bully word?
Also Mercedes having "no weave" like, really?
You just misunderstood: the photoshoot was about TEEN bullying. What the judges did was ADULT bullying. Totally different.
Bullying is bullying
@@minakoaino7043 They were joking

Judges: we hope you don't lose work for being too skinny
Also judges: eliminate her for being too skinny 🤡
Right, like 🤦🏻♀️
And this was the same season a super skinny and tall girl won the cycle, so they are sending the mixed messages.
@@PrincessKLS is it 12 season?
@@user-kc9rz4wb9u no this is season 15
@@PrincessKLS Ann was 6,2 and slim.. Nigel said it , there is a difference if you are very tall and naturally slim .. and I think what Tyra meant that Anna Maria could have a slim figure if she eat healthy and work out and look then more naturally slim ..
She said “I’m trying to get lean” so she very obviously has/had an eating disorder with body dysmorphia. This should have been enough for a serious production to take her out of the show PRIVATELY while giving her the psychological support she desperately needed. WTF is this shameful display?
Right it's exploitation and it's disgusting
Yeah-that phrase really made me so sad and scared for her. Just hearing someone say with such conviction that she needs to get more lean, when you can see her bones, hurt my heart. I’m so glad to her that she is now recovered.
So true wich makes the harsh words of the judges even worse.
It was definitely exploitation, as they shouldn't have brought her to the show in the first place.
People really need to stop diagnosing people with serious mental illnesses over the internet
The judges talking about Esther’s bra size made me so uncomfortable, like don’t comment on people’s bodies. Also, how they treated Anamarie was VILE.
Really, leave her alone. She can't control her breast size.
As for Anamarie, that was just cruel. If she's struggling, approach her in private and use encouraging words, not insulting ones.
They’re models 🤷🏾♀️ don’t be in a industry based on looks if you can’t take the criticism
I have big boobs for my size and throughout my life many people have felt free to ask me my bra size or tell me they are big. Like why do people think that's ok
@@Latte-girly90 that wasn’t criticism. That was just straight up bullying
Yeah, that was actually very unprofessional.
Everything about this show is irresponsible. We just didn’t realize it back then because it was so normalized.
I know! I don’t know how I ever used to watch this show!
I always thought this show was stupid. Ive been a professional photographer for 16 years. My friend would tell me "oh my gaaawwddd you should watch the photo shoots! Theyre so cool." I watched once and never again. A lot of the photographers on AMNM are idiots and a lot of the shots look like a 12 year old took them.
never watched it because it made uncomfortable and watching back i now know why
Or cause we were young
Because reality shows are all about drama, I'm surprised that these days people are not aware of it.
That conversation they had with one of the models and her body was honestly awful. They don't know if she is unhealthy unless a doctor has said that. Looks don't correspond to good health usually, and to hold her own body against her without any information about her health and to do so publicly (and even potentially triggering a relapse if she had an ED) was so irresponsible. If they really cared, they would have had her go to a doctor and/or set her aside to talk to her without the cameras, as you mentioned. That was horrible
They did not have to do that infront of cameras. If they were really concerned they would of done it behind scenes. They put her in just to get some drama
@@jackieelizabeth8614 woah kinda pissed me off
Or they could have called in an ED therapist/psychologist for her to talk with so they could get a better idea of if she's just naturally thin, or if she is struggling with an ED.
It appears that good intentioned people get stuck in a paradox where body positivity ends up not counting if the person is just simply thin.
@@revivedcorpseofrasputin4337 I genuinely think she did have an ED. Her responses were red flags but how Tyra handled it was extremely dangerous and irresponsible. She needed medical help (if she had an ED) and all they did was crush her dreams.
Also note how Tyra focused on not getting jobs as if appearence was the most important consequemce of an ED. I f she really wanted to help, a private 1 on 1 about health and concern would have been the proper course of actions. Speaking in front of a crowd and later using footage for tv could have brought serious harm to her.
I GENUINELY hope Annamaria is safe.
As a counselor who has treated eating disorders, the way they treated that contestant was reckless. This contestant should have been screened out before ever appearing on this show. She shouldn't have her eating issues exploited for reality television. This is a private issue and should have been dealt with accordingly. Very disturbing. Very sad.
They probably chose her to make her a example to other teens that starving yourself or if they had a eating disorder, isn’t healthy. It seems like they made this episode to basically single her out and make this is thing. Explains why it was done on camera.its unprofessional to have done that regardless of the reason. Not everyone is mentally prepared to deal with a trama, most are just happy to just get past it and move on.
Exactly, that’s what got me as well, I thought the show had psychological screening/monitoring at least of some sort. It’s so bad.
Even if she’s an example, she never consented to being one. She was publicly humiliated
@@sunshinefalls but then the industry contradicts that by making everyone believe to be beautiful you have to be skinny...I think that's changing a bit nowadays but especially back then it was damn near impossible to find plus size people on any type of show like this or in photos~ (Unless they were "before" shots of diet pills
The model said she's not suffering from any body image issues. She said she has confidence when she looks in the mirror.
Everyone's talking about the girl who's being critiqued on her body, but I'm really upset about the handling of the girl who had "queer" written on her. By now of course a ton of LGBTQ people, including me, have found "queer" to be an empowering word but at the time..... Writing a slur all over her that people had traumatized her with??? such a bad move
I was thinking the same. There’s a difference between a ‘bully word’ and an actual slur/hate speech xxx
@@dollface2917 Ikr? "Queer" is clearly a word that legitimately traumatized her and that she still isn't okay with, so putting that all over her body really wasn't a good move.
Hearing her talking about it made me cry
I can’t remember where I read this, but in an interview she said she wanted to use dy*ke but they didn’t let her. Folks have to remember that queer for the longest time, and still to many people, was a slur and really only has recently started to be reclaimed
She chose the word. Giving the ANTM judges any insight in to what your scared of or sensitive about is just super dumb!!!!
The concept of this photoshoot is SO irresponsible. It’s like they were hoping some of the girls would get triggered so Tyra could “calm them down” and get good content that ONLY flattered Tyra. GOD I CANNOT stand this woman
that's how 'reality' shows are. they set people up to be in that situation for 'drama' and 'good tv'. Trisha paytas talked about it I think? Even in America's got talent, they set talents up for failure, to be a laughing stock. Everything is 'planned' more or less, even dr phil. If this model is too skinny, why cast her in the 1st place? To have this exact moment right there and have this awful dramatic 'tv-worthy' conversation. We used to watch american idol back then. Then there is this contestant that got into top 12 or sth and he was always grilled by the judges. And my mom would say, why pick him in the 1st place? Amongst the thousands of better auditioners ya'll precisely picked him? Ya.. exactly for that reason, drama, someone to criticise, for 'good tv'.
Yeah you could tell the model who had to write queer was just trying to pretend like it helped but she seemed really bothered. (Interesting now tho that queer is taken back alot by the community and used as a good general term for lgbt+ people and not as offensive from what I've seen)
@@lucaleone4331 its still offensive to a lot of us. usually people have to give permission to be referred to as queer (unless its in academic terms like "queer theory" or "queer history" etc., though even i have problems with that lmao)
@@coatimundi69 I mean I wouldn't doubt it. But the spaces I usually occupy. Which is book tube and novels. We use queer all the time to describe books with lgbtq+ representation.
@@lucaleone4331 yeah i know theres a lot of people who do use it and i think thats good for them :) i just like to remind people that the word is still a slur even if many people reclaimed it (you cant reclaim it without it being a slur...) and a lot of people still have not so its probably bad to use willy nilly. usually if its being used respectfully its more of a mild annoyance but yk. always forced to remind people of this around me lol
This is irrelevant but I hate how today Jay loves pin all the blame on Tyra when he was apart of the toxic environment just as much as she was. He’s a twisted snake and enjoyed belittling, humiliating, and shaming the girls for the sake of drama as seen in this clip. The fact that he’s trying to manipulate people into emphasizing with him like he’s this innocent angel is disgusting. Hold him accountable as well.
I have no sympathy for Jay at all. There’s so many scenes of him saying horrible things to the girls. I can’t believe he’s trying to wipe his hands now.
I would like to ask Jay, that was Tyra wishpering in his ears, when he was saying mean things? Because if not, that's on him.
I really don’t like how Tyra said that Anamaria's body/weight made her uncomfortable. That shouldn’t be the focus if you’re concerned for someone and approaching the topic of their weight/health. Also this should have been done in private
Agree better alone and not fount of other people who can judge you
But then where would the drama be, and we all know this shows are not just about fashion, bbut all the drama is actually their agenda..they pick girls they have something that isolates them and makes the story, they make silly makeovers that change them so drasticlly, even sometimes to look worse than ever.. And its a product for people who actually enjoy that type of content.. Shaming people, llaughing to people and putting them in uncomfortable situations
💯💯💯
Exactly, who the hell cares if it makes her uncomfortable, it just portraits how little she cares about someone else's safety versus her own likings
Exactly, also where is Twiggy? ... I mean this girl is not as thin as Twiggy was(not that I agree with heroin chic, but she literally can't be too thin when Twiggy existed.)
"But words won't hurt me" they say during the challenge meant to raise awareness about teen bullying and how it contributes to teen suicide rates. That Sticks and Stones mentality is absolute garbage and is why a lot of people aren't held accountable for the genuine damage their words can cause, either because people don't take the victims seriously or because the victims themselves feel like their pain isn't valid.
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will break my spirit.
And lots of people are in emotionally abusive relationships but feel like it's not real abuse if I'm not getting punched. Though people who actually are physically abused often say the emotional abuse was the most hurtful.
It's classic gaslighting. That's how I see it.
I'm a 61 male who was bullied throughout school because I was overweight. I remember these words being said to me by a close family member but the words hurt they get in your head and you can't just forget them or ignore them. You believe your bullies are correct and you are worthless.
I would have rather been physically attacked than be hurt with the words. Words 100% messed me up more.
i hate when ppl say “words could never hurt me” idk about yall, but words can fricken hurt a lot sometimes
Thank you. That's what i say all the time. :)
Depends who it's coming from.
i can understand when people are using that mindset to help cope with and process some hurtful actions directed at themselves, but when they direct that attitude at other people, especially with an air of superiority/condescension ? infuriating. verbal abuse leaves very real wounds and dismissing that reality is hurting survivors. it's not a healthy environment to heal in
life & death are in the power of the tongue
especially from loved ones or your frriends/"friends" :')
“Bullying is awful!”
Also:
“You are too skinny, you look unhealthy!”
(Why did they even cast her if it was an issue?)
Because they wanted the storyline. ANTM is so transparent about stuff like that.
Also could’ve developed/evolved during her time on the show
Fr it's not like they didn't see her body during casting, they have everyone wear a bikini
@Ryan exactly. Tyra loves controversy. Remember her literally audience-less episode of the Tyra Show so she could confront Naomi about a one-sided feud? Lmao
First thought, that they knew when casting. Probably picked her to push a reverse on super skinny, the modeling has projected in the past. Trying to message their "progress."
Anamaria right now, she is fine, she is recovered and look amazing!!!
good te hear that ☺
What's her insta?
@@carebear6036 its @aana
Omg I looked it up and she looks so much healthier! She still have those nice abs too.💞
Maybe this experience actually helped her want to get better ?
"Eat some avocado and toast" is the model equivalent to "Go eat a cheeseburger" As someone that struggles with keeping weight on, that part was so triggering.
I agree. It's very upsetting to me
Tyra has also used the cheeseburger line.
I got told I need to eat a cookie or something a lot. I relate to all of these replies so much.
Heck...I struggle with being overweight, and that line still pissed me off
It is very upsetting, even though I don't have that struggle anymore. It hurt so much to be mocked and told to eat a burger.
They really said “I don’t like the photograph. I don’t like the muscle” on the girl who was called manly looking by her bullies
“If you’re not healthy, you lose your beauty.”
Me, with poor health, disabled: oh.
Same.
It is an industrie. They sell things with the help of a beauty standard. Standard! Means, there are sizes, hights, lows, lenghts...Data...that has to be like protocoll. It has nothing to do with beauty in the eye of the individual. It's about an idealized perfection they need to install again and again so they can sell products....to women that are extremley insecure, because of this standard (ironic, right?). Has nothing to do with the real world.
@@Jezzebel1313 there are disabled models but go off
@@jmaldo92 I was born to disabled parents. So of course I noticed. And I also notice every time these people speak of "integration" in their strange, exaggerated way. And I also feel the amount of "freak show" feeling in the back of their minds of their paying audience. Do you know that parts of this industry that target people who cannot pay $ 10,000 for a t-shirt do not typically use disabled models? Because there is still too much risk in this segment. But, after so much spectacularly presented acceptance and self-adulation when another model like that was on the catwalk or shone through Vogue or Cosmopolitan, the haute couture family has a better feeling again ... a better feeling of inner purity when they have one Wearing a $ 100,000 coat made of 20 white foxes or a dress sewn by children for 0.50 cents an hour.
@@Jezzebel1313 oh Lord. Short and sweet next time please lol
Sooo the conversation they had was completely irresponsible, as someone who recovered from an ED, publicly shaming someone is not how you handle that conversation.
Apparently (in Jay’s chat, and some other models) they casted this lovely young woman about a month before the first episode (to give girls time to get paperwork etc) and this lovely woman came back for shooting 10-15 lbs lighter, and on her very slim body it was a bit alarming.
I think because there were other girls who had ED’s on the show that production knew about, and did nothing about (like in season 3) they got a lot of backlash so they went way to hard on this poor girl.
I really don’t know the circumstances, just what a lot of people who have allegedly said, and this is honestly just speculation, I don’t think that this came from a malicious place, but all of that criticism was mishandled
*cast
Completely agree. So ironic to due anti bullying as a theme and then do this. Its even harmful to the viewers of the show, like omg, I watched this show as a little girl.
I agree I thought that conversation was so inappropriate. That could of triggered her. I had an ed too and people would say stuff like that to me and it was a huge trigger. I feel so bad for that poor girl and to call her out in front of everyone so uncalled for.
@@beth3473 *could have
@@JoseManuel-dh6iy thank you for correcting me. I have dyslexia and I sometimes I have trouble with writing. I appreciate it so much. Thank you again.
As someone who has struggled with disordered eating in the past, I think that outing her on national television was completely inappropriate. If they actually wanted to address the issue they should have gotten a medical professional to address the issue off camera in a comfortable setting.
Exactly. I feel they wanted to make an example out of her and seem to even be blaming her. Also, whether she gets booked because of her body or not is the least of her problems: if she does, indeed, suffer from some eating problem, she may be in dire danger and needs help.
I agree. I can't believe this show hasnt gotten canceled by now. The people on here have seriously crossed the line on multiple occasions through bullying, making inappropriate comments, and forcing the models into positions they aren't comfortable with. I feel bad for the girls who go on the show just wanting to further their careers and then they get treated like that by a large group of people and nobody is advocating for them. Such a toxic environment.
I looked Anamaria up after this and I found: "In the promotional photos, Anamaria's legs were completely photoshopped out, and replaced with Jane's legs. This is most likely due to her legs being too thin to market."
That is so horrible how they treated her. She seems to be doing okay now though and apparently got into photography after leaving the show!
She looks SOO much better now. Anamaria ended up winning too despite the fact that they liked her body enough to let her into the competition, then dissed her body in this episode.
@@iBeFloe They don't go from filming castings straight to filming the competition. She wasn't as thin during casting week and some time passed and they started filming, she showed looking like she did on this video.

What did you do after that s**t is over?
The way the model talked about what she sees in the mirror, and needing to “get lean” is definitely concerning and is a sign of body dysmorphia and could be related to an eating disorder. But having those conversations on camera, being led by reality show judges, is beyond irresponsible.
Exactly what I was thinking.
They don't care. It's adding drama which brings in more views. These people are greedy. They do not care at all about anyone.
The critique that "I don't see model, I see athlete but gorgeous" is so hilarious in light of recent comments.
After Victoria's Secret's decision to use regular women and athletes, Tyra was all about how great it was and took credit for opening the door for that decision to be made but right there you can see how she really feels about athletes being models
this happened more than ten years ago, the industry was way more narrow minded back then, and body types defined markets.
reminds me of when ru paul was super transphobic and said he wouldn’t let a trans man compete because they had an ‘unfair advantage’ but is now praised because in a newer season he *gasp* finally let a trans person on the show.
@@purplemonkey9575 That's fine but then can't take credit for opening the door for that decision when she reinforced the narrow minded industry standards on her show that's the opposite of paving the way 😂
I know this isn't the main focus, but I'm totally on the fence about the VS decision. Like, I'm glad they're ditching the rail-thin models and are showing more varied body types, but this happens too frequently lately -- average, normal, or larger bodies are shown and thin bodies are inadvertently shunned and ignored. Skinny people exist, too. And while I don't care and I don't base my entire self worth off of an ad campaign, it's just frustrating to see it happen over and over again, that people think that skinny bodies don't deserve to be shown but others body types do.
I know this isn't the point, but yeah, don't jump on me.
@@sluttymctits4496 C'mon now, thin, tall girls are still the standard specially for couture. Most fashion brands still only use skinny white girls for their runway shows. I do think skinny-shaming is a real thing and it can be very tricky issue to acknowledge since it's usually masked as body positivity on social media, still it doesn't come close to what plus size, or even normal size girls go through.
I feel like this is one of the worst bullying episodes because it was so much more subtle than normal. They got the models to open up then used their words against them. They spouted caring words during judging when they're usually so harsh that there's no way their "niceness" could be believed. And then the heavy bullying Tara did at the end was horrifying.
But she said it in a nice voice. That's all it takes not to be a bully it seems, according to Tyra's behavior.
@@hollyperret Hah!
"This word did not define who I became as an adult."
Ah yes, from bullied to bully 😌
Here’s an even better idea…have all the contestants take turns writing their favorite thing about you on your body. That way, even if you get eliminated, you’ll have a photo of yourself that represents all the things the other girls love about you🥰
I mean…I don’t think she got that skinny all of a sudden. Why did they pick her in the first place if her body was an issue to them? They used her only to make it look like they care for certain topics, and they even did it wrong
That's such a good point
I was just thinking this! And even if she lost weight after the casting and they were concerned they should’ve approached it in a different way
I did a little research and I'm not sure if this is 100% accurate but somebody had said that she was always 130 lb at 5'10" .. but in between casting and actually starting to show, she had dropped 20 more pounds and went down to 110 lb. ( hence her statement, I'm trying to get lean). Like I said I don't know the accuracy of my statement but that is what I read.
@@michp7 If that's true then getting cast on the show might've triggered something for her. She should've had another psych eval and been given support, not shamed.
@@sighcantthinkofaname I agree with you completely. And I also I'm not justifying the show because I think they were major scumbags to pretty much everybody on the show. I was just relaying the information that I had read. But yes I completely agree with you
As someone who struggles with body image, that would send me into a spiral of either overeating or not eating at all. So not okay to bring up in that setting. Hope all the women are doing well and are happy.
speaking as a person recovering from anorexia nervosa: this just promotes the idea that eating disorders are body types and not the serious, deadly illness that they are. you can die from an eating disorder at ANY WEIGHT. at the end of the day her health and weight are for her and her doctor to worry about. this was just gross to watch.
Thanks for this. I recovered from anorexia Nervosa and I never got below 125. Everyone said I looked great. I still struggle to eat normal and I'm fat now. If you go back to your old ways people always say how" healthy" you look when really that's the time you're least healthy
Wow.. Yep, so she can go home 'to deal with it privately with her doctor' just as per your request, what are you upset about then? 😂 Nobody needs to see that on TV.
Judges: We want to empower you, to shed the words of people that hurt you.
Also Judges: There is something wrong with your body. Goodbye.
As problematic as this episode was, Kayla’s story made me tear up as someone who was also teased for my queerness. The power word being “free” was amazing
That's why they did this crap. It's why they manipulated her to cry, for people like you. Sucka 😂
They bullied girls mercilessly for being too big, and they're bullying her body for being too thin. Telling her those things on national television is just going to make her dig her heels in. Here's the thing, heroin chic was a thing, and I doubt models who are "too thin" will miss out on much work
She would definetely not miss out on work because of her body, wether she's healthy or not. They have told a (slim) model before to "tone up" right before eliminating her. They constantly flipflop and the models can never win no matter what. I wouldn't comment on her body, if they are concerned they should have talked to her in private and offered support and resources.
Booking the models and then telling them “I don’t like your body type” is such a horrible thing to do
It’s reality!
The irony is that in the recap episode of this season, the models are complaining that Anamaria is irresponsible for EATING TOO MUCH OUT OF THE FRIDGE AND NOT CLOSING THE LIDS BACK.
well, that's actually pretty common with restrictive ed's (if she has/had one) when you deprive yourself of nutrients your body retaliates and leads you to binge, so they were likely talking abt a binge episodes if she does have an ed.
But why even get her in the show if they already knew she looked “too skinny” for them? Like where they hoping she gained weight throughout the weeks on the show? Was that gonna be her improvement 🙄
But why even get her in the show if they already knew she looked “too skinny” for them? Like where they hoping she gained weight throughout the weeks on the show? Was that gonna be her improvement 🙄
The AUDACITY of these judges
They need to take several seats. They say, positivity and strength but they’re the biggest bullies ever and STILL bullied them in this shoot..
💯! Practically every comment of each ANTM episode that these judges spew out of their mouths are contradictory and full of disdain.. they LOVE to aim for the final kill! As if *personally* attacking the contestants is their only way to give "constructive criticism". Just vile people
I have struggled with anorexia. It started in the 8th grade, when I was 13. I'm 18 now and I still have times when I have to truly force myself to eat something. This was so wrong in so many ways. This is not the way to handle it. Not even close.
Telling somebody with a restrictive eating disorder that they look ill and too thin is probably the worst thing you can do to them. Tyra, as somebody who works an an industry KNOWN for enforcing restrictive diets and leading to horrible eating habits, should know better than that.
I like the idea of turning a bullying word into a power word. It’s just that, with ANTM, it’s not working…
It doesn't work when the word is picked for you either.
I was bullied from K-8th grade by the same group of girls. It was horrible. It got to a point where I just had to ask if they were obsessed with me. Like who bullies someone for that long??
I don't wanna be insensitive but... what did they say when you asked?
Is it bad?
@@AlletaLady they were just dumbfounded I even approached them to ask them that, since I never really reacted to anything they’ve done or said. I think they were just too embarrassed to respond. It was lovely lol.
I was bullied for 14 years, I feel you
'why are you crying'
**she says while encouraging the girls to relive the horrible bullying that they've experienced**
"why are you crying?" I don't know Tyra, maybe it's the fact that she's being forced to relive her trauma on TV.
So they spend 24+ seasons reinforcing impossible beauty standards by judging and criticizing beautiful women, then throw in a photoshoot about how young people are tormented for not meeting those standards. Oh and then bully them in the middle of that photoshoot. 🙃
It's especially laughable since Janice used to be a judge on antm. Back when she on antm she was horrible to the models. Calling them harsh names instead of actually being constructive. She shamed a plus size model for her weight and all Tyra did was preach "ppl like u are why EDs exist" only to handle every model who had an ED or signs on their show horribly. She's such a hypocrite
It's funny how bad it is
The thing that bugs me is that if they felt like she was too skinny why didn’t they try and help her? Instead of publicly shaming her maybe they should get her some therapy or something? And the fact that she was actually suffering from an eating disorder makes it so much worse.
I guess when you go on shows like this you need to recognise that it is a show, it needs to be entertaining and anything that is remotely taboo could be discovered and used in the show. They all sign disclaimers saying this before it starts.
they aren't responsible for her therapy. Every addict has to WANT change. She was openly saying she LIKED what she saw and she was trying to get leaner. You cant force rehab on somebody who doesn't want it; it will likely cause resentment and aversion to recovery in the future. What addicts need are consequences for their actions so they see that they lose more by allowing themselves to stay sick. Any professional working in ED or Drug rehabs will tell you this. And Ive been through both of these issues, Its been true over and over
The fact that if the judges really cared they could have come up with their "constructive criticism" privately.
My bullying word would’ve been “retard” (although I don’t like using that word because of the historically degrading context from which it stems) I got that a lot because I was in special Ed growing up (I have autism). My empowerment word would have been unique or original.
Thanks for sharing. I have learning disabilities and I was made fun of and called stupid all the way through college and sometimes at my jobs even as an adult. You are strong for finding your own way to define yourself and be proud of your differences.
I have been on both sides of the “weight spectrum” and I can confidently say that being called “too skinny” is the same damn thing as being called “too fat”!!! I was at 190lbs after I had my first child and I’m only 5’2. I then lost down to 109lbs and wearing a 00 in jeans!!! It’s just as hurtful. Being told that makes you feel defeated, like you’re not enough no matter what you do. Ppl gotta learn to LOVE!!! Someone is always going to have SOMETHING bad/negative to say, but don’t let that person be you. Don’t be the person that says something that will run through the mind of the one that’s hurt all damn night long… BE KIND!!! BE BETTER!!! Love and let love!!! It’s truly not that hard!!!
Totally agree with you on this ..I can relate
Some of the girls were super nervous because I believe this was the first photoshoot of this season
@loveutill theendoftimes more so on the first one, they do get more comfortable as it goes on
It was the first
I agree that the girl did look unhealthy but yeah it didn’t need to be brought to light in a “shaming” type way and in front of all the girls. Probably would have been more appropriate as a one on one conversation off camera between her and a producer or health care professional. And ultimately in the end she said she likes her body so... It’s her prerogative to look however she wants.
Edit to add that in the end she is used by the judges as a tool to “send a message” as opposed to being treated like a human being.
Ouch, Anamaria loves her body imo kinda concerning to me i hope she ok nowadays.
If I recall correctly, when this season was filmed, it was at the beginning of the movement of requiring models to be in a healthy weight. However, ANTM wanted to jump in that bandwagon and handle this poorly.
CarboneCat ahh that makes sense, I remember that
I don't think she really liked her body she seemed to have dysphoria and saw herself as bigger because she said she's been trying to get lean as if she doesn't recognize she's already very thin...no hate or anything but I don't think she sees her body correctly
@@scubatuba1083 mmmmmmmmmm yeah
Not only did they talk about it during panel, they decided to also air this on TV for the whole world to see.
Totally agree about having a word that's hurt you written all over your body. I get what they were going for, but it felt less like a "reclaim and be proud!" thing and more of a way to get the girls to expose their pain for the drama of television. I don't want to compare one kind of bullying as "worse," and of course I don't know the situations, but the examples were things like "band geek" which is vastly different from "queer." I'm queer and love the word because of its history and inclusivity, but I wasn't called it as a slur because I didn't come out until college. Watching this I was thinking of all the words I could've chosen for myself in this shoot (not a model but not the point), and the one that hurt me the most would probably be "retard." I have ADHD and was supposed to get tested for autism, but my parents never told me that last part. They just said I got diagnosed with ADHD but "it's not real, it's just an excuse to be lazy" and when I asked what it was they said "it means you're a retard. You're too smart to be retarded." That's something I heard a lot from my parents and peers. "You're so smart but you act like a retard." Cause I flap my hands when happy, or get really excited and rambly about my interests, or struggled with social cues. I was thrown in lockers, pushed down stairs, told I belonged on "the short bus."
All this to say, if I were in this shoot, I would NOT be comfortable having a neurotypical makeup artist write "retard" all over my skin. And if queer had been used against me, I would NOT feel comfortable having a cishet person write it on my body. Actually, even having not been called it as a slur, I still don't think I'd be okay with that (I have still had to deal with queerphobia). I'd do it, but it'd take a lot not to break down. And having that trauma be judged? And knowing I could be eliminated having "retard" all over my body? The whole things feels disgusting and performative. Like it was never about anti-bullying. It's possible every one of these girls was bullied, but it's also possible not all of them were, yet they had to pick words used against them and held them on the same level. Again, I don't wanna diminish the harm of these words, but some of these are insecurities and some are trauma, and they're being treated as the same for the sake of an anti-bullying campaign. I don't know if I'm making sense. It just feels icky to go "you've all been bullied for something, write it on your skin" when some of them may not have been bullied and may have been bullies themselves. This isn't "anti-bullying" it's pro-victim empowerment after bullying, doing nothing to prevent or address bullying itself. Like "Oh I was called this but if I just think about it differently it's actually empowering." That CAN be a good lesson, but here it just felt cheap and inauthentic.
So i sometimes have felt like Jessica has hid behind the "what do you guys think" and in this video I think she handled it very well. She really laid down the body shaming not being ok, that if there's valid concern for someone's health to not address it in front of cameras, how inappropriate it is, calling out hypocrisy....thank you jessica.
Yeah..as someone with body-dysmorphia and has sufferd with ed since the age of 11...you can't just say to someone "look at your body..do you see how unwell you look?",, NO TYRA! no she doesnt!! Bc she may have an issue and may look in the mirror and see a full figured 'fat' girl...
At least she said something instead of applauding it like the modelling industry usually does.
And telling her she's unhealthy is encouraging her ED. People don't understand that telling them they look how they aim to look is a compliment to the ED, not a form of help.
There is something about how they basically forced the models to talk about their trauma so openly that doesn't sit right with me. I would at least wat some sort of acknowledgement that they talked about it willingly.
Also the girl with "queer" written all over her body. I have a similar story and i never want to see the word meant to dismiss and dehumanize me written on myself. Yeah, there's a power in reclaiming words, but not everyone wants to and that needs to be respected. (also i'd argue being put in a situation like this isn't really giving the choice to reclaim words like that)
Yeah, that made me feel uncomfortable too. Who is Tyra to say how the model should feel about that word? If there is trauma attached to it she may never be able to "take the word back" and that should be respected. Empowerment is not empowerment if it's forced.
Exactly, that should come from the person themselves saying they're going to take back that word. It'd be one thing to have a casting call for models who'd be open to do something like that, but to force the women on the show and to corner them into doing it, is bullying in and of itself.
when i saw the girl who had the word "athletic" on her bicep i was like oh wow thats a great placement for that word cause its like saying F you look at the strength i have...then that judge literally says "i don't like the muscle" 😤
The judges: you have to look healthy to be beautiful
Also the judges: I don't see a model, I see an athlete and I don't like the way your arm muscles look (even though muscular was her bully word)
“This is the nicest panel I’ve ever seen”
Well… that went down hill like lava from an erupting volcano
Here they're like "oh you're too thin" but then in other seasons they also call out the girls for gaining weight.
For example Anchal and London (don't remember which season exactly). And they looked amazing!!
And keenya
Was gonna say they RIPPED keenya apart WHILE she was being sexually harrassed
And Kenya/London/Anchal weren't Big, just a VERY LITTLE chubby
They clearly wanted to make an example of her. I think they'd gotten backlash in the past about super skinny models and when they had "plus-sized" models, they were not true plus-sized. So they deliberately did this as an attempt to show they care. But it was awful and def should not have been done the way it was.
She was a plant. There was controversy during the run up to this season about the other girl who ended up winning, but she's super tall and her frame is tiny. Some people got all panty bunched, so they probably found this girl from an 'ed' clinic or something and paid her to act all stupid about it.
I remember in cycle 3 when Janice favored Tocarra (plus-sized) over Kelle only because Kelle did horrible. She even said "you know how I feel about large women in couture"
That was 100% body shaming! I’ve been heavy most of my life, and I was shamed by my family so much I wanted to end my life. Just because she’s thin doesn’t make it any less horrible. It’s never ok to make comments like that about someone’s body, especially publicly. I’m sickened by what I saw.
The conversation they had with Anamaria is so stressful. Like yes I love them taking a stance and emphasizing the importance of health in the modeling industry. But also you are so right that it was beyond inappropriate for them to have that conversation in front of the camera targeting just her. But also let’s talk about the hypocrisy inherent in focusing on her weight whole not mentioning Ann’s?
I’m a dietitian and we deal with people with ED’s it certainly looks/sounds like this girl has one. But you never know ultimately from just an episode on tv. They shouldn’t have done it in front of everyone. If she has an ED she doesn’t want people to know that. Maybe she doesn’t even know it herself and really thinks she is beautiful that skinny. Then it’s just a great insult she just got. Some people with an ED are striving to the thinnest possible so if people are telling them things like this they are thinking i’m doing great because they all think i’m thin. It may make the ED worse. It’s a difficult thing to deal with but they should never spoken about her body like that. They should have spoken with her in private (a psychologist preferred) and should have focussed more on the psychology with it so she sees why it is not healthy to starve yourself and sees why she is behaving that way. They should Not have focussed on how she looks.
This is the perfect comment.
Yeah, imo, they really just lead a lamb straight out to slaughter here. They saw an opportunity to show what they’re not promoting to appear like a positive influence and have the kindest of hearts. But in reality, they merely used her to promote a narrative without her consent. There’s so many better routes to promote positive health, than shining a spotlight on an unsuspecting victim for all to see. The whole narrative of that episode leading to that moment definitely seems completely and purposefully constructed. I feel like they knew exactly what they were going to do with her from the get go and it really gives me the ick. Like so many others, I can’t believe I never saw how twisted this show was when I was younger. It’s disturbing.
@@vaulthuntr indeed…
The part about her being "too skinny" is such horseshit. It's not right, but that's the EXACT look many designers are looking for. If they're genuinely concerned about her health, that's a conversation they need to have off-camera. Shitting on her publicly can just make an ED worse.
She could have a ed dude them saying stuff like that is harsh. I had an eating disorder and people would say stuff like that and I'd cry and it only made it worse for me. What's wrong with people? I'm sorry for all those people who are going through something right now you are not alone. You are worthy, and you are amazing don't forget it. Your body size does not determine your worth.

"Today we're focusing on teen bullying"
So... like every week?
Bruh saying things like “ur to skinny” or “u look unhealthy” or something along the lines of that is still a form of body shaming!
I got really angry with them about the girl who didn't want queer written on her. That abviously was a trigger for her. And I know they don't care either way which is so inhuman.
For anyone who has not had any trauma in their life please do not judge someone that will have an episode after seeing, hearing or even touching something that will trigger the episode. I have seen comments that said "triggers are for weak people". We are some of the strongest people you will ever meet.
Skinny girl here! I can see their concerns about that girl’s health, but it was absolutely uncalled for the way they handled that situation. That was not something that should have been addressed in front of cameras or even in front of the other models. And some girls are JUST SKINNY. Maybe she is genetically prone to be much skinnier than the average girl. Also the comment Tyra made about the model’s message to young girls was uncalled for. If I was a model, one of my biggest things would be to encourage and empower ALL body types. We get bullied for our size, just like big girls do. I was very disappointed and honestly disgusted with the way that was handled, but props to that model for staying strong though the criticism.
Think about the time period this was made in. Skinny girls literally were the only ones in the media, skinny girls are by definition not marginalized. They are celebrated and uplifted. That’s why ppl say body positivity really isn’t for skinny ppl. You have skinny body positivity every time turn on the TV. I’m not even fat and I can admit that Plus sized women are the ones that don’t have representation.
@@Latte-girly90 Thank you for explaining your point of view. What really makes me sad is how the media chooses to pin women of diversity, body type included, against one another.
I mean you could assume she had an eating disorder by the things she said in the show, and she looked very different to another naturally skinny girl in the show, Anne, the winner (she was 6’1” and one of the judges could wrap around his hands around her waist). But still, the way they treated her was horrible, you should not treat anyone with and eating disorder like that, it’s horrible and it just causes more problems
@@Latte-girly90 I get what you trying to say but considering it's under a video where a girl is constantly bullied for her weight and eliminated, I don't think that applies here.
@@Latte-girly90 fat girl here. There's a difference between skinny girls and severely underweight girls. Body positivity is for severely underweight girls as well. Considering many suffer from anorexia, bullying, etc. they are just as valid as us. Many women are unable to gain weight no matter how they try and shouldn't be treated like this
Crazy how over 10 years ago, Queer was a harsh word and now it's widely used in the LGBTQIA community
The word was successfully reclaimed, we did it!
The model mentioned that she wanted a more severe slur and the show didn’t allow it.
But don't forget, these are slurs, they do not belong into the acronym. Sorta how blm isn't n word lives matter

ANTM: this shoot is about combatting teen bullying! Oh teen bullying is just the worst!!!
Also ANTM: ew look at this teen shes so skinny how disgusting. Get her out of here!
"TEEN BULLYING IS BAD...but since you're adults now...I CAN BULLY YOU ALL I WANT."
Though they didn't say she was disgusting for being so skinny, they said she looked unhealthy and that that could be triggering for others. There's a difference.
"I'm not a G and I look bigger than you"
There she goes again, Tyra making a situation about herself.
Also, why destroying that poor girl in front of everybody and on national tv? she literally bullied her over her body type but why did you pick her in the first place if you think her body sends a wrong message?
Words can't describe how disgusted I feel by how Tyra and her crew treated all these girls for years.
competing about bra size is ridiculous
The joke is that they publicly confront and chastised a girl for being too thin, but whenever they’ve done casting episodes, particularly in places like Paris and Milan with the biggest fashion houses, it’s the skinniest girls who get jobs/ would get booked outside of the show. They’re lying about her body not working for designers and also publicly ‘exposing’ someone who is suffering from mental health issues.
As someone who has struggled with eating and body image issues in the past, I am disgusted with their actions. They never should have outed her on national television. If they had actually wanted to help they should have gotten a trained medical professional to speak with her if she wanted to off camera and in a comfortable setting.
People don’t care about that! It’s a business so they don’t care about your feeling and it is also not their responsibility.
It’s YOUR own responsibility to go and look for help!
I remember this episode I felt like it was wrong to comment on Anamaria’s body but I remember they did show she was losing like a lot of weight in like not a good way. Not sure if it’s real or not of course since this is “reality tv” but either way some comments they make on this show is not right. Plus if they wanted to talk to her if they were concerned they could of done that in private. I did like the concept but I do feel like it could be triggering to some and I felt so sorry towards Kayla and others who may be triggered by this.
The episode is about anti bullying and yet one of the girls is being body shamed! Just wow!
"Beauty is health" is one of the most over simplified and ableist things I've heard in ages.
As someone who has struggled since 8 years old with an ED.... I actually don't have a problem with the way they talked to that girl.
Keeping it off air, pulling her to the side, making it all hush hush and private is worse than what they did. You dont want to keep forcing such issues underground, making them seem uncommon and necessary to hide. By Tyra saying the things she did, she is sending the message to young girls and aspiring models, that giving yourself over to an eating disorder is not the way. It is unhealthy. Young girls will hear that and hopefully start becoming more focused on health rather than skinny. She was not bullying or outright shaming, but explaining the reason why they decided to eliminate the contestant from this particular competition.
Now, whether the girl dove straight into even more ED habits upon release from the show..... that's not the fault of the show. That's solely the fault of the ED and of the person battling body image issues/dysmorphia. The girl had a choice... take the advice, confront her challenges head on, meet with a nutritionist or dietician and set goals to build muscle for a more athletic body.... or she could engage in unhealthy habits.
And again.... I'm speaking as someone who has relapsed multiple times and the temptation is there every time something stressful or tragic happens, every failure, every feeling of loneliness and depression. My teeth have broken, my skin aged, my mind deteriorated. And I have a condition that causes abnormal fat deposits in my legs and upper arms (that do not respond to diet or exercise, the only way to "fix" it is expensive surgery to remove the nodules), so my torso and face would be emaciated while my legs resembled a morbidly obese person. Even with the knowledge that it isn't under my control, I'd restrict and work out and abuse my body. ..... I am speaking from a place of complete ED understanding.
We need more of the public "no, this is not cute, this is not okay, here are some resources..."
Actually.... that is something I wish the show had handled differently. If Tyra and company had filmed a segment where they offer the girl access to some resources or a nutritionist and asked her if she would be open to changing her physique. She could still be lean, but would be healthy, fit, and could be more of an inspiration to girls... not just those with an ED.... But for girls that are naturally very, very slender, and have trouble gaining weight and maintaining muscle.
NO FR!!! her body is absolutely unhealthy and triggering if they kept her on theyd be premoting an extremely unhealthy body!!!
Judges say girl it's unhealthy to be so skinny.
Judges say Robin is too big at booty and plus-size.
Kek.
I think its more like they screened her in instead of actually sharing concern and advice for her. They basically exploited her especially on a shoot that is about bullying she probably had thise comments made to her and all she would hear insult rather than opinions and theres also lack of therapy after this. So this was irresponsible.
@@uwuseokie4123 i do agree it shouldve been handled better but i agree w what they did
Tyra was responsible in making Anamaria a finalist (this episode literally aired after an episode of Tyra picking the finalists) so why bring her on at all if you're just going to humiliate her? absolutely shameless.
Maybe im wrong, but i wouldve sweared in one of the interviews for the cycle 15 members (I aint sure if it was from Oliver Twixt or by mr Jay) one of them mentioned that after casting they left, and when they came back to start filming, Ann Maria had lost lots of weight

You made such a good point about body policing! Just because the modeling industry showcases a body's form in an artistic picture does not mean they have a right TO a person's body. There's no reason they should ever critique someone's body in such a way. They can recommend body position or emotion, because those things are conducive to the shoot itself. But telling a person that they need to fix their size is a personal attack.
I feel like this should’ve been with only the power words written on them. Embrace who you are today, not dwell on the past
If im gonna be honest, my model career was more like the top model shoots then ur reactions, I´m glad to hear things are changing, & I have learned to say no ore walk away if lines are crossed, losing jobs in the prossess, but they did imitate reality more then people today think, at least back in the day. I was bullied for being too thin (due to health issues), and yes, there is a line, but calling someone out in public for it just doesn't seem fair, or good for anyone. We need to talk about beauty standards and stuff as a society, but critiquing someone's body on TV is not the place for it.
The irony! They had a whole photo shoot about bullying and then turn around and basically bully this girl by shaming her so publicly about her body. The whole situation was handled completely irresponsibly I agree.
My bully word was “Giant” because I’m a 5’10” girl and that was why boys never asked me to dances and things like that. But there was a 6 foot tall girl in the grade above me and she got asked to prom and was popular because she played basketball and lacrosse. Makes sense huh.
As a 6 foot tall lady person i swear our height is good for 1) basketball 2) volleyball 3) modelling. If we do none of those things its like what are our lives even. ANTM seems to really thrive on using past trauma to get views. You can dig into your emotions without bringing up triggers, ptsd, cptsd, ANY TRAUMA. Especially trauma written on your body? The amount that can mess with your head is insane. I used to write what I was called on me as a kid bc I sincerely believed them, and that led to self harm. Honestly the way she said that was so inappropriate “the thinnest of the thinnest” can be a positive thing for people with EDs. It could actually be pushing her the other way.
Anamaria got body-shamed. It's NOT OK to eliminate someone for their body and not their performance... Even though I understand the reasoning behind it, it's not the way to go about this issue, EVER.
And so many people get away with body-shaming skinny people that it baffles me. If the girl would've been 'bigger' than average, and they eliminate her based on her weight... it wouldn't have gone so smoothly.
