Longplay: Duke Nukem - Episode 1: "Shrapnel City" (1991) [MS-DOS]
Vložit
- čas přidán 14. 08. 2024
- The game is set in the year 1997 (which was the "near future" at the time of game release). Dr. Proton is a madman, determined to take over the world with his army of Techbots. Duke Nukem, the eponymous hero, takes upon the task of stopping him. The first episode takes place in the devastated city of Los Angeles. In the second episode, Duke chases Dr. Proton to his secret moonbase. In the third episode, Dr. Proton escapes into the future, and Duke pursues him through time, to put a permanent end to his mad schemes.
The main objective of the game is to get to the exit of each level, while destroying enemies and collecting points. Many objects onscreen can be shot including boxes, obstacles and blocks. Besides points, some collectibles include health powerups, gun powerups, and some inventory items with special abilities. The final level of each episode has no exit, and is instead completed by finding and defeating Dr. Proton.
At the end of every level (with the exception of the last level in each episode), the player can receive up to seven 10,000 point bonuses, earned by making certain achievements in the level, such as destroying all cameras.
Duke Nukem (sometimes referred to as Duke Nukum) is a 2D platform game developed and published by Apogee Software (now 3D Realms), featuring the adventures of the fictional character Duke Nukem.
Duke Nukem was followed by Duke Nukem II in 1993, featuring the same hero still without the dark sunglasses, and later Duke Nukem 3D in 1996. A third sequel, Duke Nukem Forever, was announced in 1997. Plagued by various developmental problems and delays, the game would later be picked up by Gearbox Software and released in 2011, fourteen years after the game was announced and twenty years after the first game was released. In a downloadable content (DLC) for that game, titled "The Doctor Who Cloned Me", Dr. Proton made his return.

I remember playing this on my dad's work machine as a kid. In my opinion the best platformer ever made. So good
Yes definitely
LOL was just thinking about that too. OMG and I had the sound on.
Same here! My dad brought me and my brother to the police department where he worked and we were allowed to play games on one of the computers at the station :) We loved this game! This and Dyna Blaster! :)
Same here. Anyone recommend a laptop i could play it on? The one i used had a black and white screen can't remember the make.
It's definitely up there
I see I'm part of many people who played this on their parents work computers mid 90s lol. Memories of this game are so surreal. Was some magic to the early games like this. Wolfenstein, dare 2 dream, kid pix, ski free
Dare 2 Dream was amazing
Does anyone else feel old watching this? 😂
Oh those sound effects...right in the nostalgia 🤤
This was the first video game I played ever. My mom brought me in her old office and one of his co-workers decided to let me play on one of the work PCs while I was there. I was probably not even close to being 5 but somehow, I still remember how this game looked like. That was also the last time I played Duke on DOS to this day.
I played the shit out of this as a kid in the mid 90s. The sound effects bring me right back, would love to play this again.
You can still play this on any computer you like :)
@@Dosgamert emulator? which do you recommend?
@@ihcman9130 Dosbox for sure
I've been searching for this game for years, last time I saw it played, it was around 2000-2002, I was around 6. I have never felt such a strong nostalgic feeling.
Same
Been searching for years
That is one of the best feelings in life :')
Same here!!! I played this back in 2001 when I was 6 on our old family computer and it’s probably one of the most nostalgic games to me out there. I just recently played it again and wow it just instantly took me back to those days !!!! 😭
+1
Especially the sounds.
They were planted in my kid brain.
Never got out.
Awesome!
Ladies and gentlemen, the humble beginnings of Duke Nukem.
Loved this one, Commander Keen and Crystal Caves. All very good platform games.
yes all those.. do you remember Captain comic?
Yes COMMANDER KEEN!!!
You know it’s an early 90s game when the collectibles are a joystick and a floppy disk.
Man....Duke Nukem sure has gone a long way since his "humble" beginnings.
But I do prefer this over DN Forever. My favourite is Duke Nukem II.
DNII fares better than this one. It doesn't even have music. Also, IKR! Forever felt like I was playing fucking Resistance instead of a Duke game.
@@Dosgamert Hell yeah, Duke Nukem II was the best Duke game in my opinion too. Few games make me feel as good just blasting the everliving hell out of everything, and it all blows up so good. The sound is awesome, especially the bassy explosions and gunshots , but even the item pickup noises, and the visual effects were some of my favorite of the era (or indeed, of any era). You're absolutely tearing it up on your alien abductors' homeworld, and the game sure makes you feel like it.
Humble beginning to Tragic Death 💔 Duke Nukem Forever
Duke was so much better in his humble beginnings... Duke 1 and 2 were awesome! Duke 3D - well let's just say it would have been awesome if they'd left out all the dirty garbage, and same from then on... Call me a prude, but DN3D ticks me off, because the game had SO MUCH going for it - the 3D engine was groundbreaking for its time! But, they just HAD to oversexualize it, making it inappropriate for those who would easily find themselves playing the first two and wanting to continue with Duke, only to find that he had turned into an extremely creepy bully... Sure, you could say he was always a cocky jerk, but there was a humorous, mocking tone to his character before; but as they developed Duke, they really wanted to make it clear that he had literally no decency or empathy whatsoever... I know most people probably prefer him this way, but I think it's a shame... No class...
My childhood right here. MSDOS on a 486 computer. Played this game (also Wolf3d and Keen) constantly. Held the point record 🙌🏻 miss this
I loved this game so much. Good memories
We were looking at old photos of my 2 boys at 'Christmas Work,' as they used to call it. All the parents at our IT company brought their kids to work before the Christmas break. In one of the photos, one of my boys pointed out the Duke Nukem image on the monitor behind him. My colleagues and I used to play it at lunch. Brought back memories.
Lo jugaba de escondidas en una oficina que alquilaba. Juegazo y aún lo juego mi niñez está guardada con ese juego
If I could make one critisism of this game, it is that there are not enough meaningless points-pickups that go BLEEURP
Used to play this on my uncle's pc in the 90s... Lost to time. I love CZcams
Have you played Duke Nukem 2 ? :)
I have not, actually, but I played DN 3D religiously lol
I love the sound effects, particularly when you get the balloon :D
You should rip that sound and use it as notification tone for your phone. See how much you love it after a week xD
@@Dosgamert lol you did it didn't you
Finally. I played this as a kid on my mom's work computer, and for the life of me, I never knew what it was. The nostalgia of this is insane.
I love that final message 'If you want to order the game, pay 30, get it all and more, and SPECIFY YOUR DISK SIZE..' ha ha! Awesome!
I used to play this a lot as a kid, had no clue what to do or what was going on lol, but surely loved to play back in the day.
Thanks for the upload i remember playing this game when i was 4 years old. Iv been trying to find out what it was called for the last 5 years. Finally. Thanks alot brings back soooooo many memories.
Same bro...
I totally forgot about this game I must have played 20 years ago when I was not even 10. Thank you for reminding me ! I loved it even though I never saw level 2 haha
This game was my childhood! Watching this I remember every level!
I remember playing this before flat screen computers came out.
I have kept my old computer tower(the box thing) as I have all my old games on it. Duke was always my favourite.
This was always a favorite, I played the hell out of it. Definitely one of the best apogee games with a really great atmosphere. And I love those sound effects
Check out my review of DN1 on my channel too! It's in English and Dutch!
Omg the memories I have with this game omg
One of the best 2D shooter game I ever play, along with Metal Slug
Metal Slug is a run and gun, and this is not
Wow! What a blast from the past! I remember playing this game around 1992/1993 on my dads old Windows 3.1 or 3.2 PC. Can't actually remember if I ever finished the game haha.
If only there were ports of this game for the NES, Sega Master System, Atari Jaguar, Game Boy, Game Gear, and Atari Lynx.
Console ports would have been very cool. Fixed up the scrolling and improve the graphics
There a Port of Duke nukem on game boy color xD the game its really cool
@@paulpatti8184 I know but it’s based on DN2
Where Duke Nukem all began. Both the Full registered version of this and Duke Nukem II were included as bonus games on the regular edition of Duke Nukem 3D on MS-DOS and I just started playing Duke Nukem 1 yesterday.
Finished beating episode 1. Now I'm onto Episode 2.
Played the hell out of this on my 286 back when I was a kid.
Whoever makes PS4, PLEASE put this game and EVERY 80's game on one compilation. There ARE people who want to play even this
Best game of all time for my nostalgias sake. Thank you for this
Que saudade... Joguei muito esse jogo! 🥲
That hit the spot!!! Even the ordering info screen took me back. THANK YOU!
Edit: Somebody should try writing the address listed 😊
Old good memories. I remembered my friend introduced this game to me and I immediately fell in love with it.
It kinda freaked me out that I 100% recognized that start of the first level.
haha i know right, i played this so much as a kid none of it looks unfamiliar
Thank you for your comment. That means a lot! I hope you enjoy all of the content that is coming real soon! Maybe try tuning in on a livestream Monday night, next Monday I'm playing Bio Menace Episode 2, I am sure you will love it! Say hi to your son from Bart, from Amsterdam.
Wow I beat this game as a kid in School's computer class. The PCs where Windows 95 maybe older? and came with a set of games, This one, the sci-fi pong game where you break blocks, a billard game and something else. All the kids where playing Billards and everyone came to watch when I beat the final boss here. Couple years later, Duke Nukem 64 became my fav game ever I was literally invincible in MP xD
From the decent 2D shooter series (Duke Nukem 1 & 2) to become a revolutionary 3D FPS series such as DN3D & Zero Hour with a God-tier level design with its versatility. Something like Metal Slug & Contra franchise failed to adopt the transition from 2D to 3D formula. That's why I think Duke Nukem series is superior beast and league ahead. Well, we don't wanna talk about DN Forever but y'all can't deny Duke Nukem 3D and Zero hour were something special, mind blowing, game changer and brought an impact for the series.
As a kid, I played this on a disk that came with a gaming magazine my brother got, it had a ton of these kinds of games on it.
This was one of the first video games I ever played. I remember being so young playing this at my house and getting so pissed because for my age it was hard lol what nostalgia
This, Sokoban, Defender of the crown, Gorillas, Sid meirs pirates, Test drive, Lemmings and Arkanoid was my entire childhood that made me into a complete game nerd!
I miss the days of the PC speaker. My buddy enabled it on Doom 2 once and I felt like that was how the game should be played.
I played this game as a kid but I had no idea it was called Duke Nukem! haha
fuck nostalgia hitting harder than ever what a game it was amazing adventurous game playing and compoleting after so many tries wow man i used to play it in a trash pc in 2004-05
this, Turrican 1/2, Hocus Pocus and Jazz Jackrabbit are all DOS platformers that hold up very well today
Hey, you should totally join our discord :)
OMG ITS REAL! I remember playing this as a kid and thinking it was a dream.
I had this reaction to the legend of zelda show. I was not born when it aired, but the super mario show was on netflix and like every five episodes, the legend of zelda show intro would play. It influenced my dreams, ending up in a realy weird one that i remember parts of for a long time.I was just looking around the internet one day, and i see a meme about it. This makes me curious and i watch 5 episodes and my brain can't take any more.
ha haaa I love that stupid laser trap in the yellow platform stage that can't actually hurt you but that you have to go near frequently, just so it can annoy you with the noise it makes. I am surprised I didn't even get that far back when I played this. I never even knew about the climbing claws. I wonder why they didn't emphasize that gameplay element more.
Might you ever want to see me play this live, I did do this on a livestream once or twice too!
Éste videojuego necesita un remake urgente. Y aguante Duke Nukem
Still one of the best from the 1990's !!!!
Epic game. Brings back memories
I used to play this back in 95 in kindergarten
Really underappreciated classic, imo. For an action game of the time, the open levels and exploration are all integrated incredibly well. I'm aware Metroidvanias are a thing but there's something to be said for a more linear game like this where the levels feel big and full of secrets. Also the scoring system(s) are genuinely very varied and fun, and add loads of depth to replaying the game. Is there any anything more satisfying then seeing all those bonuses appear in the save corridors? It might have been the only game I played when I was younger where I actually have a damn about the high score. Even the narrative where the main antagonist taunts you through the game on those monitors is pretty unique as well.
I've played all the classic run and gun game series, like Contra, Metal Slug, Turrican, and then just about every other game where you are a dude shooting a gun in a 2D space, but this game has something going on about it I've rarely seen elsewhere. I'm aiming to marry together the game concepts in this game and the other series I've mentioned in my next game project, to make the perfect run and gun by my own standards.
Have you seen the smooth Duke 1 remaster?
Nostalgic fierceness
I remember playing this in my computer teachers class she was cool as hell ms Martinez back 97’ 98 man elementary was fun
I loved this game
Damn I was 11 years old learning dos as a kid and downloading games off of bulletin boards which was the internet back then
Dude, I was 3 rofl!
Omg I loved this game so much lol
This game kept me sane while at grammas as a kid
I remember beating this game when i was probably 7 years old. Doubt i could now lol
Same here. I'm sometimes impressed by the games 7 yo me managed to beat
Imagine Mario was packing heat like this?
17:45 like popping bubble wrap
💕💕💕💕
I really hope that a fan can turn this game into like Duke nukem 3.
Have you seen the 60fps Remaster?
@Dosgamert no not really
11:32 fact check. If you jump on those mini-drones from above, you gain way more points than if you shoot ‘em.
this is one of the few games i remember beating. could never get past the first boss in duke nukem 2 tho
It's getting a remaster and it comes out this month! I'll be sure to cover it on CZcams!
Good ol random dos games :)
I like mario teaches typing i played it when i was younger
But i havent played doom and wolfenstein and some random dos games before :(
Cuz its so hard to use dosbox
Huge nostalgia bomb here!
I love the fact this game look like a real arcade platform game istead a simple game for DOS.
WE NEED A FULL REMAKE OF THIS ON PC
Its "Nukum" here lol. Even in the original there's still those video camera units lol
This is what started it all!
@@Dosgamert Absolutely! I'm forging ahead in Wolf3D right now. About to buy a ps4 controller for Android gamepad use. The aftermarket controllers have very mixed reviews and it may be overkill but I need a reliable controller. 😎
THANKS RANDY for removing this gem out of steam ...nice gameplay
I find it interesting that this is how Duke Nukem started, the only thing that seems to be related to his other games is that he's a buff blonde dude with a gun
Офигенная игра на все времена!!
I think they should make computers that have ALL the games Epic Megagames and Apogee ever made on them and sell them. There'd be some games that people would still play
Yo this gave me just the mandela effect, i always tought it was Duke Nukem with an e, but it actually is Duke Nukum with an u. Mind blown!
Both is correct! Copyright ussues, but they changed it later back to NukEm.
Oh the simple days of childhood :/
Possibly the first video game I ever played. I still have it on Steam haha
The best thing is that it's called "Nukum" in this version.
Omg the memories. Anyone else here with autism? I'm just curious.
I'm weird, but not diagnosed with anything! Do you?
I loved this !!!! Wish I could still get it 😭
You can find the dos rom online and play it on android phone with emulator :)
I still own almost every Apogee game. I miss those days, the Golden Age of gaming. Now look at how corporatized and sterilized gaming is, most companies cater to the dumbest, lowest common denominator instead of the passionate fans, releasing games that are so casual they entirely lack challenge.
Thank god for the indie scene!
I miss the early 90's. I remember going to Radio Shack and buying shareware games.
And military shooter fame, shoot 1000 nazis no unique whatsoever, just mp40 and nazis
Needed a Nes and Master System release:)
Yes would have loved to ay this back in the day, but I never had a computer.
Back before Duke was revamped to be more "mature". A similar fate happened with Rare's Conker.
and it worked for both of those characters
So the 1st game was actually called Duke Nukum instead of Duke Nukem? Interesting.
Were these old Dos games written in Assembly, C or C++?
The bouncing cow utters??? 😂
my memories!!!!
Duke Nukum??!, WTF??!!, Did they make a typo on the very title screen or there's something im missing???.
+DieHard300 You're missing something. It isn't a typo. After making Duke Nukem they found out that the name 'Duke Nukem' was already claimed so they changed it to 'Nukum' to prevent any problems. Later it appeared not to be claimed and they switched the name back to 'Nukem'. This was changed in later versions of the game :) More details can be googled!
Lol, that would really sucked if stayed that way, Duke Nukum sounds really horrible XDDD , glad everything went back to normal.
Would love to see a remake of this using a modern 2D engine (perhaps something similar to the one used for Streets of Rage 4 etc).
There's a game on Steam called Muri, it's really good.
It’s being remade on the Evercade 👍
Wow I would love to find a way to play this game again 😭😭😭
Search for Dosbox
Can you even play this game right now? Is there a way to play it or download it?
You can buy in on Steam. I have it, and Duke Nukem 2 and 3D
@@LightStreak567 i checked and this version aint on steam, unless u got a link to the steam page
@@Grandrepublic501st That's strange, they must have removed Duke Nukem 1 and 2. I bought them before they were removed.
I still remember the cheat code for all of the keys was backspace+page down
Good old Ms dos
great game I played long time ago first time later I bought full version came with Duke Nukem 3d
nice music
khm... until today, i thought Duke Nukem 3D was the first...
There's even a Duke Nukem II!
Definitely needs a port like DN2 has with Rigel
I would love to see DN1 get the same treatment
