I think Bakura's most telling line for his character is the "I have ways I like to win and ways I hate to win" from the end of his BC duel against Yugi. It fits with how all his decks are gimmicky in a remarkably streamlined way compared to his peers. Like his overarching theme for the most part is evil spirits & occultism, but each of his decks have a cohesive strategy, and they all lean into control/ stun builds because our boi is on a permanent joker arc. He uses basically everything except direct beatdown cards, from floodgates to burn to control stealing etc. Even Hades has it's effect negation niche to block undesirable effects when attacking. He consistently shows that he doesn't like brute forcing a win, he wants to win "clever" or through some way of controlling the game state. It also fits with his first challenge to Yugi in the manga, where they fought in a TTRPG he DM'd; His Exodia parallel Destiny Board plays out on the field where his opponent can see it building up, much like how a "lose condition" for a ttrpg party plays out in front of them over turns, assuming the DM isn't pulling an instant death gotcha, which notably Bakura didn't do; even his gotcha death traps took multiple turns and had ways to get out of them. He's a super adversarial DM but he's never outright unfair, just somewhat bs. His way of favouring decks that create lockdowns or mess with his opponent makes him great for creating puzzle scenarios in duels, where his board/ setup needs to be actively dismantled rather than just beat over, which works great as a rival for Yugi who's thing is being quick thinking and good at games, and is literally wearing the millennium *puzzle* he previously solved.
I always thought Bakura's cards were really cool and ahead of their time in some aspects. The guy was manipulating the GY, snatching monsters and setting up OTKs before it was the norm. Plus, Destiny Board and Dark Necrofear were fittingly creepy. I just wish Konami would make a few more support cards.
Not mentioning the first one to play floodgates. He was really ahead of his time. But unfortunately back then you had ultra edgy characters like Kaiba and marik taking the spot light. Early yugioh people only cared about beat down and strength not about strategy and field control like bakura did, now in 2024 is all about combo and control decks rather than classic straight forward beatdown
I could absolutely see Bakura getting some Link monster(s) that, when placed in a main monster zone, allow tou to put Spirit Message cards from GY, Hand, or Banish, in any zones they point to during your End Phase. (I could also see Orichalcos support working similarly to get extra monster zones)
For anyone scrolling through the comments nova meant to say that you don’t get the boosted attack if you activate chaos 62. You still can attack three times with a 4000 attack monster but it’s not gonna shoot up to what this guy is normally infamous for doing.
Favorite Bakura card for me was the Baby doll head Necrofear. Not only is it a creepy card, but it was beautiful addition to a Golden Castle Of Stromberg Deck. Since the Field Spell banishes cards from your deck, Necrofear can get it all back into the deck, extending the viability of it by a lot. I've personally ran a 60 card Stromberg with a full set of Baby Doll in it and I'll always get it in first draw....
Everyone knows about season zero and Yamis' darker period, but what everyone overlooks is that there is a reasonable explanation. Atem sacrificed himself to save the world by trapping his soul with Zorc in the Millenium pendent (puzzle) which then split. He has resided in the relic for thousands of years with the corrupting demon itself. Being the pure hearted Pharoah, he did not fall as quick or easy as others like the thief king who had much more set up to, but he was being slowly influenced by his proximity to Zorc. When the puzzle is completed, only he is immedoatly released and slowly purified again through his newfound friendship. It's even a wish for friendship by Yugi that is made on his release. This is part of why the friendship theme is so important, and he doesn't want to leave them so ademently at the end. They replaced the part of him Zorc influenced so now they are an integral piece of Atwms spiritual being. The spirit of thw ring is actually an amalgamation of the soul of the thief king and a piece of Zorcs own soul. This is key because the spirit regains more of its power and memories when Bakura and Yami meet. Beforehand, he would make the opponents Bakura faced go into a coma but didn't have the ability to posses Bakura strait out. He was still trapped within the ring but at the moment he came close to the Puzzle and thus the rest of the imprisoned Zorc, the piece of Zorc in the ring was more released. The longer he spent near the puzzle the more of his past started coming back and the more he was able to set up a plan to release the rest of Zorc. Interestingly, Zorc himself is shown to not see this fragments of his soul withing others as anything more than pawns anymore and is intrigued but annoyed by their insistence that they ARE him..in some way. The thief king spirit is the only way Zorc could be freed from the puzzle however so it is important to note while it was Zorc who made the thief king what he was, it was the thief king himself who impacted a piece of his own soul and zorcs into the ring by using the acquired souls plot abilty from the fragment of zorcs he already had AND put a piece in the already corrupting high priest. If ot weren't for the autonomous actions of this particular pawn, he never would have gotten as close as he did to taking over the world the first time nor had any chance at it again. It's further important to note Zorc set himself up for failure with the puzzle. It was one of the items which were made through his deal. It allowed him to escape into he mortal realm in exchange for a wish (which we learn is a genies wish) the items and control of the "ultimate" monster. Of course, being all possessions of Zorc granted to the preists, it was never intended that they be able to be used agaisnt him. The items seemed too weak in their abilities to stop him and even Exodia was not enough. However, the pendants abilty to seal souls withing it was his undoing. This is likely because of the self sacrificing cost required, which Zorc could not understand someone commiting as a purely self serving demon. It was very much an illusion to the evil containment wave technique of DragonBall and the older cultural mythologies that inspired it. The hero sacrifices himself to seal away a great evil who never expected the threat as they could never anticipate anyone to be capable of such a selfless act. Zorc has so much power but is the ultimate evil in every way we would expect, including with the inherent flaws. Despite what he feels through his arrogance, Zorc is best as a corrupting and empowering influence. He was even doing his thing with the soul of Yami until Yugi and Co got the head start of undoing things before Bakura snake in his teeth. I think this is why Bakura is more the true strong final villain. He is the proactive vessel of the plot. Zorc is the tool or enabler but being also partially human over just a manifestation of a concept like zorc (pure evil) he has more agency. It is not beneath him to plot or consider the protagonist a genuine threat so he will account for this in the story and make it interesting.
Fun fact, the Dark Master Zorc art is straight up copied from the manga in the ttrpg Monster World arc before duelist kingdom, and the dice mechanic on the card reflects the dice rolls of the game
For those using Sentence of Doom, for it to work with Destiny Board, you must place the Spirit Messages backwards. Other tech picks for the Necrofears and Cherubini package are: 1) Fiendish Rhino Warrior to mill your Necrofears or Dark Spirit monsters 2) Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss to get to Tour Guide or to set up your Dark Spirits 3) Terryfing Toddler of Torment for fiend milling such as setting up the others listed above
I think Sentence of Doom is badly designed. It should have been way more intuitive and just let it count as the next letter in the sequence instead of counting as the last letter.
@@enlongjones2394 we are playing Destiny Board, we always take the L, haha but yes, if you place a letter off from Sentence of Doom, think reverse order (LANIF), not the next letter in sequence. If you already have FINA, you can use it to place the last letter.

Yeah you could argue that Sentence of Doom should spell it from left to right like Destiny Board, but Destiny Board is already doing that for you. Spelling FINAL from the left and the right lets Destiny Board do it's thing while Sentence of Doom plays the last two letters (L then A and N) without you having to wait for Dettiny Board to place them.
Sentence of doom with battle fader is what do when am stalking out until the ouija board is complete. Another good strategy in Bakura’s deck is adding skill drain. All his monsters effect activate in the graveyard. Another good card is adding summon limit. It slows the pace down for your opponent
So, funny thing about the Spirit Message cards: They can be tributed. Which means that, for whatever reason you can't pull off the destiny board win con, you can tribute your special summoned spirit message cards for a variety of monsters. My personal favorite choices are the wicked gods, because of course.
You know Nova, you COULD create your own "NOVA INVITATIONAL" Card Tournament. Any participants would have to use the Deck's that have the NOVA scale on it. Heck, make it a Round Robin Series. It could be really fun to see how folk's build around your grading scale....
Dark Designator was played in the older game because there used to be a verification rule... if you play a search card and the target isn't there, you have to show your opponent that the card doesn't exist... basically, play Dark Designator, declare some tournament specific card that nobody would reasonably have in their deck then your opponent would have to show you their deck to confirm that they don't have that card. The rules were changed so that your opponent no longer has to do this, but back then this card allowed you to look at your opponents entire deck for major advantage in a match.
I always saw Bakuras core theme to be manipulation. Fiends have a lot of good effects to that end. This was before the Destiny board support so I axed those cards for space.
I love the destiny board stuff. It's a really cool and satisfying win condition. I really hope it gets more support to make it more consistent and grants more protection
Aside from tbe exchange play, another good card to use with dark designator is Mind Crush. If DD is successfully resolved that means you know at least one card in the opponent's hand so mind crush is also basically guaranteed to work and force your opponent to discard the card you just gave them.
In Duel Links the characters even comment on it and Bakura says that he loves cards based on their aesthetic and theme rather than how good they are. The creepier the card is the more he likes it.
Destiny Board, when used with the Dark Sanctuary and Dark Necrofear supports, is surprisingly easy to pull off in Master Duel. The opponent is either too preoccupied with dealing with Dark Curse/Necrofear which revives and cycles with the Dark Spirit hand traps or are so focused on the Destiny Board that they leave your floodgates and field hazards to build up that it becomes oppressive. The letters and Destiny Board can also be recycled so if you wanted to you can use the letters after they've been summoned as monsters by Dark Sanctuary to extra deck summon or link to make something silly like Apollusa and then using Dark Spirit Mastery in grave.
Honestly? My favorite Bakura Card would have to a tie between Morphing Jar and Man Eater Bug.(Who I am truly confused on WHY Weevil, the SO CALLED master of Insect Monsters, never used this admittingly VERY useful insect monster for his own deck.) Morphing Jar has been very useful in in Goat and Edison format to the point I'd probably consider running it in those formats to give me an option to get a new hand if I had a bad one or if I REALLY wanted to screw over my opponent's hand at the risk of their new hand being good, just to TRY getting a good hand myself. While Man Eater Bug is honestly a decent low level flip effect monster to have in GOAT format. No two ways about it, this thing was a life saver if you had to stare down a Blue Eyes White Dragon or Blue Eyes Ultimate.

Dark designator turn 1... declare a Garnet that your opponent might have. It being a Garnet means its probably useless in their hand. Not awesome but effective.
I think this could be a good series. Or even spawn off some what-ifery, Like if Bakura was in The GX, 5Ds, etc series and what kind of deck you(emphasis on the you) think he would have had. It's something I've been doing with the different characters in duel links, trying to craft decks that might play. It could be good discussion fodder at least. My Yugi dark magician exceeded deck pops off? Yugi wouldn't even had to resort to cheating if he appeared in that era 😂
man, it is so sad to see that destiny board, even with the "support from 5 years ago" is still unplayable. sure, it never should be a consistent threat, but at least make it so that in casual games you can actually win for once. seriously, the "support" we got was so bad, it barely changed the state the archetype is in. well, there is a need for packfiller crap so you don't get the good stuff.....
destiny board is a low key way to remove 2-3 cards from you deck, essentially a scuffed card draw at the worst circumstances. still most games are decided turn 2 or 3, when the archetype engine gets a boss negate out, or a athlete dunks you for 10000 lp.

Honestly I wish there was more horror themed archetypes in this game but at the very least all of bakuras stuff exists so I guess that's fine.

Dark Designator seems like a cute way to get Gem Knight Garnet out of the deck to screw over the opponent's brilliant fusion.
Bakura will always be my all time favorite yugioh character across all of the series,i might build this deck in MD for the spooks since its October

I’m not as impressed with Ha Des’s acting. He’s only really got one schtick: Hiw many different ways can you beat this guy up. Then he just gets some plaguespreader plot armor and comes back.

I think this could be a good series. Or even spawn off some what-ifery, Like if Bakura was in The GX, 5Ds, etc series and what kind of deck you(emphasis on the you) think he would have had. It's something I've been doing with the different characters in duel links, trying to craft decks that might play. It could be good discussion fodder at least.

man, it is so sad to see that destiny board, even with the "support from 5 years ago" is still unplayable. sure, it never should be a consistent threat, but at least make it so that in casual games you can actually win for once.
seriously, the "support" we got was so bad, it barely changed the state the archetype is in. well, there is a need for packfiller crap so you don't get the good stuff.....

destiny board is a low key way to remove 2-3 cards from you deck, essentially a scuffed card draw at the worst circumstances. still most games are decided turn 2 or 3, when the archetype engine gets a boss negate out, or a athlete dunks you for 10000 lp.
