Pentatonix's cover of Sound of Silence will floor you. Also, react to "Daft Punk."
      Home Free is an equally excellent Accapella group, who sing everything from country to pop, to sea shanties. (their base, Tim, has a great collab with Peter Hollins, called Misty Mountains). They do a great cover of "All about that bass" and the excellent, but funny, "Butts remix.";
And Voiceplay, who is nearly as good, if not as good. Their base, Geoff Castalucci, has a lot of singles out there, including "The Headless Horseman" and a cover of "16 tons." Their greatest song (in my opinion) is "The Oogie Boogie Song."

There is NO weak link in Pentatonix. Scott actually founded the group and was considered to be their primary leader in the early days (although this group has always considered themselves to be a five-way equal partnership). Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi (who took most of the lead here) and Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado (obviously the only girl in the group) began performing together in youth theater and school choirs as children growing up together in Arlington, Texas. While in high school, the three of them formed the basis of this a cappella group, originally called The Trio. After high school, Scott got them an audition for an a cappella TV singing contest show called The Sing Off based in Los Angeles, but found out they needed at least five members to be on the show. The bass singer Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (from Visalia, California) was brought in through a mutual friend. The beatboxer Kevin "KO" Olusola (from Kentucky) was found through one of his CZcams videos that had gone viral featuring him "cello-boxing" (a term he himself coined), which is playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time. Kevin arrived on the scene literally the day before their audition, which they passed. After spending a few weeks back in Arlington getting to know each other, they returned to California to perform on the Sing Off for the 2011 season, which they ended up winning. The win landed them a recording contract with Sony on their Epic Records label, but the Epic people pulled out just a few days later because they didn't believe an a cappella group would sell records. The group decided to stay together and began making a name for themselves by recording their own music and releasing it as CZcams videos. In the summer of 2012, realizing that the group was building up a huge CZcams following, Sony relented and brought them back with a contract on their smaller Mountain Gate Records label. The group released three EPs on Mountain Gate over the next 18 months, until their Daft Punk Medley suddenly went super-viral on CZcams, the single became a world-wide hit, and they won a Grammy for it. Sony then moved them up to their top label RCA, and the rest is history...two more Grammys, several Billboard #1 albums, and multi-platinum record sales and sold-out concert tours. The hectic touring and recording schedule finally got to be too much for Avi, and he announced his departure at the end of the 2017 summer tour. New bass singer Matt Sallee joined in early 2018. After taking a year away from the music business, Avi later launched his own solo career.

This group has been together for 10 years now Scott, Kirstin, and Mitch went to high school together and formed a trio. After graduation, Scott formed Pentatonix with Mitch, Kirstin, Avi (Bass), and Kevin (Beatboxer, Cello, Vocal) to compete in the 3rd season of Sing Off. They won and have been performing ever since. In 2017, Avi left and was replaced by Matt. All of the others are original although Mitch and Kirstin are constantly changing their looks.

I enjoy Scott very much as well but everyone is entitled to an opinion. Also take into consideration the fact that the two songs heard so far don't really feature Scott. Reckyj isn't suggesting Scott is a weak singer, but just that the others have appeared stronger to date in his experience. Pentatonix allows each of its members to shine in prominent roles depending upon the needs of a given song, but from a traditional point of view, Scott would be considered the "lead singer" overall. The fact that he shares the spotlight with his friends and is delighted when they are praised just makes him more awesome in my opinion.

That bass is the original basso profundo Avi Kaplan. Pronounced AAhh Vee. He is my all time favorite. I hear his warm bass over everyone else. Aside from some Mitch(the lead in this one and the counter tenor). lol Actually Mitch and Avi's voices compliment one another's very well. Avi is the foundation. Avi left the band in 2017 on good terms for family health reasons and personal matters. He has a fantastic solo career now that leans toward folk genre. Avi helped the band find his replacement Matt Sallee. Everything this band does is golden. They make each cover their own and they have amazing originals as well. Please start with their older music (like this one) first so that you can get to know the members better and understand where they started and how they got where they are today. You will not be disappointed. Please listen to Hallelujah the video. It has well over 600 million views. They also have a live version you should watch after, will blow your mind. Its on their Christmas Special 2016. Scott Hoying (tall blonde) has a voice that is like honey, very soulful. You dont hear him much in this one. The trio Kirstie Maldonado(mezzo soprano), Mitch Grassi (lead singer in this one and voice that is not from this world) and Scott Hoying (baritone) grew up together in Texas. Scott wanted to compete in a tv singing competition called the sing off. They found Avi through his reputation and friend of a friend, then saw Kevin Olusola (beat boxer extraordinaire and celloist) on you tube and brought him on board as well. All came together for this competition. They've an amazing story. Imagine is another super cover. They won 3 Grammy awards in their earlier years with Avi. Daft Punk is the first Grammy. That is another definite must watch. Thank you for the reaction. I hope you will take the journey. PTX has some great fans (Pentaholics) and they will support you.

Great reaction! The disbelief on your face at this awesome a capella rendition was fun to watch.
To answer your first question: The bass singer is the dark-haired bearded guy who at the beginning of the video sat on the bottom left of the couch. His name is Avi and he is a classical trained basso profundo.
As how they met: The three sitting on the back of the couch - Kirstin "Kirstie" (rhymes with thirsty), Mitch (who sang the lead) and Scott (the blond guy) - have grown up together in Arlington, Texas. They went to the same school, sang together in choir and performed together in community plays. They formed The Trio and performed an a capella rendition of Telephone by Lady Gaga during a choir performance (czcams.com/video/t2XBMWRK4Mw/video.html). After graduating high school, Scott went to University of Southern California where he met and befriended Ben Bram who worked on a show called The Sing-Off (a competition show for a capella groups). Scott got the idea to try out for this show and contacted Kirstie (who at that time was at college in Oklahoma) and Mitch (who was finishing his senior year, he's a year younger than Scott and Kirstie). However, for the show, they needed at least 5 people, and Ben recommended adding a beatboxer and bass singer. They found Avi through a friend of a friend; Avi already had a great repution as bass singer. Kevin they found through one of his youtube videos where he played cello while at the same time beatboxing (he coined that celloboxing) and which had gone viral. The five met in person for the first time a day before the audition and noticed during the day-long practice that this really could work out.
They got into the show and eventually won season 3, earning themselves $200,000 and a Sony record contract. The label soon dropped them, however, because they didn't believe a capella could be marketed. Pentatonix decided to make it work by publishing videos on youtube. Some of their covers went viral so they eventually got another record contract. Ten years and three grammy wins later they performed various sold-out world tours, had three Christmas specials on NBC and are still going strong. Just this February they released their second full original album.
In all those ten years, there's only been one member change: In 2017, Avi stepped back due to personal issues (burnout and his mom had been diagnosed with cancer, she's fine now though). They soon found Matt who officially joined PTX in early 2018 and has been with them since then.
They're all very talented individuals and have personal side projects (with videos on their own youtube channels), but together they create this amazing whole that sure must have been fated. No matter what they touch, it's spectacular. You cannot go wrong with whatever you choose to react to.
I believe you already got a ton of requests for more reactions, but do check out the following: Daft Punk (their first grammy win), Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (second grammy win), Jolene (duet with Dolly Parton, their third grammy win), Sound of Silence, and definitely Hallelujah (their most viewed video to date and with reason). For original work: if you like Daft Punk, do Love Again which as a similar vibe, Sing and Run To You.
Welcome to the very deep Pentatonix rabbit hole. Looking forward to joining you on your discovery journey. :)

Also, Avi Kaplan has established a solo career, and already has an impressive catalog of original music (some under the name Avriel & The Sequoias, done before he left PTX). There is not a half-assed song in that catalog. Most reactors start with his most successful song thus far - "Change on the Rise". When you watch and listen to it, keep in mind that he does all the vocals and sounds (except for a bit of organ and tambourine in the bridge). They kinda found each other and hit the ground running, yeah. Scott, Mitch and Kirstie knew each other from high school. Scott heard about the Sing Off (a reality show/competition similar to The Voice, but for acapella groups) and he was told the minimum no. of members needed to get in was five. They found Avi (the bass) through a friend of a friend, and Kevin (the beatboxer) through one of his CZcams videos where he plays cello and beatboxes at the same time. They met for the first time the day before they were to audition and they got in.
Halfway through the show, it was clear Pentatonix had an edge the rest of the groups didn't. Even being only five people, they sounded cohesive and full, they kept surprising everyone with clever arrangements and improving week to week.
They won. The prizes were money and a record contract.
But a week after moving to LA, the label dropped them because they didn't think they could market acapella music. So they started to record their own stuff and uploading it to CZcams. In 2013, they did a Daft Punk medley that, deservedly, went viral (the audio was recorded in a closet and the video was shot in the kitchen of the apartment Avi and Kevin shared, with a $400 budget...it still sounds like a million bucks).
That medley won them their first Grammy and a record deal with RCA.

A brief introduction to Pentatonix (aka PTX):
A five member acapella (no instrument) group formed in 2011.
They sing covers of pop songs and have several Christmas albums in their catalog.
They've also put out two albums of original material, one just released February 12, 2021 (The Lucky Ones).
The original five band members were Scott, Kirstin (Kirstie), Mitch, Kevin and Avi.
Scott, Kirstin and Mitch knew each other from high school. They formed the group in 2011, adding Avi (bass) and Kevin (beatboxer).
They auditioned, competed and won season 3 of the television show The Sing-Off.
They've also won multiple awards over the years including three Grammys.
While viewing PTX videos spanning a decade, it may appear that there has been several personel changes due to their ever-changing appearances, Kirstin and Mitch in particular. The fact is; only one member has changed.
Of the five original members, four are still in the group. Avi left the group in 2017 and was replaced with Matt.
While acappella since forming the group, they occasionally introduce instruments such as piano (played by Scott) and cello (played by Kevin). They've also included vocals and instrumentals played by featured guests.
Most of their 'instrumental' sounds however, are created by Kevin, their very talented beatboxer along with baselines performed by Avi, Matt and Scott.
While performing together as a five-member group, they also have individual works worth investigating.
There's so much more information 'Penta-holics' can add to this list. Just ask and they will respond. Enjoy!

You will learn over time as you review more and more, that every single member of the group is phenomenally talented and each leads at the appropriate time. Not bad for three kids who all went to the same high school and the two others who joined to become PTX, huh?

This is how the "band" formed....the three singers (Scott, Kirstie, Mitch) have been best friends since they were 8-9 nine year olds and were known through high school as the Trio and in the school singers. After graduation, they went separate ways until Scott wanted to audition for the Sing Off TV Show in 2011 (Acapella competition). A good friend said that the would need a good Bass (Avi) who was recommended by the friend and a beatboxer (whom Scott found on the internet). The day before their 1st audition for the show, they all met together for the FIRST time !! The rest is history...although there is more to this amazing story !!
Just to see how far they've come...check out their latest recording video which came out just this past month ("90s Dancing Medley", which is solely Acapella)....AMAZING !!

I don’t really think there is a “weakest” member in ptx. They all have things they excel at, but they can do pretty much anything.
As for Scott - he’s definitely the most versatile. Firstly he’s got a huge vocal range (bass - baritone- tenor), but his voice also suits so many styles. He’s also the most soulful singer of the group by far.
Add to that the fact that he’s the founder of the group, the most ambitious and one of the ones who does most of the arrangements - “weak” does not describe him in any way!

Scott will change your mind if you listen to "Sounds of Silence" or the Leonard Cohen "Hallelujah." And if you want to REALLY go down the rabbit hole, take a quick listen to their "Daft Punk" medley, which won them a Grammy (their first of three). An a capella group covering electro-pop will blow your mind.
You asked about bass - that is Avi, with the beard and mustache. IN 2017, he had to leave the group for family reasons - but it was amicable so he helped his band mates find his replacement bass, Matt. Matt is no slouch either.
How did they get together? Scott (primarily baritone), Mitch (counter-tenor), and Kirsie (mezzo-soprano) were in high school together. There was a competition series for a capella, called The Sing Off, but they needed a minimum of five members. They found Avi (bass) and Kevin (beat-boxer, tenor, and sometimes cellist) to enter season 3 of that show. They won and have been together for 10 years now (except for the change for Avi).

"Daft Punk", "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy" and "Jolene" are the three songs they won Grammys for. For covers try "Sound of Silence" (Simon and Garfunkle), "Hallelujah" (Leonard Cohen), and "Imagine" (John Lennon). For original pieces I recommend "Sing", "Happy Now", or "Love Again". Oh and just so you don't get confused on future reactions, there has only been one member change in the almost 10 years they have been together.

He knows who sounds best in which part and plays to the groups strengths. I also think he has been trying to pull away from the "leader" position because they agreed from the start no egos.
3 of them (the trio) knew each other in middle school and high-school. When Scott learned about the Sing off he recruited them and another friend of his pulled in mutual (Bass) friend Avi. They found the beatboxer on CZcams

They are aliens sent from above! Each one is brilliantly talented with more than one gift! They can sing any genre, any cover, great at medleys, mash-ups or originals written by them. They all have a voice range which is surprising at times. Kevin the beatboxer, is a master at looping, cello and invented the cello-boxing, sax, played Carnegie Hall with both instruments, speaks fluent Mandarin, and was pre-med at the time he joined this group, Check out his YT channel KOver, (the cover of Down). Avi the bass studied opera @ San Antonio College, a capello and choral. He has his own YT channel as well, Avi Kaplan, check out his Change on the Rise. He quit the group in 2017 due to serious family illness and the tour dates was too much when trying to spend as time with the family as possible. Matt Sallee was his replacement bass and does awesome beatboxing with Kevin. Then we have the original trio: Kirsti (rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, studied 4 part harmonies in Oklah., Scott Hoying, baritone, songwriter, arranger, and musician and plays piano. Mitch Grassi the high pitched voice, famously known, all grew up in Arlington, Tx. and knew one another since around 8 yrs. old. They sang in choir and were friends. (Mitch and Scott's YT channel carries their famous Superfruit episodes.) The trio wanted to try out for The Sing-Off reality show competition but needed at least 2 more in the group. They found Kevin from a YT post and they called him. Avi was found by a friend of Scott. They got together the day before their 1st appearance on the show, went on to win season 3. Worth checking out the performances on YT. Shows how far they have come...Been together all this time.

Just because I do not agree with any particular reactor that does not give Me the right to cast aside their feelings And opinions. Opinions are neither right nor wrong they just are and as such have every right to exist as is. So once again please accept my sincere apology. I wish you the best with your channel

There is no need for any apology. A devoted fan has a big heart for the band/team or what ever it is. I am a huge fan of the footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and when people say bad things about him I react in a very bad way. My reactions is based on me. How I see things and how I react to them. And trust me, I very well aware of the stupid things I say. So don’t get bothered with it, since it has a tendency to slap me in my face. So stick around, you seem like a fan, and I value you as a viewer. The support from you guys has been amazing. I’m sorry for my comment. But I can assure you, that’s who I am. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s not. But I’m not a bad person, I’m just everywhere with my thoughts during the time I react. Thank you for your kind words. Stay safe and take super good care of you dogs. I love dogs. /Recky

That's very kind of you. I'm still very upset at myself. I live my life according to 12 spiritual principles and number 10 says after a review of my actions or the day if I feel that I was wrong then I need to make an amends. I understand where you're coming from cuz that's where I was coming from once again thank you for your words I will take them to heart and work on forgiving myself

I love PTX, and I don't have a problem with someone saying "Oh, _______ is my favorite!" But I don't get why the need to point out who is "the weakest." Wow, unnecessary. I get that your reaction was in the moment, not thinking ahead. Others have already pointed out that Scott is a brilliant vocalist and PTX would not exist if not for him (it was his brainchild). One of the best examples of Scott's talent is a duet he did with Rozzie Crane called Lose Us. OMG the falsetto and the soulful, bluesy quality of his voice is beautiful. czcams.com/video/4SfJwL2od6g/video.html

Scott as the weakest? Scott is generally a baritone, but here is singing a tenor lead and when the bass (Avi) has a lead, he covers bass. Try that.
Plus he has the best "gritty" vocal ability of the group. He was also the core of the low guitar solo sound.
Granted, his voice is probably the least appropriate for most lead work in Bohemian versus Mitch or Kirstin, until you need the grit, which they did at that point. Freddy Mercury had a lot of aspects to his voice, so the group has to kick in all their talents to pull it off. Excellent reaction and review!

😵👎 Saying that Scott (tall blonde guy) is weak WTF? Scott is EXTREMELY TALENTED as they ALL ARE!! this is you're second video and you're saying this???
Scott is the KING of riffs and runs, is a vocal chameleon, covers bass when the bass has a lead, hits HIGH falsettos does complicated harmonies has vocal endurance.
This is your "SECOND" PENTATONIX video *I'M HOLDING OFF ON SUBBING, SHARING ECT....*😒👎

Sorry, but Mich does not need a megaphone, it's just a prop. Watch them all in a live concert where Mitch does not use one. Mich does the electric guitar and Kevin (along with some help from Avi) on the drums and sounds effects. czcams.com/video/xELVHG6hYxk/video.html BTW, you need to hear Sound of Silence where Scott is definitely not the weakest link or Mary Did You Know.
