  • Lets have a look at the very creative and unusual coinage of Emperor Probus, who left us a numismatic legacy full of diversity and collectible types. We're going through each of the mints and evaluating its stylistic differences.

Beautiful coins. Probus did mint some spectacular pieces of art. I myself am proud to own handful of his coins including a rare Ticinum Consular bust type with COS II in the obverse legend.

I remember about 15 years ago that someone came into the market and started buying up all the good Probus coins that were available. I mean everything from the major dealers, everything on Vcoins, everything in the big auctions, even everything on eBay--they hoovered them up and outbid everyone else. Rumor was they were preparing a reference book of Probus coinage, maybe an updated volume of RIC. I never did hear who it was for sure, but everytime I see a good Probus coin it pops into my mind.

great video - As Always! Interesting that you mention the Lungdunum coins having thin features.. because the Antoninianus I own shows Mars with a little beer belly... besides the thin legs & arms...

I've always had a soft spot for Probus largely because of his memorable provincial Egyptian issues--big lovely ponderously thick, almost classically "Greek-looking", things. Egypt, even under Roman rule, maintained its own distinct type of currencies and coinage on the old Ptolemaic Macedonian model. Probus' issues in particular were memorably fine. I'm surprised you didn't feature one in this episode. Maybe you'll get around to those Egyptian billon issues some day. In the meantime, I'm gonna rummage through your back catalog for that earlier Probus episode you mention.

15:10 One theory is that the mint of Tripolis might not have been the same Tripolis as in Syria, it was a common name afterall, and could have been the one in Phrygia. Not my theory but that of archaeologist "F. Redö"

One of my favorite coins is an antninionus of Probus. The silvering is long gone but in its place is an oxblood patina, the red coloring really highlights the features well.

As my very first Roman (Ancient) coin, Probus' one has to be one of most underrated/undervalued one considering its abundance and quality design.

Very good video. Probus coins are always so intricate and unique :) . I love the shields !
I hope in future you can do a video of the coinage of the last few emperors of Rome, I recently acquired a half-siliqua of Majorian (romes last great emperor) but have struggled to find any information on it

Hi, just a small note at minute 4:19. The mint of Ticinum is way to the west compared to the map you showed. (I just know because I'm from the modern day Ticinum )

I found a coin that seems to be quite old, but I don’t know how to find out exactly how old. This is way outside my area of expertise. Can any of you knowledgeable persons help me. I have photos to show. Thank you.
