  • New Zealand will ban the sale of tobacco to its next generation, in a bid to eventually phase out smoking.
Anyone born after 2008 will not be able to buy cigarettes or tobacco products in their lifetime, under a law expected to be enacted next year.
"We want to make sure young people never start smoking," Health Minister Dr Ayesha Verall said.
The move is part of a sweeping crackdown on smoking announced by New Zealand's health ministry on Thursday.
Doctors and other health experts in the country have welcomed the "world-leading" reforms, which will reduce access to tobacco and restrict nicotine levels in cigarettes.

Just a note to the journalist calling smoking a “habit” : smoking is not a habit. I go to the cinema every week as a habit but if I have to miss one week I will not start sweating, become irritable and panic. Smoking is an addiction.

Well said. My husband went over to vape to stop smoking cigarettes and then he had to wean himself from nicotine. That took him a good 7 years, he could not go cold turkey it didn't work. He still vapes, nicotine free, but he has to suck on something like a dummy, that has become a habit. It's definitely a physical and a mental addiction.

I only smoke at work (too stressfull :P) but never take them home, so I can control the habit. The weekends I skip easily.
After been addicted for quite some time, I slowly took control from making it an addiction, to a habit, to a escape from work.

This is a myth. Who told you this?
Alcohol for instance. A pregnant mother can pass off the effects of drinking to the baby, in a thing called FAS or fetal alcohol syndrome.
Alcohol can lead to car crashes with multiple injuries or death. I won't tell you the effects that alcohol had on my family but i assure it isn't merely anecdotal.
There are millions of people effected by alcohol that aren't directly using it.
That's just alcohol. I could point out the side effects of any of those other things that could harm others adjacent to their use but why bother?

Theres a good response to this. It's that NZ is not prohibiting cigarrettes for the current generation. No one who is already addicted to it should object that their children can no longer get addicted to cigarretes. It is prohibiting it for those who come after. Also they have not banned nicotine which is the key addictive material, only a deadly and cancerous delivery system of nicotine. You don't ban cigarettes. Instead, you ask why people are smoking. Mostly it's because they're stressed all the time from working. So a stressful job is the problem. Why are there stressful jobs? Because humans are living unnatural lives, working extremely hard to maintain and build a complex, precarious civilization (a modern day Tower of Babel). So the organization of society around the task of building an advanced high-tech industrial civilization is obviously the root cause of people's smoking addictions. It's therefore pretty obvious what needs to be eliminated to eradicate this problem - modern-day civilization.

Being able to control my thoughts & emotions I can now relax in numerous other ways that actually benefit my life.

      @michaelheliotis5279 Před 2 lety +4

Yes, I can't fathom the absolute madness that would lead a government to pass a law that's remotely beneficial to society! (Sarcasm, by the way.) In all seriousness though, the slippery slope is a logical fallacy perpetuated by conservatives in order to villainise legislation that they oppose, and it's especially fallacious here given that enforcing a law under the guise of it being beneficial to society or the country is a door that was opened millennia ago when the idea of government was first instituted. _All_ laws in a society that claims to be free are passed under such a guise (whether or not the society is indeed free or the law beneficial), as it's the only justification for curtailing individual liberty in such a society. And whether that's done without consultation or opposition is up to the individual government and the systems that establish them.
In New Zealand, the select committee process indeed involves extensive consultation with the general public, often returning bills to parliament with changes based on public urgings, and the parliamentry process affords elected representatives the opportunity to oppose or even prevent a bill should they have the numbers, which in this case they very much don't. A government that restrains itself from passing popular and beneficial laws out of fear that a future government will use that as justification to pass popular and beneficial laws isn't actually a government, nor is it governing. And if the fear is that a future government will use the current law as justification to pass an unpopular and non-beneficial law, then the issue isn't with the current law, it's with the political system or cultural mindset that would allow such an unpopular and non-beneficial law to be passed in the first place (or second place, as it were).

There's a bit of a difference between alcohol and cigarettes sure they both harm the user but, there is only one that can harm the health of others with producing harmful second hand smoke.

NZ is already enforcing extremely harsh import restrictions on biomatter. Getting tobacco (biomatter) past customs in any meaningful quantity wont be easy. And its not a nicotine ban. People who just want a nicotine fix will have cheaper legal options.

The family Bible my grandmother had included a page inside the front cover decorated with a pledge she signed when she joined The Women's Temperance Union, when prohibition against drinking alcohol was the law of the land in America. A noble cause, yet, doomed to failure. Best wishes, New Zealand, on your noble experiment.
