Since you cant see anything in the dark you are just alone in the cold with nothing else to do than think about how cold it is and how many time theres left untill your shift is over. Somehow one of my squadmates left his bag of nuts in the observation point and due to the boringness i ate all of his nuts :D Good memories

JudoMMA1 in the U.S. it's kinda dumb for a sniper in the army too wear body armour because it restricts your movements and what is body armour good for if it can only stop a 7.62 round there's so many weapons of higher caliber that'll go through it and kill guy
Body armor cost a lot of money. I assume that since he is on a reserve status he isn't issued body armor. I know the US Army National Guard doesn't issue out "Plates" for there armor unless they are deploying. Active duty gets issued body armor and plates. If you noticed in one of his live fire exercises one of his instructors was wearing body armor.
In the OTC UK military we where told to we should only put on warm clothes if we know we will be stationary for more than 20mins.... otherwise like you said if you need to move out fast you will heat up way to fast, and in a real combat situation you may not be able to stop and take it off.

40 minutes of sleep on an operation is a luxury. lol. I spent three days, eyes open in Iraq before I got to sleep. Before the war I did operations to counter the trafficking of drugs into my country. Those missions were also very low on sleep time. the more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in war.
