Monky London car reviews are back, reporting all the way from Mexico. Street drifting is bad kids even in Mexico, don't be like John. In this video we were sent we see a Nissan Laurel drift car powered by a RB30DET Skyline motor! 3.0L Nissan Patrol bottom end with a Nissan Skyline RB26DET head. Same as what you find in a R32 GTR, R33 GTR and R34 GTR only with a 3.0L motor instead of a 2.6L. This one Skyline motor swap drift car build you don't want to miss!

The Nissan Laurel is a front-engine, rear-drive two- and four-door sedan manufactured and marketed by Nissan from 1969 to 2002. Introduced in 1968 as a new model positioned above the 1968 Datsun Bluebird 510, the Laurel offered the luxury of the Nissan Cedric 130 in a smaller size. The laurel is a noble tree in Greek mythology, and the laurel wreath a symbol of honorable status. In Japan, the Laurel was not marketed as a Datsun, being always labeled as a Nissan.
The first Laurel was developed by the Nissan Tsurumi R&D Division and assembled at the Musashimurayama Plant of the former Prince Motor Company in 2-door and 4-door variants. Released as a Nissan after Prince merged with Nissan, Laurels shared many components and architectures with the Skyline range. The Laurel was not marketed new in Japan at Nissan Prince Shop locations that sold the Skyline and Gloria, former Prince products. Instead the Laurel was sold at Nissan Motor Shop as the junior model to the larger V8-powered Nissan President.
Since 1968, eight generations of Laurel have been produced in Japan. Nissan intermittently listed the Laurel for sale in various Asian and European markets (it was also sold in Chile and Panama, as the Datsun Laurel, starting in the late seventies), and then discontinued the export of this model from 1989.
The Laurel was cancelled subsequent to Nissan's alliance with Renault.
In December 1988, the C33 Laurel was announced. A month later, in January 1989, the C33 went on sale, originally only available as a hardtop four-door. The base engine offering again was a 1.8-litre four, the available options consisted of a 2-litre six (SOHC, DOHC or DOHC Turbo) and a 2.8-litre diesel inline-six. Early in 1991 a DOHC 2.5-litre inline-six coupled to a five-speed automatic became available.
Nissan Laurel Medalist in Japan
The Nissan Laurel used a rear-wheel drive layout, making it a popular car to modify for drifting use. The C33 in particular is very popular as a drift car, because it has the same floor plan as the Nissan A31 Cefiro and the four-door Nissan Skyline R32. They also have many interchangeable parts which makes them ideal for modification. Suspension parts are identical to the Nissan Silvia S13 model.
The Toyota competitor was the Cresta, and there was also the new Honda Inspire in the same segment. The Laurel was repositioned slightly higher as a larger luxury sedan, as its exterior dimensions matched with the Nissan Cedric and Nissan Gloria which were exclusive to separate Japanese Nissan dealerships (Nissan Bluebird for the Cedric, Nissan Prince for the Gloria). The Laurel still remained the junior sedan to the Nissan flagship Nissan President which was all new in 1989, and remained exclusive to Japanese dealership Nissan Motor Store locations.
Trim levels included the Medalist, Medalist Club S and Gran Limited. The Club S was the only C33 laurel with the RB25DE option and a front lip spoiler, with other models offering only the RB20, CA18 and RD28 engines. Nom

The RB30E is actually mostly found in the export market R31 Skyline and Holden VL Commodre. They were sold in some Patrols, but most engines these days are sourced from R31s.
If you're thinking about making an RB30DET. You can use a 25 or 26 head. But not a 20. Incidentally the engine can take boost perfectly fine in it's stock SOHC form. And the extra responsiveness from the DOHC head swap is actually pretty easy to offset with larger injectors and a turbo. RB30ETs are rock solid and there are set ups out there pushing four figures at the crank using stock internals.

@@monkylondon yep. OCE indeed. The export market for RB30s has become quite a big deal here. When you can pull them from a junkyard for about $300 AU and sell them overseas for 2 Grand profit once you cover shipping, there's a good trickle of demand for them.
South Africa and parts of the middle East also got the R31. The Passage in Japan used RB20 engines and CA20s.
For anyone reading this thread and getting a complusion to learn more about RB30Es. Haltech did a good engine break down on it as part of a comparison series between it, the 2JZ, and the Barra. But there's a channel called Leprechaun Lab that is one of the true gods of RB30 tuning. They have some of the best and detailed info on the ins and outs of what is honestly just a workhorse daily drive motor until you start forcing more air into it's gullet.

Awesome cars! Im from NZ where Laurels and cefiros are very popular but yet hard to find in nice condition! They were nissans more luxury breed of the cefiro with suade on the dash the rare clock by aircon, and the pillarless feature which makes them so nice, but the con with them is you need to braced them good for drifting as the center of the car can flex quite alot due to lack of bracing, awesome lorry though man! Been a big fan for about 3 years now keep up the awesome work man! Much Love from New Zealand

Yeah monkey here down under the rb30 came in 3 cars the Nissan patrol which I think came with a diesel rb30 and the petrol rb30 came in the Aussie spec r31 skyline and the holden VL commodore which came with an na and a turbo rb30 the VL was the only car available with the turbo rb30 to my knowledge. Anyway cheers love the video

RB 30 dets have that unique sound compared to 20 ,25 dets ,its deeper more primal,i had a 25det C33 and mate had 30 det in his cef and it had that better sound over my 25 det and basically with the same hot and cold sides,cant beat displacement,Hi from New Zealand
