- A short overview of the Marketisation process discussed by New right thinkers Chubb & Moe.
A significant feature of the Education reform act 1988 - Marketisation linked with a number of features of the policy (e.g. national curriculum, OFSTED, Funding formula & League tables).

Wouldn’t make more sense to fund the schools that need it more? If government funds were used to get all the schools to the best standards?
Completely! I think the closest we got to that was the initial introduction of academies. As well as some labour policies such as EAZ’s, aim higher (policies like EMA & Sure start also provided additional support to communities). When first introduced they gave schools more control over how to spend their budgets.
Hi Alan, this was v helpful but I was wondering - why / how does the school get more funding as it moves up the league table?
As a school moved up the league table it becomes more desirable to parent to send their children to. The larger the number of students, the more money a school can claim. From 1988 funding to individual schools was based on how many pupils enrolled in that school. As a result undersubscribed or unpopular schools where fewer parents chose to send their children would decrease in size and funding. This could possibly close and become a sink school. While an oversubscribed school could expand / grow, take on more students and increase its funding.
