There's nothing like the ROAR of a 1979 Yamaha YZ 250!

It literally looks like you just drove straight from heaven
These old bikes bring me back to my childhood. My first bike was a early 80s kx80 then got a 85 cr125r. My last bike was a 2000 kx250, loved all of them.
What a trip, I had all of the same bikes as you, same years and everything, my first bike was a KX 80 love that thing!
@@seanbirkhofer4950 nice. The kx80 gave me my first experience of blowing up....multiple times lol.
I had an 84 yz80 I had running for about 10 mins ,but that was the best 10min bike I ever had.
What a hassle ,I got it and somebody installed the piston wrong, and the circlip gouged the bore.
It was .040 over so I took it to .060.
Took me a good month,I was only like 13 and barely knew anything.
Anyways ,get it back together and ride around the front of the house.
Felt great ,let's take a wot blast up the road.
Got up to top gear, it was pulling hard and poofffffff hole in the piston.
Damn crank seals.
I ended up selling it off and putting my time in something else, stripped down 78 kz650 4 cylinder for my dirt bike.
Might have not been as nimble in the woods as my buddies CR's and KX's, but boy would that thing throw a 40' rooster tail with that knobby I put on.
Total invested in that bike was 75$.
It was in the early 80s I got my first sponsorship along with my pal who arranged it as I've been begging my boss at the Honda shop to sell me and Elsinore forever and she said oh no you'll get hurt racing those things and you're my only goldwing mechanic which was true as it was a real that if you wanted to keep your Honda franchise you will send someone to school to become an authorized goldwing technician as I was... But my best talking buddy who's a motorcycle salesman came to work one day and yippee in less than a week I had three crates to undo and put together a brand new 480 a brand new 250 and a brand new 125 and we were off to the races.... And I was exciting time best time I ever had in my life to date.... Unless most people know that seems like the winners get passed around as it wasn't Honda's turn to win on a 125 but we had just acquired this Suzuki franchise which was the first year for the water kills RM 125 and talk about a beast... Pulling the whole shot in second gear sound like a 250.... Kind of late in life for us as both of us were over 30 so I got the wise idea to enter that RM 125 water pump in the 30 plus open class and pissed off a whole bunch of guys on big bikes Moto after Moto it was a slaughter I ended up with third overall and the aliana supercross championship on a damn 125... That was a hoot to ride power of a 250 and handle like a BMX bicycle.. allowing you to do all kinds of stupid stunts between doubles no troubles... As our tracks was just being up to wind out a 125 when the big bikes opens are looking for real estate to open it up they're hitting the brakes and I'm passing on in the turns.. and of course like all amateur racing you know exactly who's going to be in front who's going to be in the last of a group of the same guys every weekend that's sort of broke your spirits and they were barely on the pipe knowing that I'm going to lap them. Except and here comes the reason why I haven't finished third in the championship and two guys in particular we're not so submissive being two Factory riders for team Kawasaki on kx250s that were one off Kawasaki works Factory bikes tricked out with all kind of go fast gadgets... Went to the fastest pro riders ever.. Gene Ramsey who still owns and runs Lincoln trail Motocross park and Gary peak who went on into The national competition of 30 plus open class and I'm not sure but he finished at least in the top five in the nation anyway these boys were tough and it was strategy to get in front of them on that little 125
. And then at the Marshall Illinois fairgrounds where we had built a motocross track with tri-axle dump trucks of dirt piled up we had a series of a left right left berm that was about three and a half 4 ft tall to the top and Jean and Gary Tangled handlebars as they got the whole shot on me and here I come and they were furious one of them Heather left handlebar to the spokes of the other and it was going to be a minute before they got done so I gently roosted them of course and that was the last lap and I'm looking at the checkered flag and then I hear This ferocious brap and it's Gary I got untangled first and here he comes I'm topped out on the Suzuki and he's shifting gears and catching me and not more than probably 25 yards from the checkered flag I did the ultimate no no I turned my head to the left and once Gary blow past me like I was parked and my buddy team member I look forward and he grabbed his face and bent over in a vivid shaking of his head no oooooo. As I had no excuse and have told many of students when you see that checkered flag never absolutely not ever turn your head to look at the competition as you want to because guess what happens your duck bill on your helmet catches air like a sail that feels like it's going to tear your head off and so you grip the grips and panic and that translates to like hitting a brick wall to your bike especially little 125 it doesn't take nothing to slow them down 10 mile an hour just by hitting gusts winds on a windy day ... And this day was even worse as it cost me the championship as soon as the season it was nip and tuckI didn't win every Moto of course.... And battling the roosts of two Kawasaki KX250 Factory team bikes took that was a hell of a crowd pleaser Kept them on the edge of their seats well the RM 125 passed the Kawasaki KX 250 Factory bike maybe maybe not mostly not but way more fun than anything else you can do with your clothes on.. and being a 30 plus Rider and a real says that you can drop back into the b class also of any size bike so I'd run the RM 125 in the old man's class and the 125b class that was for motos and then in the open b class I'd ride the 480 that's six miles a day... And Brad my teammate ran the semi-pro open Semi-Pro 250 Semi-Pro 125 ... That made it kind of close sharing those motorcycles between races has no sugar what I come sliding in past the checker Brad be grabbing the bike and heading up to the line for the 125 pro as if you're wanting to see how tough that new RM waterfield was would have been one hell of a documented video s*** got beat up and beat up and put away wet and at the end of the season the 125 ended up in little pieces but it was a true trooper like I starship trooper with those big bugs eating it... The Honda cr480r was a different story I never even had to pull the head off of it which I should have to look in just to see that second was humming all the time I didn't even clean the carburetor on it all year but we put fresh air filters on every Moto takes an extra minute but sure better than you dusted it .
And the CR250R Honda halfway through the season we put the first over 0.25 mm Honda Pennsylvania and it made the rest of the season no problem beating the piss out of every weekend with several back-to-back motors on Long holiday weekends... Then Brad dropped his Pro license so he can jump into the 30 plus which is open class for b riders and him and some of the other Moto warriors he knew went to Daytona to ride the national 30-plus class and I went along this tuner and gave our homeboys a port and polish job and rejetted it all their carbs that made them all feel 10 ft tall and bulletproof and headed to the wars at Daytona motor speedway.... And all got spanked like a bunch of whipped pups.... Just because the pros get older drop their license and go into the wussy class they all forgot how to slow down and only was faster..
Brad my buddy who was notoriously known around here for first out of the gate as in Daytona got run over 22 times and put it back in 20th place.. so reminds me of the Indianapolis Hoosier down under The lights surround sound system blasting out your ears as Jeremy McGrath pulls a wheelie on to the stage followed by Kevin Windham pulling a stoppie on the stage and sending his rear tire right down by Jeremy's toe and The crowd goes wild as 50,000 people are singing to the rap of Queen. You got mud on your face a big disgrace somebody's going to put you back in your place we will we will rock you boom boom we Will Rock You rock you

Haven't heard anything like that since yesterday
Yes, in the mid-late seventies - Maico 250. “The sound of Power.”
This too, by the way.
Love a 2-stroke! Glad to see the old girl is still up and running! 🍻
Still?? You think that things never been rebuilt? Most likely it's probably on its second or third rebuild. The two strokes are really cheap to rebuild. Every so often it's really a good idea to rering them every 4 years
@@dansavka7648 😐
@@dansavka7648 Yeah I've had plenty. I'm just saying it's good to see it up and running instead of the guy riding a modern day 4 stroke. 🍻
It sounds like a chainsaw
So much hate and I don't understand why, nice bike man! Love the way those old 2 strokes light up the rear tire.
Ya, I'll never understand why people are the way they are LoL! We put Shinko 520A tires on it which are very hard compound because we ride mostly on gravel here and they wont wear quickly but then the rear tire spins more easily. In sand though, they really bite and it will want to go over backwards when it hits powerband if you're not careful! Thanks!

Wow what memories.
Those bikes were badass.
I owned 3 Suzuki dirt bikes
TS-185 TS-250 & TS-400 and friends had Yamahas and 1 Kawasaki and Honda's. Good times. Back when you could ride for years in the Mobile Co area here and never see all the trails. Just endless woods and trails. Back when this was still AMERICA. !
@Chuck Mos
I don't have them now lol.
But they were good trail street bikes !
I just got rid of my last bike. At one time!
I had a 74' TS 125 and TS 400. That sound takes me back. Strong engines bikes fell apart around them. Parts were almost impossible to get in the early 90's had to sell them off
@@grandwaha Yeah the TS-400 was a bit too heavy in the trails and my TS-250 was a good but I enjoyed the 185 the most. ! It was light but when you hit the power-band at 4K it was getting up 😁
"Back when this was still AMERICA!" For us kids back then it was, but I don't think much of the USA existed back then either. We just did not know it as kids, but if we tried to follow our free market dreams,---we found out that the USA is gone.

I had this exact same bike, it was the first ever new dirt bike I ever bought off the showroom floor. Brings back some great memories 👍
It was my 3rd bike brand new off the showroom floor,--making $1.00 part time as a young teen. Glad I was young then, because like bob Hannah, I would never have been able to get into dirt bike riding if I were a kid today. the 1986 production rule and the 4-stroke forced on the industry made them too expensive. That is the biggest factor of why 10 times the bikes were sold in the USA back then compared to today.
That's awesome I had one of them when I was a teenager...before that I had the 79 yz100 lol

My brother had a 1977 YZ 250. Wow what a beast that thing was. I don't know who came out with the mono shook but I remember it being one back then as well
Yamaha definitely invented the Monoshock!
Yamaha had the Mono Shock first, the others came after...Yamaha called it Mono-Cross on YZs,Suzuki was Full Floater on RMs,Kawasaki KXs had Uni-Trak,and Honda CRs had Pro-Link.
They say the Full floater was the best ever. Suzuki got sued for stealing it.
@@MikeHF Really? They got sued by whom?...I know they used the name "Full Floater" for at least 10-15 years. Did they supposedly steal the design? I never saw it before Suzuki. The name was literal-The shock wasn't bolted to the frame at either end. The linkage compressed it from both ends. (I had an RM. Took it apart many times.)
@@danielrose7311 Nope. And it was the Jones family who really made the first YZ. The Yamaha mono-shock was actually designed by an individual engineer who offered it to Suzuki first, and Suzuki turned it down.

In the mid to late 70's they were MX's
beautiful
The PROGRESS that motorcross bikes made from 1975 to 1985 was Supersonic.
The YZ series was on that cutting edge with something radically different almost every year.
The basic rear suspension hasn't changed in years now.
During the 70's it Changed every month.
Someone had something new in every new Magazine.
Great bike !!!
It was not "supersonic",---it was typical free enterprise in a new industry. Now, the EPA/government tells us what to make and buy, and that is called a dictatorship, with the only thing supersonic is the skyrocketing price of a bike.
But yes, the bike development of the 70's to 85,---was a race within itself. It was wonderful and real progress from the minds of man, not the minds of a dictatorship.
Ok;
It was meteoric

"Those were the days my friends... we thought they'd never end." Like it jus road. Outa. Heaven, awesome vid.
Yamaha's YZ tradition is amazing piece of art.
Yamaha is also guilty of being the manufacturing spearhead for 2 movements that put the price of a bike out of reach for kids. 1) the 1986 production rule and 2) the acceptance of EPA force to bring a 4-stroke road race engine into a MX frame. They also now far their old plastic to companies with no quality control, and will make your dealership eat the cost of the twisted fender because it is not in it's original packaging,---to sell the junk to who? If you are replacing old plastic for the YZ bikes,---go aftermarket for quality. And as a quality engineer, I never thought I would say that about a Japanese dirt bike company.
Mate if he faceplants at a 100km/h on a gravel road rips his teeth out of his lower jaw or head butts a tree he won't be your son. Put a helmet on, every time. Ps YZ's of this era are from my time as a teenager, so I love the bike. Heed the warning ⚠️ this stuff can happen in an instant
