I would say it is, as far as I know, the sm7b is a rehoused sm58. The largest differences being, it restricts you from getting too close to the capsule with its physical design. So if you really want an sm7b sound, just make sure youre farther away from the grill of the sm58, and you save 600 bucks. That and instead of cutting off a 15k it goes to 20k. I want to double check the schematics, but I believe that to be the case
I feel like the 87 is overrated. This mic is $400 here in the US. I just got a used one for $125 . Great mic I love it for vocals and sax!!
Sm7 is a versatile mic used on so many sources and your break down of how helpful it is in rejection of other things as it pick up the main source is a message!!!✅✅✅
thanks for the video. Absolutely one of the best mics ever made. It just works on so many different vocals..
Not overrated, as you point out VERY versatile but quite overpriced
As some other youtubers pointed out: You can make a SM58 sound much like a SM7b by removing the transformer.
In a home studio environment, where your spouse turns on the dishwasher while you're in the middle of your very best recording of that chorus, a dynamic, much rejecting mic comes in VERY handy!
I love my modded SM58 for all those reasons!
Is it the real deal? NO!
Would I still want an SM7b because it's an SM7b? YES!
Will I have ANY advantage using it over the modded 58? Don't think so.
The Shure SM7B is what you call a "Forever mic" there's a reason it is the leading industry standard in alot of music and commercial recordings. There is this god awful stigma around this microphone now as many people know its name as the "streamers mic" which infuriates me because they are 1. not even using the mic properly alot of times. 2. they are not even getting the full experience of what it can do, they just want the image of looking cool.
Oh and the surge of people buying fake SM7B's and selling them as authentic. I see those all the time on facebook marketplace now , some poor bastard is getting scammed into buying a $120 knockoff and tries to resell it for what he lost or retail of the authentic.... knowing its gonna sit on a close shelf or in the trash eventually.
The SM7 is great if you like muddy bass and no highs.
It's overpriced and it's really annoying but it's not overrated. It sounds amazing, once you buy it, and a way to boost it.
definitely overrated. Very insensitive and causes problems with volume and noise on some of the audiointerfaces.
I have seen many streamers who buy an SM7B microphone and use it incorrectly. For example, they place it too far away or point it at the ceiling. I don’t think the SM7B is overrated, but I think the general public sees it as the default (and only good) option that will automatically make them sound good. They also think that they need to spend a lot of money on this mic and a good audio interface to power it. However, the truth is that it is much more important to learn how to get the best audio quality with any mic, and I think that almost any $100-ihs dynamic mic will sound 90% as good as the SM7B.
