I like to imagine this is a story about a dude who crash-landed on an island with tribal people. They give him bananas. And like, the next morning he gets rescued by helicopter and the tribal people give him one last banana before he goes away.
This song used to fill me with rage just because it felt like a callout for not going with the flow or being relaxed. I'm a naturally uptight person so this was a strange yet refreshing ballad.
The 2005 versions have this raw and very open feel which actually makes it really hard for me to listen to (don’t ask) like I genuinely can’t listen to this with headphones without like shaking at every change of rhythm
This is the first song in the 2005 version to have joe's iconic radio voice! I love this. They removed it in later versions, but added it do more songs, so maybe that's better... I think its a megaphone that gives it that sound.
Maybe an unpopular opinion but the ‘08 version is a bit better, the beginning sounds more like it’s being recorded in a nightclub with the vocals sounding more distant and compressed, the change from the nightclub setting on the first verse to the energetic band tone 2nd verse is a lot more noticeable probably cause there’s more instruments, and lastly the distortion on the vocals don’t mix as well with the music on the calm “9 o’clock and it’s getting dark” verse as the softer echo effect used in the later version. Still an enjoyable version though

The song is about drug addiction "Tonight we dance around de flame , Then we get to play de spirit game" Now "Banana Man" is the dealer, "De Flame" is the lighter, while the "Spirit Game" is the high. I like the latter half of the two, Drug Addiction seems alot more viable then "Big Corporations" But, that's why I made this comment to see what you guys think.

And it’s basically entirely up to the listener to derive any sort of message from them because Joe is not going to say anything comprehensible about it (Think Hawaii part two and how he describes it as “genre of infinity express through hologram” and whatnot)
I'm of the opinion that the song is mostly just an anarcho-primitive mumble. I think the dancing around the flame and the "spirit game" are to be taken literally. If you've ever seen the historic evolution of primitive human tribes, they pretty much all loved dancing around campfires and worshipping spirits in their very early stages. Similarly, the banana eating is just a metaphor for the potential simplicity of the lifestyle of a primitive ape.
I listen to this song in the morning while waiting for my mom to get Starbucks. Now whenever I listen to this song I just think of that and weird premises for Mega Man Classic fanfiction.
Actually, 2006 was a rerelease of the 2005 version that only fixed a small type on the side of the case. In 2008, Tally Hall joined Atlantic and touched up some of the songs on the album. If you listen to the 2008 version of Banana man, it's a tiny bit different in the beginning. I own the 2008 version and a 2007 pre-release CD of the album for radio stations.
