The Second Most Important Number in Maths, Compound Interest, and Logarithms

Right next to pi, we have the famous constant e, which is named after leonhard euler, the most prolific mathematician in history. He was blind in one eye by the age of 28, yet still made so many contributions in mathematics that people started naming things after the second person who studied them after Euler, since otherwise everything would have the same name. E has the approximate value of 2.71828 but it is a never ending decimal just like pi, and it is actually derived by the formula for compound interest. We look at some of the interesting properties of e, and then also talk about logarithms, which is basically the inverse of raising something to the power of something. We then look at the natural logarithm, which is log base e, and see why it is so useful in so many areas of life that we give it the name "natural logarithm".
