  • The cast-iron railings surrounding a tomb in Beauparc Graveyard, County Meath feature an unusual detail around the top: a skull and crossbones. There is no information on who was responsible for this work, and the tombstone is unfortunately too worn to be able to read whose resting place it marks.

Interesting cemetery, and like you said, very well cared for. The mausoleums are in very good condition, except for the one without a roof. I have never seen coffins ⚰️ enclosed in brick before myself, perhaps it is to help preserve the coffins a little longer, and help discourage vandalism.
Thank you very much GV and Sue, for another great walking tour. Have a great day. 😊

The skull with crossed femurs generally symbolized the minimum of remains required for resurrection. When there was limited space for graves in churchyards, older graves were dug up and the skull and femurs were removed and placed in communal ossuaries. Ossuaries are large vaults for bone storage with the skull and cross bone symbol usually placed outside above the iron doors. On many Scottish and some New England grave markers, skull symbols and other symbols of death including an hourglass or angel child's head with wings or even crossed shovels were portrayed to remind the viewer of their own mortality.
