    He came out great in classics. And for the record, he is legendary in the Black community and no one ever viewed him as a token character. One thing though, his availability back in the day was minimal, but that added to his lore. Had to wait for MOTUC to get him, and I got the origins one for my birthday.

    Clamp Champ has been a staple of my heroic Masters since the 80's. The Classics take on him was perfect - and representation of different ethnic groups is very important. It was great to see a variety in the 1980's and it's great to see now. Everything about this guy is a positive role model and badass.

    I passed on getting Clamp Champ in the 80s, I felt he didn’t have much play value, most of the characters in the later run of the MOTU had inbuilt gimmicks (superpowers ?) he felt very plain, his clamp easily could have been sold separately or packed in with He Man. I also spotted the re-use of the chest armour at the time, that played a factor in me not buying the figure.

  • @WiiMan25
    @WiiMan25 Před 2 lety +6

    Not even talking about the He-Bro meme, I've seen my share of 80s kids on facebook MOTU groups claim that they used him as He-Man's successor.
    Like, they'd have He-Man die and then give his gear to Clamp Champ, essentially making him the new He-Man. I've seen like 3 or 4 different people independently claim they did this as kids. Popular custom in the Origins fandom too, even I do it! (I have two He-Mans, one of which I repainted into Wun-Dar, so I give THAT He-Man's weapons and harness to Raenius). I call him He-Champ.
    Thoughts?

      @paluxyl.8682 Před 2 lety +1

      You should what Scott's video "A-list characters peg warming" ..... I would say that Mattel wants Clamp Champ to peg-warm for representation .
      Here are some reasons why I think that :
      - the figure was produced a lot to the fact that he is rather unknown
      - he was one of the first figures
      - you can find him everywhere at least 2 times in a store
      I think Clamp Champ as a character is awesome , but I'm not a big fan of the 2 heads of the origins figure ... the MOTU Classics head looks much better . I'm from Germany and you can find here him in every store , even little toy stores got him many times since the release . Strange thing is that Clamp Champ was in some stores even the first figure ever for many months before they had He-man and Skeletor . Beleave it or not , but I was in stores that had him over 10 times on the shelf .

    Appreciate the history video, but it still feels as though Clamp Clamp was an afterthought in the original toy line especially when you consider that Sun Man (who was an unrelated property at the time, yet created in a MOTU-esque style) was produced before Clamp's introduction by about a year. Seems like he was quick and low cost response to get sales away from the competitor.

  • @phantom1592
    @phantom1592 Před 2 lety

    I would love to see some kind of video that gets into your personal headspace when it comes to MOTU Lore. I mean, do you still see a difference between what 'old school classic' lore is, vs. 'What you created yourself for Classics?'
    I mean, the names you created, the ideas you pushed... the backgrounds and connnections... Now with Revelatiosn and Netflix, it's gone from a kind of 'fan fiction you wrote yourself in your spare time' to 'multi-media forms canon'. I think we're going to see a lot more of some of your contributions now, than we are 'two halves of the sword to open the jawbridge/Skeletor cloned sorceress to make teela/Cave of Power etc. etc.' that "I" grew up with.
    For example in this video you made a commment about how Clamp Champ is 'more than just the Black one'... but really, anything added to him outside of 'New head on reused body' pretty much came from you. One minicomic didn't give kids much insight into how 'cool' he was and he was never in any cartoon unitl 2020... So really 'The Black one' was all we had. Nobody else until classics.... So yeah, it's hard not to see him as the 'token'.
    Basically, how does it feel to see your depictions and stuff being accepted as a modern canon and outliving 'Classics'? or is it all just 'MOTU' now to you? Do you still see the stuff on screen and say 'Ohhh I did that!! That was mine!!'

      Exactly! Closeted racists use that tactic all the time. They also put a number on how many minorities are acceptable (which is usually 1 or 2 for them) and then they like to pretend someone's color doesn't exist as if it's something bad that has to be ignored. Also did you notice how he pretended that Clamp champ came first when Sunman was created in 1985 which is 2 years prior? 😒

Every kid deserves that and not to feel left out. It's a destructive and divisive ideal invented by racists, which benefits no one but hate ridden types on both wings of politics. *I don't need to see myself on screen to be inspired by the art, and nor should anyone else.* I enjoy old Godzilla movies for example. The entire cast of those movies is Japanese. I'm a white guy. How can I feel included in those movies? *I don't need to, because the movie is not about me.* Modern people need to leave their ego wagons at the door when they engage in entertainment. I'm not a huge fan of Clamp Champ, he's rather bland to me. I'm neutral.
    I liked the classics figure, but I certainly didn' t love it.
    I really like his colors scheme - silver and blue.
    I like his clamp gimmick, but it's unfortunate because the classics buck was showing its age by this point after so many characters.
    The lack of wrist hinges, no butterfly joints, no rocker ankles etc, it really limited your ability to pose and play and really enjoy the clamp gimmicks.
    You could basically just pose him with the clamp extended in front of him.
    It was boring.

    Diversity not only matters, but it also creates new market possibilities when new target audiences might develop more interest in a franchise when they see themselves reflected on its products. It's no coincidence that a mother created Sun Man for her kid. There's no racial diversity in the MOTU/POP franchise the way they were portrayed in the 80s, there's no problem in admitting it. It's important to notice those mistakes so they won't be repeated. If you're already creating a racially diverse world with people with blue, green, purple skin.... why not black? And whenever there was a black person it was a less than secondary character, like a random soldier in Randor's army, the Eternian architect or Netossa, which no one will remember unless they're a hardcore fan. Sorry dude, Clamp Champ is a token black character and one that didn't even get to be properly used in the content.
