The team battles the tail end of a hurricane to investigate the last keeill standing, preserved beneath a golf course on the Isle of Man. A thousand years ago the island was dotted with these keeills, or small stone chapels, most of which have completely disappeared. Mick, an avowed enthusiast for early Christian buildings, is in his element. Sensational finds keep coming, including perfectly preserved plaited human hair, and a specimen of Ogham script. The team are joined by local archaeologist Andy Johnson, keeill expert Nick Johnson, and Viking specialist Dawn Hadley.

Finding the plaited hair and Ogham script on a 3-day dig is amazing. I've worked with both Phil Harding and Mick Aston and can confirm they are as great guys as this episode suggests. I only wish Mick was still with us...

What a wonderful experience for you. I only just learned of Mick's passing, as I just discovered these videos in February 2021. I'm in US and wish I'd been able to watch over the span of the show. At only 66, Mick passed much too young.
@@theoriginalalanna7796 Mick was a fabulous person. I got to know him two years before his untimely death and we worked together on several churches in Somerset. He taught me a lot. And I worked with Phil on two Somerset churches in 2013 and 2015. Both of them were what you see in the episodes - great guys and super knowledgable. I attended Mick's funeral in 2013 and there was much love for him. I miss him and our conversations...

It really struck me when Helen, discussing the Ogham writing, called it "the find of Matt's life." Of course, all of the older archaeologists are excited, too, but I really hope that Matt's name is included in the list of people responsible for the discovery. One of the very best episodes. Tony's opening line also cracked me up when he said, "We'll bring all our modern archaeological techniques - and Phil Harding - to bear..." Hilarious!

Spoken by a non-archaeologist though. I excavated a few burials and you always think of them as a person, who had a life.
This may be my favorite episode. The woman's hair is beautifully haunting. 21:23 where Jackie his pulling gently at the skull to remove it and coaxes "C'mon sweetheart." always tugs at my heart.
Sorry mate, it was New Zealand's fav Bridgett/ Bridg, coaxing it off. She went on to host shows down under & have more munchkins with Raysan, the computer designer.
@@maeve4686 Bridg lifted the hair yes but Jackie gave the c'mon sweetheart line at the Timestamp (which was a different grave). Matthews comment mentions both pieces.
Jackie always treats the skeletons with reverence and respect for the people they once were. I believe I have watched nearly every episode and after all those years on the show I never get the feeling that Jackie looks at them as just another skeleton

i think with these types of digs theyre only given permission on certain times. probably lost the golf course/country club some money on the good weather days and we all know how wealthy people feel about money
Thank you so much for putting these episodes online. I am from the US and never knew about Time Team until just a couple months ago. I am quite envious of the people who got to grow up watching this! On the good side, I have about 20 years of episodes to go through!

I spent my Sunday evenings watching it on TV with my dad, I loved it and wanted to be an archaeologist for years. I'm doing my masters in ancient history at the moment
I’m going to class myself as a very luck lad.
Not only did I grow up with Time Team on the TV.
I have had the opportunity when driving home from a holiday with my son in the Lake District to shout hello to Tony Robinson (while he was filming a scene for Time Team) I do recall someone shouting expletives back at me but I was so happy I couldn’t help it.
I have holidayed many times on the wonderful Isle of Man for the Tourist Trophy.
And I have even been lucky enough to have lived there for a few years.
To top it off and by no means least because I have my beautiful daughter from it and considering you are from the USA. I also lived in Omaha Nebraska for a few years and visit Iowa often...until or strange times being unable to travel lately.
Along with this I have lived or traveled in many other places / around the world.
Lots of exploring in all of these places have opened my eyes to the history of or somewhat changing but beautiful world and our ancestors.

Likewise I am in the northeast usa and in my late 50s and never had much interest in archaeology but this series has me transfixed.
The one site I hope to visit soon near me is the Meadowcroft Rock Shelter which may re-define the dates of the first humans in north america.

Mick was really in his element. Tony was right, give Mick a chapel and he wouldn't care if it was blizzard. This episode and the one on Mull you can really see the enthusiasm written all over his face.

Jackie often talks to her bones, Brigid does too, and it makes it more real that the bones were a person
any episode with Jackie involved is like pure magic to me!! She always remembers that these burials were people, and it always makes me tear up, but this episode especially. Spectacular.
Our eldest child recent passed away. When my wife heard "Come on, sweetheart" the tears started to roll down. As @Andy wrote, "a moment of compassion and humanity".

At 29:30 - I love the friendship and banter that Mick and Phil have here. You can tell they are from different walks of life but great friends and have a lot of mutual respect.
This was when we had real educational and informative TV. How I miss those days. Thank you so much for uploading these classics of British television.
As much as I am looking forward to the new Time Team, I will miss Phil and Tony. They were the comic relief in these shows.
I have watched Time Team for years and I think this is one of my favourite episodes. They were a fabulous team and I loved the enthusiasm and excitement of Tony Robinson bringing everything to us watching on TV asking the questions we can’t and seeking explanations for us when we haven’t a clue. ❤
My husband Steve and I were avid watchers of Time Team. So glad I accidentally found your online episodes. Quite a few years ago I was driving to a country town to do some judging at their annual show. On the way I saw a gaggle of folk all on their knees digging with garden trowels. No time stop as working to a schedule. They were still there on the way back, so I stopped to investigate. They were looking for the site of a very early hotel/pub in the district. I asked if I could come back the next day and take my husband after telling them of our love of Time Team. Answer, yes with much enthusiasm. Next day got husband ready with no explaination but much grumbling. Drove there telling him once almost there to close his eyes and not to open them till I stopped the car. Well you should have seen the look on his face. It was all I could do to stop him jumping into a trench. Tuned out to be an archeological class from our State University. What a day we had. Nothing has ever topped it.
I don't want to spoil this for anyone so I will just say I have never forgotten this very special episode because of the hair. So wonderful to see this again!

I can't tell you how much I love this show! I always wanted to be an archeologist, but was always discouraged. So I went into other less satisfying careers. This at least let's me live vicariously through you all. Thank you, wonderful series!

Whilst I've enjoyed the new series, you can't beat the original TT with Tony, Mick and Phil. I guess I'm just a little stuck in my ways... What a fantastic episode, so many incredible finds.

This is my favourite episode, and I remember when it first aired on TV. I loved the fact they found plaited hair like that and just how much history was in one place.

A really breath taking moment the final stone is removed from the cist to reveal the lock of hair.
That was incredible after all those years , I’ve never forgotten that moment since it was first broadcast.

A magical episode and one of my favourites. I especially love this period when we can really see the deep respect and camaraderie between the cast members. Tony, Mick and Phil in particular. ♥

Time Team has to be one of the best non fiction TV programs ever. I've been watching it for years. Great to be able to watch it on CZcams.
The white quartz pebbles in the graves are very interesting. I've read that they are found in many graves around the island, from the Bronze Age up to the 17th century. I can only assume that it's because the coast line, especially in the southern part, is covered in white quartz pebbles and people have always loved their pure white colour and smooth shapes. I love this tiny piece of information because as a kid I collected so many of these pebbles on the island, apparently continuing a very old tradition and fascination with the white pebbles.
My 6 year old daughter still innocently continues this tradition on the island.
Humans will be humans will be humans. Some traditions seem to be written into the human psyche
We have seen these pebbles in at least one other episode, if I remember correctly it was in a early chapel on another island, off Scotland?
@@johndillon8051 yes, it was that episode were they dig at the site of a celtic christian church up in the hebrides. i don't the remember the episode number, but it's also uploaded on this channel.

A wonderful programme. We always followed Time Team back in the day when we used to have a telly.
This is one episode we missed and what a winner it is. Our family has modern day links to the island ( not golf links - before anyone says) our Mother was lucky enough to retire to this island back in the 70's and she is still there now. She let us know a long time ago that she found her peace there and will never return to the mainland. It must be her Viking blood.
Some years ago I was trained by a colleague of Phil's at Wessex archaeology - and he told us two little stories about Phil that make me love him all the more. The first is - if asked how to knap flint (at which he was an acknowledged expert) he would answer: (you need to imagine the accent for these) "If I told you, then you'd know". Which meant "No, I am keeping this skill for myself". And - if a wide eyed young digger approached him with a find and asked what he thought it was he would invariably answer "If you don't know what it is ... put it back!" Apparently this was so frequent it was practically his catchphrase at work.
This makes him sound like a selfish, arrogant git. I hope it's not true.
I don't need to "imagine" the accent. I absolutely read the words in his voice.

@@graceygrumble It sounds like rubbish. He used to lecture on knapping and do demonstrations - he came to my uni. If he said it I think it actually meant "you can't just be told, you need to gain the experience for yourself."
I think this is our favourite episode. The shows are a constant inspiration and fascination, and this is gem. Insights into the treasured Mick, Matt's best find, the hair!?! and just so much wonderful history in one dig. Adored every second and i can't wait to see the new episodes when they air. Probably the most important TV show in history. :)

Like fine wine time team just gets better and better with time, I watched them all fresh when made, I was made curious about our history and improved my small understanding re seeing the repeats in the dribs and drabs in which they were offered and now all back together again in one place and the promise of a new series, it will be impossible to find those wonderful personalities that made it so brilliant and perfect. Rock on Phil and Mick!
The carved stone was later reinterpreted to be earlier in date and a slightly different linguistic form, and is now thought to be a grave commemoration contemporary to the cist burial it was found near.

This episode really shows Mick’s love of archaeology, and his belief that his chosen field could be exciting to the average person. The enthusiasm of all the diggers is palpable, definitely one of my favorite episodes!

20 odd years ago,when my children were little, TT was on tv and we used to watch it here in New Zealand. It was a great way for them to to see the UK ( where I’m from) and often see the terrible weather! They always loved the episodes and learned so much. They also used to ask for “translations” of some of the accents…

The Isle of Man is one of my favourite places in the world, so many cultures in such a small place.
I was told my ancestors originated there. At least my were me ancestors loved before immigrating to the USA.

Uncle Phil is still excavating Waterloo Site at Hugomont Farm, although with Covid on the loose maybe he is relaxing. Phil has been excavating Waterloo Site for a number of years so I cant see him returning as he is now in his 70s.

I am Canadian, and it is currently -36 C outside with a -50 windchill, and watching these die-hards work in the wind and rain makes me feel colder than going outside and chipping ice off my truck to find the cord for the block heater.

What an absolutely amazing find, and story. It just shows you what’s underneath our feet.
I looked for an update on the inscription: Forsyth concludes that the supposed Middle
Irish inscription (BAC OCOICAT IALL = "corner/angle", "fifty", "throng/group") was not a formal inscription but perhaps
"idle doodling or graffiti". However, a closer examination of the inscription suggests a reading of [--][A] MAC[I] MUCOI
CATIALL[I] = "..., son of the tribe of Catiallus" which follows a conventional formula found on very many Ogham
memorial stones.

I love this show so much. I remember as a kid, there was hardly anything on tv that interested me. I’ve never watch soaps or any long running tv shows (apart from some great British comedy of course) Then time team started. And I was totally hooked. It was so interesting and amazing and gave me an appreciation of history I had never had before.
Just hearing the theme music gives me a thrill. 😊
You can actually see the excitement they are feeling about this one... This show is amazing, archeology is seen as boring, but here is a TV show centred around it that's popular... It's great to see some people still value exploration and discovering the past.
I have recently "stumbled" on Time Team and absolutely lapping up the episodes. I live in the Westrn Cape Province of South Africa, but am British and raised in the colonies. I really enjoy the different discoveries and particularly the last two I have watched of the Isle of Man and the Isle of Mull. Absolutel fascinating. Thank you so much. incredible enthusiasm from the team flows through the episodes.
I thought the episode I watched before this was going to be my favourite. s13e06. as i live in that county.
but with this episode....
I lost a dear friend of mine, who i met "online" from a computer game, we shared over 9 years of endless fun and silliness.
both smitten on each other, but due to certain outside factors never quite took that "leap of faith"
we were going to meet in 2020 at a friends wedding. for the first time after 8-9 years. (lockdowns, covid ruined that)
she sadly got cancer towards the middle of 2019 and due to lockdowns/logistics in 2020 and her immune system being so low, our group was un-able to fly over to see her, so we brought gifts and did silly things an sent them instead.
(found an artist to draw a cartoon of her favourite fictional character picking up lot's of little small creatures and playing with them, got a friend of ours to place that on a card. with all of our happy messages inside, that had been scanned in with our hand writing so it "looked" like we had all taken turns written inside and sent it to her before she had an op to remove one of the tumours in her lower leg/calf)
I never got the chance to see her "properly" ( if you know what i mean)
she lived in Norway her whole life, was just a few years younger than me. an we had everything in common, from games, tv shows to music, everything.
Seeing that grave being unearthed an them saying it was a woman's grave and possibly over 1,000 years old.... my heart....
I still haven't been to "visit" her final resting place. I'm too scared/nervous.. her entire family know very little about the "Gaming" friend group she was with an barely anything about me and how we'd send endless photos of what we were doing, from dying her hair, to going on her nights out with her girly friends, to buying a new t-shirt or headset etc.
An well... as time was short there was a local lad who had been smitten on her for years also ( i had no idea), she accepted whatever offer he proposed and in her final 3-4 months he moved into their family abode an basically ran rings around her an did everything, he was the one who found her early in the morning after she collapsed walking to go get some pain meds for a mild headache she was having.
turned out due to restrictions and things they had "missed" a tumour on her brain. she was rushed to hospital but within 10 hours or so there was nothing they could do other than let her fade away.
before that tho this guy was under strict orders that if "the end came" to fire a message out onto an app called discord to let this group know. (or moar importantly...me)
but she was super secure with everything so he had to manually pick up her frail hand to open the biometrics on her phone to unlock it whilst she was in a coma.
we then got the update and said we have but a few moments and he then read out our final messages to her before then letting us know she had passed away just after midnight on the 25th ( Norway time) but for me in England it was 23:07 on the 24th)
i instantly thought, dam you! we'd tease each other constantly about how we'd have "double" birthdays due to time-zones. an how for her she'd be the first to see our birthdays and I'd joke well due to my slowness I'm always an hour behind anything important. so it just felt fitting that she'd fade on a crossover of dates.
24th would be when she'd celebrate xmas with her family and I in England would do it on the 25th.
( an yes that is right she died on the 25th of December..)
sigh I didn't mean to ramble >.<
it's just that when it was confirmed that that young Woman's grave was 1,400 years old an aged between 25-35. it's the exact age range that my friend was (27)and seeing the colour of the hair... and then victors art interpretation... then seeing that today is actually the 23rd of December.
I would totally throw money at a replica of that piece of art, just for how emotional it made me just now.
I still miss her dearly, but i just want to say thank you to Time Team for not only going around our United Kingdom and searching for answers but for also uploading so many episodes for people from all around the world to enjoy, I'd watch a few episodes as a kid but could never sit an watch them properly (other family members would want to watch other things)
back then Brigid was my favourite an in a silly way it was so wholesome watching her delicately lifting out that young girl's elegantly looking ancient hair from a time that feels so far away.

@@sunshine2528 Thank you kindly for reading my emotional outburst, it's taken me a while to realize just how fortunate I've been and longer to feel comfortable "projecting it" in a safe way.
I still have all of the happy memories that we created, to enjoy for as long as I'm able and that's providing me a small piece of solace in the years after her passing 🙂

When I discovered TimeTeam, my librarian’s brain took over, and I now have every episode I have seen catalogued by date, subject, episode number, location, plus some episodes that I haven’t seen, but have some information about, from the internet.

the Ogham stone found during this episode is now on display at the Manx Museum in Douglas (Isle of Man). The stone had the record name "Speke Keeill Ogham Stone (Manx Cross 205)". The museum states "This broken slab was found at Speke Keeill (IOMHER 0699.00) during excavations by the Time Team TV program in 2006. One face bears a damaged ogham inscription, the interpretation of which is difficult. One reading suggests a rather abstract interpretation, translating the words, 'corner', 'fifty' and 'group', but another has proposed, '...son of the tribe of Catiall..' "
