Most of SE exclusives for Nintendo aren't even exclusive anymore. Not that people would know that, since they never advertised them outside of Nintendo Directs. Like when this whole Square thing began, I realized that all of the HD-2D games are even on Steam.
Naw they tried to grow their fanbase by trying to make it more action but that didn't work. FF16 alienated traditional rpg fans and Playstation 5 owners don't buy games. They claim to buy games but all they do is play Twitter.
They only have themselves to blame for setting unrealistic expectations. These companies took their success during the COVID years and somehow thought setting exceptions based on that was realistic.
They wanted to make as much from Rebirth as Remake, but there were twice as many PS4s as PS5s so of course Remake was going to make MUCH more than Rebirth. FF16 too.
it is no unrealistic, but the outdated 20 or more years old formula since the PS1 era for Square that they had to move on. Atlus learned it the hard way.

I am older than RGT. As games started to look 'more real,' I began to dislike them. Not because pixel art is better, but because for me, games represented a world outside this one. The art style, for me, helped maintain that separation. The more realistic the art became, the more it blurred the lines between the two worlds. I am not a Nintendo fan, nor am I watching a Nintendo CZcamsr ;) however, that company has demonstrated that gameplay and entertainment can sell a lot of games, not just graphics. The big gaming industry should consider not only shipping AAA titles but also experimenting with this approach.
Luckily I’m an Nintendo fan and I agree with you and it’s one of the reasons why I chose the Nintendo Switch. I will continue to choose Nintendo over the lights of Sony and Microsoft along with PC because I don’t care about realistic graphics I care about gameplay fun and Nintendo is the only one that seems to understand that.
To me, graphics are less important than actual gameplay. We all play games that appeals to us. Me, for example, I love games with great Ai allies, strategy games, and New Game Plus games. As for FPS stuff, 007 Nightfire bots, Timesplitters FP bots, and Perfect Dark N64 bots were loads more enjoyable than stuff like CoD.

They build their own sustainable Eco system and loyal fanbase . Square Enix is always try to ditch their current fanbase and chasing a different one . Switch is behind one gen also help significantly . While graphic fidelity has become much better , Development cost ,game engine , development method and resource are not advance enough for such high end graphic to be sustainable long term .
Turns out spitting on fans of your games in an effort to appeal to a broader audience may not have been the best choice… Of course there are other factors but turning off the built in audience can only hurt.

The recent final fantasy games failed expectations and super mario RPG remake surpassed Expectations, it is not surprising that they will work with Nintendo again
the super mario rpg remake, trials of mana remake, and neo the world ends with you should honestly be the scope square enix works with more often. polished smaller budget games that still give bang for their buck in terms of content.

I own both Playstation 5 and Switch. Only reason I have Switch is because of Mario, Zelda, and a few other Nintendo franchises. Outside of that, I'm buying 90% of my console games on Playstation 5. There are so many games on Playstation 5 that either aren't on Switch or won't be on Switch (example: next year's Grand Theft Auto 6 isn't coming to Switch). Not to mention the recent 2024 Playstation 5 exclusives have been brilliant. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is game of the year. Stellar Blade is a contender for game of the year. Rise of the Ronin is an awesome game. On Switch, I recently bought that Princess Peach game that came out about two months ago. I enjoyed it (despite most people hating on it), I had a fun time with it, but it's in no way better than the three 2024 Playstation 5 exclusives I mentioned (two of which are going to be fighting it out for game of the year. PS fanboy response - "What, so they can get 200 more sales? Everyone knows Xbox gamers don't care about Final Fantasy." I keep seeing that response, yet Square seems to think otherwise & wants to bring their games to Xbox anyway.
@corey2232 tbh they arent wrong ffxv sales on xbox was abyssmal. I dont even think kh3 sold much. But tbh most of the mainstream xbox audience play western gamed since thats what people buy xbox for. I say this is someone who games on pc.
@kita6502 If that's true, and it's not worth their time, why are they doing it (and doing it as a measure to dig themselves out of a hole)? Clearly, the sales weren't "abysmal," and their data shows it's worth the effort. There's also no official data showing Xbox sales figures. Only VGChartz has any estimates, which is questionable at best, showing 1.14 million on Xbox.
I keep saying jrpg companies tying themselves to PlayStation at this point is suicidal. It's not 20-25 years ago, the fanbase for jrpgs have fractured and spread out across multiple platforms since then(and part of why ff and s.e. are fading brands), PlayStation is an after thought in Japan. if you want your jrpg to sell it has to be on pc and Nintendo as well. On top of that, budgets matter. The more "realistic"/graphically impressive the game, the more it costs to make. People can cackle about how Nintendo, falcom, ect games look like "ps3 games" but they turn a profit
It's their own fault for setting ridiculous expectations for games that are difficult to gain the type of numbers they want, while at the same time none of them are groundbreaking games (good games sure, but nothing that is making everyone go out and buy them). It really has nothing to do with exclusivity. If these games were multiplatform, they still wouldn't meet their expectations. Square Enix is just one of those companies that need a "coming to Jesus" type of epiphany.
Eventually they will also stumble across this problem, since hardware will keep getting stronger even if they are a generation behind. Totk took 5 years, nintendo is just lucky and maybe smart about which projects get high budgets, since all these high budget games sell more than 20mil.
Small remark, labor laws in Europe, like in the Netherlands, are very good compared to the US and in some cases it's even better. It depends on perspective. European laws prioritize worker protections, while US laws emphasize employer flexibility. Both systems have pros and cons, but neither is inherently superior
music industry went through this years ago. Today's video game content isn't just competing with other contemporary content, it's competing with the greatest hits of all time as well.
I watched your video yesterday and I absolutely 100 percent agree that the production values for these AAA games are too high. Final Fantasy 16 is a really good example of wasting money on the combat system. I really hope that with the next Final Fantasy title, they scale back on these ultra intricate combat systems, bring it back to a well paced battle system and get back to focusing on a great epic story. I also believe that Square has missed a major opportunity to make a new final fantasy title specifically for the Switch. That would force the developers to scale down the production values and really focus more on the store
Does gaming always need to be "get bigger, make it massive" I will not let game design go downhill. Because its still my dream job and I'm hoping that it will change and get better 🙏
Well... They're kinda right. Gamers online look at themselves as the majority. "If they want the game they'd buy the console". I get a lot of people wanna' argue because they're lucky enough to be doing OK in this economy, but the fact is... nah man. We hurtin'. PS4 launched at 399. Three years in, you could get a launch PS4 online for as low as $150-200. I bought that PS4 because FFXV and FF7R (all of them) were INNITIALLY going to be on it. It had other games I wanted, or was going to. Made sense - turned out to be kinda' a lie. Three years in on the PS5, they're still selling for far more, and its just not justifiable. We can afford the game, thats easy. Save aside $10/mo, bam, bought. And yeah, I'm talking "as an adult". Things are tight. Like you said, sales are down on PS5 each year. THAT is why, and Sony just doesn't "get it," grasp that fundamental fact. I think this change to releasing on multiple consoles & PC that S-E is planning can only lead to better sales. You can't just depend on a chunk of change given to you by a console company to keep it exclusive - short term its a jumpstart. Long term? It doesn't equal out. Losses in the hundreds of millions. Sounds like too much to be real, but uh... Bezos rakes in billions, and thats one dude. So those numbers are totally realistic. tl;dr I don't think gaming is screwed. I think we're just going to see a temporary drop in fidelity on these games so they can realistically function on more consoles, until the power of the current gen is cheaper or even portable on occasion. That's how it has to be to reach the most people. And anyone saying that's stupid and "impossible" - Nintendo pulls it off. They adapted. In terms of evolution, its a successful adaptation - so that's how the market'll go. Plain and simple.
Chasing graphics and power was possibly the biggest mistake developers made with consoles. It's driven game development to a point where it's virtually impossible to be sustainable unless a game is a massive success
I bought several of their more experimental, recent titles (i.e., Dungeon Encounters) because I really wanted to encourage them to continue making those kinds of games in addition to their usual stuff, like Final Fantasy. I love Final Fantasy. But I like different things too, and I really miss SquareEnix putting out some of those kinds of titles. I'm drawn to fewer AAA titles than I used to be and find indie games more interesting.
Releasing Rebirth Day 1 on PC would have really helped because the PS5 installed base isn't as large as the PS4 installed base. But also several controversies behind Remake/Rebirth days before Rebirth's release didn't help SE's cause either. A lot of gamers have lost trust in SE based on what I've been reading in different comment sections.
The last couple Final Fantasy games were just straight up bad. Lets do modern graphics that brings the storying telling and gameplay in the style of X!
Let’s be totally honest here. Yes, current AAA development is unsustainable but at least some of the blame falls on the consumer side, as well. The vast majority of the most vocal minority of the gaming public and journalist crowd has been and still is singularly and utterly focused on polygon and FPS counts, for the past 15+ years. We gamers did not give birth to the beast but we’ve most certainly lovingly nurtured it.
Square enix blames themselves for accepting ps5 exclusives and shoots themselves in the foot . Sony puts a gun in their face to take the deal and make ff exclusive.
Not really fully their fault because they thought putting games exclusively on the highest selling console currently assumes they will have high expectations and profits
Non exclusives is very bad for gaming. Use your brain it’s common sense. Going non exclusive will hurt gaming very badly. Square did it to themselves btw, it’s squares motto to always have the best looking graphics with each new release because of their ego. So ya keep pumping millions into the part of a game people don’t care as much about. Graphics always come last
@@DevicCypher in this current generation, no exclusive games doesn’t work anymore, unless you’re Nintendo, being an exclusive game is considered anti-consumer practice, the only ppl that buy them are gatekeeping fanboys, more and more games have live-service elements nowadays and gamers will want their progress to be cross-saved across all platforms too Even xbox and PlayStation have already started putting their games on other platforms especially PC
Well they aren't paying developers more so I wonder why it cost so much CEO wages 25million a year coo 8 million a year some board of directors not a single one plays games 2-4 million a pop. Lead marketing director 15 million. The people that actually develop games 65k a year and lay offs at the finish of a title.
I think the FF7 RE__ games being at least partially reliant on nostalgia and experience from a game that came out an entire Scott the Woz ago didn’t help. Especially with them not being true remakes so new players could get the original story.
I have been waiting many years now for the monster that the AAA game budget industry has created to fall. Also, SE is maybe finally starting to realize that the Final Fantasy name doesn't hold the same kind of weight that it once did, especially to expect it to sell in the numbers they project on ONE platform? Maybe they will realize they should probably scale back on the graphical scope/budget of future FF games and focus more on making great games that people will love even without the most high fidelity graphics available?
People need to blame the scalpers. They had a huge hand in this stop hand washing it away. There are still places where you can’t get it in store Because Of the scalpers😊
The issue is that a lot of people went and bought the ps5 during covid, and once covid ended, a lot of people just never went back to their ps5 consoles.
Triple A gaming needs to get back to making 20 hour games and releasing every two years. There are so many 50hr+ games these days that everyone's backlog is a mile long. Give us good gameplay, a good concise story, and a great art direction. Won't cost insane amounts of money to make, won't need to be hyper realistic, and it can be done in a couple years again.
These huge companies have lost touch with the player base that made them popular. Is it nice to have a photo realistic game sure, is it better to have a game that is complete and plays well but looks like a 16 bit game yes. Square bets too much of its success on final fantasy. They have other properties. They just don't wanna take a risk on something else they own or can make.
It's the fact that creating games has become insanely expensive, they often have budgets larger than some Hollywood blockbuster films. They bring in all these famous actors to do voices, ok that cost inflates everything, they continually think that each new game has to look photo realistic, ray tracing, these huge massive open world scenarios etc etc etc. Why not focus solely on creating games that are really fun to play, replayability, have really good immersive storylines instead. I quit care about games looking realistic as possible years ago once I realized most of those games that looked life like we're not actually that fun or good to play thru. Some of the best games I have ever played thru and even my favorite up to the current are games that don't necessarily have those photo realistic aesthetics or not one of the massive AAA insane budget games, they have been games that use pixel art aesthetic, anime graphical style or even games that look more so like a PS1, PS2 era in style. Just because new hardware comes out and has more capabilities this does not mean developers need to simply create photo realistic over the top, continually pushing the limit of massive large open worlds or whatever. Imagine creating a brand New Final Fantasy or Mana game, since we are talking about Square Enix with the video , using the pixel art aesthetic, only not being limited by the hardware or storage constraints of a SNES, the could someone insanely epic things and it will be infinitely more cost effective, even going back to PS1, PS2 style but not being limited by that weak hardware or storage constraints! They could absolutely create brand new games in their mainline not needing to forever have massive budgets of $100 million+, I believe FFXVI had a development Budget of $300 million, this does not include the marketing cost, which will be all the more added on. Anyway, the cost could and would be significantly decreased if they created games for a while not being so over the top insanely bloated always going for the photorealism , using famous people as voice actors, or their image, etc. In Fact I dislike voice acting in games such as RPGs, I always enjoyed the older FF games where I read the dialogue which was immersive and fun for me, I had to use my imagination for how the characters would sound, which was my own creation and unique to my experience. Get back to making good TB RPGs again As well, I haven't enjoyed or really gotten into any of the Final Fantasy games since they did away with TB battle system and it's all action now, which can be fun at times but I really got into the older FF up til about 10 that's when I stopped enjoying them. How about a brand new FF or MANA game using the 2DHD art asthetic.
There's still a huge majority still on previous gen PS4 and Xbox one there's been way to many cross platform games PS4 to PS5 Xbox one to series x that is to blame To!
Rebirth was never going to do well. It has been far too long since the first part many will wait for all 3 to be released and many are not happy with story changes

I used to play split second every evening back in the day and I have to admit that was pretty addicting playing against other players every night. That one game sucked up a lot of time I can only imagine all the heavy hitting gaas times that are out now and a lot of gamers are in those games. They are looking at a new game priced the way it is and probably thinking nah Ill keep playing my fav gaas game not buying anything....
Times are changing.....

Gaming isn't a cheap hobby.
We're in record inflation. People can barely afford to eat. How many $70 games do you think you're average Joe can afford to buy in a year. Games market is entirely oversaturated
I buy zero $70 games per year.
Inflation was 7% in 2021. It's now 3.5. Stuff cost more because the consumer is demanding the stuff that's priced higher. Econ 101. We can't control our buying habits. Meals at McDonald's are over $10 when they used to be $3. Triple what they were pre pandemic. Gas has been roughly the same for decades, just under $4. How does that make sense?

Yeah their marketing is atrocious
I recall Square saying they grew their fanbase with FF16 yet the game ultimately didn't meet epectations... Wow
By the Numbers, just like every faceless Corporation does.
They wanted to make as much from Rebirth as Remake, but there were twice as many PS4s as PS5s so of course Remake was going to make MUCH more than Rebirth. FF16 too.
@@Vicvinesso who do you blame? Sony for not having enough consoles or Square for not selling on multiple consoles?
it is no unrealistic, but the outdated 20 or more years old formula since the PS1 era for Square that they had to move on. Atlus learned it the hard way.
@@bw8685 Sony is going to try and take advantage of everybody they can just like every megacorp. It's up to Square to resist that instant gratification of those incentives.
I’m right there with you. Lucky for me, I’m a Nintendo and smaller budget JRPG fan, so I’m enjoying games nowadays.
I blame themselves for going into the exclusive path
They wanted the quick buck but in the end screwed up
Non exclusivity is very bad for gaming. If you knew how this works you would know that. Use your brain.

I'm starting to belive the shipped units of PS5 V actual sales is a valid point.
It's always been. Soyny always mixed the numbers.
That's why I want to know software sales, not console sales.
I want to know ratio of ps5 sold to ff7 rebirth sold.
That hardly matters at all. Even if it's a shipped number, the supply is guaranteed to sell through (with the rate ps5's are being sold).
@garethflook5706 not really stores have 6 months cover. If the sales numbers are 15 % lower it stands to reason the software sales will reflect this
I agree if square enix sold their games on as many platforms as possible at the same time they would make more money.
“You have done that yourself!”
It is crazy to think that Nintendo is actually the only company who is still doing well in the gaming sphere...and they have old hardware and their new platform isn't even here yet. This totally baffles me.
Turns out spitting on fans of your games in an effort to appeal to a broader audience may not have been the best choice…
Of course there are other factors but turning off the built in audience can only hurt.
If only they added the pc version day one with the ps5 things would have been way different because ff16 and ff7 rebirth are actually very good games
I dont know..i liked FF Remaken/ Ribirth and FF 16 ...but on the same Time it was like the Rest of the Internet was like " Thats no Real Final Fantasy no more ..the Remakes and FF 16 Sucks!" or " its sucks becouse its only on PS " or " The FF 7 Remake Port for PC sucked !" 😅...so im not shure FF Games sales better on PC or on X Box when the Game is not pulled to Game Pass .

Remember Final Fantasy was more of a Nintendo franchise before the PS1 came out. The SNES is known as an amazing RPG console for a reason.

Sales for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth may not be up to Square Eniix's sales expectations, but they made an amazing game).

Very few buy games on Xbox anyway. They need to throw games at the Switch 2 next year
@corey2232 tbh they arent wrong ffxv sales on xbox was abyssmal.
I've been saying it was unsustainable for years. Nintendo saw it coming. They got laughed out of the industry. Looks like they got the last laugh.
Yeah, I think Satoru Iwata was thinking this 20 years ago. Which led to DS, Wii, etc.
Eventually they will also stumble across this problem, since hardware will keep getting stronger even if they are a generation behind. Totk took 5 years, nintendo is just lucky and maybe smart about which projects get high budgets, since all these high budget games sell more than 20mil.
You put the new final fantasy 7 remakes or final fantasy 16 on the Xbox and I'll consider getting them
Small remark, labor laws in Europe, like in the Netherlands, are very good compared to the US and in some cases it's even better.
It's a great time to be an indie gamer. The mighty must fall, for they collapse under their own weight.

Here’s to Nintendo Switch 2 shaking things up in 2025!
What's worse is they don't have any big seller coming out this year so this FY is going to be even worse
I just finished Syphon Filter Logans Shadow and Dark Mirror and had fun.
Forspoken being on multiple platforms still would have sucked.

I think the FF7 RE__ games being at least partially reliant on nostalgia and experience from a game that came out an entire Scott the Woz ago didn’t help. Especially with them not being true remakes so new players could get the original story.
Harvestella had a good story 😊
I have been waiting many years now for the monster that the AAA game budget industry has created to fall.
Also, SE is maybe finally starting to realize that the Final Fantasy name doesn't hold the same kind of weight that it once did, especially to expect it to sell in the numbers they project on ONE platform? Maybe they will realize they should probably scale back on the graphical scope/budget of future FF games and focus more on making great games that people will love even without the most high fidelity graphics available?
Or the Playstation name not big like it used to be two decades ago.

People need to blame the scalpers. They had a huge hand in this stop hand washing it away. There are still places where you can’t get it in store Because Of the scalpers😊
The developers, reminds me of the EA and Dead Space 3 which had to sell 5 million copies, or it was game over, which It was.
The issue is that a lot of people went and bought the ps5 during covid, and once covid ended, a lot of people just never went back to their ps5 consoles.

Sony was perfectly happy letting scalpers control the market too foolish to see that would impact software sales and attachment rates

I was playing FF13 earlier on my S (yes Xbox) and I think it looks great, not sure where I was going with that.
FF games plays like tells of games, and star ocean . It's a bunch of rinse and repeat.

Female fan here. I was always a bit more on the casual gaming side and even I'm sick of what's going on in the industry.
Gaming is abit too corporate nowadays. To me, it's the indie scene that's really doing new, creative and different things. On a side note, I saw somewhere that Ninjatheory (studio behind Hellblade) may be trying to escape Microsoft and go solo. Honestly I hope it's true and that they accomplish it.
You shouldn’t have said that you were a casual. Between that and being a woman, these ghouls are going to tear you apart.
@@stevenwasik3369 Well hopefully not. I've been checking out RGT's videos since early 2023 and from what I've seen, his fan base seem to have some bit of common sense lol
@@natnat8393 Which fans are those? The ones advocating piracy, the ones calling him a fence-riding grifter, or the ones calling him a misinformed Nintendo shill clickbaiter?
Yep, indies are the last true gaming indutrie, I've got a lot of physical devolver games that make me happy (and yes, physical, cause I want to contribute to those have talents for making games)
@stevenwasik3369 good point 😂😂😂
The irony been foamstars is a Splatoon ripoff lol
Stop with all the gloom and doom. We just need to slow the push on graphic demands. We should have never started doing the mid-gen Pro systems. As much as I would like a PS5 Pro, if it would slow the exponential cost for development I could do without one. Games are about fun. Many of my favorite games recently were on Switch.
Imagine if we would have just went from PS4 to PS5. They could have done a much smaller nicer looking system that focused on 1440p 60fps and saved ray-tracing for PS6.
The PS5 is versatile and majority of games don't take advantage of the hardware that's there.
