  • Since making his name in British cult classic Withnail and I in 1987, Richard E Grant has been a much-loved fixture on our screens. But when his beloved wife, Joan, died in 2021 after almost 40 years together, he faced his greatest challenge yet. In a bid to deal with his grief and to honour his promise to her to ‘find a pocketful of happiness in each day’, lifelong diary-keeper Richard turned his journal entries into a memoir. He joins us to tell us more about his book, gives us the lowdown on his upcoming tour and how he felt hosting the BAFTAs with Alison.

I’ve shared many of his experiences after the death of my husband from cancer 3 years ago, also named Richard. This man is such a beautiful person. Writing the book and sharing stories on social media is all part of his process of grief, and will undoubtedly help others. Bless him.

American here. What a beautiful man, with a very moving story. I don't know who he is, actually; however, I'm definitely getting his book. He's one of those people who make you want to know more about them and their journey.

Seeking that pocketful every day can either change your mindset or keep you on the positive track.
I know him mostly from Posh Nosh. Such a lovely person

He has always been one of my favourites. I watched him on the factual show Write Around the World where he read and explained great novels that were written by various writers. He is a writer too. He is also a dear friend of Magda Szubanksi. He is honouring his wife’s wish and also helping others by writing the book on how to cope loosing a loved one and that is what a lot of people do to remember, some even record their thoughts and memories and there is nothing wrong with that. I love the fact he wears two watches, one with Swatzi time given to him by his father and that’s a great way to honour a loved one too.

Not sure about the ethics of publishing a diary/book about the terminal diagnosis of one’s partner for personal financial gain.

You don’t have to be sure because that’s his business not yours. He does have a private life and is not accountable to the public because he’s not a public possession even though he’s a public figure.

I feel sorry for him. He's clearly struggling with his mental health due to the grief of losing his wife. He looks like he is about to cry. He's not stable to act and so has profited from his wife's death via this book to give him income, otherwise, be difficult to pay the bills and mortgage. Don't agree with it but it's his life.

Profiting off your spouse's death is really pathetic.

If you listen properly he promised his wife to find a pocketful of happiness each day and if you educated yourself on R E Grant you would know he is a prolific reader of book. He is simply sharing his thoughts and experiences. Your the pathetic one with your spiteful comment.
