    Hi TMF - newish to the channel. Really enjoy and appreciate the content especially the reviews. Thank you for reviewing the BMW S1000XR. I recently purchased the 2020 model. BMW spec the bikes a little different in Australia - I ended up with the “Tour” version which I think is the “TE” version in the UK with the addition of fog lights and luggage mounts. I was coming from a 1999 Honda VFR800 great bike and loved touring with that sweet engine. In comparison the XR is a totally different machine. Bike tech has come a long way in 20 years😎👍. Agree with your list on things to like about the XR. I can’t quite believe how well this bike handles. The way it carries the weight and the sharpness in its ability to change direction is amazing. Personally I would have added its braking ability - pretty confidence inspiring and super stable without a massive amount of fork dive. I was tossing up between the XR the Triumph Tiger 900 - so glad I went with the XR. I think if you are coming from a sports or sport touring background and you are now a little bit older and looking for a more comfortable riding position without sacrificing the sports bike performance and “grin” the XR ticks all the boxes.

      Hi Craig, im the same as you, looking at coming away from my 02 Vtec VFR 800, and I have been looking at ninja 1000sx, BMW F900XR and 1000XR, far prefer BMWs, great to see this on with the luggage on, and reds deffo the colour to go for I think. When I buy it will be nearly a year old ex-demo perhaps bike so hoping save a little..but I will miss the VFR. TMF has also ridden the F900XR, but not on a long term I do not think? be interesting to hear his comparison to the 2 models?

    • @craigwalker3063
      @craigwalker3063 Před 3 lety +1

      John Andrews - Hey John.... Am really enjoying the XR so haven’t missed the VFR as much as I thought I would. My wife rides and we are looking at updating her bike. Looking at the BMW F900XR and the Triumph Tiger 900 GT. Test rode the BMW - very capable bike, quite light handling wise and nice linear torque - the quick shifter was not as smooth as the S1000XR though. Looking forward to test riding the Triumph - reviews are good and it does come with a lower version (760mm - 780mm) which she likes. Can’t get a seat height that low on the BMW F900XR. BTW I saw a decent long term F900XR review on “Nothing to “Prove” channel which was pretty thorough 👍. Do like the review format that TMF provides especially likes and dislikes 👌

    Great video, sat watching this gave me goose bumps and a rye smile as I’m out on my XR 2017 model on Sunday, I’m quite sure when you peeled the throttle back you could see the enjoyment you were having. The breaks are phenomenal on mine sounds like they haven’t diminished on the new one. Not ready for a swop yet still enjoying mine. Nice video and look forward to the rest of your takes on the bike.

    Nice round up! I currently own the previous model S1000XR and have test ridden the new one and I'd have to agree with your choices for the most part. For me the word I'd use to describe the difference would be 'refined'. Styling changes aside, they've basically refined the bike. Vibes have been reduced, the engine doesn't feel as aggressive (altho its just as fast) and the electronic suspension has been tuned. My only gripes are that the seat is not as comfortable as the previous model and the colour choices (there are currently only 2) are totally uninspiring (this has recently been remedied with the announcement of the M Sport model, which looks amazing).

    What an Aladdin's cave of a garage you have there in that opening sequence... I'm very jealous (I don't even have a garage at all!). You made some very good points although I do have some reservations about the TFT. You often praise the BMW one, but surely, with a TFT the size of a small television, it could incorporate the sat nav, rather than having something which looks like a Curry's showroom in front of you.

Outside of the look and the extra horses, what are the main differences when riding. Also I know a S1000RR and even the S1000R are not really fun to ride in cities (50km/h), those bikes call for faster riding. Is it the same with the 1000XR? Thx a lot. Cheers

    I own one and made 3500 km so far. I also test drove one for 200km before buying it. I agree with everything you said except the quickshifter. On both 2020 S1000 XRs I rode the quickshifter was/is not as good as on my 2019 XR. downshifts are a lot smoother on the old model. I also found the black plastik tank cover a bit scratchy. Other than that the bike is really great.

    I ride a 2015 S1000XR and love it - might be time to upgrade! On mine, unlike the GS, there is no lockable system for the GPS. I've had to adapt a Touratech holder to fit the XR just so I don't have to remove the GPS every time I park it. Looks like the 2020 model is the same - which seems a big oversight 5 years on? Would also love to see some footage of the panniers - fitting/removing, locking system, loading etc. while you've got the bike. Cheers!

    Be very wary about "thrashing" around the Alps - especially in Switzerland as the fuzz over there are taking speeding pretty seriously with hefty fines and immediate on-the-spot bans! Could very easily ruin your European Tour. My recommendation would be the B500 in the Black Forest.

    What can I say about this bike without been able to ride it? Nothing, I totally rely on you.
    It’s an allroad bike with 1000 cc, big screen, luggage capacity, comfortable, enough safety electronics. So to me it’s almost the perfect bike. Almost because it’s quite expensive, too powerful and I probably can’t reach the floor with (almost) flat feet. There are other allroad bikes that can do more or less the same (with a bit less power) but are cheaper like the Suzuki V-Strom 1050, the Kawasaki Versys 1000, Triumph Tiger.

    Just test drove one alongside the R1250gs rallye but much preferred the gs. I agree about the handling on the xr but found the engine mostly unusable as you mainly get its power at high revs but no sooner have you got any revs you’re breaking the speed limit. Even though the xr has more power I found the gs felt quicker. But that just be me

      If passenger comfort is a high priority then you should also look at the RT especially if your looking to go places on your bike. It may be classed as a tourer but handling wise it doesn't handle like a big barge. I had the R1200RS and loved it but with a top box fitted the mrs really didn't get on with the upright stance it forced her into.

    • @PCERules
      @PCERules Před 3 lety

      Steve Cade have tried an older RT before but even with the low seat I found it a bit big. I’m not the tallest and wonder if that plays into as the the bars on both the RS and F900 seemed a lot closer but I wouldn’t knock many modern bikes especially the RT - having gone abroad and seen many - all those owners can’t be wrong!

    • @stevecade857
      @stevecade857 Před 3 lety +1

      @@PCERules I actually find the RT to be a low bike but the seat is quiet wide (for comfort) so that would make things more difficult reaching the ground. You should have a look at KTM Superduke GT and the Kawasaki ZX1000SX if you would like something sporty and still need to take a pillion and don't mind getting your spanners out to adjust the chain and lube it. They were both on my list when I got my RS.

    Now as I'm sure you know I'm a Triumph fanboy, but currently, if I had the cash and the space, I'm thinking I'd pick the Beemer. I really don't like the "lumpy" T plane crank triple in the Tiger 900, give me a 120 degree firing order triple anyday.

Lighter than a GS, substantially more powerful, dream gearbox and quick-shifter, comfortable, good screen protection, ultra smooth 4 pot engine, are BMW working towards ending production of the GS/GSA? It must be sickening for them that they still sell so many. A trans-continental Tourer to lick the GS? Nope. Barn Door size crud-catching exposed radiator. Chain drive aaaaaggggghhhhhh. But still an amazing bike. If my money was no object, this would be my dream every day bike. Look forward to your deliberations as to whether the GS has become too agriculturally long in the tooth.
