Sicario gave me goosebumps by the end. Kids playing soccer while gunfire is heard in the distance. No matter who you take down, the madness will never end. Bleak ending. Great stuff.

The ending of Moonlight is very touching. Kevin's reaction to Chiron unapologetically opens up about who he is. It's like Kevin saying to him "I'm proud of you". Then their embrace and cutback to young Chiron to finish it all is spectacular.

I'm a big fan of bleak and/or abrupt endings. Some of my favorites without spoilers: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (both actually), The Fly (1986), Midsommar, Rosemary's Baby, Taxi Driver, Apocalypse Now (theatrical), Chappie, Clockwork Orange, Donnie Darko, First Man, Pan's Labyrinth, Parasite, Possession, Kill Bill Vol. 2. Invasion takes the cake for me. I wish it wasn't such an iconic ending and I could have experienced it blind. Chilling. Especially with silence for the credits.

My favourite is probably still Pacino taking De Niro's hand as he lies dying at the end of Heat (because he knows somehow he'd do the same for him).
Another that no one has mentioned here is the Jonathan Glazer movie Birth with Nicole Kidman mentally imploding in a wedding dress by the ocean after having been knocked back into a state of grief by what appears to now be just a stupid child. Though I love how the film appears to answer it's own central mystery and then subtley undermines the answer just given to sow a seed of doubt in the audience's mind.

TCM Stunning ending. I saw it in a theatre in the 70s. And they don't have a lot of credits at the end. The lights come up and you stand up stunned. What just hit you? Brilliant.

Idk if End of Evangelion is cheating or not since it's more of a finale to the series and it doesn't really work as a stand alone movie, but my god is that last scene tonally perfect. It's the kind of ending that could pretty much have infinite interpretations and still work thematically. I like to see it as Shinji attempting to apply what he just learned and "take care of himself", but he does so in the darkest way possible. Then Asuka touches his face to allow him to recognize what he's doing from a more humane point of view so he stops. The scene shows Shinji try and fail to find happiness once again, which is realistic considering that overcoming depression is no cakewalk. But it still manages to leave a ray of hope with the idea that people always have a chance to find happiness as long as they're still alive. It's definitely one of the most memorable final scenes out there.

It might not be my absolute favorite ending, but one that comes to mind is the final scene of Christian Petzold's PHOENIX. The whole film builds to this musical performance where we finally witness the rebirth and self-actualization of the main character, Nelly. The way that scene is paced and edited is just perfect, and the performances drive everything home so beautifully. Nelly's initial hesitation and nervousness that shifts into absolute confidence and power, contrasted with Johnny becoming completely paralyzed by the same realization. And that final shot of her walking out of frame into the blazing, sunlit doorway is truly a mic drop moment.
Petzold is a master at ending his films, pretty much all of his movies (even the less compelling ones overall) manage to find the perfect note to end on.

The Hunt (2012 not the horrible 2020 one) has an amazing ending imo. Having someone indistinguishable shoot at Mads Mikkelsen after we think his life is back to normal is perfect for the message and story of the film. The rifle's endless ammo continues as the boy (now a nerve-fried, war-beaten soldier) snarls and erupts with animus...all spliced with real footage showing the World Wars in reverse. All the destruction is remedied and all lives replenished in the archive reversal. Shot after shot into the painting, the 20th century's darkness hour is erased with a rewind button ... until the trigger-finger stalls ... on a picture of a little baby sitting in his mother's lap. No more shooting. Just tears. Baby Hitler, innocence, a future of choices to make which he will eventually f*ck up ☝

McCabe & Mrs. Miller: The anti-western masterpiece sees the main character in a snowblind showdown with hired guns simply because he refused to bend the knee to Big Business. McCabe, with the help of Mrs. Miller, created something out of nothing, turning a small village offering the bare minimum into a thriving township well on its way to becoming a significant destination on the map. But the ending shows the heartbreaking split-story of the entire townsfolk frantically attempting to save a burning church while McCabe battles for his life against 3 angels of death seeking to take what he co-built. There is no denying the power of the contrast between the masses hurrying with water in an attempt to salvage an unsalvageable BUILDING, a symbol of the absence of God, while not coming to the aid of the flesh-and-blood BUSINESSMAN that raised the public out of squalor and gave them a taste of "what could be" ... Meanwhile, Mrs. Miller is the only one thinking about her partner, knowing his ultimate fate to come and retreating to the hallucinatory comfort of an opium den, all set to the haunting soundtrack of Leonard Cohen.
