I have a persistent issue with slag inclusion in my stick welding... What did you mean by the start above your weld to burn off the slag? I often find it'll weld an inch nice then, porous shite, then back to nice again

So when you fire up the rod initially it may leave a little porosity or tiny bit of slag because you just fired up the rod and it doesn’t have sufficient gas coverage immediately. So in order to help with that, you always start about a half inch or so ahead of where you want to start your weld, drag it back to the starting place and then begin welding over that area and continue your bead to burn out the little bit of porosity. Try to keep your rod in the puddles and don’t long arc your rod where it shoots out a flame like a torch and starts to sound like your gouging because that could cause lack of gas coverage also and could potentially cause porosity
