    Hi Dave your recent posts are like depressive Scandinavian plays from 100 years ago where the Rickenbacker acts a metaphor for life and the protagonist ends up suicidal. Ingmar Bergman then filmed the play in black and white in the 60’s. Fear if you go live the devil will contact you with the resolution to the nut string bridge problems, but at what cost.
    Keep well and happy. Great channel.

    Ricks are quirktacular. In the past, I've simply flipped a problem saddle over (bottom is now the top), filed the new top round, and cut new string slots. The old slots rest against the bridge plate and you can't see 'em. In a few cases, I've made new saddles from 1/8" flat stock. They do NOT pay us enough, brother!

    Has anyone from Rickenbacker ever contacted you about your videos of you fixing their guitars? Or....Correcting their mistakes? Its weird how expensive their guitars are, then these problems pop up. I have watched your Ric repairs and I'm like , Wow. You figure, for 2-5 grand, their guitars would be flawless
    I do enjoy watching these videos. I learn a lot from them. I plan on building my own Rickenbacker type guitar soon. Yes, it's best to build your own instead of buying something that will cost you in the long run.

    If I were getting a new nut put on a Rickenbacker 12-string, I would reverse the order of each string pair so the octave string comes second, and reverse the bridge saddles around to accommodate it.
    I might also get a zero-fret made for it, so the nut slots would only need to be concerned with getting the string spacing right, while the zero-fret would handle the height. (The Burns 12-string electric guitars from the '60s all used zero-frets.)

  • @truckasaurus
    @truckasaurus Před 6 lety

    I think the strings are pushed toward the bass side because the saddle grooves s are offset from the thru-screw hole. Flipping everything around would move all the strings north. You could leave as-is and cut new grooves on the other side of the screws. Would leave orphan grooves behind, but wouldn't require buying new saddles/bridge.

    Dave, I'm one of those guys that WAS enamoured with Rickenbackers. 4001, 4004, and the electric 12 strings. Still love the sound of them, but I never bothered to look at the engineering behind them, and the price was already prohibitive.
    If the bridges were replaced with a Babicz, the nut replaced with graphite, the frets replaced witb stainless steel, the fretboard cleaned off of all that thick lacquer, would the electronics still have to be overhauled as well? I know the pickups are artifacts, but are they wired to quality pots and wired properly out of the box?

  • @markchip1
    @markchip1 Před 6 lety

    I was surprised that the slots are cut in line with the neck and not angled between that and the angle off towards the tuners... Why isn't this the norm?

  • @rdubyaB
    @rdubyaB Před 6 lety

    I briefly owned a Rickenbacker 360/12 but couldn't get along with the narrow neck. I sold it before I had to deal with any setup or string change issues, thank goodness. I still have a Ricky six-string and that's enough for me.

  • @DeadKoby
    @DeadKoby Před 6 lety

    The more modern RIC bridge has a "knife edge" on it as opposed to the round-over, with just a knick to align the string. The one Dave is working in is different than mine here.

    Did the owner want to keep the strings in the "wrong" orientation (i.e. octave string first?). It seems like it would've been better all the way around if you restrung it the "right" way, like a normal 12 string.

    • @dbvetter7485
      @dbvetter7485 Před 5 lety +1

      It wired that Rickenbacker 12 string octave strings are opposite of every other 12 string guitar.

  • @donaldwolpert6356
    @donaldwolpert6356 Před 6 lety

    Rickenbacker 12-strings are normally strung with the normal string is hit prior to the octave string on the down-strum. Which, of course, is reversed from other 12-string guitars. I noticed on some live performances of the Beatles, George Harrison had to up-pick his solos on the songs using that Ric 12-string. Unless the owner wants to convert it to a normal 12-string, I wouldn't waste time rebuilding it.
