About the fire hydrants: you can have similar ones in Appleton (Wisconsin), they're just a little bit darker and have black nozzles while in Indianapolis the nozzles will be turquoise. Also a good niche clue for Appleton!

I was a firefighter in central Wisconsin… Appleton uses 4 different colors of fire hydrants, and they indicate the amount of flow rate at that specific hydrant. You’ll find them colored red, orange, green, and blue, and a mixture of yellow hydrants with the caps just colored in the aforementioned color options. However, this is something that is being used throughout the country now.

@@CalsVPN True, there are different types of hydrants in Appleton. However, the blue one is special as it is only found there and could be used to guess the city.

About the black signs atop stop signs in SC, you will only find those at intersections with state roads. That's what the S stands for. Counties sometimes put something like C-47 on their street signs which would just stand for County Road 47. Some counties used to use the black and white style for their county roads (I know Anderson County was one) but nothing new put up by them since the 70's or 80's. Either way, any black and white sign over a stop sign is SC. Just helpful to know the how to find the road numbers in case you want to 5K.

About the black and white signs on top of SC stop signs, 99.9% of those will be for state roads only. A handful of counties (Anderson being one I have seen) used to put them on county roads as late as the 60's or 70's. These county erected signs look very similar to the state ones, with the same format and information. The road numbers at the end of all of the signs are often shown on Google Maps.

As an Oregonian. . . .another method to distinguish Oregon from Washington are speed limit signs. Oregon is the only state where you can find speed limit signs which simply say "SPEED" rather than the more common "SPEED LIMIT." Oregon has been on a campaign to gradually phase out these "SPEED" signs. Nonetheless "SPEED" signs are diagnostic for Oregon.
