Just a tiny clarification, bro. 10:52 you’re right about him transforming into other characters and creatures, but in the JTW legend, transforming into a giant monkey is part of his own ability. Like how in dragon ball, goku and the sayans transform into a giant monkey under the full moon - they got that all from monkey king.

This is the great great great grandfather of Dragon Ball. Naruto? I love Naruto but journey to the west was written in Yuan dynasty and the myth happened in Tang Dynasty. That’s like hundreds or even thousands years ago...So sorry Naruto, there’s no place for you.

The shadow clone jutsu we know in NARUTO was actually inspired by the original Wukong,
In the book "Journey to the West", Wukong was a disciple of a great sage who taught him all these abilities,
one of his famous tricks is to pluck a handful of his own fur and imbue magic into it by blowing them out to make his clones to outnumber his foes.
A funny detail about this trick is that depending on the length of the hair, the strength of the clones also differs, longer hairs turn into clones with the same staff he wields, shorter hairs turn into clones bare handed using punch and kicks, and even shorter hairs turn into chibi which jump on the enemy to bite and claw them.

This game seems to be based on a classic journal called "the journey to the west". The journal described a story that the monkey king and three other friends escorted the "Monk of Tang" to the world of Buddha, and seek for the "real wisdom". The money king became the "the Buddha of fight and victory" because of his contributions in the journey.
In this video, the old monk mentioned two possible ending for the monkey king: Some people say he became "the Buddha of fight and victory" , while others say someone murdered him and took his place. This may be an important line in the game. This line comes from some old arguments about the novel.
The monkey king has the highest fighting capacity in the team, but he is reckless and don't have any mercy, while the leader of their team--"monk of tang" has wisdom and mercy. So they have some major disagreements. In the first half of the journey, monkey king always disobey the order of "monk of tang", and tried to leave the team.
In the 57th of the journal, another monkey, the Six-ear Macaque wanted to replace the monkey king. The Six-ear Macaque is also very powerful and he transformed to the shape of monkey king Wukong, and on one could tell the difference between the true and the fake monkey king. They fighted each other , but on one can win. At last they came to the buddha (the original and the most powerful one). And the buddha recognized the fake one and killed the six-ear Macaque.
Here comes the problem: The buddha is the only one who can distinguish the fake monkey king, if he killed the true monkey king，either in purpose or by mistake， it would be the fake monkey king who became the "the Buddha of fight and victory". More importantly, he may have the motivation to do that. This journey was originally designed by him. The first aim of journey is to spread the word of him to the Tang dynasty, and the members of this team could gain KPIs and became governors of the buddha-land. (By the way, Buddha is the mentor of the "monk of Tang" ). If the monkey king refuse to follow the order, then he may become a real threat to the buddha-land, especially when he had more power. In this case, it's not bad to replace him with a fake, but submissive monkey,right?
This is kind of a conspiracy theory, which could either be proved right or wrong. But they tried to find some indirect evidence in the book. Eg, The monkey king became more submissive after the chapter, and the characteristics of the real monkey king are not likely to change so fast, so the true monkey king must have been replaced, While others say, in that chapter, the Buddha promised to the money king that after the journey, he could become another buddha, which could explain his change of attitude.
Back to the video, we could see the appearance of the money king with his "As-You-Wish Gold-Banded Cudgel". So I guess the player may be another monkey who worship the Monkey king, a previous follower of him, or the soul of the dead monkey king. The player may gradually reveal the myth of the journey and find the true identity of the "the Buddha of fight and victory". Maybe a dark, cruel and soul-like story is waiting to be revealed·····

Some people think the Monkey King you’re playing as is the fake one and the one that blocked your attack is the real one. The dialogue in the game hints twice that you (the player) is the “second monkey”, so that begs the question, who is the first monkey?
Well, the Monkey King that blocked your attack; his staff says RuYi JinGu Bang which is the Monkey King’s original staff, making him the real one, not to mention he is wearing the Phoenix armor that the original wore too.
Furthermore, evidence that this is the real Monkey King is that the staff he uses to block your attack is gold and red which is something you see on almost every version of his original staff. The staff that you (the player) wield, is red and black, different from most original depictions, but still has the same abilities it seems.

Chinese mythology is a very complex system. I can explain the basic concept of the chinese mythology.
First the structure of chinese pantheon. Chinese traditional mythology is called Taoism. But after Buddhism come to China, it got absorbed by Chinese pantheon. The supreme god king governing heaven in taoism is jade emperor. But the one who created the universe was the ancient titan pangu. Pangu died from exhaustion soon after he creates the universe. The jade emperor and three pure one control most of the universe after him. They assigned king Yama to govern the underworld. Four great dragon kings to govern the sea. But they all pledge loyalty to jade emperor. Great goddess Nuwa creates humanity after the creation of the world. Buddha is technically the most powerful entity after the death of pangu. Because Buddhism believe he is one with universe. Therefore both Buddhism god and taoism god show respect to each other, and often work together.
Second is the power structure of chinese mythology. The biggest difference between Chinese mythology and western mythology. Is the fact that in Chinese mythology, mortal can become god by practicing taoism or Buddhism. Which many western mythology can’t. This gives people more hope and give them reason to study taoism and Buddhism. However this freedom also give birth to demon(youkai). In chinese the concept of demon is not the same as west. Chinese demon were once mortal creatures who practiced Taoism or Buddhism. They use the power in evil way and became corrupted. This goes for animal too. Both human and animals have possibilities of becoming demon. That’s why in journey of west there are tiger demon or fish demon. Due to the fact all youkai Practice taoism or Buddhism. In chinese mythology demon are considered very intelligent beings. Also most demon aim to become god, because in chinese mythology gods are the final stage of evolution.
Now we can talk about monkey king wukong and journey of the west. Monkey king is the hero in chinese mythology. He’s just like Thor in Norse mythology or Hercules in Greek. Monkey king was loved by chinese people. But monkey king wasn’t a righteous figure when he first appeared. Monkey king was a stone monkey who came from the magical stone of goddess nuwa. He was a trickster and a morally neutral existence. He soon became the king of monkeys and learn taoism under a great Taoist saint. During the process he learn immortality and become so powerful that almost no god can beat him. After he gain such strength, he went to the dragon king palace and acquired weapons and armor. Went to underworld and delete his name from book of death. He soon make alliance with demon kings in the mortal realm. Making him one of the greatest demon king in existence. When jade emperor discovered this, he give wukong a job in heaven. Which wukong gladly accept. But jade emperor still didn’t quite understand how strong wukong is. So he give him a position as stable boy for taming heavenly horses. Wukong feels extremely humiliated. So he quit the job and give him self the title of great sage equal to heaven in revenge. Heaven sees wukong’s refusal of the job as an insult. But after long discussion, they give wukong the title of great sage equal to heaven and invite him once more to live in heaven. As guardian of immortal peach garden. But monkey screw up his job again, because he end up eating all the peaches and even steal some pills of immortality. That finally angered the jade emperor. He dispatched the entire army of Heaven to arrest wukong. Monkey king was unrivaled in power even for gods. Only the great warrior god Erlang could fight him in equal strength. They eventually did capture the monkey through trap, but can’t find any way to kill him. Because he’s so bloody immortal, nothing can hurt him. He eventually break loss again and causing even greater havoc in heaven. Jade emperor finally calls the buddha himself to fix the problems. Buddha being the strongest beings in existence, easily subdue wukong, and trap him under a magical mountain. 500 years later Buddha send a chinese monk name Xuan Zang to retrieve the holy scripture from India. He choose wukong as one of monks body guards. Finally wukong was freed from the prison. But this time he humbly protect the monk in his journey to the west. During the process he starts to respect the monk. Also becoming a more humble and righteous person. He eventually was reworded by the Buddha and become a Buddha himself.

Almost everything you said is same as what I remembered but one: I think it wasn't the Buddha who chose Xuan Zang to travel to India for the scripture, it was the Emperor of Tang Dynasty. And the Budda whose name is GuanYin (or GuanShiYin) guided Xuan Zang to find and free WuKong, and assigned WuKong as one of the three bodyguards to protect XuanZang along his Journey

As a Chinese player I am totally amazed. 西游记（The Journey to the West) is a classic Chinese novel which has profound cultural implications, and the dream of becoming 孙悟空（the protagonist, aka 齐天大圣）is deeply embeded in almost every Chinese kid's heart. 孙悟空 is brave, loyal, recalcitrant, and most importantly, he has flaws just as everyone else. I almost burst into tears when the music starts at the end of this trailer. That is the cultural gene of Chinese.
I can't wait to play this, I was waiting for a game developer to developed a game from chinese myth and I hope this would be epic like the god of war.

The console game industry of China is not as developed as that of US after all. Plus they are recruiting at the end of this trailer, so I guess they are short-handed.

If they did the origin story for the Monkey King, it’s basically God of War 3, Wu Kong fights a one man war against the gods.

Yok Gor obviously the complete Wukong Story with at least 81 chapters, which means 81 challenges on the journey, has more content than God of War3.
I hope neither game producers nor we players are too ambitious for now. It's totally fine that they make this into 2 or even 3 parts serie to tell the whole story gradually and in this way is more likely to keep its quality.

if you read the journey to the west, (manga?/manhua) wukong is prominent in and most known for. He has a form which is similar to the big apes that the Sayians turn into(as we seen in the video) he also dies during the journey and is reincarnated with golden hair and a golden tail etc he looks very much like a super sayian.

I just realized that the old man narrating is most likely the Sun Wukong telling his own story in disguise, because that's a very Sun Wukong thing he'd do.
Also this has to be one of the best gameplay showcase of this year for a game in development. A few things I do hope they show more of is Wukong traversing the areas via a cloud and possibly more agility when he's on foot, some parkour showcasing possibly.
There is a commenter from another video say that old man is actalually Wu Kong when he became Buddha.
If you know the "Journey to the West", Monkey King's story within it and Chinese mythology universe, this game goes to the next level of pleasure and excitement : )
Some basic things about Wu Kong (i.e. Sun Wukong, aka Monkey King) to help you understand some of the actions and things you see in the clip:
- Wu Kong was 'born' from The rock. (And the rock has background story where it comes from in
the Chinese mythology universe)
- Wu Kong went to learn how to be immortal for his fellow monkeys (eventually only learnt Kung Fu and skills/magic) from a 'god'. He can change into 72 forms of things/animals and can ride 'Jin Dou Cloud' (i.e. fly)
- He has learnt from his master (the god I mentioned above) that he can turn his hair/fur into clones of himself to fight the enemies;
- After he learnt his skills, he went back to his 'home town' and stayed with his fellow monkeys (they are normal monkeys).
- He could not find a suitable weapon for a while. Later he got (snatched) his weapon 'Ru Yi JIn Gu Bang' (the staff) from one of the Dragon King's palace (his friends told him that dragon king has got a large collection of weapons). The staff can become
bigger than skyscraper (or infinity big) or as small as a needle. To carry it easily, Wu Kong keep it in his ear. This is why you see he take it out and put it into the 'side of his head'. (This staff is not just a staff it has background story where it comes from)
- He also removed his own name from the 'Life and Death Registry Book' when he was taken to the underworld according to the fate recorded in this book.
- He has a famous battle with gods and their armies (because what his has done and the heaven failed to 'convert' him, they didn't treat him fair enough) and almost defeat all of them until Buddha take him down.
- After he was trapped under a mountain for 500 years (he becomes almost immortal be cause he has eaten several magical/heavenly food and
medicines during the battle with heaven), he was released to protect the monk Tang San Zang to go to the West (India) to get/learn the Buddhist scrolls back to ancient China. During this journey, He and his master San Zang has to overcome 81 challenges before they successfully return the ancient capital of China.
- Because the monsters on the route heard the rumour that anyone who has eaten Wu Kong's master Tang San Zang will be become immortal, so every monster tried to capture Tang San Zang when he pass their territory. And Wu Kong and two other followers of Tang San Zang have to defeat all the monsters during the journey.
- After they meet the Buddha and get the scrolls, Wu Kong was promoted to one of the buddha. (The old monk in the clip should be in this form)

Wukong 悟空 was the monastic name given to the monkey when he submitted himself to Tripitaka's tutelage in the fable Journey to the West. His moniker prior to that was Great Sage Equalling Heaven 齐天大圣，bestowed by the Jade Emperor to pacify him from wreaking more chaos in the celestial plane.
Like all great Chinese classics (The Water Margin 水浒, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 三国, Investiture of the Gods 封神榜 etc), you have to learn to read between the lines to derive the true meaning of the story for yourself.

prototype character of Goku in dragon ball. Toriyama designed Sun Goku based on Sun Wukong (the central character of the Chinese novel Journey to the West). And Wukong and Goku are the exactly same , just Wukong is Chinese pronunciation and Goku is Japanese pronunciation

The company is called "Game Science" and located in Hangzhou China and they are hiring more technical guys to accomplish this huge game. I think we still need to wait for about two years until the final game is finished well.
Another monkey in armor, the stick with five letters written on it, "the Golden Band of Ruyi", this stick of origin from a very interesting story: in the story of "Journey to the West" this weapon, originally belonged to an important object in the palace of the East Sea Dragon King, it serves to stabilize the sea conditions in the East Sea, and later seized by Sun Wukong. Sun Wukong loved this weapon, and from then on the "Ruyi Golden Hoop Stick" became his standard configuration.

As a Chinese, I have to say I've been waiting for this game my entire life. and I feel obligated to explain the gist of the story for people to get a better understanding of the game and enjoy the details and game as a Chinese person would.
First a bit of a background context for those who are not familiar with the story, the game is based on one of the four greatest Chinese literature "Journey to the West", the book has been turned into TV series, movies, mobile games and has a monumental influence to the eastern culture. The TV series has been played on Chinese TV for over 3000 times, yes THREE THOUSAND times, making it one of the if not the most repeated series in history. Dragon Ball's Goku is inspired by the book, the main character in the game is Monkey King "Sun WuKong" who in the book wanted to overthrow the Emperor of the Heavens and become the ruler of the world. he eventually failed and was banished and imprisoned by Buddha under the "five finger mountain" for 500 years.
To redeem himself, the Buddha ordered him to protect a Monk to the west for the holy scrolls. they would eventually succeed and Monkey king will become the "Buddha warrior"
Now in the book and in the game, his main weapon is a staff that can change sizes at his will, when he is not using it he turns it into a needle which he then puts into his ear. the game demonstrates that really well.
his abilities also consist of 72 forms of shape-shifting, shadow clones, fly on a nimbus, and loads more.
In Chinese mythology, there are literally thousands of Gods, the old short guy we see in the demo is one of them called the "god of land"-- one of the lowest ranking Gods. he was warning Wukong not to go into the temple as there is a monster guarding it.
In the final montage. we see a number of monsters. the stand out for me would be the 4 titans we see, in the book, they are the "Four Greatest heavenly kings" sort of like the guardians of heaven. each has one unique weapon "Pipa(Chinese instrument )", "Sword", "A Python" and "Umbrella". that is the boss fight I am most excited about.
I can't wait for this game to be released.

to some who don't know, Son WuKong is a character from a Chinese myth novel 400 years ago called Journey to the West. In the myth, some of his powers include riding clouds, transforming (72 forms), that magical staff he wields can lengthen and shorten, he also hides it in his ears when it's tiny. When he tears off strands of his hair, each strand can turn into a clone of himself. Oh, and let's not forget he can freeze people with words. that's all i remember for the moment. but he's pretty dope!

To really understand the plot of this game, you need to know the plot of Journey to the West. Monkey King was born from one rock which was made to fill the broken sky but was not used. Two lights came out from his eyes which shocked the Jade Emperor (the Supreme God of Chinese folk legend). He then became the king of the monkeys in Flower Fruit Mountain where he was born. To get immortality, he left his home and found Grand Master of Bodhi, who taught him 72 methods of transformation, ways to drive clouds, and many other magics. Monkey King also got the religious name of Wu kong from Grand Master of Bodhi. After twenty years of apprenticeship, he came back to the Flower Fruit Mountain. To find a suitable weapon for himself, Monkey King made a havoc in the place of the Dragon King of the East Sea, and robbed Ruyi Jingu Bang, which was left by Dayu to control the flood (China also has a legend about an overwhelming flood, but it was stopped by a legendary emperor Dayu). Ruyi Jingu Bang is so large and heavy that no one can control, but Wu kong can use it and shrink down to the size of a needle and keep in his ear. When he was 342 years old, he was taken to the nether world, for the book of death stipulated that he can only live for 342 years. He was irritated and erased himself and all monkeys from the book of death. Then he and all monkeys became immortal. The Dragon King from of East Sea and the King of the nether world reported Wu kong’s misdeed to the Jade Emperor. The Jade Emperor gave him a minor position in heaven as the Keeper of Horses, so he can control him. When Wu kong realized that, he became angry, granted him as Great Sage Equal to Heaven, and rebelled. The Jade Emperor dispatched a general to suppress him, but the general was defeated. However, eventually, tathagata caught him and suppressed him under a mountain made by his hand. After 500 years, he was saved by Tang Sanzang who was going to the west to obtain the Buddhist scriptures. He then took Tang Sanzang as his master and went to the west with his master.
After you understand that, you will know my feeling when I see the golden inscription on the golden stick held by the Monkey who stopped the protagonist which says Ruyi Jingu Bang, and the golden armor which was always wore by Wukong when he is Great Sage Equal to Heaven. They indicate that the monkey is Wu kong. Wu kong is a symbol of rebellious spirit. For us Chinese who do not have Marvel of other cartoons, he is like the Captain America for the Americans. So my tears even flow down when I see the story of fight between Wu kong and 100,000 celestial troops is presented in a visible way and understand that I can experience the life of my hero in childhood.

The developers twist the story “The journey to the West” by adding story lines about the true identity of WuKong instead of following the original story in which there is only one WuKong. This is the reason why you guys see the old monkey telling you the story at the beginning of the game and also play as the young monkey king then finally stopped by the monkey king with mercy.
I get the point of view, but isn't it in the legend there was a story arc where wukong fighting another version of him that want to challenge him for becoming Xuanzang disciple in his journey? there's a view interpretation of it, a comic just made it double wukong, and a drama series made the challenging monkey a different monkey king ( forgot his name ) but in the end wukong defended his place as Xuanzang disciple.

Hi, I am from the future and let me tell you this game will release in Aug 20, 2023. This game will be epic!
Just visited the site, the game is still in creation process. They are hiring great skilled people all over the world to work on thus game, all the positions are located in China FYI. And it seems when it release, the game will be on all platforms PC, Xbox to PS. It will be a single player with possible DLC. The creator said will not have micro transactions, and is asking people to screenshot of that sentence to keep the creators in check.
Why here is another WUKONG? Here I wanna add some background and true hidden stories about WUKONG.
1，The true and false Monkey King is a chapter of Journey to the West, because the disobedient Wukong had a conflict with Tang Seng and knocked him down. However, in the the book, it is said that fake Wukong was the one who defeated Tang Seng, and no one can tell who is the real and who is the fake. Their combat effectiveness is also the same, and they even have the same weapon-the golden hoop.
In the end, the Buddha distinguished the real Wukong and the real Wukong killed the fake Wukong.
But here are 2 main explanations or real stories the book didnot tell.
First, The real Wukong was killed, and the fake Wukong continued to travel west. I will explain why there are such stories later.
Second,
there is only one Wukong in the whole story, but Wukong himself has contradictions. It is his own submissive side that killed his own rebellious side.
Now, I will explain why have such explanations and what WUKONG means for Chinese people.
Wukong was born from a stone between heaven and earth, without father and mother. His dream is to lead his monkeys to live happily in Huaguo mountain and hope to live forever, so he went to hell and tore up the book of life and death which means They can live forever. But this was not allowed by Gods, so he fought with one hundred thousand heavenly soldiers (this is the battle scene at the end of this video), and he was arrested. At last, he began his journey to the west. It is hard to tell the whole story here.
But the birth of Wukong represents a lawless person who resists the gods and pursues absolute freedom. He does not harm others, but he is still controlled and restricted by the gods.
He wants to break all the rules and restrictions on him. So, here is why Budda and gods wanna kill the true WUKONG, because they represent the rules and restrictions.
Some people say that this book is a story of a child growing up and becoming a man. This is a good ending.
Some people say that this is a tragedy, it is a story of us being assimilated and domesticated by society and rules. We were both Wukong when we were young, but as we grew up we discovered that we were restricted by various rules even if we did not authorize them to restrict us. In the end we had to become a part of this society, just like Wukong finally became a Buddha, that is the job given to him in this system.
Why does the old man in the video cry? I guess he is the old Wukong, and the true hero finally became an obedient "Buddha", but he still miss the other him----the true hero of his monkeys. It's like we have become a member of society, but the real we are actually the "wild monkey", we still yearn for absolute freedom, unfettered, just like a running wild monkey.
2, all the abilities and skills in the game are real abilities WUKONG have. His weapon is hidden in his ears because The golden hoop can be bigger and smaller.
3，The surname of WUKONG is SUN, the same with the author of: The Art Of War.
4, The cloud is actually his fly machine which given by his master.
Finally, my english is not very good, so I have no ability to tell the essence and spirit of this story. There is too much true meaning hidden in the story about us and about society.
If you want to understand this story, I suggest you read this book, and then read other people's interpretations or the dark side Journey to the West. You will understand the true meaning of the whole story.

A little bit of background info.
He is a monkey born out of a magic stone who gathered all the spirit of the world. And he went to the heavenly palace to learn all sorts of abilities, include the 72 transformation, the fire and golden eye which allows him to look through all the mists and disguise of other kinds of monsters, and also he uses one hair to create many of him. Then he went to the sea palace and got the stick guarded by the dragon king which was supposed to maintain the balance of the sea. And essentially he went to the west to fetch the Buddhist scriptures with the monk, the pig and the sand monster.
There is a lot about him all in the book Journey to the West.

Sun Wukong was born from the magic stone that resides Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. After his birth, he became the Monkey King. His ability can transform into 72 different animals and objects. Each of his hairs have transformative powers, and he can magically manipulate wind, water and fire as well. Wukong also search his suitable weapon until he acquired the Golden-banded staff, the stabilizer of the Four Seas and a treasure of Ao Guang, the dragon-king of the Eastern Seas. The Monkey King is the only creature strong enough to wield the staff-like weapon and there is an instant affinity between them. The Golden-banded staff can change its size, elongate, fly and attack opponents according to its master's will. It weighs 13,500 jīn or 7960 kg. When not wielding the weapon, the Monkey King shrinks it down to the size of a sewing needle and stores it in his ear. At first the Jade Emperor of the heaven was not interested in him, but he later invited him to the heaven where Wukong became 'Protector of the Horses', or stableman, which is the lowest ranking job in heaven. When Wukong discovered this, he was not happy and rebelled against the heaven, until the Buddha came who imprisoned Wukong under a mountain. 500 years later, a Buddhist monk, Tang Sanzang, or Tang Seng, released Wukong who became his disciple. my only criticism is a technical yet logical one: I feel the combat has no weight to it, like if u hit an enemy, he doesnt stagger or feel like their getting hit. What i liked about god of war, is that both enemies and the weapons have weight to them, and i believe with a bit, just a bit, of tweaking, this game would become more enjoyable. Overall, graphics always improve, but its the fine details i appreciate the most, so good luck to this game, and hope it meets our expectations and beyond.
there is stagger it just that during attack it way harder to stagger and i think there is heavy attack like that charge up staff swing which might be what use to stagger
and this is still pre alpha so we could only wait and hope nothing bad happen
