My daughter was doing this in crocheting mats for homeless people. They roll up very nicely, and they’re waterproof and they’re easy to carry. She made a strap to go over their shoulder.
Tbat is a very nice looking nag!! I have seen bags and other items made from plastic grocery sacks and they didn't look so nice I really have to say that yours looks really nice. It would be complementary to any casual outfit, such as going to the beach, running errands, Etc. Thank you for taking the time to share your craft and your talent and also a great way to repurpose plastic bags that would otherwise end up in the landfill! 😎You're a rockstar!!
Oh my goodness! My mom, God rest her soul, used to crochet kitchen rugs from plastic bread bags! I never knew anyone else did it! Thanks for the memories. Mom, you were the best. 😢
We had bare floorboards, and in winter, our house could easily be -5°C: It's not nice to walk on even with socks on! (Shoes were not allowed indoors for hygiene reasons. We had rag rugs made out of our old clothes, which mum used to cut during winter and then hire a communal loom during summer holidays. She would weave plarn mats for the kitchen and for under the dining table because they would be easy to wipe clean. But woven bags have the loom strings made out of cotton, so they were no good for the concrete bathroom floor on which we stood to shower: there 100% plarn was the only sensible solution. My mum used milk bags, which were black inside and white outside with text and graphics in red or blue, depending on the fat content. It would take forever to have enough plastic bags to cut because we reused them for shopping: they were not free. Plarn rugs made the fastest vessels to slide down on snow, although it was impossible to steer them.
@marymarsh2937 Yes, all the memories attached to the clothes lingering in the rugs. "I was wearing that blue 👗 when I had my first kiss"; "You tore those 👖 when you fell off the bike but found the diamond ring because of it and got a handsome reward" "These curtains were on the window when the distant cousin came to visit." Etc
My Grandmother use to make these totes out of Wonder Bread bags back in the 1960s. It is nice to see this craft coming back. I still have one of her tote bags. They last forever.😊
Mine did too but used every possible type plastic bag. These totes last forever. I still have some that are at least 25 years old. We called the "thread" she made "plarn."
I’m so excited, I can’t wait to try this! I literally love how you explain it, your so nice, and I feel like with the way you told us how to do it, that you genuinely wanted people to learn. You weren’t robotic, or talking to fast, like some people who only make the videos in hopes to become CZcams famous. Which is fine, but it’s nice to learn from somebody who seems to care! If that makes sense! Thank you!
I used to teach people how to do this for several years. Your presentation was exactly how I did it, practically word for word! Very nice. (One thing I realized, however, is that it helps if learners first have a working knowledge of crochet before they try using materials like plarn, t-shirt yarn, and fabric strips.) Using plarn is an excellent way to keep plastics out of the environment as well as backed-up recycling facilites. It is strong and long-lasting. Thanks for helping to keep this technique alive!
I'm a 41 year old man , but this is amazing. Also because it's plastic you wouldn't need to worry about any spills or leaking milk jugs , very easy clean up if you had something that leaked. Much love ❤️
I ❤️ LOVE TO CROCHET! When you run out of thread, you need to break out your clever skills. Your tutorial was awesome and very inspiring! In the past, I would start one, and when I had enough bags to keep me busy for a bit, then I would add to my bag. When the seasons change some stores change their colors to give you more creativity. My best bag was red white and blue. I can't even remember what store anymore. Very useful in the garden, pick your veggies and rinse them in the same bag. 😊😊😊Love the tutorial
I have been making these for a few years. Stores aren’t giving out plastic bags anymore, but I found a way to get them. Most stores have an area where they collect bags from the public to be recycled. Just ask the manager if you can have these. I have found that they are happy to have you take them off of their hands!
Have done this myself, in the past neighbours have been given me their bags, made several rain hats and ponchos for people going to music festivals etc also galoshes ( waterproof over shoes) 🙏
Here in Australia, the major supermarkets were collecting bags for recycling. Then a few months ago the company that was supposed to recycle them collapsed, leaving 15 tonnes of bags stockpiled around the country and now destined for landfill. If only i could have some!
My favorite hot pad was made this same way using a t-shirt instead of plastic bags. Perfect size for holding soup/stew bowl. I made a rug in front of my kitchen sink made this way, from plarn. It was soft to walk on & pleasant doing dishes.
I've learned a better way to connect the straps from you! More than that also. Hook size and hdc. Thank you! I always have these bags on hand. I love anything thrifty or recycled. You are a natural on camera, thank you!

I love your crocheting idea with the plastic bags. I have many bags now I learned how to make good use of them very handy. Thank you dear lady for your video it is very useful. 😊

I’ve been recycling since I was a teenager over 40 years ago (recycling wasn’t a thing back then but I now know that’s exactly what I was doing)going to second hand shops for clothes that I could upcycle by sewing and changing the garment with trims, paints embroidery etc. Even now that I have a little more money in my purse I never buy new. I absolutely love the bag and I think I will do some for Christmas presents since most folk nowadays love a bag for life. It’s beautiful, thank you for sharing ❤❤❤

Hi Bonusmom! I have yet to try one one these. I think I must now, for some reason your explanation of how to make it made it easier to try. I think I’ll be cut’n my strips today. Thank you 😊
Hi, my name is Karla and live in OK. I have been crocheting since I was a little girl. Now 62. Iam so glad that your video popped up on my home page as I love crocheting during the Winter Months and this is “genius “. I want to give it a try, wish you would show how to start the sides? I’ve not crocheted in the past few winters, as my mom and I I would crochet baby blankets and take to the hospital for the New Borns. I’m determined to crochet this winter, am excited to follow you. Your voice is so soft and relaxing. I hope that you will continue with showing how to start bring the sides up? I had a set of needles and cannot find them, so will have to purchase new ones. I started buying cut strips 1”-4” strips from a sewing factory and made beautiful baskets. I made o e for my office at the hospital and before I knew it, dr’s coming in and out fell in love with them and ended up saling several baskets, different sizes. I would take a long strip and make beautiful bows for base of the handles, soaking in starch to make them stand up and oh they all were beautiful. Made so so many for Thanksgiving and Xmas. Can’t wait to see what you’ve got coming up, and I thank YOU so much for your crocheting tutorials. Can’t wait to get started again.

Hi Bonusmom! I have yet to try one one these. I think I must now, for some reason your explanation of how to make it made it easier to try. I think I’ll be cut’n my strips today. Thank you 😊
I enjoyed watching this!
Excellent tutorial!! ❤
If you stop increasing stitches, the sides will naturally happen. I am crocheting rows in the round
I love it.. new to the channel. Liked and subscribed.. can't wait to start.. bag saving in overdrive now lol
