What happens if you end dwm.exe in different versions of Windows?

  • DWM stands for Desktop Window Manager.
    In Windows XP and earlier, applications render themselves directly to the screen in the order that are stacked, they also do this in Windows Vista and 7 if the basic or classic themes are selected. However in Windows Vista and 7 if the Aero theme is selected and in Windows 8 and above the applications render to an off-screen buffer which DWM then processes and renders to the screen. This allows for transparency, live thumbnails and animations.
    In Windows Vista and 7 DWM runs Aero. In Windows 8 and above, DWM runs the Metro UI and the general window skin and is mandatory. So what happens if you end dwm.exe in different versions of Windows?

    Note: On real computers, disabling DWM in windows 10 will result in the black screen immediately without even the mouse, completely bricking the installation. Trying to boot will result the boot logo partially working and then it will not even display the sign-in page, being stuck on a black screen forever. The only way to fix this is to rename the file back to dwm.exe

      If you renamed dwm.exe then you could boot in with a live Linux USB or Windows install disc and rename it back.
      If you deleted dwm.exe then if you have another PC running the same version of Windows 10 you could copy dwm.exe from that computer. If you have a VM running the same version of Windows 10 then you could copy dwm.exe from there. If you have an ISO then you could mount it to a virtual drive and go to the 'sources' folder and open install.win with 7-Zip and copy dwm.exe from there.

    • @madelaineb9073
      @madelaineb9073 Před rokem +1

      To get dwm back you need to enter the automatic repair which can be done by rebooting your computer 3 times, then, select command prompt then open notepad,select open, which will give you a file explorer, then go to system32 and find the dwm file, finally, you can rename dwm back to its original name.

    all recent versions of windows are forked from the last one (mostly 7 and 8.1) , one of the biggest proof is that when a ,for example, website takes info about the OS , even though it is W11, it will display WINDOWS NT 10.0.

    Why Microsoft changed the DWM so it runs under its own user and restarts as soon as you end it? I'll explain.
    *Why does it run under its own user?* Since Windows 8.x we have this fancy Metro UI, right, well, turns out the sign-in screen runs as a part of Metro UI. And Metro UI without DWM is nothing. That's why it runs under its own user - so DWM will be available at any time.
    *Why does it restart upon termination?* As I said earlier, Metro UI without DWM is nothing, so the DWM needs to run all the time.
    Even in Windows 10 and 11 which use UWP, the same rules about DWM apply.
