- ► Hello and welcome to our video on 10 interesting facts about Tchaikovsky, one of Russia's most celebrated composers and the first to be recognised internationally. His music is known for its emotional intensity and powerful melodies. Let's dive in and learn more about this musical genius!
► Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk in the Russian Empire, in 1840, into a family with a long history of military service. He began studying music at the age of five and went on to attend the St. Petersburg Conservatory, from which he graduated in 1865. The formal Western-oriented teaching that he received there set him apart from composers of the contemporary nationalist movement embodied by the Russian composers of "The Mighty Five" with whom his professional relationship was mixed.
► Tchaikovsky was a prolific composer and wrote many famous works, including the ballets "Swan Lake," "The Nutcracker," and "Sleeping Beauty." "The Sleeping Beauty" is one of the most performed ballets in the world, a classic fairy tale story, with a great score. He also composed the 1812 Overture, which is frequently heard at patriotic gatherings.
► Tchaikovsky was not initially fond of the idea of writing a ballet, but was convinced to write "Swan Lake" by his friend, the director of the Imperial Theatres, Ivan Vsevolozhsky. It was premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, in 1877, and it was a failure. However, after his death, a revised version premiered again in 1895, in St. Petersburg, and it was a huge success.
► "The Nutcracker" was premiered in 1892 and again, it was not well received by the critics or the public. However, today it is one of the most popular ballets in the world and is performed annually during the holiday season.
► Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture is one of his most famous works and is often performed at patriotic events, particularly in Russia. It was composed in 1880 to commemorate Russia's defence against Napoleon's invasion in 1812.
► Tchaikovsky struggled with his sexuality throughout his life and had several same-sex relationships. Despite this, he felt compelled to marry a woman in 1877 to avoid scandal, but the marriage was unhappy and short-lived. Despite societal pressure, Tchaikovsky's sexuality did not impact the beauty and popularity of his works.
► Tchaikovsky's music was used extensively in the ballet "The Red Shoes," a 1948 British film, which was one of the first movies to use classical music in its score.
► Tchaikovsky's music was banned in Soviet Russia for a period of time known as the "cultural revolution". His music, with its emphasis on emotional expression and virtuosity, was seen as a product of the capitalist, imperialistic past and did not align with the new aesthetic of "proletarian" culture. The ban was lifted after Stalin's death in 1953 and Tchaikovsky's music became popular again in the Soviet Union.
► Tchaikovsky conducted Carnegie Hall’s inaugural concert in New York. On May 5, 1891, Carnegie Hall, opened its doors for performances to the public. Due to his notoriety and talent, Tchaikovsky was selected as the best choice for conducting its first-ever concert. He received celebrity treatment upon his arrival, in which he noted: "America knows me better than Europe!"
► Tchaikovsky was a heavy smoker and suffered from various health problems throughout his life including many neuroses like depression, irrational stage fright etc. He died in 1893, at the age of 53, from cholera. There have been some speculations that he killed himself, either with poison or by contracting cholera intentionally. His death was widely mourned in Russia, and he was buried at the Tikhvin Cemetery in St. Petersburg.

Seeing him smile was good. Makes me think it was the first time he really smiled.
Bravo! I've always loved Tchaikovsky's music and ballets. You made him come to life! But there was such a sadness about him.
Thank you!...
What a handsome man! Brilliant mind. I love all his works, especially The Nutcracker.
Why are the most amazing artists have a troubled life. Beautiful video, thank you
I'll tell you, Barbara. A great many of them are distracted by their gifts, and never stop to acknowledge the Giver of the gifts. Therefore they have a God-shaped vacuum inside them that is painfully uncomfortable. I am a classical musician and composer, and have invited Jesus to be the King of all the kingdoms of my heart. Barbara, that made all the difference.
@astrand4740 Very good comment!
Those artists whose hearts and minds are turned away from their Creator and Redeemer are troubled and miserable. I have been on both sides of that, and may I say now that I have now found sublime peace in the midst of life's storms.
Music from Heaven A stunning talented musician and left a wonderful legacy.
Tchaikovsky has always been my personal favorite. Thanks for the added history and awesome look back Mystery Scoop. ✨

His music is heavenly! Thank you for the beautiful video!
Yes, it is. His genius is divine inspiration indeed.
He looked like a very lovely personality. The person to have a nice conversation.
Awesome... he was a very handsome man.
Looking at his face only one would've never guessed he was short and stalky. I am a fan of his music. While I was pregnant I listened to his music from morning till dusk because I was told my child would be highly intelligent which she is but I'm not sure it was because of this lol.
He created excellent music that still lives on. And what a handsome chap
Very well done.
You really brought him to life, this handsome kind man and musical genius.
Classical music, a highlight of human culture.
And it is so wonderful, that every country/region has its own flavour... Germany/Austria, Italy and of course Russia.
Thanks for the beautiful video.
Thank you very much... it means a lot!...
Well said, Elisabeth! It seems to me that Tchaikovsky's musical style tends much more toward European than Russian in most cases.
@@notmyworld44
Thanks, Wayne!
I am no musician, just judge from my emotions which tell me, there is something Russian in his work, but of course an artist like him was also in touch with Mid-Europe and therefore certainly influenced by his colleagues from there. Anyway... wonderful music composed by an outstanding artist.
Greetings from Germany
@@notmyworld44 Seems!? What does it mean!? Are you a music critic ? Justify it please!?
@@elisabethlinz4256 Gott segne dich, Elisabeth!

Thank you for this video! I loved his music. Sleeping Beauty. is one of my favorites...
❤All these video"s but this one is my favorite ❣💜💚💛❣
I don't' want to be nitpicking here, but one fact needs to be corrected: Tikhvin, the place where Tchaikovsky is berried, is very close to Saint-Petersburg yet is not part of it. It is a part of another Russia's constituent entity, which is called Leningrad Oblast.
A sad life a productive life a muse which is one of the best in the world and the best short waltzes.
“Now let’s bring him to life.” So worth it even if only for a few minutes.
Well done as usual 👌
*God* rest his soul 🙏
Nice work !! I just came from the nutcracker show with Washington ballet 😊
Fabuloso trabajo!!!
Love his work
C'est drôle comment on dit Casse-Noisette en anglais ! 😉
Também parece engraçado em francês….coisa mais linda é a linguagem entre os povos…
I don't know what I love so much about your videos cause I get scared and creeped out when you guys work your magic, and make them move.....ok I can handle color....but when you did the video about H.H Holmes, I was absolutely terrified but couldn't stop watching
This won’t make sense but anyway…I don’t like classical music but really like Tchaikovsky. Strange!
Por favor, faz um vídeo de Bach. Excelente trabalho! Ficou super real. Parabéns 👏👏👏👏👏
Pyotr Tchaikovsky hated his sexuality. It tormented him all his life. His mother rejected him at an early age, sending him to an all-boys academy. Boys will do whatever they must do to get relief when there are no available female companions. He didn't choose his way, and he's to be pitied. I hope he made peace with his Lord and Savior while he lay dying of cholera. God is boundlessly merciful. Tchaikovsky's music is among the world's most sublime treasures.
Amen.
Viva Tchaïkovsky ❤
Love from Sweden🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
About him being sad. There was a lot to be sad about in a Russia back then, and even to this day.
❤❤❤❤❤
❤❤❤❤❤
он был гений...
its always only until someone's dead they get the recognition they deserved. how awful that is.
Didn't know he was Homosexual ..very interesting video ...Thankyou !
These pictures are the first ones of the late Adrian Tchaikovsky/ young Peter I.Assange! 😄😉
A musical Genius
Problems???
All of us have many problems …..
So sad! That a person’s sexuality could impose so badly on his self-awareness. Homosexuality is normal for some of us. Get over it! He should have had a happy life with a same-sex partner. I love his music especially Symphony 6, his departure work.
His sexuality did not impact the BEAUTY and popularity of his work....STUPID COMMENT! open your eyes to see how many great artists are actually gay!
Things were much different for gay community just few decades back… I think you missing the point! You judging things by today’s standards!
@@MysteryScoop Yes. He's TOTALLY missing the point. I think he's justifying it. Today's standards are horrible!
@@notmyworld44 Your conmen is horrible!!!
The 🌎 is gay as you are too.
@@olgayarovaya3920 Life is horrible.
I think I admired his works of music as well so bravo 👍🏻
