  • www.learnreaso... In this video tutorial I show you how to Gain Stage to get your levels right and help your mix have a great beginning. Gain Staging is the first thing you do when you start to mix before any effects and it's rather easy but there are tons of people that for some reason make it difficult....In Reason I show you how easy it is to get a static mix via Gain Staging.
    See Gain Staging used in a real world full mix of a song in my free Learn How To Mix series.

    Brilliant video! Finally someone teaching OLD school mixing tricks in a new school environment. If we were actually sitting at an SSL console we would do a lot of things differently then we do when we sit at a computer screen. This is REAL gain staging you are teaching and the fact that the GAIN knob is at the top of the mix channel is a sign that we should start there. But since we sit at a computer screen and we see the faders first at the bottom, we tend to start there instead. Thank you so much for this.

    Thanks Matt. Definitely will help my mixes sound even better. I knew about the DB's levels in terms of where I should be but I never knew that the 'input gains' were the key to keeping things as loud as possible w/out moving the faders. I guess when you think about the word 'fader' and not 'gain or volume' makes perfect sense. Switching the routing from master control to control room is definitely I haven't seen before but is now in my mixing routine. I am or should I say was one of those people whose always hitting the reset button on the master fader until I get it right. Big time saver with that as well. Keep the tutorials coming.

    I wish I had watched this video earlier 😭 All videos about gain staging tell that you have to set the input level to -18 dBFS because they are in the digital domain - and I didn’t think of the SSL as a virtual analog mixer, so it’s not dBFS but dBVU 🤦🏻 That explains how the compressors behave... 🤦🏻 and please don’t tell me that I can clearly see it on the channel meters, please... don’t. I‘m having a good laugh here. Thanks, Matt - you‘re an eye opener 👌😂

    Thanks so much, clear explanation. I am new to mixing. I am what you described as the one who keeps moving faders to find volume. 😉
    I haven’t seen this video before, but somewhat it confirmed what I noticed when I did a live mixing of 4 piece band instruments plus 3 singers (1 lead, 2 backup). I gain staged properly, watching the LED meter, despite the noisy environment I don’t hear them clearly but I kept an eye on peak meter. After I finished gain staging, I’m surprised that there was almost no need to touch the faders because they sound okay already.. or course not a perfect live mix but I know what I’m hearing was within the ballpark of balance. First, I felt insecure I thought something’s wrong because my faders are all in zero but how come they sounded balance already 😆

    Obviously you dont have to rewire to control room out if your hardware has level controls. Just turn up or down as you go. Not sure about the rest. I will try it but cutting on eq is always best for volume of end mix for me.

    • @LearnReason
      @LearnReason  Před 10 lety +1

      This is true Micky but there are many that maybe do not have hardware that can to that. I have hardware that can but still use the Control Room out and of course switch it back when exporting. We are taking about Setting and Maintaining Gain Stage, EQ should always came after you set your static mix so yes EQ are great in he mix.
