My sponsor used to tell me: make sure your bird is IN LOVE WITH THE LURE. I recovered birds many times thanks to that advice!!! I even introduce the lure to Harris hawks and other birds that may falconers don't bother.

I've flown so many kestrel's.. Car hawking on starlings was my favorite... I actually had a coopers hawk fly down one and kill her.. Just like my buddy had a golden eagle kill his redtail...

I have heard similar stories but I'm sure it is a pretty intense situation to experience! Thanks for sharing!

yeah, that must really suck. To put months or years of time and effort and money into training a bird for falconry, and then while you're out hunting with your bird, before you even realize it, your bird goes from predator to prey to dies before you can do anything to save it. Falconry birds are not pets, but I can only imagine most falconers care a great deal for their birds and love them almost as pets just from the time spent with them.

Proper weight control is critical to controlling your bird. Falconry 101

I would never release until the bird has been “hacked back.” In other words made wild again. That way she does not seek humans for food…

So when you say you've released 2 kestrels already, does that mean they just flew away on their first hunt like this one 🤣 if my birds tail looked like yours and I lost him my sponsor would drop me and not allow me to get my general license. Great content. Way to promote the sport...

    No telemetry?

    • @chadillaq

Not on this bird. Funds played a role in that.

    • @t2tarantula552

@@chadillaq you should not have trained a bird bud until you could afford telemetry .

I’m the falconer who trained this bird. For starters, I respect your telemetry opinion. We do have telemetry. But you do not use telemetry for training. And you don’t use telemetry on kestrels THOUGH you can. Kestrels are micros and you shouldn’t allow that bird to fly more than 20 ft from you. That’s how they hunt best. Now If this was an imprinted bird or any other bigger wild bird, it would definitely have telemetry anklets on.
Even if I had telemetry on this bird, I would’ve lost it because of the point in time we were at with our training. So that would’ve been an expensive loss anyways and this bird is wild. And it’s out there successfully back.

Falconry has been around for thousands of years and I can assure you they did fine without telemetry. Crazy, I know. Those folks should totally have waited to train birds. Unbelievable! ....
Honestly, I can't comprehend how anyone would post such a thing other than having heard some term thrown around then banging it out in some comments wanting to sound knowledgeable.
