    I have amassed a collection of different packs over the years, thus I have relegated them to the tasks that they excel in. I have packs for climbing, caving, rafting/kayaking, the beach, day hikes, rockhounding, birding, nature watching and collecting, overnight hikes, backpacking, car camping and snorkeling/diving. (not including emergency packs in cars and house) This way I can just grab and go. The part that was most costly was making sure all the packs had the ten essentials so I did not have to barrow/share gear between packs. It is a real relief to always be ready for any activity I want to do. When I was young I kept all my gear together and would pack for what ever I wanted to do as needed. As I got older I got lazier, all I do now is pack food - water and clothing that suits the weather... I am out the door in a flash now, more relaxed. It is true we go to nature to enjoy it not to rough it. Find what ever works for you. I for one am grateful to Blackie for all his wisdom that helped me focus on what was important about packs and not pack what I don't need, while always being ready for the unexpected.

    I appreciate you addressing the issues that us bigger guys face. At 6'5" and 240, I've even gone so far as to buying clothing as big as i can find, taking apart a smaller size, then combining them to make one piece that fits.
    Thanks for the video...

    Get some dark brown Ritz dye, a 5 gallon bucket and hot water. This will help break up and dull the ACU digital pattern. Ends up a woodland green with a little tan.

    Surplus military gear and clothing, modern fishing and hiking clothing, camping, hunting and fishing equipment are all expensive here in Australia. I used to have a heavy set of US woodland pattern pants that were great in winter. I’m a 191cm size 2xl/3xl man (6’3” 202lbs) and I have difficulty finding any clothing that fits. These days I’ve turned to the fishing shirt because there is no surplus stores in my area (within 100 miles). Keep up the good work Blackie.

    I served in the Marine Corps during the switch from ALICE to MOLLE. I will always take ALICE over the other every time. For those that want to give MOLLE a try, it's easy to over pack and end up with a heavy load out.

    for clothing I just buy pants and shirts in earth tones, browns greens ect. for my haversack i use an Isreal map satchel I impregnated with parafin wax to keep most the water out. I also carry a small canvas tarp and a russian plash platka with my stakes and rope rolled inside. I wear the whole thing confederate style. its light enough even my MS riddled, arthritic self can carry it.

    I’ve still got a lot of my 1980s surplus woodland camo. I destroyed my field coat ages ago at work but recently a neighbor who was in during the late 90s handed me a brand new one still in the plastic. As far as sizes, I’ve been seeing the new boot camp standards from all branches and it seems with the “new” wave of recruits you will be able to find plenty of big sizes😂

    The best thing as far as fielding survival gear was getting my dad’s boxes of old milsurp when he passed. Boxes full of gold as far as I’m concerned looking at current prices. Vietnam gear is the staple of my builds, mixed with some foreign equipment. Always enjoy your ideas and always has me coming back to the box to see what I’ve got and overlooked.

    @timpearce4255 Před měsícem +2

    1st... Thanks Blackie for introducing the more modern gear as a topic for review and discussion!
    2nd...Molle II assault bag is more of a day pack. Medium Molle II pack is a good substitute for a Medium Molle II pack. ACU pattern camo is becoming more expensive. OCP camo is becoming greater than $100 on ebay. Assault bags are being parted out so the foam/plastic inserts are now $25 + and the ACU assault bags are $40-$50...Just like what happened to the USMC ILBE bags make sure you are buying a complete bag with all the parts. OCP pattern assault bags double that price. The desirable OCP pattern medium Molle II bags are now in the $150 with straps and belt. The replacement shoulder straps are mostly blown out stitching and $80 and up.
    After market reproduction bags are usually of lesser quality material and stitching. Run from any bag that is single stitched with cotton thread like the present Rothco canvas mini Alice pack that is really a child's book bag and not made to fit adult males. Ask me how I know.

    I knew a couple of guys who had authorization to cut their sleeves to see the end of the cuff to their upper sleeves in order to simulate rolled sleeves in hot weather. If they actually rolled their sleeves, their arms couldn't fit in.
    The big guys are the ones who can carry the heavy loads. If the conditioning is equal, carrying capacity is based on percentage of body weight. We had a battalion CSM who weighed 125 and could max his PT test and liked to call the big guys weak because they didn't do the pushups as easily or run as quick as the skinny guys. OTOH, the big guys easily carried loads that weighed more than he could.

    Helpful hint. The ACU Camouflage Pattern gear is cheap compared to its replacement, OCP, the current pattern. So you can have two identical Rucksacks in terms of Functionality and Layout, but the ACU gear is MUCH cheaper. Plus there’s a lot of Videos on how to Re-Dye them. So if you want to save Money, go with the ACU.

Tip, if you don't like the floppy brim on them, I took a piece of 14 ga wire, pushed and worked it around the edge till all the way around. It bends easy like you want, it can be taken back out easy

Probably not, but theyre half of the price. And apparently meal team6 is the only unit buying civilian and aftermarket tactical pants. Companies like 511 and truspec. Oh, this is what I am looking for. best military surplus or something equivalent. What is the M65 field jacket equivalent? When I look for one, they want almost as much as a new one. The new one is not made of the same material, and I am afraid it will fall apart/be garbage. Also need to get a pack. I was told to get an Alice pack but when I look for them all I see are ones that don't come with straps or waist belt. Also, I have no idea, do I want one with or without a frame? Large or medium? Worst of all there are no surplus stores near me anymore. I hate buying something without seeing it for new items. Shopping surplus, that is worse. You don't know what you are getting unless you go see it and put your hands on it.
    Because I was never in the military and my dad would never talk about his time in the marines, I have no idea. I know nothing. I am here to watch all Blackie Thomas videos, because I love the info I can get, and I hope to get the questions I have answered.
