- Learn the Ted Nugent Stranglehold Guitar Riff from the ByrdmanSteve!
Once again, I, The Byrdman Steve, am using my 1968 Gibson Byrdland guitar. This Byrdland was not one of Ted Nugent's but it was set up by Ted Nugent's guitar man at Elderly Instruments for me. I asked him to set it up for Ted Nugent and send it to me.
I say learn at your own risk. Riffs are documented to be correct 97.5% of the time, to use some Rush Limbaugh promotional analogies.
The Stranglehold Riff may be one of God's greatest gifts to Ted Nugent, hence the world, but then again, I may be a little biased.
Stranglehold is a legendary rock-n-roll guitar riff. While it is one of the easier riffs to play, it's a riff that is nearly impossible to perfect!
I want to thank all of you for your encouragement and requests to make more videos. I would love to quit my day job and oblige, but for now I'll say pretend you're just waiting for the new Boston album to come out:)
Byrdman Steve - Hudba
You nailed his tone perfectly using nearly identical equipment, tuning and settings. Sounds great and is a awesome classic Kalamazoo Michigan Gibson as well. Any Gibson USA made prior to 1985 has the special sauce.
Thank you, much appreciated but I think I was playing through a Crate lol...
Superb demo. Love Ted, love his music, love his carefree attitude, love his very open and gracious posture toward fans. Hate his politics, but I never let that get in the way of great art.
I like the riff towards the end more. It’s amazing
That Byrdland is badass beyond words!
love the lessons man keep em coming
Those guitars are very precise and rare, most would have encased somewhere it cool that you actually use it.
Love that Birdland, you've got Uncle Ted's tone just right. I love the Nuge's attitude and aggressiveness when he's playing. Even though Nugent's music is technically on the simple side compared to other guitaraddicts, few, if ever, seem to invoke his vibe.
Really appreciated your lesson and the right hand only to get the drive going. Keith Richards once said that guitar playing is in the right hand, Uncle Ted's music is proof of that. Thanks!
Very insightful of you... I agree... the missing ingredient usually is the right hand... Not so sure I've got much of his tones.. I really don't shoot for that cuz I think tone is the least of sounding like Ted. You could put Ted on a ukulele and I believe you'll get the vibe-:)
George is great too. I have a friend that knows him, don't think he stays in touch but he used to own a big club in Boston and got to know George really well. There are so many underrated guitar players. Derek St. Homes being one.. believe it or not that's Derek on the 1st half of the Wang Dang solo on Double Live Gonzo
Dude, that was great I managed to figure it out relatively quickly when you b rt oke it down easily. Palm muting and getting the pattern were key of lessons. Thanks, I love this song!!!
Thanks for that:) This is an old vid, there are some nuances that should be added to the riff. Never seems to sound exactly like it does when Ted plays it.
Noice! Needed to see something like that. Much appreciated!
that is a good approach to teaching the lick, building it from the basic rhythm up. Nice job.
Another Uncle Teddy fanatic found. Nice job on the subtleties of the opening lick. It really sets the song up.
Great Ted tone and playing!
+tlaxa Many thanks.. I still say it's attitude over tone:)
Thanks a lot. I absolutely love stranglehold
I got so hyped watching this
Nicely done sir!
thank you steve for teaching me this great song. by the way what amp are you using? any pedal?
Glad you found it, I was counting on ya!! How you been? I just watched the vid you dedicated to me last night, it was a delight! I still need to figure out how you get the backgrounds,,, I teach you Ted, you teach me that!
TTY
Steve
Wow. Fantastic.
Thanks for the time Steve. I appreciate the replys. I love to chat rock n roll. I live for it. I did NOT know that was Derek on Wango Tango. I love that song. I seen the Wango Tango Concert in The Seattle Center Coliseum in 1980. But it was the opening act the BLEW me away. It was the Scorpions doing Animal Magnatism. It was just a killer concert. The boys from Germany I hate to say this stole the show. Ted came flying in off 30'-40' speakers on a rope with nothing on but his loin cloth. So good
Nicely done man. 💯👍
Many thanks!
Nicely done. TY sir.
Thank you for that! n YW sir-:)
WoW - that guitar has a really nice unique tone to it. pretty cool
Thank you much for the positive feedback. Keeps me goin'
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Love it Steve
Even better Steve. WANG DANG is my favorite Nug song. Well maybe after Stranglehold then Wang Dang. Hell that whole Cat Scratch album is awesome. Homebound is one of the best instrumentals out there. Live it up is killer. Death by Misadventure has a killer lick. Thanks again Steve for your time it is much appreciated.
Hey Byrdman, can you explain how you did that Nugent style sustain in the beginning of this video? Pedals?, Amp setting?, Etc?.
I think you sounded great! My first taste of R&R was the cat scratch fever album when I was a kid....( late 70's) Been a huge fan ever since.
Thanks!!
PS...I read an interview that Ted didn't have much control over what went on DLGonzo...and he really disliked the great white Buffalo recording....he thought it was too twangy... Lol
That sustain is all feedback. Just let it happen Haha. That's why hollowbodies are the best rock and roll machines
@@troysorensen1089 yeah, my first guitar was a 1960s ES 330 with P90s. Glorious Ted style feedback when I was a kid back in 1977 or so. I foolishly traded it for some pa equipment.
Great, just GREAT!!, And a most excellent Byrdland that you've got there.
Super cool man
thank you brother .....love the tone of guitars with trapeze tail pieces ....peace
There's nothin' else like a howling jazz guitar!
@harryw3211 Thanks for the confidence:) You got it, attitude all the way:) I wouldn't guess from your description it would effect the coils. They are likely under a pickup cover. Green snot is usually cleanable in my experience. Don' know what kind of finish you'd be left with. Mine is a 68 too. Are you looking at Florentine Cutaway model?
That is so cool!! Thanks for the reply. You so lucky to be able to see this man. He is one of the few rockers I would love to meet. Along with one of my favorites George Thorogood. I did meet him once back stage. He is such an underrated guitar player. He plays a mean slide. He is the one that turned me onto the great blues players. Another would be Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick. Have seen them 8 times. Going to see them again on 9/11. Playing the St. Peppers, & Live Budikhan albums w/orchestra.
I don't even own a guitar but I love that riff whenever I hear it.
There's nothing else quite like it!
Sweet…nicely done.
Many Thanks.. Still perfecting this riff myself..
How can it not be:) Planning on going to one of the FL shows. Thanks for sharing!
I like the idea that you used --Tried -- to used the same stuff Ted did..Equip. the Byrdland is awesome..i have never played one in my life..I was wondering I really didi play this wrong /differ/ for years..glad only my friends heard me LOL thanks..
Seen Uncle Ted twice. Once at Ft. Hood TX and latet in Raleigh NC
Loved it thank you but....you don't have seemed to have done a copy of Smokescreen which is one of Ted's best. Would appreciate it greatly if you could do one. I am trying to play it by ear.
Cheers
Thanks for the kind words. Ted is an awesome host! His handlers however have to keep him on schedule cuz Ted loves to be with the people and do what he does:)
@paguaplayer Thanks! Not sure if I can help much in verbiage, I can put a breakdown vid on my list but I will say, the part you are talking about (the flutter) has less going on than your ears and eyes are taking in.
Your pointer finger can stay barred on he D string down (5th fret) and your ring finger only rises when alternating with what you are barring. The key to it sounding right may have more to do with your right hand and muting with your palm while chomping A. Let me know how it goes!
you are a worthy fan!
Damn Steve i would give anything to be able to play like that. I have always wanted to play like ted or Angus, Eddie, ect. So lucky to be born with the talent for music
I'd like to say yes but actually it's just an old Westone with an upsidedown headstock. Plays great. A friend painted the tiger pattern on it many years ago. The finish work is awesome.
love that guitar. And the riff. Strangle hold indeed one of gods gifts to humanity
Great lesson to a great song! Nice guitar too!!
Definitely helped me , thanks man . Hail uncle Ted 🏴🤘
Great video!
great video, bravo!
Do you have a zebra Bronco? I love the Byrdland's, I gotta find one of them! Enjoyed the lesson! THX!
Yes I do... It sits on my desk though-:) n Thanks!
Excellent lesson, especially with the "one hand only" method to learn this kick-ass classic. I've seen Ted fret it in different positions. I credit Ted for teaching me to "throttle with the right hand and steer with the left".
I like it!
If you are referring to the very, very end, I/he I believe does somewhat of an improvise using a basic A pentatonic scale starting with a bend on the B string 8th Fret. Hope that helps:)
This almost slipped by me!! LOL!! Now maybe I can someday play like Ted!! Thanks Steve!!
@fulbluntalernstmeyer I thought I might get some coments on that guitar when I noticed it in the background:) It is only a Westone with a backwards headstock. It plays great. It is actually tiger striped. A very talented friend of mine custom painted it for me years ago when I was playing on stage. I'l try to make it visible in next vid. talk Talk to you soon,,
Steve
Thanks Steve!!🙂
Thanks Arthur! That's an old video, still trying to perfect it myself:)
Byrdman Steve....
Stellar tutorial.........
Great lesson. From the videos and seeing Ted live, I'm pretty sure he uses the barred G>A after the hammer-on riff and not the open position chords.
You are correct, I started barring it sometime after that.. Thanks for the observation!
I didnt think anyone loved teds music as much as ted does then i saw your videos. Ha 🤘👍🎸
Lol:)
@SotR59 Thanks for the positive feedback. I only have unconventional methods to show:) Cool upright you got there!
Would love to.. so many things I want to do, just haven't had a lot of time for the videos. I will try to include that somehow in one of the next vids. It's really just a Tedly jam thing in pentatonic patterns:-)
some great authentic tone; amazing guitar as well
Thanks much!
Would love to see some more of this song.. you got the sound down great..
Thanks much! I have a few other vids on Stranglehold, not sure if you saw 'em Ted Nugent Stranglehold Guitar Solo Cover and
How To Play Ted Nugent Stranglehold Solo On Guitar Would love to do some more.. no time lately:)
How did you make the little squeal at exactly 4:36? Great tone...many thanks for posting!
That was just a hint of what I think is called an overtone. Ted does them all the time. I think there are better examples of it in some of my other videos. Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top is also known for them. It's a technique of picking and touching the string with your finger at the same time. If you are a beginner, you will ultimately stumble on them by accident. At least that how it was for me until I figured it out.
Pinch Harmonics maybe?
@harryw3211 I figured Corrosion is what you meant. I traded Ted's Byrd number 6 that I obtained nearly 20 years ago for the HR Fusion with Ted. I do not currently own a Byrdland of Ted's. The HR came from Ted to me. He got the better of the deal in terms of guitar but I would have never forgiven myself if I didn't make the deal with Ted. I bought a 68 Byrd a few years ago. It's the one with Ted's sig. on it in many of my videos. Ted checked it over when he signed it and gave it full approval!
I live in Indiana , I run my own company , I did some work for a Nugent in Martinsville , in. , he's related to Ted , I have my own studio , ( doctorshock studios ) analogue or digital , I play guitar , bass , keys , vocals , and have fallowed Ted some what for years , great story , great site ,THANKS
Thanks for the Reply Steve. I did check out your video of Stormtroopin'. Great great job! I also believe it is the best guitar solo of all time. It just blows the doors off. I noticed a Ted pinball machine in the back ground. I snoozed a yr or so ago. I was looking for a pinball machine for my man room & found one exactly like that one. It had six pieces (flippers ect) autographed by ted with photos of him signing it. My wife said no I was so pissed It was on Ebay & the guy lived 15 miles away.
any chance you could teach us one of your end solos?
Yup! I thought the same. Just never occurred to me it could be Derek and or that Ted would have let him:)
Excellent video! After watching this I spent a good hour with my hollow body working out the kinks
So glad it's helpful! Thanks for sayin' so:)
Too cool! ROCK ON!
Awesome
@SqueekyDc Thanks for the encouragement! I will take all I can get:) Just need more time!
I learned the history of the Brydland guitar and it is so sad how Hank Garlands life turned out. BTW thanks for covering Nugent I’ve been looking for tutorials from someone who knows the nuances.
No such thing as a bad Ted concert! Funny there was a time you wouldn't have seen Ted Nugent with a line up like Styx n REO:) Thanks for sharing!
Hey Steve--Awesome channel! Could you do a video just on the solo parts ---or maybe a lesson on how to play the motor city madhouse riff? Thanks--rock on man!
Thanks so much!!! I do have one up there for the solo called How To Play Ted Nugent Stranglehold Solo On Guitar, I'll have to put Motorcity Madhouse on the list... Try this link How To Play Ted Nugent Stranglehold Solo On Guitar
just saw Ted at red rocks on may 8, awesome!
Thanks for your reply Steve. I am 52 and i cut my rock and roll teeth on Ted Nugent, Ted Nugent, Free For All, Cat Scratch Fever & Double Live Gonzo albums back in the late 70's. One song that i would love seen played is Ted's live version of Stormtroopin off double live gonzo. It was record in Seattle Center Coliseum in '77. That has the best solo of all of rock & roll. I wish i could see how he makes all that feedback sound from that guitar. Can you play that solo and make it cry like he does?
Those were the days.. Thanks too. BTW.. I may have said it wrong but it's Wang Dang Sweet Poontang on Double Live Gonzo that Derek plays lead on.. -:)
Great memories Ted. Des Moines Ia
I turned this up loud at work today.
nice!
🤤🤤🤤 F Yeah!! Sounds so good man! You make it look so easy! Tone is rediculous
You are very kind TY.. The more years and time spent with the man himself, the more I realize I'm still and will always be learning too.
My god! That is a wonderful guitar!
@paguaplayer No problem. Thanks for the explanation.. Take care
nice lesson ..Steve : )
Such a fun song to play. Nice an easy, no real thinking involved.
Then why would you click on a video titled "How to play the Ted Nugent Stranglehold Riff" ?
What kinda amp you using??? Sounds great
Believe it or not I think that was a Crate head with a 4x12 Cabinet.
@meekinator03 Thanks for the encouragement! Will do my best:)
Eye can live with that! Lol. 🦆🍊🍅 Very Cool 🍊🦆🦆🦆🦆🍅🍄🍀🎥
Thank you such Brother
@AwesomeBeatles Thanks for noticing:)
No Fenders but I'll take that as a compliment since the Nuge used Fenders back in the day:) My vids have used a number of set ups. A Crate GT1200H half stack, Line 6 double 12, and most recently a Marshall JCM2000 TSL. You have to be comfy w/your amp but I am putting a tad less. This vid I think used the Line6 but not sure.. Thanks for checking in:)
nice man!!!!
Great job and the sound was pretty close to uncle Ted's. When you spoke to him I hope he was a nice guy. He seems to be cool.
@sincitycycler Think I was plugged into a line 6 on that one. If not, it was a Crate half stack. My newest vid is a TSL 100 Superlead Marshall. Guess I'm still searching:)
Thank you too!
OH YEAH! I used to think that Ted played the first half a little softer and then hit a pedal or something. You can hear the change, and every time it stands my hair up. Those two complimented each other really well. Kinda like Randy Jo Hobbs and Johnny Winter....
Thank you!
Man, I remember practicing this lick when I was a kid until I fell asleep. I have it now, but it never sounds good unless I'm using a semi hollow or hollow body guitar. I don't have a Birdy, although I've had others in similar construction.
It's funny, I've seen so many people try that lick and just can't get it. You have to have the rythem thing going on for sure. Great bluesy song. The best solo ever written. Love it. Hey Baby is the best boogie woogie ever written in my opinion.
Thanks man. We play it alike.
Tim
+Tim Smallwood Sounds like we'd get along just fine!!! I'm with ya all the way on Stranglehold:) Thanks for watching it and checking in!
sounds bout right the only thing that sounded flat to me is the "d" until you rly started playing it thru thnx a load man even tho i didnt need it i just wanted to listen to u play
Yea nice tone for sure!
