World's First Minivan - The Stout Scarab

  • In this episode of My Classic Car, we'll travel to Franklin, Wisconsin to visit with Ron Schneider and take a look at some of the outstanding cars in his collection. In particular, he has a 1936 Stout Scarab.

    It's commendable that Ron and other car collectors take the time to share their cars with the general public. I had never heard about a Stout Scarab, fun and strange little car.

    My wife's grandfather had Lincoln Zephyr in the 60's era, and he used for taxi cab in Sao Paulo Brazil. Until the day he pass away he talked about his Lincoln. Cheers to you all!

    That Scarab is the epitome of Art Deco automotive design. LOVE IT!

      It's basically an airplane that died and was reincarnated as a car. You can see it in the ribbed split window, the long body, the way the doors work, the tubular frame steel frame with the panels wrapped around it, and the airtight sealing. Did I mention that the aerodynamic styling is also a dead giveaway?

    $5,000.00 in 1936 is the equivalent of $89,300.00 in 2018. No wonder not many of
    these Depression era cars sold.

    WOW! I bet you really turn some heads driving through town in that 1936 Stout Scarab. What a collector's item, a rare gem. Ron has many beautiful gems there in his garage. Thank you both for sharing.

    Stunning art deco vehicle...love the table and rear seats, a real gentleman's retreat. I'd love to write a book in there while drinking whiskey. Absolutely the most wonderful machine on earth. Cheerio!

    Wow I'm not really a car guy but these are all beautiful, beautiful vehicles. I'm gushing over these vehicles here. Ron has incredible taste. The artistry and attention to detail of these old vehicles is very impressive, and gives me a new appreciation for the spirit of those times

    I saw a Scarab at the Frist Museum in Nashville, Tn. a few years ago. I was so enamored I saw it on four occasions
    . It is beautiful.. The doors have mother of pearl buttons. It is the most beautiful and interesting car I have ever seen. It was a silver scarab with crimson interior. Absolutely amazing.

    I've never seen a Torino Squire wagon. Didn't know it existed.
    The man has his own museum. Amazing. Great to see a Scarab on the road moving. It's always a different experience to see them moving. Cool!

      I remember them; nice cars until they started rusting. The hidden headlights were added for 1970, I believe. Those early-1970s Fords always looked as if they fell asleep, even back then. I wonder what kind of reaction a car like that would get on the road today.

      I grew up riding in a Torino Squire Wagon.. they were great cars! We drove from Ohio to Maine once and back, I never got car sick

      In the early '90s I saw a great original Torino Ranchero with the original decal trim on it. This was in the same town I saw a 1956 VW Westphalia Kombi, all original in. I also saw a Citroen 11cv traction avanti. It was full of retired Cold War officers. I even saw a few LHD Datsun Zs.

    I still have the small picture, from one of those automotive day-by-date tear- off calendars, from the mid 90s of a Scarab. It’s literally the most beautiful example of a vehicle from the Art Deco period!

    I saw a Scarab, possibly this one, at an exhibit of futuristic vehicles for their time. Very cool looking vehicle. Nice to see the video after seeing the vehicle in person.

    This car is the most remarkable car I have ever seen! And to see it in action, too! Most such cars would be in a museum, and you would SEE them, but NEVER find out what they are like! And how smooth the engine is! Real quality, including how the passenger door opens from outside, at the touch of a button ! In its day, I would DEFINATELY have bought one!

    Very impressed with Ron's collection.
    Love the Lincoln Zephyr we see.
    The Stout definitely has the internal design aesthetics of a 1930s aircraft.
    After the second world war ended the bean counters at many factories snuffed many concepts that were attained pre war.

    I noticed it has a South Wind gasoline heater hanging under the dash. That thing burned gasoline by tapping into the intake manifold below the carb. It was on or off. 'On' soon made the rubber floor mat get hot and start smoking. Turning it off was the answer! It severely reduced MPG! but was instant on and really poured out the heat which was great in frigid central PA!

      Personally I am perplexed about why this is described as a minivan! Is that how multi-person vehicles are described in America? Volkswagen had their goods VAN, but they described the people carrying versions ad a MiniBUS

    Nice Torino Squire. My parents had one, same color scheme as that one. Light Ivy Yellow was the name of that color. Nice bunch of cars.

      Percy Barbarossa>>. When kits are made the finished product has to pass modern codes to be insurable. This lump o' tin is a widow maker. If you want one for your museum that badly: you'll find one. No one's going to go bankrupt for you whims.!

    I saw a Scarab about 30 or so years ago at a small car museum at Stone Mt., GA, I think. Unrestored, but beautiful....and weird.

      They've got one at the Owls Head Transportation Museum in Owls Head, Maine, or at least they did the last time I was there, a couple years ago. It's a great vintage vehicle museum in a slightly awkward location. :)

    Wow close to 6yr after this video was uploaded and I've never seen this vehicle EVER. Sure is gorgeous compared to the average ugly minivan one sees on the roads. The interior sure is nice and that engine for the size delivers good power and acceleration. Nice find!

    Absolutely awesome. I know some might roll their eyes, but just look at that style. I am a wagon lover, and a guy fond of the 40's and early look (Mcfly anyone?) It's unique, like Gremlin unique. But I certainly adorn that style.
