Ah, Voiello. What would Sorrentino's Vatican do without you? Simply fantastic.
I love this TV series ever since The Young Pope. Just finished watching episode one and can't stop laughing. It's ridiculously humorous in a dark way and diabolically funny.
Silvio Orlando is magnificent here, but Maurizio Lombardi (cardinal Assente) does such marvelous job in this scene! He says nothing (his only two lines are cut in this video), but just watching his reactions is priceless. He is a true barometer of Vatican, so sensitive to subtle changes in mood.

I like to think before departing to heaven PIUS XIII answered three prayers. One is for John Paul III to talk to his parents once more, another is for the people to embrace him, and for Voiello to become the new pope.

Since I've been Catholic my whole life, I can wholeheartedly say that no sane person in the church would want the position of Pope, too much stress, too much extravagance. Majority of Catholics just want simple lives for themselves and their families. Lives of peace.

@@benneden2580 where? I live in the US; I watched the first episode using HBO Now but it tells me episode 02 won't come out until the 27th of this month.
You should see the 2nd ep. The ending credits were the most out of nowhere but leave-a-smile on your face kind of sequence after a really heavy episode.

@Brandon Smith But imagine that a young pope falls into a coma and the Church is without a leader and there are so many serious issues to be solved? Would they wait years for the pope to wake up? I think there is some logic calling another conclave if a pope falls into a coma and is like that for years.
I can suspend my disbelief; this series was just masterfully produced. What I really love about this series is that it is AWARE of the iniquities of the Church that it blasphemes but at the same time it understands what Roman Catholicism is all about that it reveres it. The vagrant story in the end of ep 2 is a perfect example. Powerful.

Interesting. I'm a Catholic too, and I'm not offended one bit. This show is quite perceptive actually, it's refreshing. Like it knows some inside jokes. I don't think actual Roman Catholics would be offended by this, but I know other "Christian" religions would be.
