- The full review of Sonos Ace headphones is here. And it's long. If you don't have time to watch it in full, BUY FIRST, WATCH LATER! You can thank me later.
I tried to keep this video short, but it's already more than half an hour long. I still have a lot to say about the Sonos Ace headphones. I deliver the upfront summary within the first few minutes but if you have time, hear me out for the rest of the video.
If you are considering buying these and do not have half an hour to spare me, just go ahead and buy these first. I am not sponsored by Sonos so the views are personal and mine alone. I can't wait to bring these to work and use them everyday once I can bring them out in public!

Thank you Peter, I was watching your video with my new Sonos Ace unboxed in my lap. Your videos are very informative. Ted
Your insights on sonos are always top notch. Usually I only just like your videos, this video deserves a comment just thanks to the LOTR reference. I have a hobbit sized head myself so I hope the ace works for me.
Glad to hear they are the best ANC out there. Can't wait to try them out. Great review as always Peter.
You have to test it out in the store. It's really good.
That made me order a pair. I was reluctant until I heard that.
@PeterPee - Hey Peter, got my sonos ace headphones today and while pleased with audio swap (my initial reason for purchasing them), what I don't understand, is your saying that the usb-c to usb-c cord was compatible with an iPad. Mine is a 9th generation model which houses a port for its proprietary lightening cord, and the cord included with my Sonos Ace does not fit it. After seeing you demonstrate how that cord connected with your iPhone (my phone is an Android) I was hoping to do the same with my iPad, but alas, could not. And so, my question to you, would be whether you're aware of an alternative to that cord that would effectively allow me to connect my headphones to my iPad. Seeing you do it with your iPhone, I thought, was really cool. Any thoughts? Thanks, Ace 😉
I wish Sonos would implement simultaneous output through the Ace and the Arc. I recently swapped my parent's sound system for an Arc with sub and surrounds, because they just couldn't really manage fiddling with their old Yamaha AVR, it was always in some weird mode that caused tinny sound with some TV content. The Arc solved all that, it just works. My dad has some slight hearing issues, not bad enough to justify hearing aids (and he tried -- they annoy him to no end). He really enjoys the Arc kicked up a notch or two so he can follow dialog. But of course my mom doesn't like that. There are not many good solutions for simultaneous (and synchronous) speaker+headphones playback available. I think Samsung TVs have that feature with any BT headset, but ofc they bought an LG before finding out about that.
I want to use them WITH my hearing aids if possible. No bt aids I’ve had connect properly to a main tv. With one ear so different than the other it really warrants needing aids. And I have issues hearing at the volume level my husband likes. This would be the perfect solution for us.
There are Bluetooth transmitters that can help you with this. Some have splitters that send signal to soundbar and headphones. Avantree or Ugreen might have one.
@@ke5943 We tried several of them, and there are two issues: One is unacceptable delay, as those transmitters are mainly for music. The other is that most TVs and AVRs have no useful audio outputs that won't mute the main speakers.
If the ACE allowed me to use them simultaneously with the ARC then I would buy a pair right now. Otherwise I don't see a great use for them for the asking price. I already have "good enough" ANC headphones.
Great review as usual. Thanx Peter. ❤
Great review Peter 👍
Sound Swap with the Arc I think is a must for me to purchase living in an apartment for those late night viewings!
Great review!
heads up. You cannot pair two sets of the Ace currently. I asked Sonos directly and they said no. I'm hoping they add this to a future update. This is great for couples like myself that want to watch a noisy movie while the kids sleep.
How will you hear if your child needs you?
They better allow 2 pairs to be synced. I have ordered 2 pairs for my wife and I to use for late night viewing. Why did they offer 2 pairs at a slight discount if they weren’t offering paring. Wake up Sonos.
This is a genuinely weird comment. Why would anyone even consider this as a use case?
@@Slippers84forget them kids😂
Hah! I too have wondered about this - last video I asked the same question and the response from the community was that they thought it would be the case because Sonos are offering them for sale as a pair on their website. Seems very disingenuous of Sonos to be doing this if they don't support it from day one - presumably they intend to support it at some stage in the future - but boy, am I fed up with companies trying to get you to pay for stuff that doesn't exist yet! Imagine shelling out a thousand dollars for a 2 of these sold as a set on pre-order, only to find that when they arrive, you can only use 1 at a time with your Arc?
Sonos has really gone down in trustworthiness in my mind in the last month unfortunately.
Great video, very thorough! Quick note, Sennheiser has the usb-c to usb-c audio and charging option with phones and computers.
Thanks Peter! Few questions 1. Is wired listening lossless/atmos on Apple devices? 2. How is transparency mode? 3. What eq settings did you use when testing on iPhone/ipad?
Thanks again for another fantastic video Peter. A question: Does the USB c connection with laptops also connects the mic?
Wondering if I can use them for video calls through USB-c connection!
Yes via usb c cable Windows recognizes microphone and headphone as input/outpit. I tested on Teams. The microphone pickup sounds good though I tested in a quiet setting.
Hey Peter, On the usbc to usbc feature when connected to say a windows laptop, hope you can test and share details of how this device works with respect to say zoom / MS Teams call, call quality, noice cancellation, latency, etc. I don't suppose it has a mic for calls. I am not a sonos user but the noise can and usbc feature may tempt me.
Thanks for the info. about the battery declining faster with sound swap activated, not a deal breaker but good to know 🙂.
The TV Audio Swap feature is pretty underwhelming in that the stream from Arc to Ace is too soft even at full volume (Just received these today). Anything on Bluetooth is loud and clear so it should be a problem with WIFI stream
Good review but you didn’t mention how to setup these headphones. Do you need the updated Sonos app?
Does it have an EQ to customize the sound?
Also if you connect these using usb-c to usb-c cable do you get lossless music?
Peter Pee. What's your take on Roam 2? I thought it was a miss with Move 2 being a good spec bump. Hoping they release something better next year.
Pete great work. My preorder is in. I do have a question. Sub mini and beam combo for a smaller room seems to not have of the bass of my 2 play 5s and sub mini. Any thoughts?
Just an FYI, Focal Bathys has a USB DAC built in so it works similar to the Ace. You can connect a USB C cable and it even decodes high res up to 24 bits 192 kHz. More expensive though. Looking forward to trying on a pair of ACE. I have an ARC soundbar in my bedroom and use bluetooth while my Wife sleeps. Unfortunately I have large-ish ears and don't like when they touch the drivers. Great Vid Peter.🍻
Peter amazing video as usual! Would love more analysis on swapping TV audio from an Arc, you seem like the only person who could really get into this right. Does it support 7.1 Dolby TrueHD? How does it compare to AirPods playing spatial surround from AppleTV? This is the big differentiator of this product and I don’t see any reviews really going into detail about how it works and how it compares to existing “personal surround sound” options, you would be the guy to knock this out of the park too!
And anyone who’s gotten these in and own an Arc, please feel free to chime in here! Is the personal surround experience worth it enough to buy just for that? Or should we wait for Sonos to officially release the “TrueCinema” feature first?
@@DG-2323- It's the reason I ordered them and am wearing right now, watching my TV with the audio swap on. Don't even worry about when true cinema will arrive; they're terrific enough already. What I especially love is not having to sit in the 'sweet' spot with these on. They deliver that sound wherever one is situated. I'm relaxing in a zero gravity recliner to the far right of the aforementioned sweet spot (my TV's on a swivel mount) and with these headphones on, it the sounds the same.
I have ordered it here in Vancouver, Canada. I have the Sonos Arc Soundbar, two Sonos Fives surround speakers and a Sonos Sub. Hoping for the best
Thank you for this video Peter! Can’t wait for the AirPods Max 2 to b released for them to be compared to before deciding which to buy. I use Apple TV 4K for everything so the Apple integration really interests me.
Not sure I wait until new AirPods Max be out and compare against Ace
Apple’s beats headphones have had the usb c audio function before the Sonos Ace, so this is not a unique feature but it is still a new and welcome feature!
You didn’t mention the pass through transparency, that was the feature I loved the most about the APMs (while they lasted lol) it was like having speakers floating around my head while still hearing the world around me, where do these sit in that regard?
Salut merci pour cette excellente vidéo 👌👌👌du ACE
Didn't mention about how well the pass-through/transparency mode sound, something I actually find it quite important.
The verge said its second best just to Apple. They say it’s really good
Thank you for justifying my purchase! Excellent breakdown and review as always. You’re one of the best
Personally I would take his review w a grain of salt. He seems like a sonos fanboy.
Understandable but so am I.
@@hectorperezjr2102That's a nice reply.
Hi Peter, thanks for your honest review, just wonder the difference between Sonos Arc + Sub gen3 + 2 OneSL VS Sonos Ace swap While watching Dolby Atmos Movies.
Sonos Ace claim only connect to Arc.
If we have Sub gen3 and Sonos surround pair with Arc swap to sonos Ace, Is get better Sound Quality & Immersive Sound than if we only have Sonos Arc? Thanks if you can describe or make new video to explain that...
Excellent video, type c audio input is awesome. It appears the iPhone doesnt have "lossless bluetooth" for these so the fact you can use a type c to type c cable is so cool. I like my Sony XM4 over the XM5. I will have to experience the noise canceling myself, along with more intensive songs. Sonys EQ in the app is better than Sonos. (Sony has more bands to adjust and config saves to headphones so you don't need the app after setup.) Sonops Ray support might make this a more tempting offer for apartment living.
I don't understand why they would rush things out when the key feature of the Ace, TrueCinema, and the app are not ready.
Fantastic review as always. I have a few questions please.
1. Do the headphones work just as well with the usb cable if the battery is dead please?
2. Will the batteries be replaceable from Sonos for a fee?
3. How impressive is true cinema at replicating your speaker setup please? This the main reason I will be considering these headphones. I think you said you tried it out in the store?
The headphones will not work without power, they have a DAP (digital audio Processor) which is required to make the headphones sound like they do, which is why the headphones need power, however any device you plug them into with the cable should begin charging them if it is capable of it.
2. He probably doesn’t know this at the current moment, no word has come from Sonos either.
3. No one can answer this as that feature is not currently functional.
@@metalmanexetreme Thanks
Will the bose quiet comfort ultra have more bass compared to the sonos ace?
Im asking because the sonos sub provide top quality bass and hope sonos ace can emulate similar bass
Thanks for the review. I’ve stopped buying Sonos products due to the issues with the updated app. I don’t want to be at the mercy of an app or internal amp or amps in powered speakers. Two things I’ve learned during my musical journey. Rock on!
Just bought them. I’d say I’m super satisfied thus far. Did hate the app update recently obviously. Also have had AirPods Max previously. They’re pretty similar in quality honestly but I prefer these in terms of longer listening comfort.
Do you get lossless or Hi-Res Audio when using the usb-c cable connection?
Thanks for another great review. I preordered them on Saturday. According to Sonos they are shipping tomorrow and I should have them by Wednesday.
Please tell me that 1 1/2 foot usb c cable is not the one included that is tiny. You would hope they would include a 4 - 6 ft cable. How is the spatial audio through the headphones how to does it compare to the airpod max or airpods pro 2?
Peter shows the cable in the video. It,s not the 1,5 feet one. The usbc to usbc is the short one. But the usbc to 3,5mm is longer.
Thanks again for another great video! Just wondering if 2 ace headphones can be connected to 1 arc soundbar? If not do you think that Sonos will add this feature in the future? I really hope they do!
B&W Px7 or Px8 also use the USB-C to USB-C connection for sound, but you can't charge the same time, the Sonos can. Well done Sonos!
How’s the clamping pressure and ear cup size? The 1000xm4 are super clampy and very tight on the ear cup. I’d love someone to measure the inside of the ear cup in actual usable space.
I currently use a pair of AirPod Max for watching TV via Apple TV at night. The one time it’s annoying is if I’m watching a 4K blu ray and I have to pair the AirPods straight to the TV with Bluetooth. Can I assume that if I’m watching a Dolby Atmos Blu-ray and using the Sonos Ace via the Arc that I’m getting Dolby Atmos straight to the headphones?
You assume correctly. That’s the massive differentiator between this and the competition. This is the big feature. Of course, you have to have the Sonos arc. This is why I’m strongly considering the Ace. Would be able to get atmos across ATV, PS5 and my 4K player. This is why I haven’t been able to make the switch to AirPods Max.
@@Darkk_Sagedifferentiator...... my word of the day 👍
So if they dont support Airplay will they still work with Apple? (iPhone/iPad) over BT ? And if the USB cable is attached to iPhone what audio is supported?
My main query revolves around the seamless transition between computer and phone. For instance, if I have them on and receive a phone call, will it automatically switch like AirPods, including AirPods Max? I seek excellent audio quality; the AirPods Max have served me well and deliver exceptional sound for a $500 headset. However, Apple has not released a new product in this category for quite some time. Frankly, the only enhancement needed for the AirPods Max is the option to connect via USB-C instead of Lightning. If the Sonos Ace replicates the computer-to-phone switch feature that Apple offers, it would be a win for me.
Your poll greatly exaggerates the number of people who will purchase the headphones. We viewers of your channel are avid Sonos enthusiasts and are more likely to buy ANY Sonos product. At least we were before the app update.
That app update is so bad that it would stop me buying any more Sonos products for a bit
@@ClarionCaww You're not the only one. I've read a couple of tech articles praising the headphone but cautioning buying because of the app.
Can you get atmos and lossless when listening via iPhone on Bluetooth?
Sadly, mine are behaving as other publications have mentioned: impact sound on the ear cups when walking, hissing on the right earcup when there is silence but transparency turned on and constant brief on/off switching of the ANC with moving the head even the slightest bit. Bummer - not ready for release at all.
How would these work as daily drivers for work & gaming on a PC? I am currently using the Beyerdynamic Amiron Wireless. I am due for an upgrade though and was very interested in the Sonos headphones. Would they work for this? Anyone has any experience?
Thanks for the great detail as always Peter! This is on my wishlist as soon as I can get it past my wife ;)
Are you sure the Arc streams audio to the Ace via WiFi? I can't find any documentation supporting this claim.
Yes.
I suspect the answer is no, but do the Sonos Ace allow Sound Swap with simultaneous connection to a Bluetooth device? I know they can support connection to 2 Bluetooth devices, but haven’t found anything about the sound swap and Bluetooth. Example: Sound swapping while playing a PS5 while connected via Bluetooth to iPad for discord.
Not likely, wifi is already power hungry and they likely didn’t add a chip to navigate both being being active at once due to the power hungry nature of wifi
@@metalmanexetreme I figured that was likely the case.
Emm, the stats is skewed. Those who are not using SONOS, may not necessary be subscribed to the channel. Therefore you have the low response rate.
I’m most concerned about the comment about not doing well handling complex music.
+ANC
-Audio swap with Arc only
Looking for an excuse to get new headphones. Don’t think Ace is giving it to me. Maybe if they’re able to expand functionality with software update?
Peter thanks so much I just love your detailed professional reviews. Could you or somebody else please tell me where I can download that Dolby Atmos Demo you used near the start of the review. My Ace headphones are being delivered tomorrow I pre ordered a month ago and the Atmos demo would be a good test that I can run through my Plex server and Sonos Arc soundbar then switching over to the Ace :)
So if headphones supports wifi why dont they allow content via the App?
I’m Tired of Sonos. Peter I have been watching your videos for several years. You’re the BEST.
Just tired of Sonos
you mentioned it briefly, but I really don't understand the true cinema feature.
my room is probably imperfect as a home cinema. best anc headphones on my ears can simulate a (near) perfect listening experience. so why would I want to downgrade them to my listening room?
Real large speakers move sound through and around you in a more meaningful way than any headphones will. You’ll have improved clarity and range. If you have room and budget for 2 decent speakers and a sub, that will have these beat.
Can you sound swap to multiple units?
I can't test that now as I only have one Arc. And they have not yet rolled out support for the Beams. From the software setup screen, yes you can.
You can only swap from the Arc to one Ace at a time.
Really wanting this feature in the Ace. Right now my wife and I use our AirPod Pro 2s (through Apple TV) to watch movies together after putting the kids to sleep. I know you lose the Spatial Audio once you have 2 devices connected but they still sound good and you can enjoy the experience together. Make it happen Sonos, you’ll get 2 Aces out of us.
Yayy embargo liftt!!
Exactly! I have been waiting to share this!
I like you Peter. Thankyou
In my home in my room yes for this Ace, otherwise I’ll still need apple products due to phone, tablet, com, tv and etc.
Weaker bass compared to competition? That's disappointing. How about after adjusting the EQ?
those who gotten the headset, are you experiencing Buzzing / Static Noise in the right ear?
Any reason why MKBHD didn't give a very glowing review? Was he being too nitpicky?
It’s because it’s not for everyone. Especially at that price point I don’t see the need for it at all.
It’s because it’s missing the key differentiating feature on release and doesn’t sound so good that the price difference makes sense to the average consumer who would be just as content with the XM3-XM5.
@@toyagirl1 I just sold my XM3 two days back, assuming the Sonos Ace would hit it out of the park. Not so sure anymore. I still have my wired Bose QC25, I might hold on to those for the time being. Unless these get discounted.
@@swazzz1 return the ace, don’t pay that price tag unless you’re fully happy with them. The XM4 or XM5 are cheaper and still widely regarded as being decent headphones.
It doesn’t show if it play Dolby TrueHD
hi bro i think you have forgot sennheiser monentum 4 wireless with it 60 hours battery life and you be surprise sound once you hear it..
great. support Beam Gen1 .... but when 😂
Not all have been waiting on the Sonos Ace😂
No chance of us throwing any more money at Sonos since the app became unusable. Thousand of pounds worth of Sonos equipment not fit for purpose in our house now
Uuggghh, I'm not sure I can atay awake. But if cinematic sound isn’t part of the initial release, I'm holding of buying until then.
That is correct. TrueCinema is not there yet.
#fixtheapp
Usbc to usbc connectivity? I have that with Bowers & Wilkins PX7 which is not the newest product. U can hear the difference on Tidal with/out wire. Otherwise with Spotify or AM I did not hear any difference. I would not buy Sonos Ace. There are better options with premium materials. I get it NC is good thing, soubd is good, battery life is good but…. They do not look premium for this price. No reason to swap for me from PX7.
Because of the app, no more of their crap
Sounded quite underwhelming in the store
As a Sonos user for many many years, not interested. Pfff ... I love my Sony though.
hi this sonos ace LEAK OF BASS I USE SENNHISER PXC550 5YRS OLD HAS EVEN BETTER BASS..kind of sad..
500€ is way too much
It blocks out more "white noise" than other headphones so that makes it better with noise cancelling? 😂.
Testing it with white noise only is not a realistic use test. S real life test of outdoors and other household noises like a TV in the background , a washing machine , dishwasher , noises coming from outdoors into the house like petrol lawnmower , people talking , cats , trucks etc is a more real life test instead of blocking white noise.
You clearly have already seen it coming that the “best” ANC claim would be controversial.
If you would really to defend your opinion it would be a good idea test data with real world noise soon. White noise is just the easiest chapter for active noise cancellation.
Understand that as an audiophile, most of your videos and critics are as a user inside a studio, but the audience of Sonos Ace is just markedly different and you have to decide to go for them or continue sitting on the couch.
32 minutes ? really ?
I can buy the Sony XM-4 for more than half the price of the Sonos rubbish....
It’s scary that a single app can turn a 2k system obsolete.
I mean I knew this product was gonna flop. I see it being discontinued in a year or two.
DO. NOT BUY ANY SONOS PRODUCT UNTIL THEY FIX THEIR APP. THEIR APP BREAKS THEIR SPEAKERS. MAKING THEM VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PROPERLY USE.
🐮💩
