    I couldn't find much info on this with Ardour so thanks for this, it really helped me out.

    Great tut - thanks!
    Ardour is fantastic, it sounds great and I love the time stretching facility too. Ardour reminds me of using Logic back in my Mac days.
    Apparently Kim Cascone swears by Ardour - it's great to know that it's used by professionals, it's a testament to how good it is.

    Helpful - that got me started thanks!
    What i don't seem to have found out how to do is record these controller movements along with the midi tracking. What I get seems to be OK for final real time playback only.

    @sonodrome: Yeah, I hear people say that. I don't see really it. I think the GUI looks fine. But then again, I couldn't really care less what it looks like as long as it works.
    They use to have an option in LMMS that would free the windows. They would all be separate instead of stuck in the main window. But it looks like they removed that option. Which is said, because was nice if you had two monitors.

    Thanks Kris! Really cool. I looked everywhere for how to do this on my new Nektar Impact Lx Series Midi Keyboard... I found this by chance. Anyone who knows where more tutorials or just forums on Midi controllers and (assigning midi) sliders/knobs in Ardour or other DAWS , it would be very appreciated.

    @metalx1000 Excellent, can't wait for MIDI editing, that'll be amazing!
    Yeah I've tried LMMS, and I like the idea of it, and it has some great features - nice sounding soft synths, sequencers and Import of MIDI and FLP files, kind of like a free and open version of Fruity Loops, but the user interface is awful - On my little laptop screen all the windows within windows are a headache, I'd love to see it get a GUI update.

    That is exactly what I need. I have a Korg Trinity collecting dust and I am planning in connecting to my Linux laptop and start playing/composing music. Than you very much, and any advice or links to materials related to composing and playing music with Linux OS is appreciated.

    @sonodrome: I love Ardour. I think the only thing it's missing is MIDI track editing, but Ardour 3 will have that. For now I use Qtractor for a lot of my MIDI track editing (and LMMS, but that's a little different).

    I got ardour version 2.8.16 and when I clicked on Options > Control Surfaces it doesn't show me Generic MIDI. Do I need a pluggin or update to ardour3?

    • @DigitalMetal
      @DigitalMetal  Před 10 lety

      I also have 2.8.16 installed, mine from the Debian SID repositories. I also don't have the "Generic MIDI" option. It might have moved at some point. I would check the Ardour website.
      If you find an answer, I would love to know what you found out :)

    Hello, is your keyboard an M-Audio Oxygen 61? I was planning to get one of those and I don't know if there are Linux drivers for it. Btw what distro are you using? And also do you know if you could do this without JACK?

  • @kbestrada
    @kbestrada Před 11 lety

    hi man, quick question, are you plugging your oxygen keyboard direct to your computer? or do you have a midi interface, i.e. m-track usb .... thanks!

  • @edhastie
    @edhastie Před 9 lety +1

    Can you set the program to record your changes as you made them on the keyboard? Or is it just what you hear as you play it and your additions are lost? I didn't see a track recording the movements you made on the keyboard. Thanks.

      +Ed Hastie Sorry for the late response. Yes you can. It's been so long since I've done this I really can't explain how off the top of my head. But, you can record it as you do it. Wish I was more help at this point, I know this isn't a great answer.

    hi is it possible to use my laptop keys as midi ?like in ableton

    • @DigitalMetal
      @DigitalMetal  Před 10 lety

      Ardour2, which is what I use in the video, does not have midi track abilities. The newer version, Ardour3, does have midi track abilities, but I've played with them only a little bit. So, I don't know what it has as far as keyboard abilities.
      That being said, I am 100% sure that you can hook a virtual keyboard into it, such as vkeybd, and that will allow you to use a QWERTY keyboard as a midi input. vkeybd should be in your repose, so check your package manager. Once you have it installed, open it and hook it to Ardour3 and you should be good to go.

    What is a control center click?

    • @DigitalMetal
      @DigitalMetal  Před 10 lety +1

      Control is the Key on your Keyboard labeled "Ctrl" and Center Click is clicking the center button on your mouse. I most cases it will be clicking down the scroll wheel of the mouse. On most laptops, if you don't have a center button, it can be accomplished by clicking both left and right mouse buttons at the same time.

    • @ducane5726
      @ducane5726 Před 10 lety +2

      many thanks...sounded like a stupid question but i genuinely didn't know. I have a laptop with no scroll button so I shall try this out and see. Many thanks

    • @DigitalMetal
      @DigitalMetal  Před 10 lety +1

      It's not a stupid question. A lot of people don't realize that you can center click a mouse. If you are using Linux, center click is also a very fast way to paste the last text you highlighted. It is very useful.

    • @ducane5726

      Du Cane
      It might not do it or there might be a way to set it up. It might involve holding down another key. One nice thing about Thinkpads is a real centre button :)
