During the Battle of Britain in 1940 there were French pilots who fought with the RAF against the onslaught of Hitler's Luftwaffe and the Leader of the Free French Movement General Charles de Gaulle set up his headquarters in London and worked alongside with Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill and US General Dwight D. Eisenhower and made his famous appeal to the French people on the 18 June 1940 to carry on the fight against the Nazi occupation of France.

@@dennis12dec We have to remember that the French colonies during WW2....Guyane , Martinique, Guadeloupe , French Polynésia ( Tahiti ) , New Caledonia ( near Australia ) and Saint Pierre and Miquelon ( near U.S.A and Canada ) joined the " Free French " of De Gaulle in september 1940 and " fired " the administration of the Vichy government...who , following the terms of the armistice , had to open their harbors and airfields to the Axe's forces : Germany , Italy and....Japan , since the signature of the tripartite Pact in september 1940....So if you take a look at a world's map , those territories were very stratégics points, in particular the islands of Saint and Miquelon because of the german's U. Boots in the battle of the Atlantic...( the story of the U 123 of the commander Hardegen is true and well known ...czcams.com/video/nt3hgWCDzrE/video.html ) Don't forget that the french colonies of north Africa : Algéria , Morocco and Tunisia, and , in the middle east : Lebanon... followed the orders of Vichy , like french Indochina ( Vietnam ) and so....Rommel's africa corps and the Japanese forces settled there without fighting !!! ....Just imagine that Tahiti , 3000 kms of Hawaii ( Pearl Harbor ) had done the same in september of 1940 !!! Imagine that german's U Boots had their harbors in the islands of Saint Pierre and Miquelon ( 1260 kms from Boston ) in stade of the french port of Bordeaux..( 5 500 kms from Boston ) ... to better understand , Despite the enormous distance to be accomplished from France , the U.Boot will sink 200 American freighters during the single month of February 1942 ( 834,000 tons ) without any opposition..( 800,000 tons in October 1942 )...Finally, the role of the New Caledonia was predominant during the battle of Guadalcanal ...1 million American soldiers ( americal division and 13th air force )... Australian , New Zealand ( anzac forces ) and French ( battalion of the Pacific ) will be stationed on this island ...I am still amazed that on "you tube" nobody talks about it and that many people consider that the French resistance was close to zéro...and that England was " alone " against the nazi during 1940 -41 .

@@ericdeer5887 What allies ???....after the 7th december of 1941 if you' re talking about U.S.A sir ( certainly not in september of 1940 ) . If you mean United Kingdom or Commonwealth ( Australia , New Zealand ...) their navy were so poor facing the Japanese forces in september 1940 that they were totally unable to stop anything , and even after the 7th december 1941 , with the U.S and Netherlands forces of Indonesia and Philippines , Japan invaded easily the whole area in just 3 months , taking Singapor and bombing the north of Australia . The french island of New Caledonia was saved of the invasion after the battle of the Coral Sea , but we are talking about may 1942 . In the Atlantic , the royal navy was absolutely unable to protect anything from the german's U boots until 1943 . Please sir , remember that we are talking about september 1940 . Impossible to the Royal Navy ( U.S.A were not at war against Germany ) to " take " possession of anything far from home in only 48 or 72 hours ...that was obviously not the case for the axis forces . Now , you stay absolutely free to minimize the decisive action of the French resistance overseas as the "only" victors of the Nazis have been doing for a long time.

Quite a sight to see. British and French in a cooperative effort. It does bring to mind much history to me. The French helped us Americans in our early years to gain our independence. America allied with France and Great Britain during World War Two. I personally graduated from the French Commando School in Trier, West Germany, when I was stationed in Berlin in the US Army. I met with British troops while in Germany. So much more with our countries and citizens. Glorious! May we always share friendship!

It was very nice to see (I'm a Brit living in France) but in fact the Garde Républicaine presented arms before HRH the Duke of Edinburgh and the French Ambassador, so they didn't actually assume guard duties at Buckingham Palace or at Saint James's. I was wondering whether the Garde Républicaine would provide a guard on horseback at Horseguards, but it wasn't to be. The Canadian Mounties have done that and it turned out to be a great success. Perhaps they didn't want French guardsmen and women to be seen being hassled by obnoxiously rude tourists, which sadly seems to be becoming more and more frequent. Perhaps one day they might think of celebrating the Auld Alliance/la Vieille Alliance between Scotland and France that has been in place for so much longer.

To all of those who's asking : the french soldiers can move their heads, talk and move their faces during the "repos" order, which was given before. The "garde à vous" order is the equivalent of the british guard behaviour.
In France, we do not consider that being always in "garde à vous" is important, because it's particularly stupid to keep the same posture for several hours. We use it only during ceremonies, orders from the officer and to salute an officer.

D in full splender of colour music and marching. But somehow it was dark. It is hard when the official building is in a normal city street. But I thought the application of multiple flags along the route would have perhaps helped to show the importance of the occasion.
