    A tremendous teacher! Any student will benefit from these tutorials by Neil Clark. He knows his business and how to pass on the skills to others.

    Been transitioning since December. One of the most frustrating instruments to learn. When it’s good, it’s good. When it’s bad o it’s bad. Last night they nearly went in the bin.

    This helped a lot! I’m brand new to the chanter, had it 3 weeks now. I’ve wondered how that transition works.
    Thank you for the video!

    Ha! Has anyone switched on the "CC"/Closed Captions on this clip? It's hysterical! Someone transcribed it who could NOT understand the accent, I guess, or it's some awful computer voice-recognition program that doesn't speak English. A sample: "flee the bike and so you can hear ear coming," -- "the face will fall off your shoulder and that's all key," -- "the peeps will fall off your shoulder until you get used to the balance off these pigs but as you can see I'm standing here talking Queen freely..." I can't practice now, I'm larfing so hard!!!

    Thanks Neil. I’ve just received my pipes after 5 months on the practice chanter and this was by far the clearest video I’ve found on getting started

    Great advice... stress for new pipers - remove the pipe chanter from the “top ball”... not from the bottom bell (spiral fracture - sure to result). Great video!

    Thanks for these great videos Neil. I'm onto learning my 4th tune from memory on the practice chanter so will be looking to get myself some pipes in the coming months. This video is a great overview of what to expect.

    You have just gained a new subscriber! I've always wanted to learn to play the bagpipes while I was still in school, but never had the courage to try a new instrument. I've just got my practice chanter...never too late to start! Keep up the great videos Neil!

    Hi Neil, thanks a lot for the lesson. I got 6 tunes memorized currently, so i think i am finally ready for the big pipes. I've been using a practice goose i was given for a while so I've been overly curious about the big pipes for a while now. Hoping to get my set this week or next week!

    your mic almost can't pick up your voice after you played the pipes.
    or maybe it's just my phone.

    I just got hold of an old set of pipes after a few months learning the chanter. I feel like I can't inflate the bag fast enough before it deflates. Do I need a new bag/ reeds or just more practice?

    • @NeilClark-FalkirkPiping
      @NeilClark-FalkirkPiping  Před 2 lety +1

      Alasdair, cork your bag and check it for leaks. Cork or seal 2 drones and work with one to begin. Make sure that THAT drone isn't taking too much air. Check all stocks and wood for cracks. Make sure hero isn't loose and that all reeds are firm in the seats. If it's an old leather/skin bag, basically these days it needs replaced for hygiene reasons alone. And loads of other stuff.

  • @therealjetlag
    @therealjetlag Před 3 lety

    My first pipe teacher used to shut the drones off by poking his finger inside the tops. You could switch them back on by tapping the top with you hand. Not sure how that worked.

    Hello Neil, very helpful video indeed. Thank you so much. However, your play stunned your mike. As of 15:27 your voice is just a mumbling. Any chance this can be fixed/replaced?

    hey neil, i have watched this video a few times and its great. i do have a couple of questions though, 1 being do yo let off your arm when you take a breath? i have heard lots of people say yes and no and i want a strong answer for once. my next query is where the cheapest place to get a reed protector is? i have saw loads on various sites but they are all £18 upwards.
    look forward to hearing back from you.

    • @NeilClark-FalkirkPiping
      @NeilClark-FalkirkPiping  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi there. Regardless of what other people say (may have lost a little in the wording, or translation) NO.. you don't take your arm off when you blow/take a breath. You have to maintain a constant pressure in the bag, if you release the arm to breathe/blow, that pressure will change. Just keep a steady, consistent pressure up. You're not "squeezing"... just keeping the bag tight. So if anything, its more important to maintain that pressure when you TAKE a breath. Don't think squeeze/blow... constant pressure (not neccesarily HARD pressure) all the time. Reed protectors.... Unfortunately although I'd hate to pay £18, it doesnt sound highly expensive. I think they were about £10 last time I paid, and I was getting them cheap. Good luck!

    Hi Neil ! Actually what can I do if air leaks from the tuning part? Have checked out the parts individually , there is no crack , loose ferrules that could cause it , I think the problem is with the hemp. If I add more hemp the leak is gone , but I’m barely able to move with one hand , so I had to remove one turn , but its the same as it was. I have pre waxed hemp on the joints , some people don’t recommend it , just cobblers wax and unwaxed hemp , but I’m not pretty sure which combination is right.

    • @NeilClark-FalkirkPiping
      @NeilClark-FalkirkPiping  Před 5 lety

      Hi Lachlan. There shouldn't really be a leak on the tuning slide unless the wood is cracked, so check that first. I don't really like the PTFE stuff, but it sounds like it may help in this instance if any leak ceases when you add hemp. I'd really need to see the pipes, all the foregoing is a guess based on experiences I've had.
