This series reminds me of the 2014 Finals. LeBron and Wade were the big stars, but the Spurs beat them with defense and ball movement. There was no clear star and anyone in their starting lineup could have won the Finals MVP. Boston looks like a very different team than they were in the 2022 Finals.
I also thinking havinf a lot of guys that were there in 2022 helps as well. They have the experience vs a young Dallas team where Kyrie is the only one whose been to this stage
I said the same thing the other day!!! Great minds think alike
was saying the same thing a few days ago, they're so unselfish
2004 pistons did it to kobe and shaq. Teams win championships. Hero ball doesn’t work
Wade was hurt, end his star days..wasnt spurs
The biggest difference (outside of adding Tingus and Jrue) between last year and this year is this season the Celtics physically are ready to go deep into every series. Last two seasons at this point they looked exhausted. Good work on the coaching and training staff to get here.
Also playing and injured Heat that would've beat them if their top players played
Also Cavs had a lot of top talent out in injured
Pacers lost their best player/engine of the team and a all nba 1st team player.
@@buddyboy4438 adorable.
Part of the road to the title is mostly about luck as well
Boston played an injured Heat, Cavs and Pacers. Lol
I like how JJ lets people talk
This ain't no ESPN were the people have no respect 😂😂😂
I like how they let JJ talk...
Man Boston’s team defense is just on another level. Going to be very difficult to overcome down 2-0.
team win at home. its always been a thing. if dallas had won just one game on the road
now that would have been bad for Boston
Luka and Dallas center missed free throws and opened bricks took down the games not how good the Celtics are.
@@bdub1934and the Celtics haven’t lost an away game.. so….
@@allowedmelmfao those missed free throws came early in the game. Not giving the Celtics credit is ridiculous 😂
Especially when you have the Mavs play style of Half Court offense
Mavs need to mess up the floor and RUN more
Bc letting them set their defense majority of the possessions is not beating the Celtics most likely
I personally like this version of Tatum… yeah I want him to score buckets, but I’ve seen him do that plenty… seeing him drive and kick, rebound, and play defense…. Just feels like he’s maturing on the court
And we’re winning
maybe next time he'll miss all his free throws and really impress you with his screen-setting
I’m glad his shot isn’t falling. He’s finally attacking the basketball consistently
@@jordanjohnson6075 i hope next game that he gets more turnovers so he can set good screens. or his misses all his freethrows so he can be better at offensive rebounding. we're in a crazy universe where him playing horrible in one way and decent in another is just as good as him actually playing well overall, so why not?
@@slightexagI get it man - his shot-making has been awful as has his shot selection at times, but you have to give Tatum credit for consistently driving into double and triple teams and finding the open guy, which has resulted in 17 assists through the first two games on 34 passes for potential assists. Seven of his 12 assists in game two resulted in shots within three feet of the basket. Tatum has been rebounding the ball at a high rate as well, which is important because Horford and Porzingis aren’t great rebounders at this point - for centers at least. JT has been guarding Gafford and Lively at times as well which has caused switching issues for Dallas offensively and has allowed Boston to not double while containing the lob threat. Like I said, he’s shooting like crap and he’s due for a big game here, but he’s still a big part of what the Celtics are doing here and why they won the first two games of the Finals.
JJ, don’t burn out man. You often hint at how hard you are working and it’s important to stay healthy mentally. Love the pods!
JJ, thank you so much for these breakdowns this postseason. It's refreshing to watch a program where the only agenda is discussing basketball and the nuances of the game.
For real. ESPN is like having cereal for breakfast.
Tatum shot the ball horribly in game two but that was the best I have seen him play as a playmaker. 12 assists and 3 turnovers for a 4/1 assist/turnover ratio. Magic Johnson level distribution.
This is exactly what I was thinking
He would've had even more assists had they not been so cold from outside especially in the first half of the game. He made so many great kickout passes that didn't convert to points.
Tatum has had a better series than luka.....luka stats: 60-18-11 12TOs....tatum: 34-20-17 9T....meanwhile luka has played near zero D while tatum has SHUTDOWN THE FIVE.....THE FIVE!!! WITH 20 BOARDS TO SHOW FOR IT
@@ceerawlins3412 not sure where you got your stats but Luka has 62p/21r/12a total for the series.. Tatum has 34p/20r/17a total. No one anywhere is saying Tatum is playing better than Luka. Even with that many turnovers
@@simonbaribeau4853 they should be! One guys is being doubled and shutdown the five....the other guy is in man and has given up about 87 points

Jrue going from 2nd best player on a contender to a 4th option is despicable😂
he’s way older now
Because all celtics starters are THAT good
jrue's gonna be finals mvp if he keeps it up
On the bucks, Middleton was the 2nd option.
@@BinarySk8 correct. But I said 2nd best player on the Bucks, not option. However, he is the 4th option now. Pecking order in scoring opportunities doesn’t always coincide with best player though
Somebody seen Kyrie? Last time he has been seen was in Minnesota. As if Boston having an Elite starting 5 wasn't bad enough, Kyrie decides to dissapear when Luka needs him the most.
He took shots. He just didnt make them. If Kyrie makes his shots the score is completely different. Idk what hes doing. I think the Crowd un Boston got to him more than he wants to admit. I think he plays better in Dallas
@@MrDreFrazierCeltics offense was also horrid. But I agree Kyrie should play a little better in Dallas. Even with Jrue locking him up
He’s not even disappearing, Bostons defense is just insane. You look at Luka, hes making everything with super good defense on him, his height likely helps a lot with this. Kyrie is half a foot smaller and cant use his height in the same way, its going to be hard for him when you are rotating two all defensive guards and two all defensive wings on him them at all times
I knew this was gonna happen with Kyrie, its one of the reasons I was very confident in the Celtics heading into this series. I haven't seen him have a good game in the garden in a long time, and they have the best defensive backcourt the league has seen in who knows how long.
@@MrDreFrazier ofc the score would be different if he hits his shots thats what usually happens if you make them boston just making him work for everything we got multiple bodies to throw nd switch 1 on 1 unlike the twolves
As a Celtics fan, it was crazy to me that so many people picked Dallas to win this series. Not only that, almost 80% of the betting money was on the Mavs. Have people just forgotten how good the Celtics have been all year? Even without Porzingus, they were still winning games. Seems like people talked themselves into why the Celtics couldn't win, as opposed to just looking at all their weapons and realizing they would be tough to beat in a 7 game series.
It's only 2 games, Dallas could win at home (though the Celtics have been even better on the road, undefeated in the playoffs), but it's going to be very difficult to win the next 4 out of 5 games. Celtics in 5.
They picked Dallas because they hate Boston that much lol
Good let them throw their money away
Duh, but nobody actually thought Dallas would win. Quit looking at polls on social media, we hate the Celtics, all of us, unless you’re a Boston fan you naturally hate them. We remember what made yall special, bill Russell and we remember what Boston fans did to him. We also know this team sucked and didn’t have real stars so adding two more did it. Boring super teams. There’s a reason why the CBA is doing all they can to prevent these things from happening. So congrats. You hit a home run walking up on third base
I’m a 40 plus year Boston Fan. The growth of this team is amazing. The 2nd game showed such maturity. In the past they would’ve died by the 3 when it didn’t fall. Instead they were very physically put their heads down and drove down into the paint either making the shot or getting fouled and hitting their foul shots. The defense was so top tier!
JJ putting in overtime
This team has the makings of a dynasty. Core players all locked up, Coach that’s made for the modern nba, 2 superstars, and most importantly no egos

last year the nuggets had the foundations for a dinasty, this year the Celtics do. I don't think people realize how tough it is to win consecutive championships, how dominant you have to be. Especially in modern MODERN NBA, where teams in the offseason build to beat the champions, or they build to be LIKE the champions. What wins is immitated or targeted for during roster construction.
Nuggets triggered celts trade..2025 new superteam will emerge
No egos yet. I doubt they can afford to pay White yet. KP is brittle. Al Hortford will probably be back but he's pushing 40. Tap the breaks on dynasty

Bostons has draft picks , a deep bench on cheap contracts, and 8 players that can bring it every night . Foundation for a dinasty ... 18 is coming up , alone at the top again ..
It's sad because once those contracts expire, you know they'll ask for more money, exact same situation after what happened to the warriors in their 2022 win, it get's in people's heads and they forget what got em there in the first place. Hope this boston crew stays together

I loved seeing Monica McNutt call Stephen A. out the other day. He was so offended that someone challenged him that he had no idea how to respond. Great tv moment.
If either Tatum or Brown develop into a true generational player, this team should be the favorite to win the NBA Championship for 3 to 6 years.
The takeaway is that the NBA media was way too disrespectful of Boston. 64 wins was a monumental achievement that was heavily downplayed. They have one of, if not the most well rounded roster in the NBA. Their defense is genuinely wild to watch and even when their best player looks like their 4th best player, anyone can step up. Luka is still clearly the best player on the court but we need to put massive respect on the Celtics as they have the other 4 best players on the court at any given moment
Boston has a very good team no doubt, better role players and a deep roster. But the quality of basketball, the intensity, that Dallas had to go through in the WC play-offs was on a different level. Each series against the Clippers, OKC, and then TWolves, was like Dallas battling in the finals at every stage. It's mentally and physically exhausting. That's not an excuse for Dallas' performance in this series but Celtics did not have to go through the same intensity in their run to the finals. The fifth best team in the West getting to the Finals is definitely a monumental achievement as well. It's evident Dallas came within inches of winning in the second game despite the turnovers, and missed free throws, etc. Boston better win this series for a 64-win team with the most rounded roster in the league!!
@@Marsh-wd6soi agree Dallas had a tougher run and they are evidently more gassed in this series because they had to work a bit harder to get here but the celtics run seemed so easy because they were so good. They barely had to get out of 3rd gear in any of the series because they are so much better than everyone not because the teams they okayed were so bad. You can’t just put it all down to the opposition.
best offensive player. luka barely plays defense
Pacers would have beat the Mavs
1 week of rest for both teams. now, gassed. 🙀
I’m definitely a casual NBA fan who doesn’t see all of these X’s and O’s in the game. This pod teaches me a ton about what’s actually happening on the floor. It seems even just executing a couple of minor adjustments really can swing a series. Thanks for the content!
JJ i love your commentary during the games
JJ has absolutely upped his analytic timing during games. His knowledge of the game, his quickness in his analysis, and his former experiences as a player all have contributed to his quick rise. He is a lifer of the game, whether it be as a coach eventually, as a media expert, or as both. The NBA media is so bare in true basketball analysis he would be sorely missed for folks who want to listen to more than the noise and screaming matches of nothingness.
His calls during the slow mo replays has been really good in these finals
Me too, but that's because he actually knows basketball.
It’s official.. Congrats on the Laker job JJ

Always has been
I've been so frustrated with Boston for what feels like forever for their lack of taking it to the hole. Seeing it finally happen is very refreshing.
People were overreacting to regular season shot selection and gameplan. In the Playoffs every game has a gameplan. Regular season you often go into games blind because back to backs and it’s a very long season.
@@Instantur Very likely you are correct but I'm taking about more than just regular season.
I'm talking for probably three or four years now I've been frustrated with them because they want to be the Splash Brothers 2.0 and they ain't. In my opinion you've got to be good and consistent at getting into the paint and when you can do that it opens up all kinds of other opportunities.
Boston is just too stacked. Dallas is ahead of schedule as a Mavs fan I’m not resigned to losing but I hope Nico goes and gets Bogdan or Malik Monk…. Dallas needs one more bucket getter especially when Kyrie plays hide and seek
Okay i just wanna acknowledge that JJ Redick talks/podcast are always a great listen because for 1) He's a ball player so he knows the game 2) he keeps things real and (to my knowledge) no bias opinions 3) He will give flowers but also CONSTRUCTIVELY criticize teams & players. Its just a breathe of fresh air compared to a lot of these other Sports Media platforms that will only talk down/bad about teams & players because they dont know anything about the game only whats gonna clickbait people.
Boston is a better road team too by the way. I can’t believe “experts” thought Dallas really had a shot 😂😂😂
Better on the road? They lost 4 at home and 14 on the road
@@nate9798he’s talking about in the playoffs, they are undefeated on the road in the playoffs so far
Boston hasn’t won it yet.
Boston without Porzingis was a totally different team on defense, they were allowing 60 points in the first two quarters, lost first game in a couple of series.
This is what people were comparing Dallas against, not the full team.
@@slg9752It’s over
Boston opened the door wide and invited Dallas to win game 2. The missed wide open 3’s, the slow down of pace at the end of the game, Tatum couldn’t make a bucket if you threatened him……and Dallas still lost. They won’t shoot like that again. And they are clearly the team with more stamina because they are working Dallas hard and Luka looked completely gassed in Q4. I know Dallas isn’t a terrible team but this is a terrible match up.
And remember….Boston is consistently a better road team.
FR, I really wonder if the rest of series, just give us one game that everyone is making shots, I really want to see the fire power
....
Dallas made 6 threes game two. So whatever you claimed Boston gave them, Dallas gave them more. It’s not normal for Kai and role players to miss open threes.
Great coverage 💯Thanks for spending the time to create and share this content 🤙🏾
Luka is gassed by the 4th quarter, he is not going to save the day in the last few minutes of the game. He is not conditioned to be playing this deep into the season. Kyrie may get better at home, but our defense is all over him. This is when his skill can’t make up for his height.
Exactly
Yea it can happen when you have to be best playmaker, scorer, catch and shoot guy, rebounder and keep chasing multiple all star caliber guards meanwhile you are hurt all over.
Having Porzingis back changes our defense tremendously, Jrue and White can switch on Luka without worrying about perimeter defending on the other shooters, because Porzingis can close the distance on shooters much faster than our other bigs.
Luka chases nobody so stop saying he even tries

So I have figured out what everybody is missing. This is East Coast basketball against West Coast. If you remember the Lakers always had great scoring teams but lost to the Celtics until they get a defensive presence. If you look at the score of this series, it is driven by defense not offense. Celtics control pace and character of this game….a defensive series and the Celtics actually do not care about scoring….just winning

@@delciopimentel3330good point. Banging bodies all game would be exhausted.
They have Lively and Gafford for that, they need to step up on the offensive end.
There is a reason you aren't coaching an NBA basketball team.
You steal this take from draymond?
I never hear people talk about experience and physical/mental preparation. It's that experience and having been there that is a major plus for Boston. They aren't panicking, they're staying with the game plan, and not letting anything get into their heads. You can see the younger, more inexperienced teams losing it. It happened to Indy. It happened to Minn. And it's happening to Dallas now. The entire Boston team has been there before, except Zingis, but he's a pro. He knows what he's got and he's bought in 100%. I've also noticed that Boston doesn't look tired like they have in past years. Mentally and physically this is a much different team from past years. Also, keep in mind that Boston is a much better road team than a home team. They may not sweep, but I don't see this series going more than five games. Boston has earned this ring big time and they're ready to collect.
Best analysis I’ve seen so far good work gentlemen 👏🏼
People are misunderstanding whats happening here. The celtics have not changed their defensive gameplan much. The fact that kyrie ist struggling has less to do with the fans or just that kyrie has an off game. They are just defending him incredibly well because they aren‘t blitzing luka as much.
That’s not causing Kai to miss wide open shots he makes with his eyes closed. 0-12 in Boston says even the shitty Boston teams without Jrue proves it. Quit making it up to give your team more credit. It’s weak
Dallas is in trouble because their two best players are also their worst defenders. That won’t change in this series.

Man, if tatum starts heating up, they will be unbeatable. And I believe he will heat up to get a 40 point game.
I live in Dallas but am so happy for Jrue’s success and throwing his name in for MVP, intentional or not. He looked DIFFERENT than everyone in game 2. JB’s glow-up is fun to watch. Hope Dallas makes it interesting but wouldn’t be surprised at a sweep. Yay hoops ❤
The only discourse about hoop I wanna hear!
Good analysis😁…. Educative😇
As dominating as Boston has been, the Mavs still ultimately got it down to within striking distance under 10 pts. It’s like we shouldn’t feel like the Mavs have any chance, but we have to think they have some chance.
So dare JT to shoot jumpers like westbrook? Interesting proposal. Does kidd dare unlock tatum?

Tatum is a 38% three point shooter. This is dumber than the Warriors leaving Jaylen open in the game they were blown out by 60.

I would love to see the Celtics make 20 3s on Wednesday. But it’s too good to be true. Hopefully we can get game 4 and go close this out in 5
Celtics will sweep
Luka whining about his teammates and throwing shade after thr game is what stands out to me. Maybe they should stop feeding him the ball for a game to see how he performs.
Celtics are like 2004 Pistons with better offense
It's evidently clear after 2 games that the Mavericks just haven't been battle tested. The Clippers without Kawhi, an over-acheiving OKC team, and a team led by a 22 year old. They didn't have to prove anything on their road to the finals and it shows.
That doesn’t even make sense. Kai not making wide open shots ? Ok that makes sense.
Mavs with two stars ( 1 really ) against an allstar team starting lineup? Ok.
The celtics set a new standard team building
The ball movement by Tatum and brown is amazing. Brad stevens is an amazing coach (yes he’s the mastermind Joe is a fivurehead)
Yall love a conspiracy even when it doesn’t make sense and isn’t needed
No credit to Udoka?
Brad isn’t the coach anymore man. He deserves credit for building the roster but Joe creates the gameplan.
A word for Derrick White. Great play on both ends. He lags behind no one.
Kidd has to use Gafford more, unless he is injured. He helped the offense flow so much better and the Cs bigs are struggling to guard him. Also Kyrie has to get it going or they have no chance, seems like he's in his head against his former team.
Use Gafford to do what? Stand down in the post gunking up Lukas drives?

Good stuff.
JJ getting right to the point all the hot take artists are missing. Dallas is just allowing so much early penetration of like basic crossovers at the top of the arc. It’s wild.
JJ, as an old hoop-head, I wish you the best in however you continue to share true bb knowledge, player rationality, and experience as a former player. If you decide to enter the coaching arena or stay in the media game, we all benefit. If the coaching bug has you, surround yourself with those who have been in the coaching trenches and those young energetic staff members, too. You need both. If you leave the media world, the basketball junkie world will miss your SKILLZ in a field primarily filled with noise and nothingness. ARETE
I'm surprised they didn't talk more about how big of a difference Porzingis makes, especially on the defensive end. We were allowing almost 30 points per quarter in the first half the previous series, now we have a big that can close out the space for someone as big as Luka when he wants to drive, and he also is good on perimeter defense against shooters, which allow Jrue and White to switch on Luka and not worry as much about the shooters.
I love Luka and Kyrie, but seeing how well Boston executes and play disciplined is just beautiful to watch.
8 turnovers that lead to 12 points and 4 missed free throws and you lost by 8! Can’t win when your best player plays like that
it’s refreshing to see and hear people who actually know basketball talk and comment on it. All the talking heads and comment sections are just filled with ridiculous takes
The better team has been clear for the last few finals. GSW, Denver, and now Boston have been the favorites for a reason.
JJ just mentioned a keyword regarding the C's: DISCIPLINE.
I haven’t really been caught up on this podcast but whatever happens to tommy? Seems like he doesn’t have him on anymore
I just don't see anyone stopping the Celtics but themselves. The fact that they flipped Jrue Holiday for Marcus Smart is crazy.
The one-on-one defense is critical. Dallas thrived by forcing defenses to collapse and opening up a shooter or by drawing the opposing big into a bad switch, thereby opening up the lob. Boston doesn't do that for either. I give huge credit to White, Holiday and JB who have played stellar defense on Dallas' superstar duo. It seems like Boston is satisfied to let Holiday (arguably the best guard defender in the NBA) sit on Kyrie while they throw a rotation at Luka. The goal, from what I have seen, isn't to stop Luka. It's to force an injured Luka to win a game by himself. Boston cuts off the rest of his supporting cast and limits Kyrie, thereby putting everything onto Doncic who is dealing with two or three different injuries. I think Boston is fine with Luka getting hsi 30-35 points on moderate efficiency so long as three of the other four players struggle.
I agree with that strategy 110%. If Luka wins a game because he drops 70 against a rotation of strong defenders, then so be it. What I don't want to see is a game lost because PJ Washington goes ballistic and drops 25.
JJ is right when it comes to the Mavs it's all ball containment
Playmaking Tatum > step back three Tatum
Or both
Why don't the Mavs simply back off Tatum and Brown in order to keep in front of the ball? They do not shoot threes at a high enough percentage to be worried about it. They're getting shredded by drives anyway...
Lol!
Mavs havent beaten the Celtics since March 2022 and Kyrie hasnt beaten them since June 2021. Idk how so many NBA fans just ignored that going into this series. Celtics in 4, but hopefully 5 so they can hoist the trophy in the Garden.
Wow didn't know that going in. That's crazy
I think that’s the only reason they will allow one game and it will be game 4 Mavs elimination game
I mean the Kyrie thing seems to be real, but this mavs team has been the team it is for just a few months, why would anyone care that they couldn’t beat them 2 years ago?

i’m old enough to remember everyone saying the celtics aren’t beating any team out west, can’t wait to hear what the new excuses are
I'm a Mavs fan and to be fair, no team in the league was gonna beat this Celtics team in a 7 game series. They are just too good, too many pieces, length, defense, shooting, coaching. If this team stays together they can win multiple in a row if they stay healthy
Boston is yet to go off, explode in this series, i think game 3 in Dallas Boston will go offffffffff in a big way.
Facts I think the same
One thing that I was thinking Dallas should do (idk if it would work) is basically do what Boston is doing and live with Boston getting drive in 2s. Obviously you dont want it to be too easy, but if another defender comes to help it's just gonna be a kickout and a swing pass 3. Its very hard to guard bcuz all of them r good 3 point shooters and can hit at a high percentage. 3 is more than 2, need to be ok with giving up the 2 over a 3 more times than not imo
I didn’t know Raekwon started doing podcasts. Cool.
1.Luka needs to play defense on his guy and not help and be in LaLa land
2. Mavs rotation players need to drive with force and create contact to go to the line.
3. Kyrie needs to step up n not give into the crowd
4. Dallas defense needs to rotate better and box out.
