They're an absolutely incredible breed. Out of the 130 000 Walers that Australia committed to the Great War, only one made it home. Sandy, who belonged to a Major General. In 2012, we only had 700 registered Waler's and part bred Waler's left, so it's lovely to see the breed becoming better known again. A lot of the Austrlian Brumby horses are actually Waler's too!

I was wondering if the Brumby was the same as the Waler - I had heard that Brumbies were used in the wars as well… I am sad for their plight now

Love this breed so much & I am honoured to be able to say I’ve had the chance to ride a waler when I was younger he was just backed the day before and his owner and I went out on a ride the day after & she put my on the stallion he was such a Gorgeous stable natured guy , I felt so safe on him he had me in his care the whole time & after I encouraged him to go into and enjoy a lope & Collected canter my friend admitted to me that that was his first canter in saddle with someone in saddle on his back . He definitely didn’t let it be known at the time as he was like a horse that had been ridden for ten or so years , strong soft in the mouth and dependable & safe to ride . I felt so in awe & honoured that I was the one who got to show him gently how fun it was to be ridden at a lope , collected canter & to go as fast as he wanted to go then come back to collected then into a trot then back into a relaxed walk all without any fuss from him what so ever and all with the lightest of hand control that I ever needed on any horse , that was when I fell deeply in love with this breed and that fella she called him Ozzie ;-D she was American from Madison county & came over here to live & to own & breed the Waler breed she had always had Quarter horses before that and I also had quarter horse x breeds myself .

I don't agree that the breed was nearly extinct, they lived on in all the stock horse herds with long ancestry blood lines throughout Australia. Many direct decendent's and close relatives of horses that went to the Desert campaign in WW1 can still be found in the breeding programs of stock horse breeders and their registry.
The belief that the only true Walers exist in wild horse herds running in outback stations is also not true, these wild horse herds originate from same original stock horse herds currently being bred on the large holdings of many hundreds of thousands to millions of acres.
the real difference being the wild herds are badly inbred while the managed herds of stock horses have been bred using the introduction of outsourced stallions to prevent inbreeding and to constantly improve the bloodlines.
