I discovered Del Shannon aged 14 in 2016. I listened to his music constantly, my mother then told me he was the favourite singer of my Grandfather (who also committed suicide, before I was born). Del has one of the best voices in rock history, and listening to any of his albums proves that he was so much more than Runaway. The idea that he may have died thinking he was a failure is heartbreaking. I will listen to him until the day I die. Rock on Del!

Del Shannon was definitely a victim of the times. Had his career started a a decade earlier. He would've been huge. By the time he blew up music hopped on a much faster train. And music changed rapidly. Much like those at the end of the 80s. Where the hair era of rock was about to be blown out of the sky. By grunge and metal bands that made Metallica sound like the beach boys. You can see this happen in, The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years. Many bands trying to catch a ride to fame, some promising. But many would be left behind and forgotten. As they wouldn't have stood a chance anyway. If you hadn't made it by 85' it was too late.
The group The Left Bank's album with Walk away Rene and Pretty Ballerina was considered Baroque, but I think rubber soul and revolver have Paul songs that probably started it

When I heared he committed suicide in 1990 as Prozac might have been the cause it broke my heart. Dale has always been a legend to me as I was born in late 1961 and I always loved the old music. My 1st LP that I purchased was Dales Shannon's Greatest Hits back in1978 in a record store. That Christmas his L P. 1978,1979,1989 kept me together. You cannot ever give up. I miss you man miss you a lot.
"RUNAWAY" was on the "AMERICAN GRAFFITI" soundtrack. The lyrics are very simple as well as the arrangement. It waa noted for being an early use of electric keyboard in pop.

Del was on tour in England with the Searchers and Peter and Gordon On the bus he wrote a song and told the Searchers that he wrote it for them and they politely declined and Peter Asher says "Me and Gordon will do it". and it was a big hit in the Buddy Holly style and I can just imagine Del doing it himself but never have. It's a sweeter song minus Del's crazy instrument and gravel voice which don't get me wrong I love him and had the album shown in this short and many of his cool Canadian version hit singles on the Quality label. Quality distributed so many small and large record labels from the 40s till the beginning of the eighties including Sun records Johnny Cash albums,ep's and 45's with in some cases different pictures on the covers Apex records in Canada had all the cool US Roulette rockabilly like Jimmy Bowen and Buddy Knox . And the Canadian Regency records green label in Canada had all the early Specialty records Little Richard and all of the King records including Hank Ballard and James Brown all on the green label. Sometimes the front covers were exactly the same the as the US because of the whole front covers being printed in America and shipped to Canada. I've had different pressings of the same album and the later version is usually all printed and manufactured in Canada and even later versions will have the original american label and only have small print of the Canadian company as being the distributor. My buddies and I were like posers back in the day trying to and many times successfully trying to meet our favorite stars and somehow getting the info about where to go after concerts and meet bands at after gig parties. I was a partner in owning a used record store in the eighties and that is part of it because any upcoming band who came to Vancouver would get us to sell their self released records if they weren't yet signed by a major label. We used to go to Seattle a couple times a week all the way up to when Nirvana hit. Haven't been to America since about 1990

We had one class together and we would talk about stuff, including oldies, but goodies music. She told me that I would get along very well with her dad. Only I had no idea she was Del Shannon‘s daughter. She never told me who her dad was. I found out after the fact..
