I’m annoyed that the DCEU Batman was based on the dark knight returns. Why couldn’t we have gotten a more definitive and familiar version of the the character.
Not a little; it's excessively overrated. Not only should new writers realize Batman was saved by Dennis O'Neil (my favorite and definitive Batman writer), but everybody should stop using TDKR as the basis. Batman: The Animated Series took cues from every era of the comics than just Frank Miller's, and it's the definitive version of the character. The characterization in the book is the very major thing I have issues with, since Batman is a sadist and mentally unstable thug, and Superman is the goverment's slave. Frank Miller is one of the worst hacks and enemies to both heroes. Fight me!
Miller's version of Batman is actually the closest to the original Bill Finger/Bob Kane from 1939. That early Batman was a ruthless vigilante. Miller went back to that and updated it.
@@MutantsInDisguise It's true. I understand DKR isn't your cup of tea but that doesn't make it invalid. Batman's root is in the Shadow pulp magazines. The Shadow was a brutal crimefighter. That's the way Batman was written in the beginning..before censorship got in the way and they had to soften him up. O'Neil's Batman is cool but still a watered down version.
@@booneaveri7786 no. If you believe Christopher Coumbus discovered America, I'm very sorry for you, who has no historical knowledge. But hey, people are free to believe in the lies they want, aren't they?
The problem with The Dark Knight Returns is that it is written by one of Guano's biggest fanboys henceforth, he pulls off even more Marty-Stu shit than usual.
wtf do you mean? Batman suffers the whole book, overcomes lots of challenges through hard work, loses in battles, and even presented with situations where he can't win. How the fuck is he Marty Stu?
From the tone of Man of Steel, this new movie would benefit from Lex Luthor: Man of Steel as an influence, particularly the Bruce Wayne/Lex Luthor partnership (sort of) to unite against the alien and all powerful Superman. The destruction of Metropolis at the end fit so well into Luthor's rise to power. And this would provide a legitimate reason for Batman to fight Superman.
With Batman vs Superman being the sequel to Man of Steel, I think Batman vs Superman, may very well be 'The Dark Knight Returns' from Superman's perspective.
The only thing I hate about The Dark Knight Returns is how it diminished all of the hard work writers like O'Neil and Moench did on the character before it came out, because majority of people is now acting like it was Frank Miller who saved Batman's ass from camp and gags. It's still a great story. Granted, Miller's artwork, while the best it's probably ever been, still has some hickups here and there. But overall, a great superhero deconstruction.
The Acting Nerd yea well also I don’t really like or care about his characterization of Batman or Superman either and if anyone were to ask me which is the greatest Batman Story my answer is easy it’s the Court of Owls not what anyone would always say Dark Knight Returns
Just because it doesn't have the look of your regular superhero aesthetics doesn't mean that the art isn't good. Art is subjective after all. And too say that Frank Miller isn't good at drawing is just wrong. Go and take a look at the beginnings of his career and see for yourself. He also drew some of the coolest and most fluid fight sequences in his Daredevil run. Nowadays he might not bother anymore or isn't able to put more effort into but he definitely could draw. His change of style was intentional at the time.
People see one video sayin that the dark knight returns is overrated, then hop on the bandwagon ,or try to be that one person who thinks everything is "overrated" if it's not something that they personally like 😂💀 like it or not Frank Miller did a hell of a job on that book and everyone knows it, the man brought new light to comics as a whole with a more realistic and dark tone, don't hate.
The Dark Knight Returns needs to be left alone already. Let it exist as it is. But filmmakers aren't creative enough so they all keep using it and saying its their inspiration and quoting it, that is what will make people get tired of the original story and begin to hate it. I love TDKR but it needs to exist on its own.......and Dark Knight Rises was very disappointing, they could have done so much more and had Batman be Batman and maybe get a new suit at the end. They could have done False Face, Black Mask, Penguin, Hugo Strange, Riddler, Mr. Freeze, etc. But we gone a bad Bane with no venom in him and a plan that made no sense. Look at the Arkham games, why can't we see something like that in a film. Enough "realistic cripple" Batman. He needs to be out there fighting 10+ guys at a time. Look at the chruch scene in Kingsman, something like that.
The Dark Knight Returns is overrated mediocre trash, I can name at least 20 Batman stroylines that are extremely dark & 1000000000000000X superior to Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Robin Year 1, Batgirl Year 1, Daugher of The Demon, The Killing Joke, A Death in The Family, A Lonley Place of Dying, Knightfall, No Mans Land, Hush, War Games, Under The Hood. Batman and Son, The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghoul, Batman RIP, Battle for The Cowl, Batman Reborn, Revenge of The Red Hood, Streets Run Red, The Black Mirror, Born to Kill, Court of Owls, Death of The Family & Eternal are all better than TDKR. I hope we see adaptations of these stroylines in future Batman movies by Ben Affleck.
The dark knight returns and year one were great when they released simply because they fundamentally changed the batman universe and comics by making it extremely dark and more realistic for the first period in comics history. The art was horrible and the story was great but the fun of comics was absent. They are great books but are highly overrated in my opinion.
Yeah it's overrated and it sucks. The people who are quick to praise it only do so because they think it adds credibility to their comic knowledge lol i'd be willing to bet money over half of these dark knight returns fans haven't even read the entire book. The mutant dialogue is nearly unreadable, the artwork (If you can call it art) is trash, and bruce seems kinda like a pediophile at times with carrie.
Eric Eugene exactly! I read it with such high expectations and came out very disappointed. Also the art is awful and impossible to understand and follow
I own long halloween, Killing Joke (which is more of a joker book but okay.) Year One and Black Mirror. I've read Son Of The Demon however, sasly I don't own it. I do own TDKR and the other four books you compared it to. Let me just start off by saying Year One isn't better it's just as amazing. Now, let me just say my honest opinion. The Long Halloween is an awesome arch sure. But doesn't hold a candle to TDKR nor will it ever. Black Mirror is also really good but lije The Long Halloween Doesn't even come close to being TDKR. And finally The Killing Joke, well honestly I don't viev as a Batman story and nor do I know someone who does. Its MUCH more of a Joker story than Batman. And that's all I have to say.
When i have known about dark knight returns. I have discovered that this story doesn't even take place in the future at all. It is actually set in a world with modern technology and retro style fashion. Just like Batman the Animated Series. Batman Beyond is the only batman franchise that actually takes place in a dystopian future. It is not considered canon to the original Batman stories.
It's your opinion but I don't see how Year One and the other books you mentioned are superior to Dark Knight Returns. Once a story can be considered great I don't see a point in ranking them because then it really just becomes a matter of taste.
It just is, honestly. I recently re-read both and Year One is so perfectly paced and delightfully written while TDKR is so bloated and clumsily put together in comparison.
@@SpaceDyeDream I recently re-read them as well and while I can totally understand your viewpoint and agree to the structure of Year One, I cannot agree to it being better. I understand that one can like it better for the reasons that you mentioned.
I came to DKR late in the game with many recommendations, and also found it mediocre. Batman himself is not a Batman I recognize; he's a self-important douche with dialog pulled straight from every cheesy Vietnam era war movie from the 70s and 80s. He is essentially the villain from Small Soldiers. The mutants are of zero interest and about as generic as can be, serving to function essentially as punching bags to give Batman something to throw his weight against. The interpretations of the Joker and Two-Face are okay-ish. I'm sure they were gritty and controversial for the time, but going up against Mister Gutsy Batman leaves them with little more than to kill themselves for something to do. I spent the entire read with a Spock eyebrow, wondering what people were seeing that I didn't. If you love it, more power to you. Maybe you had to be there at the time; but as someone who grew up in the nineties, I found it to be of no use to me, emotionally or intellectually.

To say that The Dark Knight Returns is overrated is saying you do not like Batman or what he represents...Frank Miller saved the name Batman from going down the drain we should praise him for eternity
You shouldn't state that some batman comics are better than this one, cause comics are subjective, like any art. Plus I don't see anything bad in being influenced by TDKR, cause there hasn't been a live-action TDKR film yet, and yeah, now we can see that BvS turned out to be a mess, but the problem wasn't that it was influenced by TDKR, but because it was poorly written. ffs, even the scene where Batman beats Superman doesn't borrow Miller's lines, which were perfect, but instead they come up with new lines, which sound cringe af.
You can say anything that is popular is overrated. You can say Citizen Kane is overrated, Thriller is overrated or super mario bros is overrated. Why can't you just say you don't like something that everyone else doesn't like?
Bummer they didn't continue as they planned to do in the movies with Batman getting back to his more heroic ways step by step with I kid you not Robin (Kelly) reignites his classic style of crime fighting which sounds interesting because she's usually around to push an end piece but the DCEU is a new setting with new versions pulled from best and mixed together well at least was intended to til they went bam they're the Avengers too. Hate how they did him in Justice League they just go what he was never a character meant to go on a journey he's Keaton Batman 2.0 with a little bit of Stark in mannerisms and personality look how he takes on Flash to be his Spider-Man oh and Superman he's the third coming of Donner's.
Dark night returns #1-2 is the best batman anime for sure. I don't have a definitive batman story. How can there be just 1 with a character like batman. But if I had to choice. It would be Hush. The art is phenomenal and the story is great. I would say all in all year 0 is the best batman opener and dark knight returns is the best closer.

@3:05 what you state is bullshit! The ONLY aspect that those listed comics is superior is by the art work. THAT'S ALL. DKR is 20x better. And Adam West??? Are you frikin serious??? Ok I can't respect u anymore, West was an INSULT. Granted, the show totally nailed it in visuals, yes. The West show was amazing to LOOK at, esp. the villains and Robin. Get your shit straight, two completely different things. @5:17 + 5:40 Okay, your back on good again. YES. That is 100% correct.

To say that The Dark Knight Returns is overrated is saying you do not like Batman or what he represents...Frank Miller saved the name Batman from going down the drain we should praise him for eternity
Keep lying to yourself, man.
No
Frank miller is my favourite batman writer
keanu, et tu
Okey than Batman Oddessy is the best Batman comic book ever 😂😂
+Felix Nolasco but I do like dark knight returns. I just don't think it's the best batman comic
I want some of what this guy is smoking. Fucking fanboys smh...
These movies ain't anime...
We need to get back to Bronze Age Batman
omg, shut up. The Dark knight returns is the best Batman comic book of all time.
shitty art. an ok story. crappy sequel and miller bs and fluff. very nice.
21 Swords dumbass do some research
21 Swords Frank Miller's art is extraordinary, one of the best in the history of American comics.
Piero della Francesca . Wait.... You're serious? LoL.
Lutyman pinkman . Even if it were the best, doesn't mean it couldn't be overrated.
It’s just so UGLY!!!!
i hate all gary stu characters: batman, the joker, superman, bugs bunny, droopy, jerry(from tom and jerry), itchy(from itchy and scratchy), etc.
by the way, i hate all mary sue characters too: harley quinn, bella swan, ginny weasley, sally acorn, etc.
The 1966 show is freaking horrible
Not only main the costume but in a teaser scene you can see batman wearing The Batman vs Superman showdown suit in The Dark Knight Returns
But press the mute button as it plays, because that was mocking comics. It was a PARODY that adults understood while kids weren't aware they were secretly making fun of us.
@3:18 You got a point exactly. That is totally true. Because they are kiss ups. They're a bunch of liars.
@4:03 you're full of shit again. That last Bale movie showed Batman QUITTING. NOT RETIRING. Batman is NOT A QUITTER. You DO know what retirement is right? It's when you'r too old, so you step down cuz your FUCKING OLD. Was Bale an old man?? NO. HE WAS A QUITTER, he was a pathetic quitter, the LAST thing Batman is. Get your shit straight, two completely different things.
@5:17 + 5:40 Okay, your back on good again. YES. That is 100% correct.
The Nolan Batman films were terrible. Batman was the least interesting character in his own movie.
the Nolan films were amazing stfu, even though the joker was better than batman in the dark knight but still, the last one was the worst, I must admit, firstly it was a bit boring, secondly catwoman was terrible, thirdly banes death was utter disappointing shit, and finally where the fuck was adam west
+pati1234 white awwwww, is my stubborn refusal to go along with the herd twisting baby's diaper?
Too fucking bad. I can have any opinion I want, and if you don't like it you can go sit in the corner and make bitch pie.
Hate this book with a passion.
