Movement is incredibly underrated by many people, so it's good to see it being rated quite highly.
Technique is close to perfection for me, so it's also my absolute favourite.

    1. Technique - loved your comment on Run - best track is the outro, 'Dream Attack'
    2. PC&L (swaps with #3) - Your Silent Face (aka KW1) is the best thing on a great album
    3. Music Complete (swaps with #2) - try the extended album if you can.
    4. Low-Life - also, Sunrise for *that bass*
    5. Brotherhood - they played All Day Long at MIF17 gigs, hardly a dry eye - an old classic album track
    6. Movement - finding their feet, understandably
    7. Sirens - surprise shout out for the daftly titled "Dracula's Castle"
    8. Republic - Troubled times, troubled session
    9. Get Ready - apart from Crystal, the spirit doesn't break through

I really like " Get Ready ". I think it's a very good Comeback album, just when it looked like New Order had disappeared for good. But their debut album will always be my favorite. Would However like to acquire their second one.

    My Top 5
    1) Technique

Wow. I absolutely cannot believe that there is someone who would rank the albums almost the exact same way that I do. I think literally the only changes I'd make would be swapping 8 and 6. I NEVER meet people who like Movement as much as I do.

Enjoyed your countdown. New Order are a tricky beast to rank. Mine would probably be
    1) Technique
Perfect summation of their 80s rule. Very cohesive. Amazing tunes.
    2) PC&L
The emergence of the NO sound. Love the DIY feel, and a sense of new frontiers.
    3) Lowlife
    Crazy here-goes-nothing synth pop brilliance.
    4) Brotherhood
Nice balance between rocking songs and synth stuff. Love the minimal artwork.
    5) Get Ready
Great semi comeback. Killer tunes. Noisier guitars due to abscence of Gillian?
    6) Movement
OK so I need to revisit this I think. I feel it might climb given more chance.
    7) Republic
Regret is stone cold classic. But some sterile production and underwritten songs dominate the 2nd half
    8) WFTSC
Again probably need to give this more time - I do love the title track
    9) Music Complete
Fine, but without Hook feels - ironically - incomplete

  • @Rorschach.

Technique is, to me, the best album I've ever heard. The mighty outro triplet of Mr Disco, Vanishing Point and Dream Attack is unstoppable.
The definitive box set series of these albums are being put together with such love and attention to detail that I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Movement. It is a monumental album, very ambitious, very unique. The Him is a powerful highlight on that album. Crashing bass and drums. Perhaps the album needs a remaster.

I think Technique is pretty good, but I'm surprised that people are ranking it so high. I'd probably put it as 5th, with either Power Corruption and Lies or Substance (if you want to count it) as my favourite. I also think Get Ready is underrated, and probably the best album of the 2000s-2010, though Music Complete is nice too

Wow Bret, I would have to give you a capital A for your New order knowledge. Geez, you really know their music.
You made a strong point when talking about 'Movement'. They were still feeling themselves out as to who does what in the band. My favorite track is the opener too. 'Dreams Never End'.
Well alright, we both agree on their best album. "Technique' got played a lot when I bought it. I actually bought the UK release because Newbury Comics sold it first. >
I only got to see New Order live once in the 80's. One of the backup bands that night in 1987 at the Great Woods Amphitheater was none other than Gene Loves Jezebel. The other was a band you may know called Echo and The Bunnymen. Not a bad triple bill at all. Why don't they have shows like this one anymore?
Excellent post Bret. I love when you do these ranking videos!~

Fantastic video Bret. I was a huge New Order fan and was fortunate enough to see them many times in the UK in the mid 80s. I still have every album, 7" and 12" they released up until Brotherhood - after that I thought they went a bit too "poppy" for me and I moved onto what I perceived to be "cooler" bands at the time. (Probably Metallica or something!) As a result of this I missed out on all their later albums and I'm ashamed to say I haven't even heard Technique.

I feel like GR in particular is often wildly overlooked, it seemed the opposite when it was first released but by this point I just think it's just such a strong set of songs brought together with some of the best production work on any of their albums. Hi Bret,
awesome video and list! I realised how many New Order albums i actually miss in my collection!
I remember when "Republic" came, i was very doubtful about it, since they dropped the synthesizers, but when i heard it i really liked it. Sometimes you shouldn't listen just with your feelings but with your ears as well. ;)
You seems to have a lot of knowledge, can you answer me:
I have a New Order-song that i have huge childhood memories from, it's "Subculture" from "Low life". But it is in a album remix on "Low life" and i have only found it on one other album, the collection "1987". But it is completely erased from all other compelations, like it never existed. Is there a special reason for "Subculture" almost being banned by the band?

    • @BretHelmsLifeOnThisPlanetBlog
      @BretHelmsLifeOnThisPlanetBlog  Před 9 lety

JörgenS Thanks for tuning in to the video, Jorgen. Their is a remix of 'Subculture' that is included on the second CD of the 2008 Collector's Edition of Low-life that I mentioned in the video - it's the John Robie remix. I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for.

    • @juju5568
      @juju5568 Před 4 lety +1

      Worst track on Lowlife.
Awful 7, not enough effort in making and weak all round music. Rubbish aswell..
Ceremony, Temptation and Thieves like us are much more advanced and more imaginative in creating a record.
They had massive charts success with Blue Monday and Regret.
The Perfect kiss and Bizzare love triangle did extremely well, but I don't think they really cared much about having a number 1, hit single.
World and Krafty were terrible choices for singles.
They had fine time and round & round, that would get more attention at the clubs than played on the radio stations!
Temptation is probably one of my favourite live songs ( & Bernard's).
That is brilliant and joyful for the melody and sound.
Dream Attack and Age of consent are ace songs for the bass riffs and keyboards.
The Village is a wonderful song for the rhythms and guitar.
Confusion was a real gem of 12'
Radio stations never liked playing because of their time.
New order now only seem to play singles and the best
      Records from Joy Division.
As it is and when it was 🎸🎹🥁👍

Great video, I had a question about Movement...What's the story behind the cream-colored cover you have there? All the copies I see online have a light blue cover on Movement. Curious about that variation! I only own P, C & L, and the Ceremony and Temptation singles, so I'm a pretty new collector to New Order. I may have to get Technique next based on your strong recommendation.

I'm pretty sure I have the original 12in with the floppy disk sleeve for Blue Monday stuffed away somewhere in my collection. But I rarely listen to an entire album. Select songs are usually on my phone but that's about it. I'm totally into Joy Division but for whatever reason New Order never really did it for me.

I ranked the same albums before you could influence me and there's little difference. WftSC got higher ranking with me due to the amount of replay value I seemed to get out of it. Fav song: Everything's Gone Green. Saw this track done live in 1987 with a false start of that heavy sequencer coming from matronly Gillian doing something with a CD drawer in a tall rack of stuff. Movement was an album I loved to myself b/c most of my friends in the 80's didn't know that one. Doubts Even Here was so moody. Tracks of the first side had visible patterns on the vinyl. Isn't it interesting Hook is touring what's largely considered the best and worst albums right now?

as a long time NO fan ( from joy division days)
music complete : sounds like an electronic/barney album but badged as 'new order'
waiting for a sirens call : was drivel except krafty
get ready was patchy... a good single and a couple of tunes worth re listening.. but had some you'd always skip.
republic - 3 singles were okay the rest were more like an electronic album/barney album but badged ' new order' .. not much bass playing on this album
Technique: was pretty good .. opening single was a bit boring though... vanishing point is excellent mind you.

low life: wiki is wrong perfect kiss was NOT on the album when released.. the album was excellent
Power, Corruption & Lies; SUPERB .. a masterpiece
