To summarize: out of the box the AWU has basic sports and outdoor functionality shown in a spectacular way, the F7X has spectacular sports and outdoor functionality shown in a basic way.
Absolutely. Which means that perhaps the more interesting comparison would be with the Epix gen 2, with its much brighter screen than the Fenix 7. Of course, that still doesn't solve Garmin's poorer interface
The Ultra reminds me of a smartwatch with some rugged sport stuff added whereas the Fenix is a rugged sports watch with some smartwatch features added.
FWIW: - Long-press the action button to get faster access to Siren, Backtrack, and a few other things - Control the Apple Watch with voice rather than screen or Assistive Touch (start/pause/end a specific workout, launch apps, etc) - Use Assistive Touch to control the AW with finger/hand gestures instead of using the screen ( no idea how well that works whilst running, also never actually had issues with using the screen when wet/raining, even in the shower you just blow on it to disperse the water ) - Change the app launcher layout to list, easier to find apps as they become alphabetically sorted, and gives you larger tap areas. The honeycomb layout is a misguided default. - Disable Raise to Siri during videos, as it kept activating during yours (triggered by arm raise + loud voice)
The WorkOutDoors app is the only way I made the switch from the Garmin to the Apple Ultra. Although I do miss the stellar battery life of my Garmin Fenix 7s. The jury is still out but so far I’m enjoying the ultra 👌🏽
I have the Ultra and the Tactix 7. I use both, I value both for different reasons. I would likely proceed with any future iterations of these two wearable GIANTS as long as they continue to innovate like they currently do.
The more I think about it, the more I appreciate the niche the AWU will occupy. Even within the population of endurance athletes/outdoor enthusiasts, there are people who value the sports features more than the smartwatch features and people who value the smartwatch features more than the sports features. I’ve seen some people say “a true outdoorsman would never use an AWU” and I think this is incredibly shortsighted. People can be endurance athletes/outdoor enthusiasts but still have a 9-5 job to hold. The AWU can suitably serve a purpose in both scenarios and I think those are the people who will appreciate the AWU.
Well, it depends on what one means by "outdoorsman". If your talking camping, backpacking, etc. I see no issue with the Ultra. In fact, I use it for exactly that and my everyday wear. If we're talking about endurance athletes or fitness fanatics that need/want to track their "personal battery" or other specialized fitness needs, then the Ultra likely won't fit their needs (yet).
Watched your others - good real world comparison. Surprised no trail run option on the Ultra. I’m a multi-day hiker and use a Fenix 7 but seeing this is great comparison for shorter hikes.
No doubt they will add that with next big software update. Seemed like this year got a massive update for all kinds of running metrics and screens ( LOVE them) but the trail stuff including maps should be next
I'm genuinely so shocked that you only have 92k subs, I just found your channel when searching reviews on the Oura ring; and I literally had to "oh my god" when I scrolled down and saw it, I was expecting 2-3m with the insane quality of the shots, the clean editing, the amazing reviews; all screamed "big youtuber" I hope it blows up soon! You deserve it, straight up
Dave, if you double press the Digital Crown it will quickly switch back and forth between your 2 most recent apps. This is a must know when working out, I use it all the time when running to quickly switch between the workout screen and Maps/Music/etc
For sure, I suppose in my demonstration I was trying to explain that EVENTUALLY you'll need to touch the screen even if you can quickly jump between the apps. Though there is that "assistive touch" stuff I haven't really messed with too much.
Double pressing on the Digital Crown is not efficient as I wish. Except pressing the crown and the action button at the same time to pause, I don’t find the others easy to use in action
Thank you for the comparison. I just value the race calendar, training readiness, and work outs derived from those too much to switch. Also, the battery life, and customization is so hard to pass up. It’s nice to not have to worry about the watch dying, and have all the data fields and workout parameters set up exactly how I want them.
Just from watching your video I can see how frustrated I would get when operating AW with touch display. For me Fenix all the way also because I like going on a run with 20-30% knowing it won't die on me :) Great comparison!
Garmin Epix Gen 2 (based on Fenix 7) vs Apple watch Ultra might have been a better comparison given they both have a nice bright AMOLED display. Enjoyed the video though 🙂
GARMIN ALL DAY EVERYDAY ......i have used my garmin fenix 7x saphire solar greay dlc with titanium band .....woooohhh....mouth full ......went for 7 day trip .....and it worked like a charm .....
For me the Garmin is a no brainer. I absolutely need the robust mapping and the ability to create and send to the watch custom maps. If just running city runs in known places, the Ultra would be fine. But trails and unknown places, the Garmin rocks. Recently upgraded to Epix and its the best Garmin ever.
I owned the Epix 2 for three months, and was certain that this would be the holy grail of smartwatches. Sadly this was not the case. Considering the steep price point, I had fairly high expectations. Here was my concerns: - During longer hikes the watch would just automatically stop (maybe to conserve battery?) - Heart rate readings was way off. - Constantly calibrate GPS signals. - Poor UI. - Lack of microphone. - Inaccurate sleep recordings. - Lack of connection to weather info in my area. - Refresh rate - Chunky, and uncomfortable. I was constantly aware that it was on my wrist - inadequate oxygen sat. measurements - Faulty compass I can understand why some people would want the more rugged, and less fancy sports watch, however this was not for me. Sold it, and currently waiting for the Apple watch ultra to arrive.
Added the "WorkOutdoors" app to my Ultra ($5 one time purchase price) and it allows me to easy upload trail maps. I just used it on a trail I was unfamiliar with and was able to easily follow the trail on the watch to each waypoint - until I accidentally went off the trail, but was quickly alerted as to such by the Ultra. I imagine that Apple will integrate this if and when they update Apple Maps with trail and other offroad information, but until then the WorkOutdoors app is a no-brainer and works great.
@Eirik Giske Absolute claptrap you had a faulty device, I've used dozens of Garmins, absolute joke, why would you pay over 800 bucks for a watch with no topo maps and an awful battery on the AWU. Flakes use apple real enthusiasts use Garmin.
@@rad6666 I have a few problems mentioned for Epix 2 on my Fenix 6 Pro Sapphire as well. 1) It's almost impossible to have an oxygen saturation reading and when after much effort it's done, it's always way off. 2) inacurate sleep tracking and not being able to record day naps 3) HRM is way off (not always but sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes for the entire workout leading to ridiculously low measurments if calories consumption 4) API weather has stopped to work all together, Garmin weather also once a while does not get updated I still love this watch for many reasons (offline maps, buttons, build quality...) but Garmin really needs to address these issues. Even if it's a faulty device, then why so many users have faulty devices? what happend to QC?
Amazing video. My epix is being replaced with a 7x this week. Love the screen but as I increase my mileage the bigger battery is more useful to me. The MIP display also is easier on my eyes in terms of viewing the data when running
@@jeremyjennings9861 for the same price point I could care less for the “beautiful” display. As a first responder not having to worry about the battery life even more, and the fact that it has that flash light which I use more than I ever thought came in hand! With working every day out or mountain biking once a week I was averaging close to 4-5 days. Not what was advertised.
Ah I went the other way as that mapping on the epix is more detailed and makes the fenix look terrible, but yup of that battery and flashlight means the most… it won’t be beaten and good choice
You can put frequently used apps in the dock, and press the power button to view it, then select the app you want. I think by default it’s set to most recent, but in the watch app on your phone you can change it to favourites
"when it comes to a sport watch, buttons are always better that touch screens" - Chase. I think that phrase sums it up for this review, in my opinion, Garmin is really focused on performance more than lifestyle and the apple watch is more focused on lifestyle than performance, that would be my main criteria to choose one over the other. Great review!

Good comparison! Like to see the direct comparison for certain use cases. Two suggestions for the Ultra would be the side button for multitasking and the list view for apps. The side button below the digital crown can open a list of recently viewed apps or selected favorite apps, and the list view will let you scroll through an alphabetical list to find the app you need. It may also be a good idea to configure the action button if another function would be more convenient. I myself am not averse to wearing multiple things on my wrists, if I have some extra money, I may consider a Garmin of some sort!
You’ve missed the native Apple Watch “Find My” app to share your location and the “Maps” app to drop a pin. These have been available for a while now. Also, if you have your iPhone with you, you can turn off the Cellular connection for a longer battery life.
Awesome clip Dave. Advertising (for both) matter naught compared to real world use. That’s what’s important to me and as I already have a smartwatch (Suunto 7) I see no reason to change that part of my life for the AW Ultra. Plus I don’t do square watches 😎
Bought the 7x solar to give it a go, mainly for the insane battery life and the odd workout here and there plus sleep tracking. Coming from AWU I’m curious which I’ll like more and end up keeping.
Ended up returning the garmin and got the enduro 2 for a bigger battery. Returned AWU and haven’t looked back. Wanted something that’s not an extension of my phone on my wrist
I got the AW8 few days back, I couldn’t believe how uncomfortable it was for me to leave my Garmin finex 7s back home. It eventually got to me that I only need basic smartwatch feature on my hand, text and hanging up phone calls, all other features are fat for me. The sports feedback is a dealbreaker for me, the Athletic app video you had almost pulled me back to AW8, however garmin is still far superior in a matter of battery life and feedback.
seriously i've tried the aw through the years on and off and while this seems like a step in the right direction for the venn diagram of die hard aw lovers and serious outdoor folk - it just always felt so cheesy & unnecessary to me. i hate the interface and touch controls & honestly just the form factor - it's so ugly. im satisfied with notifications on my fenix 6pro. never once have a wished i had a touchscreen. i tried a friends ultra for a bit and it still just doesn't suit me at all.
This review was great! I enjoy them for your very hands on approach done in a conversational manner. Plus the humor! You do a good job helping people relate to how you use these devices. So far my fr955 Solar has been in a drawer as I’ve been using my Ultra and enjoying it.
@@nkeet89 I use HealthFit to sync my data with various things like Strava, Training Peaks, and intervals.icu. I use Athlytic for the analysis. I use RunGap to sync with Garmin using the fake device switch so as to get badges, ha ha. I have full HRV turned on via the afib history enabling. I primarily use intervals.icu for performance analysis.
Never used it, but you can use every Apple Watch without the touchscreen, you just need to have Assistive Touch turned on. Then you have 4 hand gestures to navigate. Maybe you give that i try, might solve at least one problem.
True! I suppose my point is that when you're 50 miles into an adventure race the last thing you want to be bothered with is fiddling with your watch to get to the feature you need. In most cases the Touch Screen works great.
To me (and I’m a huge apple nerd) I always still go with garmin, currently have the fenix 7x sapphire solar. As an endurance athlete, I don’t want to charge my watch once every two days. Working out 3-5 times per week I still get close to 30 days on a single charge
Honestly i think I'll be wearing 2 watches many times still. Basically using the Apple watch for connectivity just in case of an emergency as I'll never run with my phone. Using the Garmin for the actual activity.
Now that the Garmin 6xPro is ~$400, it's tempting for me to go to that. I'm coming from s Suunto Ambit3 Peak which is super old! I'm just not convinced that the Fenix 7 is worth the extra $$$$. Thoughts?
I own both the Fenix 7 and the AWU. It seems that they might serve different audiences. For basic data and road running the AWU has its advantages. And it’s tied into the Apple ecosystem and all the stuff it can provide. I do like that the AWU now has running power as a metric. He didn’t touch on the emergency siren on the AWU-something that women might (unfortunately will all the creepy people out there) might find useful. Garmin is light years ahead with navigation I agree. But then again isn’t that their strength? And I also believe that the GPS on the AWU is more accurate based on my unscientific testing. In terms of the future Apple has a lot more than it can build on. At some point I suspect it will catch Garmin. It wasn’t that long ago that people mocked things like the Apple Watch. Now it’s THE best-selling watch in the world.
The siren is super cool and I do cover it in my "in depth review" this was more of a "high level use case" comparison. I tend to agree that these are different tools for different jobs. The AWU is awesome already though!
Can we get a list of features we wish the AWU would add? I feel Apple got some things wrong, but can also easily fix them and make the current hardware great. Re-tool the UI for the Ultra to be able to control it with only buttons and the digital crown. I was a bit shocked to see this omitted. Better post-workout and recovery analysis to bring it in line with what Garmin offers. Ability to turn individual functions on and off to conserve battery (a customizable low power mode) Obviously offline mapping, turn by turn, and all of that good stuff. Merge the "Fitness" and "Health" apps into one app "Health" to streamline things, bring it inline with Garmin Connect. I would ditch my Fenix 7x tomorrow if they added these things. What would you like to see Apple add?
Loving these videos Dave, thanks again. I appreciate the ecosystem walk through on the AWU as I don’t have one and I’m judging the pros and cons on a micro level at this point. Garmin just seems to have a better, easier sport integration with this particular activity and mapping for this use case. AWU is still capable, but not as integrated (and no offline mapping, which will probably come in a new generation). For me, a casual triathlete, the bike computer integration use case and the price eliminate the AWU for the moment. I’m sure the iterative developments for the AWU will make it more appealing though, in the future.
@@fin3389 I’ve heard that too but I’m not a Apple Watch user so I’m not as familiar with them. Is it as easy and functional as Garmin, with all offline maps and the ability to track back or route the shortest return trip like some Garmin devices can do without a cellular signal?
Instead of going back in the big apps on the Watch Ultra, you’d set one extension on the WayFinder screen that you can touch on the watch. Much faster…
Sure, but you still need to touch the screen is my point. That's not always realistic if you're in a heavy downpour. Buttons are much more reliable for extreme situations.
One Thing to notice, low power mode on the ultra also lower the GPS frequency and BPM readings... so i guess that's why u had to wait a bit more to get the GPS at the start, cos usually it's faster in casual mode. I think you need to learn to use the Apple watch more cos switching between apps is not done via the crown, but the button under it , this button will show you all opened apps and u can scroll with the crown and go back to the compass .. and you have control center too by swiping from the bottom where you can lock the touch screen too using water mode . I think it's quite hard to compare both cos the Garmin and similar sports watch were made for sports so low consumption screen that are not sexy but can last long , not very powerful processors but sufficient for what it does, the Apple watch is like the opposite , all in it is the top of what can be done in hardware so you'll will not get the same battery life with an OLED LTPO screen with millions of colors ... for example you can play youtube videos on apple watch thx to Watch tube with sounds something you cannot do on a Garmin , both are great but it's for different users i guess...
I have not noticed decreased accuracy. In fact when I asked Apple about Low Power mode they told me Heart Rate and GPS remain accurate while other settings are adjusted (no cellular, AOD off, reduced bluetooth connecteivity, Wifi etc...) I've also done several tests in Low Power mode comparing the data overlayed in a graph and have not seen a noticeable difference. I think the "Optimized Power Mode" coming later this fall with up to 60 Hours of battery life will reduce the accuracy though.
@@ChaseTheSummit oh yeah i think you are right on this , cos i remember that they talked about this extreme low power mode and that the heart sensor and GPS will be used a bit less frequent ... one thing is weird is that i get the GPS when i start a workout i created quicker than yours on the video so i thought that maybe the cause .. i'm impatient to see what this optimized Power Mode will do , cos it's the major tradeoff with a watch like this , and i think i will always consume way more power than the classical sports watches.
Right now it's the 955 but that's mainly because I've got a lot of historical data in it and I don't want to lose my HRV Status / Training Readiness lol. Listen to my last podcast and you'll get a longer version of this explanation! thanks for watching.
Cool video, but you forgot to mention something, when it comes to safety features, apple watch ultra has indeed a cellular connection, but in specific trails or some places you won't get a cellular connection. That's where devices like inreach messenger or inreach mini come in handy paired with a watch like the fenix 7, you can actually send messages to your loved ones, share location, etc, even when you don't have a cellular connection, which to me, makes garmin ecosystem better than the apple watch ultra. Apple watch look is great tho and for some sports it is great, don't appreciate 2 or 3 day battery life as I come from an Instinct solar, to me having to charge a watch every 2 days seems insane
For sure, InReach devices are great. The same could be said for the iPhone 14 which has satellite SOS and location sharing… on a different level but certainly a perk to having one!
Awesome comparison. I ditched my Fenix in favour of the Apple Watch Ultra and have not regretted one bit. I know some need the crazy long battery life but for the vast majority, the Ultra is more watch than anyone could need. Aside from the incredible build quality, I love having a cell phone on my wrist coupled with the ability to pay for things. The fact that its a full blown dive computer as well, is icing a one the cake.
@superfast30 you said “I love having a cell phone on my wrist.” I think he’s saying, “I never understood while people need a second PHONE on their wrist.”
@@superfast30 i’m stating the apple watch is like a second phone on your wrist. meaning it makes no sense to have another one when battery life is 2 days max. maybe in 5-10 years time apple will catch up. but until then, it’s not worth it for the “endurance” athletes they are going after. this watch would be useless for my ironman events that take me about 10 hours to complete. u can get extended battery if u turn off all the settings like hr, bluetooth, wifi, etc. i could do a 90 hour endurance race with my fenix and still have battery left with all the settings on
@@TheKauaiboyz51 I clearly stated for my use and for the majority of most people. I also acknowledged that some do require very long batter life. The cellular ability of the Apple Watch allows you to leave your phone behind so you are technically aren't always carrying "2 watches" as you mentioned. There also times when you dont want to pull your phone out to check a message or quickly answer a call.
Great video review of both watches! You provided some facts and left it up to the end-user to decide what is best for their use case as to which one is “best”.
I have to respectfully disagree. Once you get the music controls memorized I feel like they arent so bad. I do like on the Ultra however that you can just tell siri to play something and it happens magically.
To cover hiking use case one need to see how they both navigate you on the per-created route, show you distance till next point, how easy to understand whee you should go on a fork (sometimes "turn rigth" is not enough), adjust route on the fly, show you elevation profile of the route and your place on it, etc.
@@ChaseTheSummit well, from a "hike comparison" one expect information how well devices serve the usecase needs. Like you usually do talking about running :)
Nice video! It is pretty good for a „real“ smartwatch only 7% lost. Also 7X is using SatIQ and uses less power when using only GPS where Apple uses Multi Sat everytime
It would be nice if there was a way to toggle what GPS system to use on Apple Watch. We could probably get much longer run time with a "GPS Only" option.
I was aiming to get the Amazfit Falcon after your review, the only reason I went for The AWU after more consideration was the fact I use apple pay for public transport on a daily basis. I might get the other watch for more adventurous voyages in the future. For now, the AWU will fulfill all needs
Nice video again! Already asked you but just in case: i'm on the search of a watch that can fulfill 2 different tasks 1) GPS and altitude for advanced-yet-not-pro hiking (6-10h) with offline maps 2) Navigation in the city while cycling and while riding a motorbike (google maps i guess) The watches of this video are really expensive and only the Apple Watch can do both, if I’m not mistaken. Could the Ticwatch 3 Pro GPS Ultra be my best chance or should i get the Suunto 7? Or is there any other way to get both things done with any other smartwatch, like maybe a previous gen cheaper applewatch? I'm using an iphone. Thanks in advance!!
Your Statement about Live Tracking on the Apple Watch is wrong. Any Family Member can track your position over the Find My Network of Apple. As long as u have a Cellular connection.
Right, I know about Find My but it's not really a "live track" it's more of a location sharing displaying a pin for your location similar to a pair of AirPods left behind. Garmin's Live Track displays the course you're on (if navigating), along with a breadcrumb trail of where you've been, your heart rate data, how far you've traveled, current pace, etc... Some models also allow for two way text messaging through the Live Track called "spectator messaging". Find My is great for simply sharing a pinned location though.
@@ChaseTheSummit Since ios 16 u can follow the movement of a person live, but u dont see the track he is on or the Track he is coming from , thats right.
For the "live track" I just enable the Find My feature in my phone and add my wife, she always knows my location when I'm running as long I have phone reception. (and as long as the other person also has an Iphone of course). Great video as always, I'm really liking the Ultra but I'm not making the move as long my current watch is still Ok for my usage.
For sure, Find My is nice but I don't consider it "live tracking" as it's a bit delayed. It's more of a "location sharing" system. Garmin's implementation moves in real time and displays a breadcrumb trail on a map that shows where you have been that's very easy to view along with additional data like your heart rate, pace, etc... so spectators can get a better idea of what's going on. I'm sure there's an app for that though!
@@ChaseTheSummit find my does live tracking pretty well, doesn't show you were you've been but in the last versions the live tracking works great if the other person uses find my and clicks on your user
Great stuff AWU all the way for me because I’m deep in Apple ecosystem and it’s just so intuitive, can’t wait to swap my S5 stainless steel to AWU next month
EXCELENT COMPARISON! Deep into THE REAL use! CONGRATS! And Id like to comment that, there is no the best or the worst one, both are AWESOME DEVICES! What is the most important to choose one of them, or any other available in the market, is IDENTIFY EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED AND THE PURPOSE! If you need a powerful computer for navigation, GARMIN FENIX 7X is the best! But, if you are an urban tech boy enthusiast, that goes to hike twice a year... APPLE WATCH! 🤣😂😇😛
I use a shortcut to turn off bluetooth, wifi and Raise to wake, then start WorkOutDoors. I use negligible battery when running and cycling with the AWU. Another shortcut turns everything back on.
@@jcoterhals Yeah, if I do need to see the screen for any reason you just tap the screen lightly, but I use voice alerts through my headphones, so I rarely need to look at the screen
Can you define "negligible"? What percentage per hour are you seeing? Curious to compare to my own data. The best I can achieve is around 6%-7% per hour.
@@ChaseTheSummit I don't really keep records so have no quantitive data, but on my old AW7, I once did an approx 10 hours cycle and had something like 50% battery after. With all the radios off and the screen off, the AW is much more efficient. I tend to always use it this way. AW bright screen is a battery killer. There are other things you could disable like Siri so the AW isn't always listening, but not explored that.
May I asked why the display on the Fenix 7 is NOW AN ISSUE when years past never was? FENIX have set the standard for people who really care about their well physical being and I don't think that Apple watch will soon replace that for me An apple watch is more like a hybrid watch it tries to do a little bit of everything but sometimes comes out short on things that matter such as battery life.
Accuracy of both? For MOUNTAIN BIKING-best watch for accurate physio(heart rate, training level, readiness, sleep, O2, etc.) GPS accuracy, etc.? I am NOT a runner. Thank you!
Hah yeah I know. I actually use that shortcut at the beginning of the video. I was trying to show an example of "navigating using touch" it could have been any app.
For Apple Watch, I’ve heard a lot of people using WorkOutdoors for maps, I just hate how the whole app looks terrible. I recently switched from Series 7 to Forerunner 955 solar, and couldn’t be happier. 😊
WorkOutDoors is awesome... I do mention it near the end of this video. However, the mapping/navigation experience still isn't on par with what Garmin Offers in terms of Back to Start, Route Building, POI support, etc...
I still can’t decide AW ultra vs fenix 7x sapphire. I have both of them, but prefer to wear one all the time. For running and bike both are OK. Garmin connect is much better app, on Apple you need to mix different apps. Screen - here big win to Ultra, but battery is another thing - then fenix. Hard choice 😅
i think the best thing you fprget to mention on the apple ultra is thr ability to track air tags which mean you know if your car gets stolen at the trailhead... to me I would get a AWU if it had solar.. but i think getting both the AWU and a Tactix 7x is the best thing to do...
Great video. Each watch has it's own unique features and I agree; it will be a personal preference thing. I'm a big Garmin fan so I'm more forgiving of it's shortcomings. Apple is impressive but since I've never had all those features (starting from the ground up technology-wise), I'm not used to (or dependent) on them. Either way, I'm not able to justify (or afford) $800.00 or $1K at the moment. Sticking with the OG Instinct solar for now. Your videos are a great help in helping me decide down the road, however long that "road" is. Thank you.
For sure, Find My is great but it's more of a "location sharing" feature and not so much tracking. Garmin displays a breadcrumb trail of where you've come from, your current pace, heart rate, elevation data and spectator messaging. It's more of a "sport tracking" service rather than just sharing where you currently are.
Find My is great but it doesn't display a "live track" rather than just sharing a location. Garmin displays a breadcrumb trail of where you've been, where you're going (course), live Heart Rate, Pace, etc... it's a bit different. I'm sure there's an app out there that does all of that though!
Would be nice to see specific running sport program comparison with apple watch ie repeats, intervals, etc. how you make them: Garmin is quite competitive with this.
it would have been nice to show the distance and steps taken in both or show which is more accurate! I heard ultra had better sensors to track steps whereas Garmin does not track well if worn loosely!
@@ChaseTheSummit how do you keep all your run data straight then? I like all the data I get from my Garmin Fenix, but it doesn’t close my rings. Sometimes combining all my fitness data is a task in and of itself.
Unlikely unless I get a lot faster. Currently my 100 mile personal record is 25 hours. The Ultra maxes out at around 17 hours unless I charged mid-way which is something I don't want to deal with anymore.
Hi Chase. I understand that now many sports bloggers have focused all their attention on the Apple Watch Ultra and Pixel Watch. What about Amazfit GTR 4?
Since i have a fenix 7x solar, i have all in my wrist.... all without LTE capability. This huge battery would be compromised with LTE?... On other hand this new apple watch is awsome.... but i never will waste so much money for 3 days battery power..... thanks for your amazing review!
These comparisons puzzle me. One is a Smart Watch with capabilities of a Sportswatch. The other is a Sportswatch. Of course the Sportswatch will have superior batter. If anything it shows how good theApple Watch is
To summarize: out of the box the AWU has basic sports and outdoor functionality shown in a spectacular way, the F7X has spectacular sports and outdoor functionality shown in a basic way.

Absolutely. Which means that perhaps the more interesting comparison would be with the Epix gen 2, with its much brighter screen than the Fenix 7. Of course, that still doesn't solve Garmin's poorer interface

@@andrewdhome that depends on your definition of "poorer". I'm more than happy with Garmin's interface.

FWIW:
- Long-press the action button to get faster access to Siren, Backtrack, and a few other things
- Control the Apple Watch with voice rather than screen or Assistive Touch (start/pause/end a specific workout, launch apps, etc)
- Use Assistive Touch to control the AW with finger/hand gestures instead of using the screen ( no idea how well that works whilst running, also never actually had issues with using the screen when wet/raining, even in the shower you just blow on it to disperse the water )
- Change the app launcher layout to list, easier to find apps as they become alphabetically sorted, and gives you larger tap areas. The honeycomb layout is a misguided default.
- Disable Raise to Siri during videos, as it kept activating during yours (triggered by arm raise + loud voice)
I've been using my 7xss for 6 months now nothing can touch it. I use that flashlight everyday. Such a great watch

You deserve it, straight up
Thanks!
Agreed. The ultra looks good but prefer my fenix
Garmin Epix Gen 2 (based on Fenix 7) vs Apple watch Ultra might have been a better comparison given they both have a nice bright AMOLED display. Enjoyed the video though 🙂
He already made that video.
Check out his channel, and I think he has that video out already. 👍
Check the channel 👍
GARMIN ALL DAY EVERYDAY ......i have used my garmin fenix 7x saphire solar greay dlc with titanium band .....woooohhh....mouth full ......went for 7 day trip .....and it worked like a charm .....
17:30 -the mapping experience is superior on Garmin? Wow such a suprise from a company which primarly made navigational devices . :)))
“There is no trail run activity on the Apple Watch ULTRA”…this sounds hilarious 😆 Truly designed for ultra athletes
It’s kinda silly!
😂
I wish it was, but there is WorkOutDoors which can be used for all types of activities
Here was my concerns:
- During longer hikes the watch would just automatically stop (maybe to conserve battery?)
- Heart rate readings was way off.
- Constantly calibrate GPS signals.
- Poor UI.
- Lack of microphone.
- Inaccurate sleep recordings.
- Lack of connection to weather info in my area.
- Refresh rate
- Chunky, and uncomfortable. I was constantly aware that it was on my wrist
- inadequate oxygen sat. measurements
- Faulty compass
I can understand why some people would want the more rugged, and less fancy sports watch, however this was not for me.
@eirikgiske7475 yeah, you had a faulty device. I don't have any of these issues on my Epix or Tactix.
@@rad6666 I have a few problems mentioned for Epix 2 on my Fenix 6 Pro Sapphire as well.
1) It's almost impossible to have an oxygen saturation reading and when after much effort it's done, it's always way off.
2) inacurate sleep tracking and not being able to record day naps
3) HRM is way off (not always but sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes for the entire workout leading to ridiculously low measurments if calories consumption
4) API weather has stopped to work all together, Garmin weather also once a while does not get updated
I still love this watch for many reasons (offline maps, buttons, build quality...) but Garmin really needs to address these issues.
I dumped my epix 2 for the 7x as well and don’t regret it at all
@@julianahluwalia I can get good discount on the fenix but the Enduro is too new - talking a £225 difference in price)
May I ask the resons why your getting out of the epix 2? I've been on the fence between the 7x and epix
This. Also, you can double-press the crown to quickly switch back to the previously used app. Sort of like alt-tab for your watch.
This. The dock is how I switch.
For sure, but you'll still need to touch the screen at some point. That was the point I was trying to make. Thanks for watching!
Yep, check out my last video "2 Apps that make Apple Watch... Ultra"

I have the Apple Watch Series 7 (45mm), but I ordered the Garmin Epix 2 (Sapphire + Titanium) and I cant wait to get it! :D
I'd bring a phone anyway... So the cellular function on the AWU isn't that much of a draw for me.
Which watch do you like more and why?
Do you use any apps like Athletic or anything? I have been really wanting a Ultra but I just am not 100 percent.
I've been doing the same. It's nice to have the cellular connection on my wrist instead of in a pocket.
Thank you for comparison
I want to buy fenix 7 but my budget is limited. sapphire display is necessary?
I mean standard display is too weak?
Not only is sapphire resistant to scratches, it’s a lens that’s more clear in my opinion.
Ability to turn individual functions on and off to conserve battery (a customizable low power mode)
Obviously offline mapping, turn by turn, and all of that good stuff.
Merge the "Fitness" and "Health" apps into one app "Health" to streamline things, bring it inline with Garmin Connect.
I would ditch my Fenix 7x tomorrow if they added these things. What would you like to see Apple add?
I have both. I grab the AWU and wear it. I do not do multi-day adventures, so the AWU gives me everything I need and more!
This video is very informative and straightforward. I’m in the middle of making decision which brand should I buy. Thx
Should be noted that there are a ton of 3rd party apps on the app store that do offline maps and things like that, definitely not as integrated though
Returned AWU and kept Fenix, no regrets
Apple Watch Ultra: ultimate smartwatch with sport watch features.
Garmin Watch: ultimate sport watch with smartwatch features.
The Apple Watch display is nice but the battery only last a quarter of the time of the garmin
It’s funny, I’m sure for 70% of this video, I could see Siri thinking you were talking to it so it kept turning on 😂
lol, yeah not sure why Siri wants to talk so much but it's ALWAYS activating when I don't need it.
Love the comparison. Not going to lie, if there was a Garmin that had a phone included, it would be no contest for me.
thanks, another video packed full of information and more confirmation to stick with the Epix Gen 2 👍
Chase, Another great video! Question, which watch would you use as your everyday watch if you could only have one, Fenix 7X or the Apple Ultra?
Right now it's the 955 but that's mainly because I've got a lot of historical data in it and I don't want to lose my HRV Status / Training Readiness lol. Listen to my last podcast and you'll get a longer version of this explanation! thanks for watching.
@@ChaseTheSummit Thank you for the reply and I always check your videos out.
I think it does have sos satellite comms now.
Have you tried the work outdoors app for the AW. from what I have seen on YT it has the extra features that the garmin has, maps etc?
Yep, check out my recent video about apps.
I never understood why people need a second watch on their wrist. Literally have to pull your phone out of your pocket.
@@TheKauaiboyz51 "second watch" would entail wearing two watches. A phone is not a "watch"
@superfast30 you said “I love having a cell phone on my wrist.”
I think he’s saying, “I never understood while people need a second PHONE on their wrist.”
Great explanation of the "low power" mode and what it affects (and does not).
Great video review of both watches! You provided some facts and left it up to the end-user to decide what is best for their use case as to which one is “best”.
That garmin's music controls are just wtf ;)))
The whole Garmin interface prioritizes function over aesthetics. In that sense it’s quite useful.
That would make sense but the Apple Watch Ultra doesn't navigate routes out of the box. You'll need a third party app for that.
@@ChaseTheSummit well, from a "hike comparison" one expect information how well devices serve the usecase needs. Like you usually do talking about running :)
Love this comparison in the wild! Exactly what I wanted to see
@@ChaseTheSummit Perhaps with the comming battery saving mode
Not stand alone, but i use Komoot for navigation with my Ultra
GARMIN = watch for man, Apple = candy, sweety preciouse for woman ;)
I was aiming to get the Amazfit Falcon after your review, the only reason I went for The AWU after more consideration was the fact I use apple pay for public transport on a daily basis. I might get the other watch for more adventurous voyages in the future. For now, the AWU will fulfill all needs
Nice video again! Already asked you but just in case: i'm on the search of a watch that can fulfill 2 different tasks
1) GPS and altitude for advanced-yet-not-pro hiking (6-10h) with offline maps
2) Navigation in the city while cycling and while riding a motorbike (google maps i guess)
The watches of this video are really expensive and only the Apple Watch can do both, if I’m not mistaken.
Love these ‘on trail’ videos. 🙌
Thanks Matt!
Great stuff
AWU all the way for me because I’m deep in Apple ecosystem and it’s just so intuitive, can’t wait to swap my S5 stainless steel to AWU next month
So after a 20 minute video he says, "what is the conclusion here, well I don't really have one".........Lol.
I suppose the point I was trying to make is they both have strengths and weaknesses. Neither is perfect or a “one to rule them all”.
Which watch should I buy? Fenix 7 or AWU.Please Suggest.
Can you still use the screen even if raise to wake is turned off?
@@jcoterhals yep: just tap screen to wake (or side buttons)
May I asked why the display on the Fenix 7 is NOW AN ISSUE when years past never was? FENIX have set the standard for people who really care about their well physical being and I don't think that Apple watch will soon replace that for me An apple watch is more like a hybrid watch it tries to do a little bit of everything but sometimes comes out short on things that matter such as battery life.
Not an issue. Just different.
Accuracy of both?
For MOUNTAIN BIKING-best watch for accurate physio(heart rate, training level, readiness, sleep, O2, etc.) GPS accuracy, etc.? I am NOT a runner. Thank you!
One of the complications on the Home Screen (bottom circle in the middle of the display) opens the compass app when tapped
Hah yeah I know. I actually use that shortcut at the beginning of the video. I was trying to show an example of "navigating using touch" it could have been any app.
@@ChaseTheSummit keep up the great work, love your videos!
Great video. Thanks for posting.
Thank you
I’m in the Apple platform but I absolutely hate the battery life on it and hate that it really only last less than 2 days
This seems to confirm my initial impressions... AWU is getting there, but I'll stick with my Fenix6x at least until Apple changes a few things.
The outdoor app is a must have for the ultra its give you the map and data screens
WorkOutDoors is great. I just wish the app had navigation features like "back to start" routing and course creation.
Thank you.
An additional point is that Apple Watch has FindMy support. You get live track through that on a map. AND it works both ways.
There is live tracking built into the Apple Watch. It's called Find People. Built into the Apple Watch. Start the app and allow location sharing.
Find My is great but it doesn't display a "live track" rather than just sharing a location. Garmin displays a breadcrumb trail of where you've been, where you're going (course), live Heart Rate, Pace, etc... it's a bit different. I'm sure there's an app out there that does all of that though!
You can double tap side button to return to previous app…so just run compass app before start running and you have compass app too with this tip.
For sure, but you'll still need to touch the screen to select something in the app. That's kind of the point I was trying to make. Thanks for sharing!
No watch tracks well when worn loosely.
Check out my in-depth review for GPS data comparisons.
The one question I have is when you put on your shoes and run out the door for a trail run, which watch do you take with you?
Usually more than one 😂
@@ChaseTheSummit 😂
@@ChaseTheSummit how do you keep all your run data straight then? I like all the data I get from my Garmin Fenix, but it doesn’t close my rings. Sometimes combining all my fitness data is a task in and of itself.
On the Apple Watch u can simply use Maps instead of the Compass app?
Great video, I just have a question: would you take your apple watch ultra to run an ultramaraton of 100 miles?
Unlikely unless I get a lot faster. Currently my 100 mile personal record is 25 hours. The Ultra maxes out at around 17 hours unless I charged mid-way which is something I don't want to deal with anymore.
Hi Chase. I understand that now many sports bloggers have focused all their attention on the Apple Watch Ultra and Pixel Watch. What about Amazfit GTR 4?
I’ve been testing one for a few weeks. Review coming soon!
@@ChaseTheSummit I'm looking forward to the review. I think this is a good model.
Hiking, camping, canoeing, has to be the Garmin.
Helpful video. Thanks.
Hello Sir, are you planning to compare Apple Watch ULTRA with Garmin Forerunner 955/Solar in near future? Thank you
Great video, just curious. Why not use hiking mode on the Apple Watch?
Why not? Sure. It makes no difference.
FYI. The thumbnail shows the 7x screen to be quite dim. You can actually turn up the brightness quite a bit.
The brightness in the thumbnail is at 100%. Even at max brightness it doesn't hold a candle to the OLED display on Apple Watch Ultra.
Have you tested out the route feature to much extent? Interested in knowing if it’s efficient or if the routes are actually practical. Thanks!
On the Garmin? Yes they use something called trendline navigation that uses the most popular routes for generating a course. It's pretty impressive!
you can hit the bottom button on the right to get to recent app's used so you dont have to go into apps to find compass.
For sure! But you'll still need to touch the screen to interact with the apps. That's the point I was trying to make.
